Microphone Volume Maxing Out

When I'm using Rosetta Stone with the built-in microphone on my iMac, I generally turn the input volume down to around 67% to minimize distortion. However, for some reason the volume always goes back to 100% after a few minutes. It's really annoying to have to keep on bringing the volume down. What's the issue and how can I fix it?

After having the same problem as you guys for a while, I thought all hope was lost. I gave up for a while as manually readjusting the microphone volume every 5 minutes was such a hassle. While watching Merlin Mann's Desktop Tour Video (Linked for awesomeness: http://www.vimeo.com/2831715), I installed one of his mentioned applications: SoundSource (http://www.rogueamoeba.com/freebies/).
At first, I thought this could be a nifty little tool for adjusting the input volume fast when Rosetta Stone went crazy. However, after using it for a couple hours, I noticed that the input volume hasn't changed at all. I'm not 100% sure if it's SoundSource's doing, but all I know is I no longer have the microphone problem now that I'm using SoundSource to monitor my input volume levels.
Give it a shot if you're having this problem. It just might work for you too.

  • Spontaneous volume max out

    Hi
recently, while recording with garageband 4.1.2, the volume will spontaneously max out, causing pure static for about 5 minutes, but then go back to normal. if the recording is left running, the static will come back again and the same process will repeat. if I stop the recording tho, sometimes the volume max out will disappear and the recording will be fine (as if the max out never occurred), but other times the max out will remain.
any thoughts? I use a shure sm57 mic into a Edirol FA-66 firewire recording box. It's worked fine for the past 4 months, just in the last week has it started acting up.
any help would be greatly appreciated, cheers!

You could try reloading the firmware but it might be a hardware problem - button stuck down, maybe? If so, try exercising it. PB

  • Volume Maxes out with headset

I can't record voice memos using the headset mic without the volume maxing out. I'm using the stock mic. Any ideas how to fix this?

You can try to remove and recreate the ALSA state file.
Maybe the permissions of /var/lib/alsa/asound.state are wrong.
See this Arch wiki article for reference.
You should also check the journal of the alsa-store systemd service for errors:
    journalctl -u alsa-store.service

  • Volume maxed out but still not loud

my shuffle (current gen) has worked fine for about 6 months now but recently the volume has lowered...its really weird. i tried changing the setting in the settings tab on my comp to the max and its still not as loud as it was before. any advice would be nice.

You might note that checking the box to set a volume limit actually DOES limit the volume even when set to maximum...
Try your earphones on some other device audio out to see whether your earphones are the problem. About a month ago, I began having trouble with volume in higher than normal ambient noise situations... turned out my Apple earphones somehow had become less sensetive to the shuffle's output level. I went back to a previous set of earphones and was back at the normal volume range.

  • Volume maxed out

I recently bought a universal cradle for use with my Nano and now I have been occasionally experiencing a wierd issue with it. When I leave my Nano in the cradle for an extended period (i.e. over the weekend or longer) when I first use it again, the volume is set all the way to the max. This never happened with my Nano prior to getting the cradle and does not happen to my 3rd Gen Ipod when I put it in its cradle.
Any suggestions on how to deal with the volume issue?

  • The volume of Youtube is extremely low, even maxed out.

I would say that for the past two-three weeks I've been having a problem where my Youtube volume in Firefox is extremely low. In order to hear anything really I have to have my Windows volume at 100%, my speaker volume maxed out, and Youtube volume at its highest.
I Watched the exact same youtube video in chrome and its so LOUD! I had to turn my windows volume to 50% and my speakers way down and it was still louder than Firefox. I searched for similar issues and found one that exactly matched my problem, I even followed the suggested steps to fixing the issue at hand but nothing has worked.
    Steps completed so far:
    -Fresh install
-Cleared cookies, cache, site preferences and offline data
    -re installing flash
    -Cleared flash cookies and settings
I dont want to abandon firefox but this issue is extremely annoying and there doesnt seem to be a logical fix available. Any help is appreciated.

    Philip,
I want to thank you for your suggestion. There was an issue where the volume for the Firefox application was turned down extremely low resulting in the issue at hand. I have since corrected this thanks to you!
    James,
I appreciate you trying to help but I explained in my question that I had the YouTube volume up to 100%.

  • Microphone too quiet in Windows 8.1 all volume settings maxed out.

Hello, about a two months ago I upgraded from Windows 7 to Windows 8.1 and after that, my microphone in Skype doesn't hear me unless it is maxed out and I am shouting. It works without problems in Windows/other applications (Windows Sound Recorder, Teamspeak 3, Portal 2 ingame voip, ...) So my specifications are following:Windows 8.1 Pro 64bitSkype 6.16Headset Sennheiser PC 360 http://www.alfacomp.cz/php/product.php?eid=105HK5000000000ZFKMotherboard Asus P8Z77-M Screenshots of my settings are attached  And here is what i tried to doo:1) Updated Skype and alter reinstalled Skype.2) complete uninstall and install of Skype according to this https://support.skype.com/en/faq/FA10634/how-can-i-completely-uninstall-and-then-reinstall-skype-for-windows-desktop3) tried different driver versions (latest version for W7, W8 and W8.1) from here http://www.asus.com/Motherboards/P8Z77M/HelpDesk_Download/, latest available from http://www.realtek.com.tw/downloads/ (version 6.0.1.7246) and even these which Windows Update installed.4) Tried Skype App for Windows 8 (enabled permissions for microphone and webcam)5) Tried different microphone.6) Chatted with Skype support and went through their checklist of settings to make sure I didn't forget anything Any help would be appreciated.

i am having the same problem here is what i tried i have tried trouble shooting this problem many ways but it never quite works. i will list what i have done so far. 1) tested with another mic. same effect 2) maxed the mic volume in the skype settings 3) tested with another audio recording software. mic still works great 4) tried resetting everything i could think that would help (computer, skype, skype settings) 5) when i tried resetting skype settings by going into appdata and changing the skype file into Old_Skype forcing skype to reload its settings, it would appear to work wonderfully when i started up the software. it would walk me through the setup settings and the bar that shows mic volume was going up to my voice as it normally does. then after setup and i get into a test call, my mic is back to sounding incredebly quiet. 6) i went into sound setting and tried many combinations concerning mic boost which was already up, tried disableing software setting override, tried disableing all sound effects. all still nothing. i am using a turtle beach x12 but that shouldent be the problem because a logitech i have is having the same problem. i am running on windows 8.1 i have tried skype calls with friends they all say my mic is very quiet. much much quieter than normal, even when yelling into the mic. if i think of anything else you may need or if you ask for it i will add to the post.thank you all Edit: after more testing i may have discovered the problem. skype is only detecting my onboard mic and is trying to use that (im using a laptop). how can i get skype to detect my turtle beach headset? other programs seem to just fine Edit 2: disreguard the first edit. when speaking into the mic in a way that the on bord mic wouldn't be able to pick up, skype got the sound i was sending into my headset mic. still quietly but somewhat louder because i was closer to the mic on the headset

  • Sound volume low, even though maxed out on sliders

My iMac no longer seems to be playing sound at maximum volume. I am sure it used to be plenty loud, now, I have to really listen when there is sound, especially on things like .mac tutorials. I have the volume sliders maxed out.

Unfortunately, you are not the only one. This has been reported elsewhere, and there doesn't seem to be any fix that I have seen. Your only solution may be to revert to 10.4.6.
I'm sorry to be the bearer of bad news,

  • X-fi Xtreme Music soundcard PROBLEM: Microphone volume too low(unusab

Hello, I've spent a while?sifting through these forums and?can't find any solution to this problem. Many people have been asking this same question and?aren't getting any solutions. When I say the microphone is?too low, I mean it's at the lowest possible volume it could?run at,?so it's unusable and?might as well not be functioning at all. Keep in mind every volume setting on the computer has been set to max.
Is their anyone?that?owns a X-fi xtreme music sound card?using a?microphone that does work?If so, what microphone are you using?I'm only?suggesting that theirs some odd settings with this card that only allow a certain kind of microphone to work with it. I'm using an old mic that works perfectly with my sb li've and that I've had for 3 years now. I'll echo the same basic details I've already checked over. They can be found in other customers' posts who are having this?same problem.) Microphone works - tested on other systems and other cards2) Microphone volume is on max - both in recording and playback (although playback is muted)3) Gain is enabled - Ticked +20dB box4) Drivers are current - tried shipped drivers, current stable, and beta release? Here are more links to this problem, which has not been solved yet:

I?suspect no one?has?the answer to this problem?yet. But could someone please tell me if they are using this soundcard with a mic that is working. If so please tell me what microphone you are using.

I don't know if this is the latest thread but it seems to be. Obviously this is a big prob for a lot of pee
    ps.
I have Just built a new machine and included a X-Fi Extreme audio for the 8 channel sound capabilities for movie viewing etc, but .. I also run Teamspeak servers for several games ( WoW , UT , CS etc) and find myself unable to communicate using said card. problem is mic boost is available in playback mode but not in record mode. If you activate mic boost in playback it does actually increase volume in output mode also (don't ask me why) ...but not by much . Not enough for peeps on the other end to hear you while gaming. So... if you can boost mic on playback , why not on record ? which is where it is suposed to be in the first place. there are a LOT of frustrated gamers out there that have paid good money for the surround experience but are unable to do what previous cards have done well .... and that is allow communication between players . please don't ignore this as this is not an operating system problem.... i have installed this card on Vista and XP (both X64 and 32)? and still no mic boost from the software available. you know the problem .. at least acknowledge it and give an update. thank you?Fly

  • GT70 Microphone Volume too low

I am experiencing low microphone volume even when "Level" is set to 100% and boost set max (30). I have tried lots of suggestions from the web but no luck so far. When I remove the RealTek HD Audio Manager drivers, it gets a little better but still not loud enough for the other party to hear me well. Any help would be appreciated.

This may or may not work, but it did for my CR600.
Download the Realtek Semiconductor Corp. High Definition Audio System Software Ver: R2.19.
After installing this driver perform a Driver update and let windows download the newest driver.  This now works setting microphone to 100% and boost to 20%.  Also when a microphone is plugged in it pops up a new Information screen on the task system icon screen in lower right ReakTek HD Audio Manager.

  • Audigy 2 ZS - Microphone volume too low (using front case pan

    Hi,
I've searched the forums for my particular problem and was unable to find a solution
I'm hoping someone here can guide me.
My microphone volume is extremely low whenever i plug it into the front jack of my case. Now if i were to plug it in directly at the back on the soundcard the volume is just fine.
I've checked my settings in the control panel, my mic is selected, the +20db boost is on. I've re-checked those settings both times ( while plugged in the back and in the front panel )
For the life of me, i cant figure out why the input volume just drops when i plug it in the front.
    Any one have any ideas?
*note: i've checked settings in creative surround mixer and they are proper, the mic is selected and boost is enabled. I read somewhere about a line2/mic2 ? i do not see this option anywhere (in surround mixer or control panel sound options)
    Any help is appreciated

im sorry that i cant help you, but how have you connected your case mic/headphone jacks? i thought this is barely possible on creative cards.. or do you have that creative bay-thing?
edit: ah sry i thought you have x-fi..Message Edited by zenu on 2-30-2005 2:24 AM

  • Narration too quiet with levels maxed out

Hi! I'm trying to record narration in Premiere Elements 7 and despite my levels being maxed out, it's still way too quiet. I just purchased a Blue Snowball Ice USB mic. I also tried it with a non-USB mic and got the same result. I also tried recording through Soundbooth CS4 and it sounded the same. I've tried to adjust the levels both through Windows control panel and in the narration recorder window in Premiere but nothing helps. Any ideas?

    julieoolie
Thanks for the follow up with the additional details.
From your details, this is not a Premiere Elements issue. Rather it is an issue involving
your computer sound system and equipment.
If you were stuck with a bunch of low volume narration clips from whatever source, you could consider looking at
at the the following which uses the free audio editor Audacity to increase volume (Amplitude)
Audacity tutorial:making the sound track louder, increasingthe Amplitude, or normalizing the volume levels
Audacity: Free Audio Editor and Recorder
Then you export the volume adjusted clips from Audacity (.wav or .mp4) and import them into the Premiere Elements project.
But, the focus would appear to be on the system volume settings for recording and speakers. So, I am not sure if there is any
merit in working with Audacity in a sound flawed system. You could try.
There is a maneuver in Premiere Elements that you could look at when you have the audio clip volume at max 6 dB and the volume is not loud
enough. Make copies of the audio clip and place the copies directly above one another on the audio tracks. Keep stacking them until
you get the increased volume that you want.
Please review and consider and then we decide what next.
    Thank you.

  • Microphone volume too quiet only with skype

My microphone volume is extremely quiet during calls. This is not a problem with my headset since it works perfectly fine with any other communication or recording software. I have my microphone volume and boost set to max in the recording setting and I unchecked the automatically adjust microphone option in skype's audio settings. I've also tried re-installing my sound card driver but that did not solve the problem as well. I think my microphone stopped working with skype after version 7.0. I used to just simply use a much older version of skype (version 6.5) until recently Skype decides to retire all the older versions. So now I am stuck with a skype that no longer works. An interesting thing to note is that if I uncheck "allow applications to take exclusive control of this device" in the microphone properties setting and then restart skype, my mic will be at normal volume for about a minute, then it will be extremely low again. If I restart skype again, the mic will work perfectly fine for a minute again. (I am not entirely sure why and I am not sure it works in a real call becuase I only tested this with the ecco/sound test service). Please Help!

Someone has posted this http://community.skype.com/t5/Windows-desktop-client/Help-Windows-10-Microphone-not-working/m-p/4076999#M361092 Please let us know if this fixed the microphone for you
