Microphones for video iPods finally available

I just got a Belkin TuneTalk Stereo mic for my iPod and am pretty happy with the sound quality of the built-in mic. I also have a couple of Audio-Technica self-powered lapel mics that I'd previously used with a camcorder--using a splitter, I can record an interview with one mono mic in each stereo channel. This way, if I need to, I can equalize the volumes before bouncing it down to a mono podcast. The problem is that the external mics are considerably quieter than the built-in mic. Have others had experience using external mics with video iPod adapters? I'm curious how other mics and other adapters work.

Marina, I wouldn't bother with high-quality mode for lectures. For the last podcast I did, the built-in mic with low-quality mono sounded just fine. I think the limits depend on your sound quality setting, your battery charge, and your available hard drive space. I'm sure the review meant after 90 minutes you'd have to stop recording until you either offloaded your sound file or recharged the battery (don't really know which). The iPod caches the sound to memory, then writes it to the hard drive as needed, so I'm certain they didn't mean stop and restart. I have a 60G iPod with about 20G free, so I can record a lot of interviews, but they tend to be 20 minutes or so each (in low-quality mono), so I've never come close to hitting the limit. I think the reviews at ilounge.com are pretty extensive, and should provide more info on your expected recording length. If you have a laptop and care to connect the iPod to it via USB, it'll work off of the laptop's battery, which could give you a longer recording, but again limited by your iPod's available hard drive space. Hope that helps.

  • Will there be an update for video iPods?

Looking at all the new iPods (nano & classic) there is a revamp to the interface. From what I can tell there is no difference between iPod with Video and iPod classic (Other than storage capacities and build materials). So hypothetically the new interface with coverflow should work on the iPods with video right? Does any one know if apple intends to have an update for video iPods?

Could I please make one thing clear, I am not prepared to turn this into a "slanging" match. The comments I made are valid comments and I have in no way insulted anybody in this discussion and would appreciate the same.
Firstly my comments of "I'm sure that Apple would be able to bring an update to 5th gen ipods to include the new and exciting features they have announced?" it is a simple comment, of which you have questioned in a manner to which I'm not sure; why you have done so? Are people out there saying it is in no way possible to roll back these great features to the 5th gen ipods? The human race have completed many amazing feets, but I guess cover flow on a 5th gen ipod is just a step too far?
Your crued observation of me using the word rhetorical is confusing to say the very least. A rhetorical question is one you already know the answer too, therefore it may be viewed as a question but is in fact a statement.
The third comment, i will agree with you upon. I have jumped to a conclusion, but, for what other reason would Apple not roll these exciting features onto the 5th gen ipods for, other than; they want you to buy the new ipods? Which in itself validates my point, I do not feel the need to own 2 large storage devices.
4th comment, "I would certainly never defend bad support. However, Apple has provided excellent support. Your whining is completely unrelated to support". Very constructive!
Finally the 5th comment. I will repeat my self:
"The human race have completed many amazing feets, but I guess cover flow on a 5th gen ipod is just a step too far?"
At no point have I confessed to being an ipod software creator, but I'm sure the lovely people at Apple could perform this feet........if they wanted too?

  • Microphone for 5g iPod?

Is there a microphone for 5g iPod yet? If not are there any alternate solutions for recording audio with iPod?

I also check for product announcements nearly every day. I bought the 5gen iPod specifically for hi-quality audio recording (after reading the technical specs), and was sorely diappointed to find that no mic interfaces exist yet.
What's up apple? It's the christmas shopping frenzy and you can't support your newest and best iPod with a microphone interface?
Incidentally, Gemini makes a mic-to-USB adapter that will work with the 5Gen iPod's hard disk capabilities but it costs $229, almost as much as the iPod itself. Pfft!

  • Help with converting WMV files to quicktime movies for video ipod.

Is there a way to convert my movies that play with the windows media player to a movie file that Quicktime Pro can use to export to my video ipod?
I am running windows xp, can anyone help??

File size is dicated by the bitrate of the file. From my review of (thousands) of WMV files there appears to be some compression in the WMV format that is not reapplied when save as to a MOV container is performed. You can see in get info the WMV file say 100MB has maybe 125-150MB of data when it is fully loaded in Quicktime.
Thus save as does not apply the WMV compression the same as native WMV is all I can assume and the new QT file (MOV container) is bigger than the source file is.
Exporting to any new QT format (say H264) is going to make a file that is dependent on the new QT bitrate you select but if it is higher than the bitrate shown in the Get Info Inspector box when the original WMV has been opened it will be bigger without a doubt. So if you have a 3Mb/sec WMV file that you export to 700 kb/sec for iPod basic it should be 1/4 of the size. Use 5Mb/sec fo Apple TV it should be 2/3 larger.
I rarely use QT Pro to export and when I do I don't use default settings. I prefer MPEG Streamclip which offers easier control of variables, batch file processing, deinterlacing and other things and it is free.

  • Why use H.264 over straight MPEG 4 for video ipod?

I'm beginning to rip DVD's to play on my video ipod, as well as exporting
videos I've created in Final Cut Pro to play on the Ipod.
In short, can anyone provide a sort explanation as to why you'd pick
H.264 rather than straight mpeg 4 as the output format, if the only goal
is to play on the Video Ipod?
Is there an advantage of one over the other in either quality, creation time or file size?
Any input would be appreciated. Thanks.

In short, can anyone provide a sort explanation as to why you'd pick
    H.264
Higher quality in a smaller file.

with the new video iPod(5th G) the possibilities of watching videos with a head or eye wear are very attractive. Does any body has any experience with any of the available models out there?. • Question, re: Microphone for 8GB ipod touch

I recently got an 8GB iPod touch. I want to be able to use Skype, but it's telling me I need to connect a microphone. Where can I get a microphone that is known to be compatible with this iPod?

    Hello webofdem,
    And welcome to Apple Discussions!
Is the 8 GB Touch a 1st or 2nd generation? If you don't know, check out this Apple support document for more assistance.

And instead of trying to recommend any, check out this thread from the actual Skype forums regarding different kins of Mics you can purchase for your iPod Touch whether its a 1st or 2nd generation.

  • Microphone for new iPod nano?

    Hi,
Does anyone know if there is a microphone you can buy for the new iPod Nano? I record a lot of acoustic music and need to get it into my iTunes Library. I'd rather not carry my iBook around.
    Thanks
Aluminum iPod Nano, iBookG4   Mac OS X (10.4.8)

the new nanos can do recording - the old ones cant.
im confused, is this nano your speaking about the
black glossy one?, cuase if it is the microphone
    is
not compatible with it is it?
the new nanos are the 2 generation of the old ones, only apple snatched the samsung glossy nanos since they had the patent and jumped on it at that quarter year, yes seccess story.
But as i remember, they all record yet apple never provided a microphone solution for them., and the older iPods all have accesories like mics etc etc. and all the new iPods do not, or maybe the 30 and 60 gigs do but are very expensive.
Can anyone confirm how to record on a nano and what mics to get?

  • File Type and Size for Video iPod

I have the latest ipod that does it all, but I am a little concerned about the lack of control on the file type size. I can export a mp4 file with my own settings so it isn't such a large file but it won't load or play. I can convert the file but it makes it the standard file size which is larger than I want it to be. Isn't there a way to save my own settings and still have it play video?
Thanks for any info from anyone.

I want to save a higher and better compression and not such high quality settings as the ipod standards settings are.
    You can't.

  • Captivate 8 Edit mouse points for video demo not available??

    Hello,
I've been trying to fig out how to enable mouse point editing for a video demo in Captivate 8. I know in previous versions it was simply edit >>> mouse points and even documentation I've read states its the same for captivate 8 but when I go to the edit menu I don't' have an option for edit mouse points. this is in both Mac and PC version. I did find the options adding a mouse to the recording but that doesn't help with editing the actual mouse in the video.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.
    Thanks

After a little more experimentation I see that this feature is only available in a .cpvc not a .cptx. with a video in it.

  • Battery issue for Video ipod

after watching videos on my ipod, the battery seems to drain a little too much. for example, an episode of friends which is 23 mins long, takes away half the battery life. surely this is not normal. anyone know if and how i can solve this. do i need to take it to the apple store to change the battery and how much does that cost???

  • How do I to turn on the microphone for my iPod touch?

We need to turn on the Microphone so that The Furby Boom App will work.  However, can't figure out how to do this
on an Ipod Touch, 4th generation.  Thanks.

There are no controls for the mic. The app should detect and use the built-in mic. Are you getting a message on the iPod when you try to use it in the app?
If you go to Settings>Privacy is the mic allowed?
    - Make sure the mic hole is clear and unobstructed. It is the little hole on the back by the camera lens(if has back camera). For the 16 GB one without the back camera the mic hole is on the top edge near the center.
    - Open the Voice Memos app and see if you see movement on the VU meter needle with changes in noise level trying to be recorded.

  • Converting MPG, MPEG4, QT files for video iPod

Why do the videos that I have downloaded from the internet play fine on my iMac, but when I "DRAG" them to iMovie to edit them, no sound comes with them? Also, how can I output a Quicktime movie (i'm QT7) to DV on my camera? Are there "protection" issues? I can take a video snippet from t.v., copy to my DV camera, make an iMovie, convert it to an iPod movie and play it on my iPod, but cannot do this with other files I aleady have on my computer. Any help would be appreciated.

RIGHT ON!!!! With a little help from the board, I figured it out. Simply put (forget about mux/demux complicated stuff) here it is: Download MPEG Streamclip (easy), drag your mpeg-1 muxed into the viewer (start and end points are automatically set) and tell it to convert to MPEG-4 format. Choose ipod setting (automatically sets all of the fields) and it converts the video in about 3 minutes!! As opposed to the other way that takes 20 minutes plus. This program ROCKS!!!
