MicroSD HC future compatibility?

hey people.
at the moment the current cap for storage on the N95 is 2GB, governed by the largest avaliable memory card in the MicroSd format, but there are future plans to release MicroSD HC format cards from 4gb soon, to 8gb by Q3 2007.
Now the cards themself are physically the same shape and size but from what i can see, their internal workings might be a little different, hence the "HC" classification.
Does anyone know if it would be possible to support SDHC cards with a simple firmware update? or would it require additional hardware as id love to see storage capacity on my N95 be increased, after going from an 8GB N91 to this, its a bit of a "downgrade"
Cheers for any help.

REALLY !
Where'd ya get that info from indra? I checked the phone features in nokia-asia.com, and it stated:
Memory Functions
Up to 150 MB free memory for user data and applications
Expandable up to 2GB with microSD memory card
I'm a little confused.

  • Project files- future compatibility?

Here's the scenario: I would like to offer my customers the option to purchase the project files for future alterations to a project. For example, I would back up the entire project: source footage, render files, associated Motion files, everything that is associated with the project. And then give it to them on either a small hard drive or on a couple discs (for small projects). This way, at anytime in the future, they want to re-edit or update their promotional video, it would be as simple as importing the files and picking up where you left off- very similar to backing up film rolls in iPhoto, where it exports the original photos plus all the data for changes you made.
My question is: Is it guaranteed that those project files will be compatible with Final Cut Pro 5 to 10 years later. Or is it possible that I would try to open those files with a future versioin of Final Cut, and it would not recognize them?

    Jeff,
I don't know how much profit you could generate with your marketing, but its certainly worth further investigation - depending on the client type that you cater to.
    Here's what I've been doing:
For ALL clients, I always keep the project file and original acquisition tapes as well as a DVCam master and DVD master.
For corporate clients that have projects that routinely require updating, I keep their material on an ATA drive - the cost of the drive is figured into their budget. when it's time to update a project, I slide their drive into a WebieTech DriveDoc and I'm ready to go.
For other corporate projects, I keep any graphics, music or other material I've created on a CD-ROM or DVD-ROM ... in case of a re-edit or a new project for that client. Non-corporate clients (events, tributes, docus, etc) are handled the same way.
All this costs me is a few cents for some blank CDs or DVDs. As I said, the hard drives are paid for at the time the project begins for those clients that will definitely need regular edit updates.
I use my method as a selling technique in initial consultations, by letting the prospective client know I keep the original tapes and masters on hand.
But even with all that, there's no guarantee that any media, player or software will be useable in the future; nothing is future proof! Anyone still have a working BetaMax deck or 5-1/4" floppy drive? Or how about a working wire recorder ... when was the last time you saw one of those outside of a museum?

  • WRT-300N - Worries about future compatibility and current network support

Is there a way that this new router can 'trick' networking software ( Network Magic et. al. ) into running with this router.
Seems that the Network Tools vendors are all gloom and doom about them
because the standard is likely to change in 2008.
This means to us that upgraded to the 300N that we can use anyones networking tools because they refuse to support them.
Is this 2008 gloom and doom scenario true ?
Did I make a big mistake and will need a new router in 2008 when released standard cards try to work with this router.
I really really miss my home network !!

The highest I acheive is 270 and sometimes it does drop. I had a lot of tweaking to do especially with the antennas.

  • Future compatibility of Mac HFS with new external HD

    Hi,
I have a PPC imac G5 with OSX10.4.8 and new external HD-My Book 320 in Fat32-which I'd like to use as a bootable back up.
1.Do I have to reformat to Mac HFS to make it a bootable HD?
2.Will the Mac disk utilities work if it remains as FAT32 formatting?
3.Most importantly-if formatted to Mac HFS will this cause an issue years later when Mac has forgotten about PPC owners, and I try to transfer all this data to a new intel mac? Or is there no conflict possible?
4.To zero out or erase a 320GB prior to an HFS formatting means the computer will be unusable for how long as it erases? (roughly)
Thanks in advance for any answers!!
    Scott
    G5   Mac OS X (10.4.6)

    Scott,
Is it firewire? If not, it won't want to boot your iMac G5.
    1. Yes.
    2. Please flesh out the question. Will disk utilities work to do what?
    3. a. Macs will contintue to read HFS+.
    b. The boot issue with Intel Macs has to do with the different
processors and the differences between booting EFI vs. Open
Firmware. The volume structure is different. The files
    will be readable.
    c. You will not, however, want to try to use PPC programs in an
Intel Mac. Classic and associated programs are also specifically
    not supported.
    4. You can continue to use the computer normally while it's zeroing
    the external drive.

  • Should we upgrade to Snow leopard?

Basically, I'd suggest: don't upgrade --- but I would love to hear from those who have found any real or substantial benefits from doing so (the extreme number of messages re problems and disadvantages are already overwhelming and cover that side thoroughly)
    My experience:
I should have remembered: if it ain't broke, don't fix it (and all I was even hoping for or expecting was for my (fairly new) Mac to operate about the same with maybe a minor 64 bit speed increase).
I have encountered numerous problems and disadvantages related to SL (Snow Leopard) (though my actual several-hour upgrade/installation worked flawlessly), and what is worse, even after getting some of the problems sorted out (and some not yet) and using SL for about a week, I very much regret 'upgrading' to SL (and will be working on restoring (non-snow) Leopard tonight/tomorrow).
I have looked at every upgraded and new aspect of SL, trying to find a reason to keep it, and there is nothing of any significance to me (and, I expect, to most people) that was not already in (non-snow) Leopard in one way or another - and some advertised things like new Safari features were already available with (non-snow) Leopard as automatic/free updates (and Safari 4 works perfectly for me there). It's nice to look at the advertising and try and justify the upgrade, but do those things (some about the most minor differences - 'refined, not reinvented' as they say), make any real difference in the hours we spend using our computers each day? I couldn't find any that truly saved me time, effort or let me do more, and I looked hard.
    Now the down side...
I have a fairly new iMac (well less than a year old) with a dual core processor and 3GB RAM (and it is what I consider a very basic, typical, 'safe' setup, using the most popular brand name hardware/software, no games and very little software in general - i.e. my computer is not loaded with all sorts of 'stuff', or any uncommon 'stuff'). With SL, the OS related software (e.g. Safari) now runs in 64 bit (confirmed), but I have found no perceptible speed increase in anything from the basic to the graphic intensive - in fact, I have found quite the opposite - very significant lags, commonly in saving files, opening dialogs and certain operations (sometimes consistently, sometimes intermittently) in many software programs (including Apple OS related programs, other Apple software, and 3rd party software such as Adobe CS4) - even simply saving an image in Safari now takes a painfully long time to simply display the dialog. The 'beach ball' has become a very common sight (where it wasn't in non-snow Leopard), and a great many of the other lags and slowness occurs without the beach-ball appearing at all (which is disturbing for a number of reasons). That, combined with (for me) the system crashing, the system simply hanging when left on overnight (set to never sleep/etc), printer driver problems, UPS status problems, screen zoom problems, various program crashes, and the Finder not working properly (doesn't crash but doesn't find consistently/reliably), all means that the SL 'upgrade' is 0% benefit and 100% detrimental for me. Even without any of the specific (to me perhaps) problems/bugs above, the lags and sluggishness alone has turned a beautiful Mac into something frustrating to use (especially since I'm very used to and LOVED how consistently responsive it was with non-snow Leopard).
With (non-snow) Leopard, my Mac was basically perfect, reliable, fast, everything ran right and flawlessly, etc - all the stuff Apple talks about in their commercials. With SL, Apple has severely disappointed, and added 0 significant advantages/features and made my Mac slow, sluggish, unreliable, unstable and problematic - just like the PC they compare to in their commercials. I have also been waiting/checking for a 'software update' re the countless problems I and others have found in SL - nothing has come, or seems to be forthcoming (perhaps I have missed some acknowledgement of the problems or pending fixes by Apple). I simply hope I will be successful in restoring my Mac (through time machine) to it's pre-snow condition.
Note: If you do try SL, I'd suggest you do a full image backup beforehand (which the OS install does not suggest/warn you to do, or do itself).
If anyone has experienced any advantages with SL (other than the few esoteric 'new features' already covered in the advertising) that outweigh the disadvantages/problems and that would affect most users in a REAL/substantial way on a daily basis, please reply. If you have an experience/opinion similar (in general) to mine, a short reply would also be appreciated.
I hope Apple is taking notice of these discussions, and remembers and returns to their previous quality/standards - sorry, but we already have PC filling the other type of market, and Apple is about something different (isn't it, still, I hope!) --- and, not to be (too) funny, but is it possible SL was really written/released by Microsoft as a sneaky way to level the competition with Apple (reference the latest Apple commercial with 'PC guy' impersonating 'Apple guy')? Forgive this last paragraph - now getting off the soap box

    Hi JasonFear...
Thanks for the info... and to clarify, mine was an upgrade (rather than an erase/clean-install - as per recommendations from Apple and the discussion board, regardless of extra work involved) - I have not tried an erase/clean-install.
One reason for my (very long) post was to cover my real daily use experience re SL (aside from problems/crashes that may be specific to me or certain software) - on things like Safari, page loads are as fast (perhaps imperceptibly faster) than in non-snow Leopard; however, it is during some user interactions, things like opening dialogs (e.g. save image as one example in Safari, other dialogs, menu/button selections, saves, etc in other software) that there are lags and sluggishness - it is not that my Mac now runs slow overall (it doesn't), it is that crisp responsive interactive aspect that has greatly and very noticeably degraded (and even so, not universally or always consistently). I too have a great deal of experience in doing upgrades/etc to large numbers of systems, but not involving Macs - one thing I've have found over the years is that users will rarely ever mention things like a dialog now taking 3 seconds to appear where before it appeared instantly - if it appears at all, they often just leave it at that. Also, these type of things (lags) were not immediately noticed by me right after the upgrade, or I just wrote them off as a one-time or circumstantial thing, but they persisted and became very noticeable and appeared in more places as I got back into using the computer extensively all day as I have always done.
I thought of SL as more of an internal upgrade to allow for the future (and was aware it may have limited immediate advantage) - that is also why I put it on rather than waiting (as I would have if it were an 11.0 rather than a 10.6) - I think the reality is that it will still be quite some time before it becomes a real requirement (for future compatibility). The fact that this 'update' is charged-for (though very inexpensive) feels more like a marketing/psychological thing so there is something 'new' to release, to keep up with the other guys, and not leave the Apple users feeling like they don't have something 'new'/current.
Thanks for replying with your experience and suggestion of an erase/clean-install (though so far it still seems to be a lot of pain for no practical gain, other than being ready for the future way in advance of necessity).
Though I am encouraged to see several replies reporting no problems, I am still looking forward to some replies with real-life experiences related to real advantages for daily use of most users.

I would buy it. The iMac you posted will be no more or less compatible for iPhone developing than a brand-new 2009 model.
It has the Intel architecture, which is the single most important point when it comes to future compatibility. I would definitely not buy an older PowerPC iMac anymore, as with the upcoming release of Snow Leopard, these PowerPC-machines are no longer supported.
Of course iMacs can get broken, it is just computer technology, afterall. I do not get certain mac users, which apparently think, buying a Mac will guarantee them eternal satisfaction, but that is a different topic...

  • Hacking application id equals() to allow more than one row per "primary key"

I have a read only entity whose primary key is not the real primary key
on the underlying table. The result is that I get more than one row per
"primary key". This is what I want. However KODO will not allow me do
it, because I am storing the collection in a HashSet() and the equals()
method on the application id object ensures that this set contains no
duplicates (as defined by the application id). At least thats how it
    seems to behave.
So, I have hacked the equals() method to do this:
    public boolean equals (Object ob)
    if (this == ob)
    return true;
// Doing this because we expect more than one row from
    // REF_CODES for the same domain/shortCode combination.
// This is ok to do (I guess?) as long as we are only
// doing selects using this class.
    return false;
Will this hack have any side effects? Is there another option? Like
using a list collection? Is so, which collections are supported?
    Thanks,
    Mike.

The "primary key" I am using it already a compound key of two columns.
The real key on the underlying table is a three column key. But the
problem is that the table represents two different application level
entities. I could deal with it when I was hand-writing SQL (I could do
a distinct for example) but now I am relying on foreign key
relationships since I moved to JDO. Not sure what to do. Best solution
is to rework the table, but there is a lot of legacy code (that other
teams use and maintain) relying on this table. I guess I'll use the
    weekend for inspiration ;-)

I would really appreciate if you guys work on the feature “ custom backgrounds for chat notifications”.
If users will be able to choose any image of their liking in the custom background feature if would add value. Currently some of the chat messengers provide this facility to the users which makes interesting to the users while improving user friendliness and satisfaction. Options that would include are
    Take a photo
    Choose from albums
    Search from web
    Delete
That appears to be a reasonably robust selection. In search, a user can use a built in engine to pull up images based on search and then select it as it their choice. Once you chose an image, it will be asked to confirm and ‘set’ as the universal chat window for all contacts.

  • Change default logon/startup/lock screen in windows 8 pro

    Hi,
I want to change my default logon screen, the one that appears when I boot. I have changed the lock screen within my account, but I can't change the one (that I beleive is) for the default user. I have seen some complicated steps to copy over a file
in systemdata folder for the default user profile, but It seems really awful to do it in my notebook (which is not joined to a domain, and it is Windows 8 Pro). So, is there a simple way to do it? Why my personalized lock screen isn't shown?
    Regards,
    MarianoC.

Thanks MarianoC, you got me closer to solving my lock screen problem.  Sorry about your lock screen presets issue, glad that is not an issue for me, as I see you have given up.  I wanted to post my more detailed solution description
here, since this was one of the fist places I landed while researching this.
I fixed mine by replacing the default Lock Screen image files.
You can find them here C:\ProgramData\Microsoft\Windows\SystemData\S-1-5-18\ReadOnly
Caution---You have to have hidden files visible, and you also have to understand how to take ownership of folders and assign ownership and permissions (it's not that difficult, search if
    you don't know how).
    I had 2 folders in that location W and Z;
The W folder already had my selected Lock Screen picture.
The W folder may have been the result of a previous tweak I tried, it had the newer photo I had selected already, if your W doesn’t have your photo and you have issues maybe replace it too.
If you don’t have a W folder I wouldn’t sweat it for now.
I had my luck with the Z folder, it contained the default space needle picture in 2 versions; dimmed and plain (I didn't look for a visual difference).
I replaced both of them with my chosen lock screen picture.
    There are 2 ways to do this;
1st is to rename your original file (add a 1 to the name, you can go back to original easier this way). Replace it with picture of your choosing with the exact same name as original.
You must assign full permission to the system account.
Warning. This method seems safer but I could not figure out how to assign permission to the trusted installer account, which existed previously for this file, this could inhibit some future compatibility.
2nd way preserves system and trusted installer permissions.
Create your lock screen pictures in a separate folder, with exactly the same names as your 2 original files.
Copy/Paste the files into the Z folder, you will get asked to replace existing.
If you say yes it should preserve security settings but update the photo.

  • WKT Contains Scientific Notation

I have a table with an SDO geometry column. Our data is stored in Web Mercator to simplify displaying maps on a web page. My team's preferred way of shuffling geometries around is via its WKT since this is human readable and widely used. So we are fetching the WKT directly from the database using the GET_WKT() method (right term?) on the SDO geoemtry.
The problem is that when coordinates exceed 10 million in magnitude, those coordinates are represented in E notation (see http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Scientific_notation#E_notation). I need to convert this WKT to a .NET object for use with a particular library, and while it supports conversion from WKT, it blows up on the E notation. I'd call it a bug with the library except for the fact that Oracle itself can't parse WKTs with E notation, either. SDO_UTIL.VALIDATE_WKTGEOMETRY returns FALSE for the WKT that GET_WKT() generated, and SDO_UTIL.FROM_WKTGEOMETRY throws an error. I've also tested that SDO_UTIL.SDO_UTIL.TO_WKTGEOMETRY returns the same WKT.
A large amount of code already depends on the geometry being in WKT format, which means that switching to another format would not be an easy change. For the moment, I'm parsing the WKT using SQL Server's geometry type (see http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/microsoft.sqlserver.types.sqlgeometry_methods.aspx), and then converting it back to a WKT without E notation using its STAsText() method.
Is there a way to force Oracle to not return E notation coordinates?
This is occurring in both of the following versions of Oracle:

    Hello jpmc26,
I am going to guess that most of us live our lives between the 180s and have not really noticed this before. I would call it a bug that needs an SR opened but is the bug on the coming or the going? If you look in the Simple Features 1.2.1 specification on pages 52 and 53 they clearly say that an "approximate numeric literal" of mantissa + E + exponent is valid. However, Oracle Spatial does not support the 1.2.1 spec. Rather they support something akin to the 1.1.0 specification. On pages 28 and 29 of that version there is no mention of approximate numeric literals as it first shows up in the 1.2.0 specification.
    So I would say either:
    1) Oracle Spatial supporting only the 1.1.0 specification and not much interested in updating to current specifications, should remove the output of scientific notation from the SDO_UTIL.to_WKTGEOMETRY procedure (match 1.1.0 spec).
    -or-
    2) Oracle Spatial looking forward to future compatibility with new OGC standards, should add support for parsing scientific notation to the SDO_UTIL.from_WKTGEOMETRY procedure (prepare for 1.2.1 spec).
I guess its a policy decision on their side. Please update the posting as to what they say as I am curious about the topic.
Many folks have largely abandoned these java-based, outdated, OGC converters. Feel free to search the forum for complaints, myself being one of the complainers. When you said "a large amount of code already depends" on WKT, my first thought was that must be really slow. Writing your own SDO to WKT converter in PLSQL is really easy and I believe that's what most of us have done. The other direction is more challenging but doable - I need to rewrite mine but its works well enough for straightforward stuff.
    Cheers,
    Paul

  • IPhoto 09 with a Canon 5D MKII

I use my 5D MKII and shoot exclusively in RAW. My workflow is to import using Adobe CS5 bridge (Can't wait for LightRoom to support video) and for future compatibility, I automatically get Bridge to convert the files to Adobe DNG.
Because of the file size as well as processing time etc, a lot of the time it makes sense to shoot in SRAW1, but as soon as I convert an SRAW1 file to DNG, iPhoto doesn't recognize the photo anymore. If I convert a normal RAW file to DNG, iPhoto sees it, if I leave SRAW1 as SRAW1, iPhoto sees it - as soon as I convert from SRAW1 to DNG, iPhoto can't see it.
PS : Before anyone asks about using iPhoto and not LR / CS5 etc, iPhoto is pretty cool for face recognition, Flickr, Facebook and then using iMovie etc
Any suggestions would be welcome as I have searched the net but I have no idea on what to do to fix this.

I'm afraid there is no fix. The DNG from the SRAW is not compatible with iPhoto.
Before anyone asks about using iPhoto and not LR / CS5 etc, iPhoto is pretty cool for face recognition, Flickr, Facebook and then using iMovie etc
Have you checked out Aperture 3? It already supports video... and all of the above.

  • Passive graphics card for 2-monitor setup

I am looking for a graphics card for use with 2 monitors in a dual monitor configuration that has:
    Passive cooling
    1 x DVI port
    1 x DisplayPort
I'm aware that CS6 can  make use of some of the more advanced graphics card features, such as Open CL, but I don't understand the technicalities of this, nor what this implies when choosing a card.  I will not be doing any video-editing, video playback or gaming.
    My questions are:
Would a card such as the Sapphire Radeon HD 6670 Ultimate provide full support for CS6, without being overkill? (http://www.sapphiretech.com/presentation/product/?cid=1&gid=3&sgid=1088&pid=1240&psn=&lid= 1&leg=0)  -  I thought that the "low active power consumption and Dynamic Power Management" features seem a good idea, since the card will never be used very intensively.
Or would the much cheaper Zotac Synergy Edition GeForce GT 210 be just as good for my needs. (http://www.sapphiretech.com/presentation/product/?cid=1&gid=3&sgid=1088&pid=1240&psn=&lid= 1&leg=0)
Or are there other types of cards that would be more appropriate?
And finally, can you connect a single-link DVI device to a dual-link DVI port?  (If so, I would like the DVI port to be dual-link, for future compatibility.  If not, it will need to  be single-link, for my current hardware.)

For the benefit of anyone searching on this topic in the future, a posting of this question on Silent PC Review (http://www.silentpcreview.com/forums/viewtopic.php?f=19&t=65413) yielded some extremely helpful responses.

  • Component video codec

okay awhile back i asked about why the quality setting couldn't be adjusted for the component video codec...not truly answered though i appreciate dick napoli for jumping in...anyway now it's just gone! no component video codec at all. anything else missing??? isn't there a file for what has been changed or fixed in each update? where is that at?

Many older codecs have been placed in "legacy" status in QuickTime Pro exports and the Player playback preferences. Some for security issues that are real threats and others because Apple is trying to discourage their use to maintain future compatibility with some of these ancient codecs.
Open the QuickTime Control Panel / Advanced tab and check the box to "show legacy encoders".

  • HDCAM Workflow Questions

    Hello Everyone,
Here is my situation. My client shot HDCAM footage (4 sony F900 cameras - TC Jamm sync) in 24p (not sure if is Advanced or not) and also shot an interview (2 Sony F900 cameras - TC Jamm sync) in HDCAM 30 FPS using green screen.
We are only shooting in HDCAM for the purpose of future compatibility. We will ultimatly master to DVCAM.
I am considering buying a Decklink HD Pro card to get the footage into my system. I understand I can capture the 30FPS green screen footage in uncompressed SD (in order to retain luminance for keying, I'll convert it to DVCAM after compositing).
HERE IS WHERE I GET STUCK. How do get the 24FPS footage to DVCAM? Will the decklink card convert 24 to 30FPS in realtime? Will I need to capture it in 24 and then convert it to 30? Unfortuntaly I do not understand this process, especially since I will be mixing frame rates.
Any help would be greatly appreciated. Any holes in my thinking would also be helpful.
    Allan Spiers

    Thanks Kyle,
You confirmed my hunch. Late yesterday, I spoke with the pre-sales guy at Black Magic Designs. He basically told me the same thing. He said I could do the pulldown usng the deck, using his Decklink card or using Nattress' standards converson software. My choice.
One more question. Say in the future we need to go back to the original HDCAM tapes and recapture. Will this be a problem with it having been in 24p? or is this were Cimema Tools comes into play and I create a flex file to reference the 24p?
    Thanks.

  • Airport Express vs. Airport Extreme... which would work best for me?

Okay, I've owned a few Apple products over the years, but have recently replaced my laptop with a Macbook Pro.  So, everything in our house that uses a wireless connection is made by Apple.  The only reason I say that is because my wireless router is a few years old, and I seem to be having some issues with it.  So, I am probably going to replace it.  I also mentioned the all-apple status because it seems to be logical that I would buy an Apple router to go along with all of this.  If that's a bad assumption, please let me know.
Here is what accesses our network each day.  One Macbook Pro, an iMac, two iPads, 3 iPhones, an Apple TV (about to buy another one for upstairs), and a wireless printer.  I occasionally use my XBox to play online, but not heavily.  We also work with teenagers at our church, and often have a group of them over at our house....and they all use the network with their phones.  I don't want to just buy the more expensive router so that they can use wifi... I just mentioned it to see if that would bring out any key differences in the two.  Does one support more users than the other?
Which one would you guys suggest?  I obviously like the price tag of the Express, but do not want to be disappointed...  Thanks!

    Compare the products here:
    http://www.apple.com/compare-wifi-models/
If the primary use of the AirPort will be to provide a wireless connection to devices, then it would probably be OK.
But, you cannot connect a USB hard drive to the AirPort Express, and it does not have the better wireless antennas that are present in the AirPort Extreme.
If you need to connect Ethernet devices to the AirPort, the AirPort Extreme uses Gigabit Ethernet ports.....10 times faster than the ports on the Express. No contest there.
The AirPort Extreme will also provide a much faster 802.11ac wireless signal, but you will need to have an 802.11ac device like the new MacBook Air, MacBook Pro or iMac to realize the benefit. Other wireless devices will connect at the speeds at which they are capable.
Either the Express or the Extreme will support up to 50 wireless connections.
For me, the Extreme is a "no brainer" in terms of performance and future compatibility with newer wireless devices coming down the pike.....but if you don't need to connect a hard drive to the AirPort, you may disagree.
