Microsoft buying Adobe, what are alternatives?

I just read its a real possibility Microsoft  buy Adobe. This will most certainly spell the beginning of the end of Adobe Support for Mac and the end of Coldfusion (the new windows only asp.net) - my solution, any number of languages but for me it will be php. Flash will become Silverlight...oh well, Dreamweaver will become some sort of Visual Studio hybrid or gone altogether but there are many solutions to that problem. The most pressing problem is a Photoshop and Illustrator alternative. 95% of my work is for the web and electronic formats so I'm not as concerned with some of the tools for print.
I'm not trying to create panic, this hasn't happened yet and it's not a sure thing. If it does happen I imagine support for platforms other than windows will continue for awhile albeit degraded before they fade out altogether. The problem is that Microsofts track record for creative products such as PS and AI has been less than stellar as has their track record with platforms other than Windows. Judging by past Microsoft acquisitions it will be the same for the Adobe product line. Android, IOS, OSX and Linux will continue to be part of the ecosystem and I absolutely do not want to risk being locked into platforms and tools that only support windows as it would be career suicide. I believe the same should be said for those that use the Windows OS to do their work.
With that said, what are the alternatives to Photoshop and Illustrator should it come to that?

The problem isn't so much Microsoft dropping support for a platform. It would happen though especially after the purchase. Once the deal goes through Microsoft can drop support for whoever they choose. I truly believe that products such as Photoshop, Illustrator, Indesign, and Flash need to be platform agnostic since they are so widely used in the industry and it is dependent on their success. With Microsoft you would be hard pressed to come up with argument that it would continue. History proves otherwise.
Platform issue aside. Microsofts track record for creative products has not been good. There is no reason to believe the Adobe acquisition would result in anything different. This has been Microsofts pattern. For all the complaining about Adobe I still use and rely on their products. A Microsoft aqcuisition would certainly create a need for an alternative. Microsoft has so many problems right now, and so many irons in the fire that it's hard to imagine the Adobe suite of products getting the attention they deserve. More likely they would slowly be absorbed into existing Microsoft products or eliminated altogether to eliminate competition.
Yes it's a shame the Adobe employees probably cannot comment. Keep in mind also that all of this is in the informed rumour stage. I have been a long time Adobe supporter, not just with Photoshop and Flash, but with Coldfusion as well, still, I think it's prudent to be proactive and explore options now and if they don't exist create them.

If you want a database username/password for every user that runs a report, you need to include un/pw in the command.
An option that you see quite often is that Reports use a general database user to run any report. In that case you can include the un/pw of this special user in the Key Map File:
    http://docs.oracle.com/cd/E17904_01/bi.1111/b32121/pbr_run013.htm#RSPUB23557
Of course, in that case you need an application in front of the call to the report to check if the user is allowed to run the report. This is how most web applications work anyway: there is one database user, and application users are maintained in the application itself.
Or you can use single sign on:

For example RMI was suggested above. However RMI runs over sockets. As does a number of other "solutions". And RMI needs java at the other end as well. Whereas BEEP or SNMP do not. But both run over sockets.
But at the very least "files" fit into your list above. And more generally "streams" since jave has a stdout/in.

  • Iphone nearly here in UK....nervous about it...what are alternatives.

Hope I am not repeating things already said and I have followed the build up to UK launch with great interest.
It is hard to tell whether the problems that occurred in USA will be relevant to UK since 1) it is a different carrier (O2 v ATT) and 2) presumably the build and week no.s are further along...
I am perfectly happy with my current provider (Vodafone) but being a devoted Mac user, love the idea of having everything compatible....various macs and macbooks, ical, contacts, email etc.
At present I have the ipod touch and have not been happy with the patchy WiFi usage. The places I go do not seem to have Cloud coverage and my home router which works perfectly on 4 difft machines consistently causes probs with the touch. I dont know if this is something that will improve with the iphone.
I live in the shadow of Hampstead Heath and mobile phone coverage is notoriously bad anyway. How will I know if the O2 coverage is consistent?
I have worries about Edge coverage.
    I have concerns about battery
I have doubts about consistency and accuracy of syncing w. ical
So...bottom line is does anyone know FOR SURE what the situation is if we sign up to O2 and then find out the phone is NOT suitable for any of the above mentioned reasons. CAN we cancel the contract completely with no penalty?
I had wanted to bring my own number over and have the PAC code from Vodafone but since I am so unsure, I think I will just run the two side by side til I have hands on and make up my mind. Will it be possible to activate PAC code on iphone AFTER initial activation?
And lastly...sorry for burbling on...does anyone know of a UK phone that syncs well with ical and contacts WITHOUT using third party software like missing sync etc.
Thanks for any help and views.
    Toni

I can't speak to the UK but I can talk to you about what I have seen in the US. First no matter what country or service provider you use if the coverage is bad you should not get the phone. Ask someone in town who uses O2 how the service is or look around online. I am not sure about data connection because again that is all based on O2 and their service. The iphone is just that a phone and coverage and connection has nothing to do with the phone but rather the provider. What you should not worry about is battery life because I have watched 3 movies for about 6 hrs and still had a some battery to make phone calls. I have no trouble syncing w. Ical. I do know that if you have reservations about the phone you really should wait until someone you know has it and ask them about it. I do not see why you would need a third party to sync with Ical when the US phone is already set up to do that. Again I do not know how things work in the UK but this is my $.02

  • IPhone 3G - thinking of getting one but... what are the potential issues?

I'm thinking of getting an iPhone 3G because:
    1. I've been writing iPhone apps with a friend of mine (already have two in the app store) and I think I'm probably the only iPhone developer in the world who doesn't actually own an iPhone himself. My friend and partner in this venture has worked extra time doing actual testing on her original iPhone (and we've had other beta testers too), but there is only so much I can do in the simulator. I can't develop multi-touch or accelerometer features without my own device. And I feel I shouldn't put the entire hardware testing burden on her.
    2. I like the iPhone browser and the ability to use apps and a lot of other aspects of the iPhone.
    3. I live in Japan, and switching from my AU cell phone to the iPhone is actually a bargain here. There is no money down, and the payment plans start at like $25/month to a max of about $68/month. So it's actually cheaper here than in the U.S. Even adding in the $10-$15 extra charge for 24 months until the phone itself is paid off, it's no more expensive than my current cell phone. And I can keep my current phone number.
So it would seem to be a no-brainer. I should just walk over to my nearest Softbank store and get one, right?
The only thing holding me back is this - every time (and I mean every single time with no exaggeration) that I have ever purchased an Apple portable device, including every single one of my many MacBooks and MacBook Pros over the years and the iPod nano 3G I bought last year, have had problems that needed immediate care and replacement or servicing and, in the case of the iPod 3G that awful "tilted LCD" problem that after 3 exchanges I had to have the consumer affairs office in Tokyo arrange with Apple for me to get a refund on.
I love the systems, I am using my MacBook Pro right now as I write this message (already been repaired twice and the trackpad is acting funny again - glad I have AppleCare), but I dread the mental stress of dealing with getting my new out-of-the-box Apple products fixed. I feel they have quality checking problems with certain of the product lines.
I just know that there is going to be something really annoyingly wrong with the iPhone 3G as soon as I turn it on - like obviously dead pixels, or a tilted LCD like with the iPod nano 3G, or some weird color discolorations, or something loose and jiggly like with my MBP battery cover or ... I don't know... something. It's just happened too often with me to not be wary.
So my question is this. If the Softbank store lets me turn on and check out the iPhone before buying it, what are the things I should look out for?
Are there common, well-known issues with the iPhone 3G that I can check for, similar to the tilted screen issue on the iPod nano 3G?
    Any suggestions would be welcome.
I would like to get an iPhone. I just want one with no problems out-of-the-box.
    Thanks for any suggestions,
    doug

But if it is something more subtle like "the colors seem wrong" or "the screen is not set straight" it will take more arguing. And I can't stand arguing about stuff like that just to get a good phone.
So... What were the problems you had with your phone?
Well the only reason I got the IPhones was because it was a birthday gift,And the first phone I got was the 16G in white so when we got home My screen was jumping so I said okay maybe if I power my phone off and than cut it back on maybe it will started to work a little better,While it didn't I just made thing worse My screen was only jumping it wouldn't come back on after that,So I was so mad cause we had to drive a 138 miles to get my phone and than my cousin came over and she have the same phone I had just got.But her phone look like she had it for some years the white on the back of the phone had turned a off white.
So we had to drive other 138 miles there and back for me to get other phone and when I made it to the Apple store I didn't know you suppose to call and make appt before you come up there about your phone. So I'm standing up there telling them that I just came yesterday and drove a 138 miles here and back and I just had to turn around and do it again today. So they went on and seen me and ask me what was going on with my phone. So I told them as they can see it was not coming on no more.
So they exchange my IPhone and I didn't get the same color due to how my cousin white IPhone was looking like,So I got a black IPhone instead.
So the new phone I got was working so good and than about two weeks later my phone would blink on and off and it would freeze on you during call's are anything. So you already know what I had to do again I had to drive other 138 miles there and back and I was not happy about that at all.So this time before I went I made appt that morning to come and they told me to come around 200pm but for me to try to be there at least ten minutes early. So I made it there around 145pm they didn't get to me still around 315pm.So when they final call me to go talk to someone about what's going on with my phone. They ask me for my receipt and I let them know I didn't have it cause they didn't give it to me cause yale told me I didn't need it cause yale was going to send it to my email address.
So they went to try to look up my email address,That took them other 30 minutes to find it,But they finial found it in there system. So they went on and exchange my phone again with no problem at all.
So this phone I got was doing so good, I really thought my trouble was all over still I saw a black line running down my screen of my phone. So I had to get on the phone with apple again so I can make other appt for the 3rd time,So I can go up there and bring this phone so they can look at it,Cause I thought maybe I was seening something are it suppose to be on my phone and I didn't know,But to come to find out it didn't suppose to be on my phone so they had to replaces my phone for the 3rd time.
So I bent haveing this phone That I got now about 3 months now and I got to tell you I went through **** and back to get this phone and it's really doing good really love the phone so much I'm so glade that I didn't give up on this phone because I was haveing so much bad luck with getting a IPhone I was about to give up but I am so glade that I kept trying. It really is a great phone to have it have so much on this phone I love it.I just hope I don't have no more problem down the line cause I don't want to go through this again.
I feel were you are coming from cause I wouldn't want nobody to go through what I went through try to getting my phone.
But I'M telling you,it might be worth you going through this at the end..The TV on this phone is so unbelievable I'M telling you,you going to love it.Before I go to sleep at night I listen to my i pod on my IPhone and I love it that's how I go to sleep at night are I might watch a movie that I have on my phone at night. It's a great phone to have all the way around I give it a ten.
And other thing you said you don't like to arguing sometime you just have to do that.you and me have so much in common cause I don't like that my self,I feel like why should I have to raise my voices to get my point a cross that's just crazy to me.
So how long do yale have to exchange something were you stay.

  • Learning PS Touch: what are some good resources?

I'm getting my Nexus 7 tablet this week and intend to install PS Touch on it for photo editing. Besides the Youtube videos I've seen from Adobe, what are some good resources for learning this app?
As an aside, based on just a cursorary look at PS vidoes, it seems that the videos are just barely touching on the tools and features of this app. It would be good to know if there are some resources that are more complete and detailed.
    Regards, David

    Hi David,
There are some helpful tutorials built into the app itself.
Also, in addition to YouTube there are some great videos here:
    http://tv.adobe.com/show/adobe-touch-apps/
We also have a Quick Start guide here:

I'd recommend going through all of these when getting started.

1-Do some more reading about a Windows "upgrade version" which, according to my experience, does NOT require you to format your drive... it upgrades over what you have, without disturbing installed programs... at least that is what happened the ONE time I installed an upgrade version, so I can't give a 100% assurance it will work that way with your computer... search link for all things Microsoft http://search.microsoft.com/search.aspx?mkt=en-US&setlang=en-US
2-Depending on the hardware you have, you may not be able to run CC programs well, if at all
3-CS6 is 3+ years old and is the ONLY non-CC version still being sold... unless you can find a "legal" CS5 somewhere

    Hi Mary and Matthew
You might find it helpful to "try before you buy" - there is a 30 day free trial offer for Office for Mac 2011, accessible from M's .com website.
You may be able to use this period to open and resave your old documents in a format that enables you to switch instead to using Apple's iWorks apps moving forward.
I initially intended to do something similar, but ended up buying Office as it provided an easier way (for me, at least) to continue working with years worth of old emails, letters, spreadsheets and other documents (from my PC days) without risking damage to their integrity, formatting, etc.

  • What are the best specs when building a PC for video & where to buy in US?

Our current video machine has died - a problem we have constantly battled over the years with our video machines, primarily from the heat generated in the system. These have been spacious, well spec'd out desktops, so while I'm budget concious I thought I'd reach out for advice before going ahead. The biggest problems occur when  rendering video, esp. larger files.
Also, I'm visiting the US for a few weeks, so that opens up some new possibilities (it's common to see much better pricing for systems in Canada than the US.)
    So my questions are two-fold.
    1) What would you recommend for buying a PC video machine today, while still on a budget? I would normally look for a higher end i7 processor, 16 Gb DDR3 ram, dedicated video card, ASUS motherboard with raid 0/5 and a couple of decent sized harddrives (not striped... had terrible experiences with my striped drives in the past). In particular, what would you recommend on the video card front for the best value/performance while not creating issues with heat (this is where I've had problems with a number of machines in the past)? In terms of harddrive management, are there some better options now for handling real time editing and rendering? (I would like to connect the 2 harddrives from the machine that has failed to the new machine.)
    2) I'm in Ft. Myers, FL for the next couple of weeks... what are some good options for either having a machine built or getting the parts to build myself? (I don't need an OS, but will install Win 7 Pro myself.) Normally I'd look to TigerDirect or CanadaComputers for a new system.
My main use for the machine will be Premiere/After Effects, with some Photoshop/Illustrator.
Any other advice/input on how to optimize the machine so that I don't have HDD issues and other isssues from overheating would be appreciated. Please keep in mind, I'm on a budget (which means I'd ideally like to spend between $800-$1300). :-)
    Thanks!
    Julie

I'm new to the tablet world and am considering buying an iPad, but I understand that Adobe Flash will not be enabled when I browse on web pages.  Can folks tell me how they've dealt with this, what are the consequences, etc.  There must be articles about this?  Thanks.

The iPad has a low powered dual core netbook like processor, so it's limited on what it can do and what it can see online.
Either you work within it's restrictions or you get a normal laptop for just about the same cost.
Here is a results of a browser functionality test on Firefox on my MacBook Pro verses a iPad 2 and others.
And to add insult to injury, Safari on a Mac is about 2x times better than Firefox on a Mac.
But Firefox on Windows is #1 and Safari on Windows is dead last, behind IE!
    Strangeness is everywhere.

If you click buy, it takes you to a sub munu, where you can select either "Full or Upgrade".  Select Upgrade, then select the version you already have.  The upgrade price will then be displayed.

Adobe never made a version of Flash for iOS and closed their mobile flash division a couple of years ago. You can get Flash on other personal devices but you will be using a 2 year old version that has not been patched for security vulnerabilities.
