Microsoft DPM 2010 MMC Crash Recovery

I switched a protected workstation from a server backup to a client backup.
Now when I go to the "Recovery" tab MMC crashes. If I remove the new protection group all works fine.
I did tell it to retain the old data. This may be (Hostname) listed below in the database. The new PG created was as hostname.domainname. Even after removing the PG this entry remains in the database listed below.
I found reference to multiple duplicate names in SQL and ran:
Select ServerName, Domainname from dbo.tbl_AM_Server
This returns the same results with the PG active and removed.
Hostname | Domainname
Hostname.domainname | Domainname
Is there a safe way to resolve this by removing the database entries?

How much content is in the farm and when are you planning to decommission it?

  • DPM 2012: MMC crashes when working with 2 particular protection groups

I have a problem with 2 particular protection groups that will not allow me to perform a backup to tape on them.  When I try to, the MMC crashes with the following error logged in the application event log:
The description for Event ID 999 from source MSDPM cannot be found. Either the component that raises this event is not installed on your local computer or the installation is corrupted. You can install or repair the component on the local computer.
If the event originated on another computer, the display information had to be saved with the event.
The following information was included with the event:
An unexpected error caused a failure for process 'mmc'.  Restart the DPM process 'mmc'.

As this appears to be a problem with just these protection groups (I am able to take tape backups of others without a problem) I decided I would try to remove the group, retain the data and re-create it.  When I right click on the group and attempt
to stop protection of the group or modify the protection group, the MMC crashes with the same error above.
One protection group is backing up and Exchange 2010 Archive Database, the other, Lync 2010 SQL Databases (and covers 2 different servers).
Does anybody have any suggestions on how I can get these protection groups behaving as they should and working again?
DPM is 2012 RTM running on a Windows Server 2008 R2 SP1 Enterprise physical server.  The servers being protected are running Windows Server 2008 R2 SP1 Standard, the Exchange one is virtual (running on Hyper-V), Lync, one physical, one virtual (also running
    on Hyper-V).

    Hi
First of all verify that below services are running and also check which user account is uses for running the DPM and SQL services.

    DPM Replication Agent

  • Microsoft DPM 2010 no longer works for WSS 3.0 SP3 farm since moving farm to new SQL cluster

    Hi,
I've had Microsoft DPM (first 2007, then 2010) backing up my WSS 3.0 SP3 farm since 2009.  This weekend, I had to migrate the WSS farm to a new SQL 2008 SP1 cluster.  I am using a SQL alias after the move.  I mean, I set the alias up several
weeks before the move, but the alias name and server name were the same - SQL01.  Now the alias name is SQL01 and the server name is SQL02.  I know, that's exactly the way you shouldn't do it, but this farm is just months away from being decommissioned,
so I don't want to rock the boat.
So, here's the problem.  Right after the SQL migration, I get a warning in DPM at the start of a recovery point creation session that states that all of the content databases have been deleted from the farm and are no longer protected.  I thought
the best thing to do would be to delete and recreate the protection group.  Big mistake.  I deleted the protection group, that was just protecting the farm, and kept the replica data (14 weeks worth).  When I try to create a new protection group,
I can expand the SharePoint farm underneath the assigned WFE, but I get the dreaded pop-up: "DPM cannot protect this SharePoint farm as it cannot detect the configuration of the dependent SQL databases. (ID: 32008)"  I've verified that the three
suggested items in the error message are indeed functioning correctly, but I cannot get past this error.  The WFE appears to be configured correctly, as I have run the enablesharepointprotection command using an account that is both a farm admin and a
local admin on the WFE.  When I run resolveallsqlaliases, it does show all of my content databases with the appropriate alias name and logical path.  On the SQL server, both the SQL Server VSS writer and Volume Shadow Copy services are up and running,
as well as the DPMRA service, which I manually started when trying to create the protection group.  I have the SQL Server VSS Writer service running as the same farm admin account that I configured on the WFE.
So, I'm not sure where to go next.  It appears that the issue doesn't lie with the WFE since it can enumerate all of the content databases correctly.  Is there something I'm missing on the SQL server?  Oh, and I have the VSS and DPMRA services
set up the same on both nodes.  I've been working on this since yesterday and I'm at my wits end!
Any help or suggestions would be much appreciated!
    Thanks,
    Mike

  • DPM 2010 Shell Cmdlets usage leading to Powershell crash

    Hi all,
I have 71 DPM 2010 servers located at various places in the world. The most of them have a good and reliable network connection while some of them are connected via Sat-Link. All of my DPM 2010 servers have the same version, and are all running in identical
W2K8 Servers with Powershell 3 installed on them. I've made a script to inventorize Datasource Replica disk usage/allocation, shadow volume disk usage/allocation and the number of recovery points, their size. The goal of this script is to do the job that DPM
2010 should normaly do, for instance, deleting recovery points above retention date because it is not always the case... File recovery points number grows to their maximum (64) and for system State (because there is no User recovery on these ressources) their
number can be above 100 and generally it's about 150...
The script is running well locally, but if I try yo run a single Get-Datasource from one of my servers targeting another server, sometimes it leads to a simple Powershell crash... I also tried an invoke-command as job it's the same, the job returns nothing
but it is marked as completed or sometimes as failed. This happens always on some server and on the other only sometimes...
I really don't understand where is the origin of this problem... As anyone encountered such behaviour ?
Thanks a lot in advance ;-)

I did not find a solution to my problem yet, but I solved a part of it...
The first of all "Powershell crash" was solved by issuing a Disconnect-DPMServer before each Get-DataSource...
The second problem solved was the fact that the Get-DataSource cmdlet required the parameter <DPMServer> to be fully in Uppercase...
The last problem remaining is the Invoke-command that continue to fail... Here is my code :
    $DPMServerStatusList = @()
    foreach($DPMServer in $DPMServerList){
    if(Test-Connection -Count 1 -BufferSize 16 -ComputerName $DPMServer){

  • MMC crashing when opening DPM 2012 management console

Just like the subject says, the console crashes whether opening natively or if we try and add the DPM snap-in to mmc.exe. We get a generic 999 event being thrown that a dead end.
The server is fully patched and everything worked through last Friday. Monday morning it was not. Backups are still being done but we don't have the console to visually check and would rather get that up than wrangle with powershell in the interim. We thought
we would post here before re-installing to see if anyone had any suggestions. We've already tried restarting the service as some other threads have suggested.
Here is an excerpt from the crash report:

    Hi
SP1 for DPM 2012 might fix the issue.
Here is a similar thread that applies to DPM 2007 but possibly the same as DPM 2012, possibly that the DPM service is crashing:

  • MMC crashes when attempting modification of a protection group in DPM 2012 SP1 RU3

    Hi All,
I've got a problem with my DPM 2012 SP1 server for a few weeks now. It's backing up and restoring fine, but when I attempt to modify any protection group, the MMC crashes. This happens even before the modify protection group dialog is displayed, just a few
seconds after clicking 'modify' with the protection group selected.
it was running DPM 2012 SP1 RU1, is now running RU3, this update did not make the difference I was hoping for. Also installation of the DPM console on a remote management server results in the exact same problem.
Below is the error message. Has anyone else had this or a similar problem and solved it?
    Thanks,
    Jacob

  • DPM 2010 installation failure (SQL-server Reporting Services Problem)

    Hi everyone,
The last 2 days I have been trying to get DPM 2010 installed on a DC. I know this is not recommended, but for our company with the current setup it's the only way to do it.
I have been reading some Microsoft articles (http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/ff399416.aspx) about doing this but I fail to do so.
I have made all of the right service accounts (I guess) and am doing everything in the guide but still get the same error message over and over again:
Setup has detected that the installation of Reporting Services is not correctly configured or no instance of Reporting Services is linked to DPM2010 of SQL Server
I just can't get my head around it. This is the error message when I try to install DPM 2010 using an existing SQL-database which I have configured in the SQL 2008-server sp1 installation.
I have enclosed some screenshots so you could maybe check some things that are not correct? Hopefully we can get this issue resolved, because it's driving me crazy to be honest!
Physical server which is ADC and where I need to install SQL-server and DPM: VMBACKUP
The service account for DPM is: DPMSQLSvcsAcct
Also have another service account: DPMR$VMBACKUP
I have also enclosed the error log located in C:\DPMLogs\

This is the DOM error log:

  • Dpm 2010 exchange 2010 backups are failing

Hi, I'm getting an error which does not seem to match in the DPM 2010 ID codes. Randomly, I have backups of an exchange 2010 DAG that are failing. The backup will run for a short time (5mints..up to 10minuts) and then will fail with the following error:
    Type: Recovery point
    Status: Failed
Description: Backup failed as another copy of 'user' database is currently being backed up. (ID 32628 Details: Internal error code: 0x80990D51)
     More information
    End time: 4/25/2011 10:37:27 PM
    Start time: 4/25/2011 10:26:55 PM
    Time elapsed: 00:10:31
    Data transferred: 0 MB
    Cluster node -
    Recovery Point Type Incremental Sync
    Source details: 06001
    Protection group: EXCH2010 - 06001
I've tried restarting the DPM server to troubleshoot. I say this happens randomly because I've had some backups successfully complete against the same exchange server. The only other item that seems odd is when creating protection groups against the DAG,
the intial lookup seems to take forever. Not sure what to try next.

    Hello,
As DPM relies on the exchange writer to take the snapshot for the backup, if the backupinprogress flag is set to true and it does not seem get out of this state even when there is no actual backup in place, then at this point DPM is the victim.
As far as I am aware the only way is to clear that flag is to:
    a.) Reboot the exchange server
    or
    b.) Restart the information store
    In some cases even:
1.) Either Activate all other databases on another Node except for the Problem Database, and Dismount the Problem database temporarily
    Or:
1.)Dismount all Databases on this Node including the problem database
2.)Restart the Exchange Information Store Service.
    3.)Mount any dismounted databases
You may want to redirect this question below to the exchange 2010 forum of:
"if the backupinprogress is set to true when it should be set to false as there really is no backup being taken, then how can I reset it without having to perform:
    a.) reboot of exchange
b.) restart of the information store"

  • DPM 2010 to DPM 2012 Upgrade

    Hello
We did an in-place upgrade on a few of our DPM 2010 servers to DPM 2012 and it went well. In the Reporting section, we have configured tape management reports on a weekly basis. The issue is that the information on 'overdue tapes' is not mentioned in the
report which is now being sent. This issue persists on all the DPM servers that we upgraded. Any suggestion?

  • VM Protection running on Hyper-V 2012 R2 with DPM 2010

    Hi everyone,
We recently setup  a new Hyper-V 2012 R2 server hosting virtual machine running with a Win2012 R2 server OS and 2008R2 standard Edition
Our backup solution is still running DPM 2010.
As I understand from the DPM Protection Support Matrix, You can only protect virtual machine running on a hyper-v server under Windows 2012 R2 OS with DPM 2012 R2. Isn't there possible any walkaround to have the vm protection working on dpm2010?
Otherwise, if we choose to protect the VM at guest level instead of host-level, is DPM able to perform the recovery point?
For instance, we've got a VM running a SQL database. We would like specifically to back up that SQL  database running on that virtual machine. Is DPM able to perfom that job?
    Regards,
    Evan

    Hi,
To remain in a supported configuration you need to a DPM 2012 R2 server to protect the Windows 2012 R2 hyper-v server.  Unfortunately, the path to get there from DPM 2012 is not an easy one.
    Upgrade steps.

System Requirements for DPM in System Center 2012
    http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/hh757757.aspx
    1) On DPM 2010 install the latest update: KB2751231 Description of hotfix rollup package 7 for System Center Data Protection Manager 2010
    2) Update the Agents to 3.0.8195.0
    3) Backup the DPM 2010 database.
    4) Upgrade to DPM 2012 and update agents.
    5) Install the latest DPM 2012 update and Update agents.
    6) Backup the DPM 2012 database.
    7) Upgrade to DPM 2012 Sp1 and update agents.

    11) Upgrade to DPM 2012 R2 and update agents
    12) Install latest DPM 2012 R2 update and update agents.
Else, you could stand up a new dedicated DPM 2012 R2 server from scratch to protect that new server and leave the DPM 2010 as is for current protection.

  • Migrate data from DPM 2010 to DPM 2012

    Hello.
I am currently using DPM 2010. I want to move to DPM 2012, but not as an upgrade. I am using a 20 TB storage pool for nightly backups and tape for weekly backups. The goal of the upgrade is to upgrade the OS as well as DPM, so this will be a fresh installation,
not an in place upgrade. Is there a way to get the recovery point information for tapes and the storage pool migrated into DPM 2012 from DPM 2010?

This topic is closer to system center forum and even there the answer is well beyond the scope. I would recommend

  • DPM 2010 Short and Long Term goals

My question is related to size restrictions.
Our existing DPM 2010 is setup with two protections groups, System State, and a Default (file) protection group. Both are set up the same. A co worker recently had to re-create a protection group due to his negligence and deleted it without looking at how
it was setup in the first place, since then I've been having errors in backing up to tape:
Synchronization frequency is set to just before recovery point
    Short term goals are:
Recovery points are at 8:00 AM, 12:00PM, 6:00PM Everyday, Express Full is 8:00PM Everyday
    Long term goals are:
Retention range 2 weeks, Frequency Weekly (1 recovery point every 1 week for the last 2 weeks)
Full backups are set to Saturday at 11:00 PM
Here's the thing, we have 3x3TB external drives that, historically have been swapped out weekly (Monday mornings, using Firestreamer for tape emulation). Since the co-worker broke, and re-created the protection groups, when we view DPM Console on Monday
morning, we see that the backup jobs are failing, the 3TB drive is full.
Could this 3TB drive be full due to this weekly swapping out when it is set to a retention range of 2 weeks? Obviously, it could be because the protection group actually contains that much data, but I'm trying to wrap my head around sync frequency, recovery
points and how that works into recovery goals.
    Any help is appreciated.

    Hi,
Right. After the registry key is added, all new recovery points written to tape will show they expire at midnight (12:00am) on they day they expire so any tape jobs that run later that day will be able to use that tape after the expiry
    date.
To prevent tape jobs from failing because there are no tapes available, you can also add this registry value.
During a new tape backup or if a tape becomes full and there are no other tapes marked free, Free (contains data) or expired in the library, DPM will raise an alert to prompt for another free tape to continue backup.  The same is true during a
restore, if the needed tape is not in the library an alert will be raised.  By Default, DPM It will wait for
1 hour before failing the job.
This prompting timeout can be configured by the registry entry “PromptingTimeOut” under “HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Microsoft Data Protection Manager\1.0\Prompting”
    PromptingTimeOut:REG_Dword:43200000  (dec) = 12hrs
    The Formula is   (#hrs * 1000 * 60 * 60)
    1HR =  1*1000*60*60 =  3600000  decimal
So for each hour to wait, multiply by 3600000.
    8hrs = 28800000  decimal
    Restart the DPMRA service.
