Microsoft Lifecam VX-500 and...inverted desktop colours.
Today I got an MS Lifecam VX-500 webcam for my old laptop . As soon as I plugged it in, it was immediately recognized by the Arch kernel (2.6.30-ARCH ) and the appropriate driver was loaded.
dmesg:
uvcvideo: Found UVC 1.00 device Microsoft LifeCam (045e:074a)
input: Microsoft LifeCam as /devices/pci0000:00/0000:00:03.3/usb1/1-5/1-5.4/1-5.4:1.0/input/input13
When I tried to capture the camera input (by asking VLC player to display the video from the /dev/video0 device) , it refused to cooperate since apparently I was not a member of the user group "video". As soon as I added myself to the group, the camera image displayed perfectly but all the colours of my desktop were inverted. When I closed vlc they switched back to normal. Later on I disconnected the webcam and tried to run skype. Immediately desktop colours were inverted. Same with amarok. When I removed myself from the "video" user group everything came back to normal!
Any ideas?
Thanks for reading this

MBP15 Desktop Colours Inverted???
Boss Man has been fighting this for about a week on his Mac Book Pro 15in
He uses a external 20 LCD Display as Primary monitor, and it has been working FIne foe 3 months... now in the last week when he starts the MBP and his desktop flashes up... it automatically get inverted ie the desktop colours and menurs and dosk are normal for 1/5 a second then flick to an inverted colour scheme!. When Boss man plugs in his External monitor, both wscreen flick as monitors are refreshed and Ext now is Primary, but desktops are still have inverted colours.
zapping the PRAM has no effect.
Loggin off gives the Login screen with normal colours but when loggin back in the desktop colours are inverted again...
So yesterday I did this fix... I created a new account and used that... well this works display colours do not invert :Yipie: but there is some time and pain involved when moving accounts due to the masses for files stored and permission that need to be set on folders etc.
So to me this seems like some corrupted Diplay settings.
My question is What display setting files do I trash to reset the Displays so If this happens agin It will be a 1 minute fix.OK my boss came back from a conference and when I asked what how the display issue is he said it was not the Black on White as sugested...
Close but no Cigar...
In fact it is the Universal Access -> Display -> Enhance Contrast Slider
It seems tha Enhance Contrast Slider will not stay where you set it.
It always wants to be set to Maximum - and this gives us the Inverted display look. When setting the slider to anything else then you logout-login or reboot the screen is inverted and the slider is set to maximum again.
OK... so which Preference (.plist file) can I delete to clear this? -
Synchronised iPad, iPhone, Windows Laptop and Windows Desktop. iPhone contains 500+ Contacts whilst other three devices only display 170 Contacts. I have Shared several Contacts via Message from iPhone. On creating new Contact from each Message, each Contact appears twice on iPad, Laptop and Desktop via iCloud. Assume that a Setting has locked out the Contacts other than the 170 that do appear as duplications indicate that each Contact already exists on the three devices. Appreciate any advice to see all 500+ Contacts on all devices.
Audiobooks normally only allow one download per purchase; this is also the case with alert tones, ringtones, and some movies. They need to be moved manually; if desired, you can network the computers and use file sharing instead of a thumbdrive.

Video Express 10 and Microsoft LifeCam
Hi
Is the Microsoft LifeCam supported in Presenter 10 video express? It worked fine in version 9, but every time I try and use it now after updating to Presesnter 10 I get an error message stating it is busy or not functioning (and it is not busy and it is functioning). But it works fine in other applications.

We get paid with cheques and organise, specialised coloured aluminium. I can not rid my apple devices, mac book pro, desktop IMac or IPhone of the american spell checker.
Everything, Numbers and Pages et al, always default back to US English. To cap it all we sell luminaires (yes this is a word used in our world of lighting design everyday) Mac and Microsoft always default - my docs have more words underlined in red that not. I once found a permanent solution for Microsoft that removed US english - and then the laptop died. Can anyone rid me of this irritation.GOT IT FIXED! WOW!
I did better than filing a bug report. I went to Apple support, chose chat support. When it wanted $15 or was it $19 I filed an exemption which was a choice on the page, based on the fact that I recently upgraded to Yosemite.
Got the chat fellow and here we go!!!! ;-) First off he sent me this app so he could see my screen. Then he had me do a few things like move the system configuration folder to the desktop and repair permissions. Then he had me reset the SMC and Pram. Nothing helped, all the ghost computers still showed in the finder.
As a last resort he had me reset my Apple Airport Extreme. Wala! Ghost Computers GONE! He said it was a combination of stuff but mainly it was the airport extreme when I installed Yosemite. Something to do with my network. We'll see if it holds or if the problem comes back but as of now there's no more ghost computers in the sharing part of the finder.
Thanks to all who offered suggestions. I hope maybe this helps someone else.

Microsoft Lifecam Studio stops being recognized while connected
Good day,
We are using Microsoft Lifecam Studuio webcams with Windows 7 PCs to faciliate desktop VTC with Polycom's CMA Desktop. The PCs are multi-user. We are finding that, without touching the webcam, it is stopping to be recognized by the O/S for some unknown reason,
requiring the user to unplug and reconnect the webcam for it to be recognized once again. This is inconvenient as the users do not have easy access to their PCs, nor do we expect that this should be a regular requirement for a peripheral device, once connected
it should remain active.
Are there maybe firmware updates for the Lifecam or a driver update that should be used to correct? (Currently using 6.1.7601.18208) Is the webcam being affected because of multi-user sessions?
Thanks for any advice.Hi SA Stewart ,
"We are finding that, without touching the webcam, it is stopping to be recognized by the O/S for some unknown reason, requiring the user to unplug and reconnect the webcam for it to be recognized once again"
Do you mean this device will stop working when we try to switch the user or it just stopped suddently ?Will the issue occur regularly ?
We can download the latest fireware update and software for the device here .
LifeCam Studio
http://www.microsoft.com/hardware/en-us/p/lifecam-studio/Q2F-00013#support
If the issue occured when we try to switch the user ,I suggest you to stop the process which is occupying this device from the task manager before we switch the user.
If it is possible ,we can try to connect the device to another machine to verify whether this issue only occurred with this specific machine .
Best regards

Microsoft Lifecam Studio HD not working with skype...
Greetings, I recently upgraded my computer from windows 8 to Windows 8.1.
My webcam works in the microsoft lifecam application, but when I attempt to use it in Skype, I just see the the swirling 'loading' icon for the webcam.
I would like to resolve this as soon as possible
ThanksWhen I say that it doesn't work with any webcam software in the desktop, I mean Skype, Windows Live Messenger, LiveCam Studio software, CyberLink YouCam and not even in the Microsoft Silverlight configuration.
I know that the webcam is working because it works in the camera app of metro, and in the sound recorder of the desktop. Of course I can see that the webcam microphone is working, but using any of the above software have no video or audio.
YouCam gives me this error message: "YouCam cannot connect to your webcam ( Microsoft LifeCam Cinema). Try selecting another capture device within settings, or close any applications that may be using this webcam and then restart YouCam."
worked ok up till last week, downloaded Have reinstall all new drivers and Softwear up to date but No LifeCam.EXE File is missing from Software (US)
Microsoft needs to fix this as cam only got as Skype Certified

VMWare Fusion and Parallels Desktop Benchmark Comparison
This is a quickie benchmark of VMWare Fusion and Parallels Desktop using Super PI, PC Mark 05, and Passmark.
VMWare Fusion 36932
Parallels Desktop 3094 Beta 2
Notes:
Both virtual machines were allocated with large 10+ GB virtual disks and 640MB of RAM. The VMWare CPU was configured with two processors. The Parallels CPU was configured with 1 (two is not available). VMWare reported the CPU as 1 physical, 2 logical processors running at 2.66 GHz while Parallels reported 1 physical, 1 logical processor running at 9.6 GHz (the combined speed of all four cores on the Mac Pro). The max observed CPU utilization in activity monitor when running under VMWare was 200% and max under Parallels was 173%.
I chose not to compare 1 VMWare CPU vs. 1 Parallels CPU. While Parallels does not support SMP or multithreaded processes on multiple processors the CPU utilization on the Mac went well above 1 core (173%). For this comparison, I wanted to see results of max processing based on what the two vendors have delivered, as opposed to benchmarking the underlying "virtual or hypervisor cpu" on a 1:1 basis. This explains why VMWare was 2x faster than Parallels on some CPU tests.
Both of these products are beta. VMWare is running in debug mode (can not be turned off in this beta).
Caveat emptor on these stats. This was an unscientific exercise to satisfy my curiosity. Some of the extraordinary differences are highlighted with <--.
Platform:
Mac Pro 2.66 GHz, 2GB RAM, Nvidia 7300GT
Disk 1 - OS X, 73GB Raptor
Disk 2 - dedicated disk where each virtual machine image was created separate from the OS or any OS-related virtual memory files.

I would expect the final VMWare fusion performance numbers to be quite a bit better than that of Parallels - they have almost a decade's worth of experience more than the Parallels folks in this arena, and a much larger development team to boot.
Once VMWare Fusion is released to the public, I think that you'll see a clearer distinction between the two products. VMWare will continue to appeal to the professional customer, with a more robust feature set and corporate-friendly features (and a correspondingly higher price tag); Parallels will fall more into the consumer/VirtualPC-replacement market. It will be interesting to see how Parallels will be affected when (and if) VMWare player is ported to OS X.
Interesting about the Parallels performance stats on a native partition - looks like almost enough reason to avoid the bootcamp partition approach altogether. Sharing a native windows installation with a VM in parallels is a pretty scary situation in any case, as the two environments have entirely different hardware configurations. Do-able, but there is some black magic involved (if you want to see an example of what I mean, try to move a windows installation from one machine to another w/different hardware sometime - it ain't pretty); I wouldn't try this in a production scheme unless I had REALLY good backups. -
Access Anywhere VPN and Remote Desktop
I have a recently installed Win 2012 Essentials server. I have VPN, Remote Web Access, enabled. I can use Remote Web Access and login to see my remote desktops and drives, but VPN is not working. Both are enabled. I'm not able to
use the wizard to config but my firewall has 443 open. My clients say they can't see the server when disconnected from the local network.
The VPN connects but says it can access the server.
Not sure where to look.

Findings:
Currently, Windows 2012 R2 AD DS role and RDS With Broker services can only seem to coexist properly in a new domain not an existing domain. Any attempt to add to an existing domain causes internal database user access denied issues and any attempt to
adjust rights and circumvent is dubious at best.
The escalation technician said it best. Out of 50 clients that want to do this, they end up not being able to help 5 right off the bat for whatever reason. As for the other 40 they might be able to help by running reports, adjusting rights and trying to add
the roles until it works. This can end up being a 20 day process. Basically they are playing whack-a-mole with user rights and permissions until something sticks.
We tried creating an OU where any other domain policies would not be inherited to see if that was the issue, a fresh install with different sequence of adding the Roles, no effect.
Given the errors I witnessed when running procmon and then trying to add the roles, the NT System and the Windows Internal database user had access denied issues on 100+ registry keys when trying to add the roles. After that the system is not behaving normally.
The errors displayed almost mirror the errors that would occur on Windows 2012 when those two roles would be added which of course is officially NOT supported on that system.
This blog needs serious revision:
http://blogs.msdn.com/b/rds/archive/2013/07/09/what-s-new-in-remote-desktop-services-for-windows-server-2012-r2.aspx
This is the excerpt from that blog: Single server RDS deployment including Active Directory. We now support running our RD Connection Broker role service on the same physical instance as an Active Directory Domain Controller. In addition, we published
guidelines for how RD Session Host could be used without the RD Connection Broker.
Microsoft Support was curteous and helpful and they were the ones who advised cutting our losses, which mirrored my hunch after seeing what was transpiring in the system. They refunded my money for the support call.
For me, it was an opportunity to find out if there was any way to configure Windows 2012 R2 in the Same manner that it was setup as Windows 2008 R2 and lay that to rest. The coexistence is poorly implemented. It is as if there was a reaction from all the deprecation
of bread and butter features such as shadowing in TS and the coexistence of AD DS and RDS to where those features were re-added haphazardly. (I have no complaints on shadowing on Windows 2012 R2 it works, just do not like having to go to server manager to
use it).
I opted for virtualizing the Domain controller to eliminate the incompatibility issues and that is what I will be doing from now on. I found free solutions for backing up and reporting for virtual machines as well as the suggested procedures for configruing
a Domain controller as a virtual machine on a Hyper-V environment and I will be sticking to those. Thus far the setup has been operational.
I am not allergic to virtualization, but for really small setups it adds additional time and considerations but if that is how it has to be done, so be it. Windows 2008 R2 days are numbered and since we can usually squeeze 5-7 years on quality server equipment,
buying a Windows 2008 R2 setup now is a borderline disservice in my opinion.
Hopefully someone finds this useful and saves some time.Hi,
Thank you for posting in Windows Server Forum.
Do you need any other assistance?
Based on your description, you are describing your story of successfully implementing RDS server with AD role and more regarding all RDS related scenario. For shadowing feature, you can use with command also. Below is the syntax to shadow a session.
mstsc /v:<ServerName> /shadow:<SessionID>
Hope it helps!
Thanks.

My two year old has managed to invert the colour on a MacBook, so that everything appears in negative. How can this be reversed? I have explored Preferences, but can;t seem to see anything relevant.
Yes, he does have agile fingers and they are everywhere! I managed to find a solution to the problem by going to the Language section and resetting to black on white...
All bets and thanks for the response

Hi,
When we deploy new applications to users we use the new GPO for Win 8.1 called "Pin Apps to Start". There we specify the path to the application and it automatically pins to users start menu on log on.
But we want to have both the modern UI IE and the standard desktop IE on start menu also, the modern UI IE is already on the start menu by default, but when we add the IE shortcut to the GPO setting it doesn't appear on users start menu. tried the following
path: c:\program files\internet explorer\iexplore.exe
anyone know how to do this in Windows 8.1?
In Windows 8 it works, but since Microsoft blocked this feature to keep the start menu "clean", we need to use the Pin Apps to Start setting in a GPO.
Kind regards, Magnus LislevatnHi,
I want to know the detail GPO settings for the Internet Explorer, both Windows store and the desktop Internet Explorer, besides, does it work for Windows 7 system?
The Windows store Internet Explorer is an app, it is not located in C:\Program Files, the desktop Internet Explorer is located at C:\Program Files\Internet Explorer.
that’s why it doesn't appear on users start menu when you add the IE shortcut to the GPO setting and tried the following path: c:\program files\internet explorer\iexplore.exe
The suggestion I provided for now is to check whether it just happened to one Windows 8.1 machine, if this happens to any other system, the group policy is responsible for this, posting the group policy setting will help analyze this.

I see a mention of Google Chrome and VirtualBox in your log. Stop using those and see if the situation changes? From what we know so far, the problem is a software one (Apple's fault), not a hardware problem. Mountain Lion is supposed to fix the issue, which should be out in about a week. So you could wait til then, upgrade to ML, and see if its still crashing or not.
