Microsoft Live Search Engine, visibility to

Is there an easy way to register with Microsoft (as with Google) to be able to get my site recognized by the Live search engine. I've had some success with Yahoo and more recently with Google, but MS doesn't seem to recognize anything on my site -- no matter how good my description and keyword metas or body text.
Any help greatly appreciated.

You may want to sign up for a "Webmaster Account" and see what tools are available to you. Doing the same on Goggle is a very good way to get Google to index your site, I'm sure Microsoft is trying to copy them here...

Has anyone used GoDaddy's Search Engine visibility tool with an iWeb 09 site hosted through MobileMe? I love the simplicity of iWeb but would love to add keywords and optimize my site for web searches. Any advice?

Slacker radio and Live Search

Hi:
Another couple of questions:
1. I downloaded OS 4.5 to my 8310, which was successful. The reason I did it was to get Microsoft Live Search to work (which is still does not) and Slacker radio. I successfully downloaded slacker radio, but when I log in, I get "Login Failed (
Error Code 500) Failed to process request. java.io.IO Exception: Tunnel Timed Out." What's going on?
2. The issue with Live Search. It still doesn't work even with OS 4.5.

Are the META tags in a pdf file visible by search engines?

I have several hundred newsletters in pdf format on a website.
I am in the process of entering META tag information (title,description,keywords) through the Properties panel of each pdf file. Is this information that will be visible by search engines in a WordPress site?
I ask, because every post in WordPress has a place to enter keyword tags. The problem I'm having in WordPress is that every post shows the tag information rather than making it invisible. If the properties information in the pdf file does the same thing, I won't bother with entering it again in WordPress.

It is a high order probability that your SQL's report generator is creating the PDF, not Acrobat (which by design and EULA cannot be used in as/with server).
That the report generator outputs to an old-old version of PDF bears this out.
Wiki articles on PDF are very nice for those high level intro summaries.
To know / understand PDF you purchase and study the ISO Standard for PDF (ISO 32000-1:2008).
Rather than "PDF validation" you may want to consider addressing the appearent root cause of the problem(s).
You can change the email2fax application to one that can deal with older PDF versions.
You can change the report generator to one that can output to the ISO Standard.
(Perhaps the in-use application can be configured to output to the current version of PDF (i.e., the ISO Standard).

Making Flash Content Visible to Search Engines

When I was using Flash CS4, it published a HTML file that showed the text content of the movie, which made it easy for search engines to index the site. However, in Flash CS5.5, I notice it doesn't appear to do that anymore.
What do I do (step-by-step) to make my movie content visible to search engines?

Create all the text content in HTML first.... then use swfobject for Flash detection to display the Flash if the visitor has Flash, regular HTML text if not.

If you think that Flash is somehow bad for SEO, it's time to dispell that MYTH!
If fact, in some circumstances I'll use Flash INSTEAD of just HTML because then I'll have better SEO than with just HTML alone.

The link to World Barefoot Center in the above post is just one example. View the source code and you see a couple paragraphs of text along with regular HTML links.... but what displays is the Flash version of the image and Flash links.
The client provided the artwork for the page... and that's what they wanted to use a .jpg image. Well yes, that could be done in HTML but it would be virtually invisible to Google. So Instead I converted the image into a Flash .swf and used swfobject to display the Flash. swfobject allows you to create alternate content inside the <div> which also holds the Flash .swf, then when the page is loaded it detects if the browser has the Flash pluggin. If it does, it displays just the Flash content, if not, it displays the alternate content. Since almost everyone has the Flash pluggin, for most people the Flash version of the <div> will display.
The alternate content for that <div> can be any regular HTML text, images, media player, links, etc., anything that you would use if you were not using the Flash. Now the best part is that the alternate content can be "over the top" as far as optimizing for SEO, since it will not be seen by most viewers.
Here's another example of SEO with Flash.. again, the page is just a single image provided by the client:

View the source code. The alt content is paragraph after paragraph of information about the site, including lists and links. If it was just the HTML, it might be kind of a boring Home page. But for SEO I can go "over the top" in promoting the site, since most viewers will never see that part... but it's all indexed by search engines. The end result is BETTER SEO using Flash than just HTML.
On another Web site, a Flash video is displayed, the alt content is the complete text narration of the video. Now how many people would take the time to read that if they could just watch the video instead?? again, better SEO with Flash than without. In fact in one case we had first page search result from that video narration within 4 hours of posting the page.
On still another site with a Flash video, the alt content is another video, but a .mov version, which will, in effect play Flash video on the iPhone (not possible you say??). Well since the iPhone does not have Flash pluggin, it simply displays the .mov version of the video, while everyione else sees the Flash version.
So anyway, if Flash is a part of your Web development, you should look into using swfobject and alternate content.

Make Website More Visible To Search Engines

A friend of mine has provided the following feedback on my homepage;
'The Blog page I visited was presented as graphical images, rather than as text. That means you have exact control over the appearance, but has several disadvantages. Among them are that people can't copy & paste what you've written, and search engines may not find it. (I say may not, because there seems to be some kind of text-based version that loads momentarily and then gets overwritten by the graphical image. Very strange! Search engines may be able to find the text-based version.)
I have tried to find my website on Google without success. How do I make it more visible to search engines? Is there some preference in iWeb that would help?

I wouldn't worry too much about the whole text-to-graphic conversion issue. iWeb does this for your benefit so that what is rendered is exactly what you expected. It is my belief that the negative effect of this on search engine results is also overblown.
Anyhow, the least that you can do to get your site indexed by Google eventually is to go to Google directly and register, verify, and provide a sitemap for your site. I have put down a set of directions here for everyone's benefit...

Is Microsoft SQL Server still capable of being the fulltext search engine?

We used to be able to use SQL Server's full text search capability as the search engine even though it was inferior to Verity or Oracle Text. Is this capability still available? Is the component still available?

Not sure which versions your talking about, but yes.
With 10gR3 you can use SQL Server and have full text searching available.
The install guide walks you through the various settings, but some things to note are:
1. You will probably need to use the free TDS drivers (google them)
2. When you create your database you'll need to set it to have a full text index or be full text capable.
3. You'll have to put a setting on config.cfg (actually change the one in there from DATABASE.METADATA to DATABASE.FULLTEXT)
4. Rebuild the index
Those are roughly the highlights, again, the install guide covers them, but you don't get things like optimized queries, or any of the cool stuff rom the OracleTextSearch component.

WHY CAN I NOT EDIT THE DEFAULT SEARCH ENGINE USED BY THE ADDRESS BAR (NOT THE SEARCH BAR NEXT TO IT) FROM BING TO GOOGLE?

I am asking this question again, because upon checking the forum for a solution I was shocked and appalled by the severe lack of grammar, punctuation and spelling I encountered while reading answers to this question. Obviously several people where to busy to actually read the question being asked and simply answered with instructions on how to change the default search engine for the search bar. SO, here I am asking the same question, why? because it still has not been answered and I myself still CANNOT find this setting anywhere. I use multiple browsers for different tasks, Chrome is KICKING the .... out of you guys Mozilla, why did you ever let your self get taken in by Micro-crack (Microsoft), if I recall correctly the inception of this program was partly motivated by the need for an alternative to the idiosyncrasies and vulnerability of Microsoft Internet Explore. This really feels like a HUGE step backwards, I would love to see a return to the days when Mozilla Firefox was and inspiration to developers and techs everywhere. And please will someone just answer the right question this time. Trust me when I say it will be obvious who does and does not read this in it's entirety.

How to expose Web App data to search engines

Hi Guys - Need direction please
My website contains a business directory (web app)
The web app items are in a secure zone (the client only want registered/paid members to create their business profiles) = customer submitted web app
It is also required that the directory is indexed by "elgooG".
When searching for a type of business on "elgooG", they want the listed business information found, with a link to the actual detail
e.g.: website.com\directory\Joe-blogs-plumbing
First problem, the web app item sits behind a login (secured)
How would you configure this so that we have the Web App item secured (paid), but also visible to search engines and general public?

There is no reason for the whole web app to be under a securezone.
Once you assign the owner of the item they can only edit it when they login.
All you need to do is have a listing directory on your site that shows these. IF you do not want that and it only under a securezone of course it will never get indexed by google.
If you want the public listing of these you just need a page and put in the web app module that outputs the list. Things like the edit link wont show unless your logged in.

Everytime I go to a search engine like Bing or Google and click on the link to a website, it sends me to the wrong page. I don't have this problem with Internet Explorer, so what can I do as far as fixing the problem on Firefox?

Anytime I enter what I'm looking for in the search engine and click on a link, it goes through multiple web addresses until it takes me to an indirect page, and the first few webpages on the link that appear during the loading process are the same. Unable to open any websites from the search engines. the ones I have tried are google, yahoo and ask. They opened until recently. The popup says" Firefox can't establish connection to the server." Ask worked last night but is not working now.

When I try to open a web site from one of the search engines a pop up shows stating that Firefox can't establish connection to the server. I can't open any websites through any of the search engines.

Do a malware check with some malware scanning programs. 
You need to scan with all programs because each program detects different malware.

Wondering if I should upgrade from OS 10.6.8 to yosemite as search engines are acting a little weird - fan can come on, slow to shut down and also concerned about Security as my OS is older and no longer upgraded etc...?

An SMC reset may resolve the otherwise inexplicable fan behaviour. Be sure to read the procedure carefully and follow all the steps exactly as written, even if they seem inapplicable or trivial.
