Microsoft Office 2008 and repairs

My sister lent me her copy of Office 08 to load, it worked fine for a few months, now no apps opens accept Word. I did a disk utility repair permissions. No difference, and then I discovered the disk utility was damaged and wouldn't open, so I re installed it from my Tiger disc, the D.U opened fine. But I am really puzzled as to why something used work fine and I now does not work. There is no message to say what the error is, it just attempts to open, the colour wheel wizzes and it just says in the finder 'not repsonding' in red. To which I have to force quit.
My sister has lost the original Office disc, her daughter got hold of it and lost it, and so we are using copies we made as back ups or off our external drives. My other niece had a copy and her Tiger macbook is still fine with Office 08. (but she had to have a new hard drive 7 months ago after a big crash after 9 months).
Any ideas why this might have happened? I don't want to risk reinstalling my Tiger disc. Maybe I should take it to Cancom where I bought it?

Hi Vanessa,
Sounds like Disk Corruption, in which case you don't want to do anything with it, not even Repair Permissions until you fix it.
"Try Disk Utility
1. Insert the Mac OS X Tiger Install disc that came with your computer, then restart the computer while holding the C key.
2. When your computer finishes starting up from the disc, choose Disk Utility from the Installer menu. (In Mac OS X 10.4 or later, you must select your language first.)
*Important: Do not click Continue in the first screen of the Installer. If you do, you must restart from the disc again to access Disk Utility.*
3. Click the First Aid tab.
4. Click the disclosure triangle to the left of the hard drive icon to display the names of your hard disk volumes and partitions.
5. Select your Mac OS X volume.
6. Click Repair. Disk Utility checks and repairs the disk."
http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=106214
Then try a Safe Boot, (holding Shift key down at bootup), run Disk Utility in Applications>Utilities, then highlight your drive, click on Repair Permissions, reboot when it completes.
(Safe boot may stay on the gray radian for a long time, let it go, it's trying to repair the Hard Drive.)
If all the above fails, then it appears to be time for a relatively painless Archive & Install, which gives you a new/old OS, but can preserve all your files, pics, music, settings, etc., as long as you have plenty of free disk space and no Disk corruption, and is relatively quick & painless...

Just adding to what CSound has said.
Pages and Numbers will change Word and Excel documents when they open and close them.
Sometimes the change is subtle and sometimes not. With the latest versions of Pages and Numbers, more likely not.
So don't think you are going to work with MsOffice files without problems. You will always have something not right and in some cases really annoyingly not right. Like having all the text from Pages appear bold in MsWord, or page breaks in the wrong place or some objects and graphics not appearing in one or the other.
If working between different Operating Systems and MsOffice files, I also recommend LibreOffice. It opens and saves nearly all file formats. Unfortunately not .pages or numbers. Yet. The folks at LibreOffice are busy adding to it all the time, and making sure it works in all Operating systems, Mac, Windows and Linux and they are promising iOS as well soon.

  • Microsoft office 2008 and OS X 10.8.3

microsoft office 2008 worked on my i-mac until I upgraded to lion 10.8.3. any easy fix?

Without any details on the problem, it's largely impossible to offer any useful advice. If you can post back with more information, someone may be abel to offer suggestions, but since this question is about a Microsoft product, you might have more luck getting suggestions if you ask in Microsoft's own forums.

  • Problems with Microsoft Office 2008 and 2011

    Hiya,
I am running Mountain Lion on my Macbook Pro and I'm having ongoing problems with the Office system. I'm doing a PhD so I use footnotes all the time and in Word 2011, the autosave function makes the footnotes disappear from the bottom of the page, but I'm not comfortbale working wihtout autosave running. I deleted Office 2011 and put Office 2008 back on my machine. However, since I re-installed Office 2008, the whole OSX seems to have slowed down.
Could Office 2008 cause my whole system to get sluggish? Is there anything that I can do about it?
I am also wondering if there is there another solution to my original Office 2011 problem with footnotes that doesn;t involve disabling autosave? Has anyone else has similar problems with footnotes? I just wiped my whole system and re-installed all the programmes, so I am surprised to still be having these same problems with Office!
Thank you for any help and advice!

  • Will Microsoft Office 2008 and Photoshop CS5 save to Time Machine?

I need to reformat my Mid 2010 15" MacBook Pro. I purchased Photoshop and Office when I purchased my computer in 2010 and have misplaced the disks since then. I need to know if they'll save to time machine... My iTunes also won't open and I'd like to save my playlists, is there any way I can access and save a folder or something on my external hd to get those back as well? Would you suggest I upgrade from 4gb to 8gb of memory, and any other helpful hints/tips for reformatting would be wonderful. Thanks.

If you did not exclude any of these applications when running Time Machine, that data should be there.  Open Time Machine and take a look.
Additional RAM is generally a good thing to install if you use resource intensive applications.  The best sources of Mac compatible RAM are OWC and Crucial.  Make certain that the RAM has the following specifications:  204-pin PC3-8500 (1066 MHz) DDR3 SO-DIMM.  8 GB RAM is the maximum your MBP will accept.
If the bank account allows, a SSD to replace the HDD would speed up your MBP.
    Ciao.

  • Microsoft Office 2008 Update Loop/Glitch for Survey

I just downloaded the new update for Microsoft Office 2008 and once I'm finished with it, a screen pops up prompting me to either take an anonymous survey or forgo it. Once past that screen it'll ask me to either register this product or learn more. Even when I try to register it mactopia never loads up and no matter what I try to open Office will only give me that screen.
It does this when I try to open a new blank document, or try to open an existing file.
Is there a glitch and a patch available to fix it? Or is there any way to bypass the survey?
SOS I need to write papers and take notes!!

I cam up with this fix from another forum that worked for me.
'If you are experiencing this problem, delete the following files:
    ~/Library/Preferences/Microsoft/Office 2008/Microsoft Office 2008 Settings.plist
    /Applications/Microsoft Office 2008/Office/OfficePID.plist
then launch any Office 2008 application and enter your Office 2008 serial number again...

HELP!!! i have a mac g 5 and i uploaded Microsoft Office 2008 for my 90 year old mother. Now when she tries to open earlier word docs, they won't open at all  :-(  what happened?  I SEE THE WORD IN THE NAVIGATION BAR BELOW, but when she tries to open a word doc, the navigation bar opens and closes around the Word symbol and nothing happens :-(  i'm going crazy :-( PLEASE CAN SOMEONE HELP AND LET ME KNOW WHAT TO DO?

If you have not already done so, repair permissions and restart your computer.  Or boot up from your install DVD and run "Repair Disk" from the Utility menu.  When done, restart back to your desktop, repair permissions and restart your computer. Suggest that you post in the Microsoft Office for Mac Forums if the above does not work.

  • Dreamweaver 8 and Microsoft Office 2008 for mac

    Hi everyone
Not sure if this is a Word or Dreamweaver problem.
    I am running Dreamweaver 8 on a G-5 OSX-Tiger.
I just installed Microsoft Office Home and Student 2008
    edition on my machine.
It install just fine, however when I need to paste a word
document into Dreamweaver it will not paste. If I go back to Word
2004 I can paste just fine.
    Anyone have any suggestions.
    Thanks so much

If you don't need it there is no reason to install it. Just depends really on what you will be doing if both would be good for you. Might want to wait on the second one untill you see if you need it or not.

  • Microsoft Office 2008 issues.  Help. Excel not opening and other issues!

I converted to Lion on day one.  I was able to use Microsoft Office 2008 without problem for days, then, just today, every time I go to open an excel file it opens, closes, then gives me the option of sending error reports to Microsoft.  Word opens fine. The program is totally up to date (just did the 12.3 update).  I repaired disk permissions, restarted the computer twice.  Still, the same things happen.  Here is the message I get for the Microsoft Excell Error Report:

    OTHER ISSUES
The other thing that happens is that whether on Word or Excel when I click on a file to open it, it keeps trying to open all the recent files from that program intead of *just the ONE* that I want it to open.  I also notice on Safari that when I reopen the program it opens ALL the websites I recently visited even though I don't have that checked as a preference...  What gives??????????
Any suggestions.  I am freakingout here, really need to get into these documents.

  • Font problems in Office 2008 and iLife 2009

I've been using a Mac for years, and have never had so many problems before. I'm am currently running Mac OS X 10.6.2 on a 2006 2GHz Intel Core 2 Duo Macbook. I recently did the 6.2 update last night, as I was hoping it would solve problems that I had been having. It actually made it worse.
Whenever I try to start up either Word or Powerpoint in Office 2008, the "Optimizing font performance" text pops up on the Word/Powerpoint startup window, taking around 30 seconds to a minute to fully load the program, while the beachball spins away (I have 600+ fonts, but it still shouldn't do this). I've Googled this problem before, and came up with the solution to uncheck "WYSIWYG font and style menus" in the Word preferences menu. However, with the update last night, it's gone back to the "Optimizing font performance" text every time I start up the program.
I've even gone as far to clean up the font cache in Onyx, repair permissions in Disk Utility, repair any problem fonts, fix duplicates of fonts, and even go into the Office Library folders and delete the font caches by hand (as recommended by Microsoft).
Also, I've just started having problems with iLife, including Pages. Whenever I try to open a new blank document or saved document, Pages freezes up, and I have to force quit. When I look into my processes (using iStat Nano), the font cache is running at 90% or higher.
I'm very confused and not sure what to do next besides backing up my data and reinstalling Snow Leopard altogether. A HUGE thanks to anyone that can help me!

"Optimizing font performance" text pops up on the Word/Powerpoint startup window ... (I have 600+ fonts, but it still shouldn't do this)
It shouldn't take quite that long, but that still is a lot of fonts to have open at once.
It seems to have worked for Word, but trying to open a blank document in Pages causes it to crash. Keynote opens a blank or template-based document, but as soon as I try to click to edit text, it crashes.
Office and Pages/Keynote are completely unrelated to each other, vendor wise. Something is going on at the OS level to affect multiple apps from both Apple and Microsoft.
It may not be as simple as this, but try removing all font cache data from your Mac. Download the Snow Leopard version of OnyX. Click the Cleaning heading and then the Fonts tab. Check all items (except Gimp if you're not using that), then click Execute. When it's done clearing the cache files from the system, it will tell you to restart. Do not skip that step!
After the Mac restarts, check to make sure OnyX has removed the Office cache files. Close all Office applications. Remove the following files. The tilde (~) indicates your home account.
    ~/Library/Caches/com.microsoft.browserfont.cache
    ~/Library/Preferences/Microsoft/Office Font Cache (11)
For Office 2008, the location of the second item is:
    ~/Library/Preferences/Microsoft/Office 2008/Office Font Cache (12)

  • Microsoft Office 2008 apple os-x install...does it require a restart?

Microsoft Office 2008 apple os-x install...does it require a restart?
wondered if i needed to restart my mac to complete installation? seems whenever i install a program that requires a restart to compltet installation my system crashes....
so i can for now only install programs that do not require a restart like iwork, or limewire.dmg....
    any experience appreciated...thanks

Not the area to ask but...
    A. backup
    B. repair your drive from another hard drive also running latest OS X.
Sounds like your disk file system and directory are problem (the hard drive itself could be failing or have failed blocks too).

  • Microsoft Office 2008 & other programs take forever to load & run

Ever since I installed Snow Leopard on my laptop, my entire Microsoft Office 2008 suite takes forever to load and to operate. It also seems to have slowed down the processor for almost all other applications, especially Safari. I have Snow Leopard on my desktop as well, and both computers are at least 2 years old but are Intel-based, and only the laptop (which is newer - 2008) seems to have consistent speed problems when loading the Microsoft software. I've uninstalled and reinstalled more than once, and it never seems to do anything. I've even used a newer version of the software with the same results. Any thoughts? I know very little about programming language, etc., I'm just a habitual user, and I use both computers every day, so the slow speed of the laptop is extremely frustrating. It doesn't matter if other programs are running or not, it's always slow to open and 9 times out of 10 slow to operate, and probably 7 times out of 10 it affects performance of other programs as well.

    Macintosh HD/Applications/Utilities/Disk Utility.app
I'm really sorry your having these issues. I used to always run apple's Disk Utility with past Mac OS. I'm really happy with 10.6. And one of it's big selling points at one time was that it's a leaner meaner version of Mac OS X.
Now, in using it, if it is new to you, it cannot repair the active start-up HD. But I think it can "verify" and look for issues and then let you know if you need to pursue further use of the application. To actually make repairs to your start-up HD, either boot from another HD or the Mac OS install CD. To do that, restart your machine with the CD inserted and while holding down the "C" key. It's been awhile, so I hope I have this right and am not misleading you.
It can be a tedious process. But good for you in having more than one Mac to work from.
My apologies if you have already done the above and are well beyond what I've written here. Disk Utility really gives and end user like myself away to trouble shoot a HD.
Also, inside your Apple drop down menu for "About this Mac," you can opt for "More info . . . ." This shortcut opens System Profile. While there, look for Diagnostics under Hardware. This tells you the results to the Power On Self-Test and when it was last performed. Also while there, look at your Memory. To the far right of its table for each installed memory module is Status for each. That should read "OK."
Best of luck to you! Slow machines are never fun!

  • Office 2008 and Acrobat Pro v9.1

I have recently installed Acrobat Pro 9.1. On my Mac using 10.5.6 I have also installed Microsoft Office 2008. Office was installed before Acrobat
What I cannot do is make an office document into a pdf unless I print from the application.
This is a problem because I want to process a large number of files and bind them. Using the tools in Acrobat is supposed to make this easy
The error that comes up is
Acrobat could not open XXXXX because it is not a supported file type etc
Is there a know compatibility problem or does anyone have any advice or guidance
The install of all applications was pain free
    Any help much appreciated
    Mark

In Word 2008 there is a Microsoft created PDF Converter.
This overcomes the problem Adobe knows about but rufuses to fix where if Page or section breaks are in the document the Pdf  starts over with a new PDF at each break and you end up having to knit back together. Finally after years of waiting for adobe to fix the problem MS decided to fix themeselves. It t still will cause the the PDF to be chopped up if there is a Change in Page orientation.
To invoke MS Converter once you save the Windows Document, go to File >Save as... , then from Drop down list Choose PDF.
Yes 2008 is a definite step Backwards.  With support of Macros for people that use Macros missing. The next version out will see a Return of macros and all macro features.
I still prefer 2004 myself. But 2008 does have its advantages.
