Microsoft Office 2008 Invalid Product Key (PID)

Hey all, i have just updated my Office for Mac Software which said that the update was "critical".
After re-starting my Mac and clicking in MS Word the message reads: "Office for Mac has determined that your product key is invalid". My product key is Genuine as i am one of three registered users after purchasing the Student and Teacher version. I cannot open any Office files and am furious to be honest that this can happen!
I have followed the following help on Mactopia but still cannot find these lines for putting into Trash: Can you please help me on this issue?
If your copy of Office 2008 was installed with an invalid product key, or if you mistakenly used the same product key to install Office 2008 on more than one computer, you must remove the invalid product key and enter a valid product key to use Office 2008.
In the Finder, select *_/Applications/Microsoft Office 2008/Office/OfficePID.plist_*, and then on the File menu, click Move to Trash.
Select *_/Users/username/Library/Preferences/Microsoft/Office 2008/Microsoft Office 2008 settings.plist*_, and then on the File menu, click Move to Trash.
On the Apple menu, click Restart.
After your computer restarts, open any Office 2008 application.
The Office Setup Assistant opens.
Accept the software license agreement, and then enter your valid product key.
The product key is located on the back of the Office 2008 for Mac DVD sleeve or on the back of the Install Guide.
Thank you in advance for your help and time!!!!!

how do you load microsoft office with your product key number?

I am assuming you have the key number, but not the actual software.  Like you I have the key number (my key number good for 3 Macs), but didn't want to dig out the disc to install on another Mac.  Going to Office's site I couldn't find any links to download Office, so I had to get the disc to load the program.  Once that's done the Office installer will ask for your key number.

  • Microsoft Office Word 2007 product key does NOT work

    Hello,
my laptop model is Satellite - A505-S6980 and I've been using Microsoft Word but everytime I use it, it prompts me to enter a product key. Which I found on the bottom of my laptop and it is saying its invalid and after 25 times that I try to access microsoft word  I will no longer be able to use the features it has. What should I do? if its the correct product key where can I find it? my microsoft word was already installed in my laptop so I do not have a CD. I've also already tried searching through microsoft forums and tried some stuff but it is not helping.
Any help would be appreciated. Thanks!

that is because the product key on the bottom of the laptop is for windows not office. the office that was installed on your laptop is a 60 day trial so if it has been that long you will need to buy it. if you dont want to buy it you can try open office which is almost the same and free. if you do want to buy it i believe if you buy 2007 you will get a free upgrade to 2010 but you would have to check on the microshaft site. 2010 comes out in june

  • How to install Microsoft Office without a product key

I lost my product key because my mother through my packaging box out before I was able to see the product key. Is there anyway I can get a new product key or able to get Microsoft office.

You can get a replacement key from Microsoft. Please refer to this document for details:

  • Microsoft Office download vs. product key card???

    Hello,
I just purchased a Surface Pro 3 and would like to add Microsoft Office software on to it; but, I do not know the difference between the download version and the product key card version.
    Can someone please enlighten me?
    Thanks!

I'm not sure if you are allowed to sell the key card... I'm pretty sure you can't either way. You may want to talk with your local bestbuy about that one.
office 365 is a subscription based one that i used more on tablets and such than anything else. I personally don't suggest it unless you have no other option. Home and Business has like outlook on it and such, the student version does NOT have outlook.
It can vary by your likes but I personally for the most part have gone all digital so I would always suggest digital downloads. I already buy all of my games digital.
I am not affiliated with Best Buy nor have I ever been employed by Best Buy. All of my thoughts and posts are of my own opinion and personal experience.

  • Time Machine did not restore Microsoft Office for MAC Product Key

My Tdisk failed and was replaced under AppleCare. I then restored from my Time Machine Backup. I used the (Command R Power keys to initiate this). It completed without errors (eventually).
All Apps that I tried seemed to have been recovered successfully except when I attempted toload my MS Office for MAC Apps, I was asked for my product key.
Unfortunattely this was saved in an email on my system and I cannot retrieve it since I cannot open my MS Outlook.
Does anyone have a solution I might try?
Has anything similar happened to others?
I would appreciate any help you might be able to give.
    Barry

There are a few apps that seem to record the identifier (UUID) of the disk they're installed on, as an anti-piracy measure.
I don't use that app, but as Thomas says, if you know (or can figure out) where & how the emails are stored, you may be able to use the TM browser to locate the backup copy of the email, and either use QuickLook on it, or restore it to an alternate location, such as your Desktop, and examine it there.
If you haven't done a new backup yet, Time Machine won't have "associated" the new disk with the old backups, so the backups of the old disk won't appear normally.  If so, you'll need the procedure in #E3 of Time Machine - Troubleshooting to see them.

  • Microsoft Office 2008

hi there - my Brother purchased Microsoft Office 2008 for mac and gave me one of the licence codes, however - the code that I used to register my copy is apparently being used by someone else and so Microsoft Office has stopped working.
I've now bought my own Microsoft Office but am having some difficulties registering this copy with the new licence codes - do I uninstall the old version? and also is there anyway of 'unregistering' the old version as it is now completely useless...
    Many thanks.

hi, thanks for the prompt replies!!
I'va managed to uninstall it fine - the problem is that when I use my new CD to install the fresh copy of MS Office, I never get the opportunity to enter the 'clean' product key that came on the CD sleeve - I presume that this is because my Mac still thinks that I'm using the 'old' product key, and consequently I'm back to square one as even though this is a fresh purchase it still thinks that I have an invalid product key...
    Thanks
I found this which might be helpful:
    Microsoft Office 2008
Unlike earlier versions of Microsoft Office for Mac OS X, Office 2008 does not remove its serial number, or "CD Key," when you run the "Remove Office" tool. That tool is still found on the installation disc and installed inside the "Microsoft Office 2008" folder on your hard disk, but it doesn't have the secondary function of deserializing Office 2008.
Instead, you will need to remove the following two files to have the same effect.
    ~/Library/Preferences/Microsoft/Office 2008/Microsoft Office 2008 Settings.plist
    /Applications/Microsoft Office 2008/Office/OfficePID.plist
You may navigate to these locations with the Mac OS X Finder by selecting Go > Go to Folder, and pasting in the following two paths (one at a time):
    ~/Library/Preferences/Microsoft/Office 2008/
    /Applications/Microsoft Office 2008/Office/
Removal of the OfficePID.plist file may require administrator privileges.
    Reference:
    http://www.rit.edu/its/services/desktop_support/mac/msofficeremoveserial.html
I would then add that you are most likely better off installing NeoOffice or OpenOffice, both of which are close to 100% MS Office compatible and both are free downloads and best of all, they work flawlessly and do not require any keys or registering, etc.

  • Microsoft Office 2008 not opening after installation...

    Hi there,
Let me run through the steps leading to this error. A couple of months ago I downloaded a trial of Microsoft Office 2008. It eventually expired and I left it on my computer. A few days ago I bought a license from Microsoft for Office 2008 in the attempt to get a free upgrade to Office 2011 before Nov. 30, 2010. After I bought the license, I was emailed a download link for 2008. I uninstalled the version I had already (Not knowing I could just enter the product key). I ran through the installation, though saw a weird "Product Key" window inside the installer before I finished installing. This product key wasn't even close to the one I got when I purchased my license. I finished the installment, and a update to Office 2008 12.2.7 appeared. I accepted and it downloaded. After that I opened Microsoft Word from my dock, and I was asked for my product key. I entered it and I everything seemed fine until Word officially opened. A window appeared telling me Microsoft Word wasn't installed correctly, and I could follow a link explaining on how to reinstall or uninstall office. I opened the link, and it told me about a known issue with Service Pack 2 (SP2) that didn't allow some xml to launch with all office applications. To note, this error happened with all Office applications except for messenger, project templates, and my day. Everything else showed the error message. Back to the xml issue page. I was told to download an update to 12.2.1. Which is very redundant, because I had updated to 12.2.7! I downloaded the update, opened it, it found the disk... an error appeared telling me it couldn't find the proper value or files. Basically it meant, 12.2.1 was pointless to install because I had updated to 12.2.7. I decided to uninstall this version and re-download. I did this many times after, and the same stuff happened. After the 3rd time I re-download Office 2008, I uninstalled and nothing seemed to be uninstalling. The uninstaller found no indication that Office 2008 was on the machine. I opened AppZapper and dealt with the installation that way. So, if anyone with the knowledge of fixing this, please comment and help me. New trimester in school next week, and need a Office badly.

Just because Office Mac is written by Microsoft, doesn't mean an issue with it falls under the category of "Windows Compatibility" as there's nothing "Windows" about it.
Regardless, Microsoft's forums are the best place to get your answer, as it's their product and they have Microsoft appointed "MVPs" there to assist.

  • Is Microsoft Office 2008 compatible with OS X Yosemite?

Is Microsoft Office 2008 compatible with OS X Yosemite? My Word, Excel and PowerPoint files won't open since updating my OS.

Your Office installation sounds corrupted. I would reinstall Office, but you must first do a complete removal of it. I did not write this note, but it should apply to Office 2008. You will just need to locate the version equivalents at the MS site. You might also check inside the Office 2008 folder for an uninstaller.
Your MS Office 2011 may have become corrupted.  Reinstalling Office 2011 can address problems that you may be experiencing.
First - find your Office 2011 install disc with the product key # - and only then remove Office according to MS instructions
    http://support.microsoft.com/kb/2398768.
Or go here to DianefromOregon's site for help removing Office 2011: http://www.officeformachelp.com/2012/12/office-for-mac-2011-remove-office/.
    Then Reinstall from DVD
    Then enter your Product #
After successfully reinstalling Office 2011, update your Office product using the Software update within Office called Microsoft Update or going to the Help menu within Word or Excel or PowerPoint and select Update.
It may take a few times before you get to final upgrade to current Office version.
It should be 14.4.8 as of current date.

Note is updated as of February 25, 2015
Or you can do all of this manually:
    Uninstalling Software: The Basics
Most OS X applications are completely self-contained "packages" that can be uninstalled by simply dragging the application to the Trash.  Applications may create preference files that are stored in the /Home/Library/Preferences/ folder.  Although they do nothing once you delete the associated application, they do take up some disk space.  If you want you can look for them in the above location and delete them, too.
Some applications may install an uninstaller program that can be used to remove the application.  In some cases the uninstaller may be part of the application's installer, and is invoked by clicking on a Customize button that will appear during the install process.
Some applications may install components in the /Home/Library/Applications Support/ folder.  You can also check there to see if the application has created a folder.  You can also delete the folder that's in the Applications Support folder.  Again, they don't do anything but take up disk space once the application is trashed.
Some applications may install a startupitem or a Log In item.  Startupitems are usually installed in the /Library/StartupItems/ folder and less often in the /Home/Library/StartupItems/ folder.  Log In Items are set in the Accounts preferences.  Open System Preferences, click on the Accounts icon, then click on the LogIn Items tab.  Locate the item in the list for the application you want to remove and click on the "-" button to delete it from the list.
Some software use startup daemons or agents that are a new feature of the OS.  Look for them in /Library/LaunchAgents/ and /Library/LaunchDaemons/ or in /Home/Library/LaunchAgents/.
If an application installs any other files the best way to track them down is to do a Finder search using the application name or the developer name as the search term.  Unfortunately Spotlight will not look in certain folders by default.  You can modify Spotlight's behavior or use a third-party search utility, EasyFind, instead.
Some applications install a receipt in the /Library/Receipts/ folder.  Usually with the same name as the program or the developer.  The item generally has a ".pkg" extension.  Be sure you also delete this item as some programs use it to determine if it's already installed.
There are many utilities that can uninstall applications.  Here is a selection:
        1. AppZapper
        2. AppDelete
        3. Automaton
        4. Hazel
        5. AppCleaner
        6. CleanApp
        7. iTrash
        8. Amnesia
        9. Uninstaller
      10. Spring Cleaning

  • Microsoft office 2008 and OS X 10.8.3

microsoft office 2008 worked on my i-mac until I upgraded to lion 10.8.3. any easy fix?

Without any details on the problem, it's largely impossible to offer any useful advice. If you can post back with more information, someone may be abel to offer suggestions, but since this question is about a Microsoft product, you might have more luck getting suggestions if you ask in Microsoft's own forums.

  • Microsoft office 2008 on new macbook air

I am trying to install my old microsoft office 2008: home and student on my new macbook air with os x mavericks. Microsofts home page is telling me that this is an unsupported product. Can i still install it or do i actually have to buy a new office-package? I can't afford this and would like to use one of the two remaining users on my old office-package, since i hav only used one. Can someone help me with this?

Good question, all I can find online are updates, not full versions. Assuming that it is no longer available for download (it is 6 years old now) you will have to buy an external drive and use it to install from your discs.
    Edit:
Found a download on CNET, download it, then very carefully install it, CNET has a bad habit of 'adding' things to downloads so read what the installer dialog boxes say.
    The download is here
Here is a better source to download from, Microsoft Office 2008. version 12.3.3

  • Microsoft Office 2008 & other programs take forever to load & run

Ever since I installed Snow Leopard on my laptop, my entire Microsoft Office 2008 suite takes forever to load and to operate. It also seems to have slowed down the processor for almost all other applications, especially Safari. I have Snow Leopard on my desktop as well, and both computers are at least 2 years old but are Intel-based, and only the laptop (which is newer - 2008) seems to have consistent speed problems when loading the Microsoft software. I've uninstalled and reinstalled more than once, and it never seems to do anything. I've even used a newer version of the software with the same results. Any thoughts? I know very little about programming language, etc., I'm just a habitual user, and I use both computers every day, so the slow speed of the laptop is extremely frustrating. It doesn't matter if other programs are running or not, it's always slow to open and 9 times out of 10 slow to operate, and probably 7 times out of 10 it affects performance of other programs as well.

    Macintosh HD/Applications/Utilities/Disk Utility.app
I'm really sorry your having these issues. I used to always run apple's Disk Utility with past Mac OS. I'm really happy with 10.6. And one of it's big selling points at one time was that it's a leaner meaner version of Mac OS X.
Now, in using it, if it is new to you, it cannot repair the active start-up HD. But I think it can "verify" and look for issues and then let you know if you need to pursue further use of the application. To actually make repairs to your start-up HD, either boot from another HD or the Mac OS install CD. To do that, restart your machine with the CD inserted and while holding down the "C" key. It's been awhile, so I hope I have this right and am not misleading you.
It can be a tedious process. But good for you in having more than one Mac to work from.
My apologies if you have already done the above and are well beyond what I've written here. Disk Utility really gives and end user like myself away to trouble shoot a HD.
Also, inside your Apple drop down menu for "About this Mac," you can opt for "More info . . . ." This shortcut opens System Profile. While there, look for Diagnostics under Hardware. This tells you the results to the Power On Self-Test and when it was last performed. Also while there, look at your Memory. To the far right of its table for each installed memory module is Status for each. That should read "OK."
Best of luck to you! Slow machines are never fun!
