Microsoft Radius Server vs ACS/Radius

Hi,
Is there any differences between Microsoft Radius Server and the Radius in ACS.
Thanks
Ali

I have used both with pretty good success. The one thing I do not like about ACS is the fact that a user can only belong to one group. The documentation for ACS is pretty good and configuring ACS is pretty simple. I was able to import my AP's from a file which was nice since I had around 100 to setup/install. That was really quick and simple.
The isn't a lot of documentation around for configuring IAS with Cisco Wireless equipment, but there are hints in these forums if you search. I had IAS configured to assign VLANS to certain wireless users (actually groups) and it works fine. There were a few bugs (differences between VxWorks and IOS) that have been corrected I believe. If you run into problems make sure your AP's software is up to date.
Aside from the fact that a user can belong to only one group, I like ACS. I haven't had much time to finish my configuration as far as Wireless goes, but so far things have been pretty simple to configure.
If you have any more questions feel free to ask...

  • Set-up Radius Server to ACS 4.2 and AD server

    Hi Guys,
I would like to ask help from you on how to set-up Radius server in ACS 4.2  (step-by-step guide or link), wireless client will be authenticated via Active Directory when connecting to our Wireless AP so it means that our Wireless AP is added as client to Radius server.
    Thanks in advance!

    Hi Colin
thanks for your answer, we had the this setting correct. I was able to solve the problem yesterday, we had some faults in the AD mapping.
I didn't know that when I select more AD groups for one ACS group in one step, that the user / host has to be in every of these AD groups (AND conjunction).
Now I only added one AD group for my ACS group and it works. The error message "AD user restriction" was not very helpful for finding this fault ;-)

  • Authenticated on ISE 1.2 (as admin) against an external radius server

    Hello
Our customer wants to be authenticated on ISE 1.2 (as admin) against an external radius server (like ACS not microsoft). How could i do that ?
Is it possible while retaining internal admin users database in a sequence "external_radius or internal"
    thank you in advance.
    Best regards

External authentication is supported only with internal authorization:
    External Authentication + Internal Authorization
When configuring Cisco ISE to provide administrator authentication using an external RSA SecurID identity store, administrator credential authentication is performed by the RSA identity store. However, authorization (policy application) is still done according to the Cisco ISE internal database. In addition, there are two important factors to remember that are different from External Authentication + External Authorization:
You do not need to specify any particular external administrator groups for the administrator.
You must configure the same username in both the external identity store and the local Cisco ISE database.
To create a new Cisco ISE administrator that authenticates via the external identity store, complete the following steps:
Step 1 Choose Administration > System > Admin Access > Administrators > Local Administrators.
The Administrators window appears, listing all existing locally defined administrators.
Step 2 Follow the guidelines at Creating a New Cisco ISE Administrator to ensure that the administrator username on the external RSA identity store is also present in Cisco ISE. Be sure to click the External option under Password.
Note Remember: you do not need to specify a password for this external administrator user ID, nor are you required to apply any specially configured external administrator group to the associated RBAC policy.
    Step 3 Click Save .

  • Exchange Server 2013 and RADIUS server(freeRADIUS2)

I am a student and doing an internship. I have to test Microsoft Exchange Server 2013.
I am using Windows Server 2012, I already installed Exchange
Server 2013 on it and everything works as intended.
But I couldn't find out how to configure my Windows Server 2012 in order to authenticate my mailbox users from Exchange Server 2013 with a RADIUS
server which is not on my Windows Server 2012. I have to use their RADIUS server ( freeRADIUS2 ), the RADIUS server from
the company where I am doing my internship.
I already did the checklist that is on http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/cc772591.aspx. I configured the NPS as
a RADIUS proxy, because that's what I need.
So after doing everything that is on that checklist, my question is:
Is it possible that the Exchange Server 2013 will use my NPS which is now configured as a NPS RADIUS proxy to authenticate my mailbox users that I have on my Exchange Server 2013?

thanks for such a quick response.
Just a small question about the link that you put. Does member server mean other server other than domain controller?
    Regards,
Yes, Also the server on which you are installing Exchange should have exchange installed.

  • Exchange Server 2013 with a RADIUS server (freeRADIUS).

    Hello,
I am a student and doing an internship. I have to test Microsoft Exchange Server 2013.
I am using Windows Server 2012, I already installed Exchange Server 2013 on it and everything works as intended.
But I couldn't find out how to configure my Windows Server 2012 in order to authenticate my mailbox users from Exchange Server 2013 with a RADIUS server which is not on my Windows Server 2012. I have to use their RADIUS server (freeRADIUS), the RADIUS server

I already created a NPS and added the RADIUS Client + Remote
RADIUS Server Groups. I created a Connection Request Policies with the condition:
    User Name *
I forwarded the Connection Request to the
Remote RADIUS server that I created in Remote RADIUS Server Groups and then I registered the NPS in th AD. But it's still not working.
Maybe I did something wrong or I misunderstood something or does this even work with Exchange Server 2013? To authenticate mailbox users with a RADIUS server before they can login into their mailbox and use their mailbox?
    Thanks in advance.

    Hi,
I suggest we refer to the following article to double confirm the Network Policy Server is registered properly.

  • Cisco ISE with both internal and External RADIUS Server

    Hi
I have ISE 1.2 , I configured it as management monitor and PSN and it work fine
I would like to know if I can integrate an external radius server and work with both internal and External RADIUS Server simultanously
So some computer (groupe_A in active directory ) will continu to made radius authentication on the ISE internal radius and other computer (groupe_B in active directory) will made radius authentication on an external radius server
I will like to know if it is possible to configure it and how I can do it ?
Thanks in advance for your help
    Regards
    Blaise

Cisco ISE can function both as a RADIUS server and as a RADIUS proxy server. When it acts as a proxy server, Cisco ISE receives authentication and accounting requests from the network access server (NAS) and forwards them to the external RADIUS server. Cisco ISE accepts the results of the requests and returns them to the NAS.
Cisco ISE can simultaneously act as a proxy server to multiple external RADIUS servers. You can use the external RADIUS servers that you configure here in RADIUS server sequences. The External RADIUS Server page lists all the external RADIUS servers that you have defined in Cisco ISE. You can use the filter option to search for specific RADIUS servers based on the name or description, or both. In both simple and rule-based authentication policies, you can use the RADIUS server sequences to proxy the requests to a RADIUS server.
The RADIUS server sequence strips the domain name from the RADIUS-Username attribute for RADIUS authentications. This domain stripping is not applicable for EAP authentications, which use the EAP-Identity attribute. The RADIUS proxy server obtains the username from the RADIUS-Username attribute and strips it from the character that you specify when you configure the RADIUS server sequence. For EAP authentications, the RADIUS proxy server obtains the username from the EAP-Identity attribute. EAP authentications that use the RADIUS server sequence will succeed only if the EAP-Identity and RADIUS-Username values are the same.

  • Dynamic IP allocation by Radius server

    Hi community,
Can Cisco Radius server allocation different IP pools for requests from difference source IP addresses but having the same username/ password information? We have multiple GGSNs using dynamic IP allocation by Radius server. In Radius server, we configure username is subscriber's MSISDN. So we face a situation that a subscriber can go through any GGSN but for different GGSN, Radius server return different IP pools, even for the same subscriber. Is it possible?
    Thanks and regards,
    Hieu

I'm not sure if the Autonomous APs have the option for AAA Override.  On the WLC, I can go into the BSSID, Security, Advanced, and there's a checkbox that I would check to allow a Radius server to send back the VLAN.
I did a little research and it looks like the 1300 may give this option but instead is defined as "VLAN Override".  I've found the release notes for 12.3(7)JA5 (not sure what version you're running) that give mention and a link to configuring EAP on page 4: http://www.ciscosystems.ch/en/US/docs/wireless/access_point/1300/release/notes/o37ja5rn.pdf
    Hope this helps

  • WLC cannot reach Radius server

I am currently configuring Radius server with Cisco Wireless Controller 5508.  Using debug aaa at the CLI, I can see the controller receive radius client message but nothing coming back from the radius server.
For some reason, Wireless Controller 5508 cannot ping the Radius server using CLI.  Yet, I can ping the 5508 controller from the Radius server.  The Radius server is running Windows 2008 NPS with firewall turned off.  There are no antivirus firewall installed on the Radius server.  NPS is installed and configured on Windows 2008.  Nothing shows up in the NPS log.
    Any idea?

if you put a PC onto WLC management subnet can you ping your NPS from that PC ?
Also are you using service port of your WLC ?

    Is there a solution?

I think you've not configured the WLC as a RADIUS client on the RADIUS server, or the RADIUS shared secret is incorrect.

  • WLC 5508 and Microsoft Radius Server 2008

Hi, I am trying to setup WLC 5508 for a customer who want to use MS NPS for Radius authentication, however there aren't many good documents showing how to configure the MS NPS.
    I have couple of questions:
1, Does WLC 5508 support MS NPS on Server 2008 R2?
2, Are there any good document showing how to configure this?
    Thanks

    Hadisharifi,
There is no single document that we can pick for configuring WLC and NPS. However, you may visit the below listed document for NPS  and WLC side configuration:

  • WPA2-Enterprise + EAP (PEAP) and 802.1x to authenticate to RADIUS server NPS

I need to connect my iPhone and my iPad to the corporate wireless network using WPA2-Enterprise and 802.1x to authenticate against a RADIUS server with my corporate user. What is the procedure to configure the clients? Certificates is not necessary on the client. Radius server is a NPS of Microsoft and the WLC is a 5508 of Cisco.
    thanks !!!

WPA and WPA2 are all actually interim protocols that are used until the standardization of IEEE 802.11i standard. Wi-fi appliance decided that ratification and standardization of 802.11i standards will take more time. So, they came up with WPA.
Now, WPA2 is advanced version of WPA. WPA2 uses AES as encryption algorithm. Whereas, WPA use TKIP as encryption mode which in turn uses RC4 encryption algorithm.
WPA and WPA2 are actually are of 2 types respectively.
WPA/WPA2-PSK - This is mainly for small offices. This uses Pre-Shared Key for authentication.
WPA/WPA2 -Enterprise - This uses a RADIUS Server for authentication. This is an extension to 802.1x authentication. But this uses stronger encryption scheme(WPA uses RC4 and WPA2 uses AES).
Any authentication mechanism that involves a separation authentication server for authentication like ACS server is called 802.1x authentication.
EAP stands for Extensible Authentication Protocol. It refers to the type or method of 802.1x Authentication by the RADIUS/Tacacs server. A RADIUS server can authenticate a wireless client with various EAP methods.
LEAP is one type of EAP. It uses username and password for authenticating wireless clients. LEAP is cisco proprietory.
There are also EAP types which uses other user credentials like Certificates, SIM etc for authentcation.

  • Windows 2k8 Radius Server with Cisco Wireless Controllers

We currently are using a Cisco 4400 wireless controller with an older Cisco Secure ACS appliance that is going EOL.  My hope was to just connect our 4400 Wireless Controller to a Windows Server 2008 Radius Server (Just using Microsoft's Network Policy Server) but have not had any luck in getting this to work.  Does anyone have an easy to follow set of instructions on configuration of Microsoft Windows Server 2008 NPS for use with Cisco Wireless Controllers?  Any advise would be greatly appreciated.

  • TACACS auth and RADIUS accounting with ACS

I am having RADIUS accounting issues with an ASA 5520 that uses TACACS for authentication. Both are hosted on the same ACS server. I can send RADIUS info to my Microsoft IAS box but get Syslog ID 113022 errors when trying to send to the ACS RADIUS. A packet capture shows the RADIUS accounting request getting to the ACS box (Windows Server 2003 R2) but syslog shows failedauth. Any ideas?

Thank you for the response. I did verify the syslog explanation you gave below and the AAA server is online as TACACS message are getting to it. My configuration for the ASA for RADIUS is as follows
    Server Group - RADIUS
    Protocol - RADIUS
    Accounting Mode - Simultaneous
    Reactivation Mode - Timed
    Max Failed attempts - 3
Two servers in the Server Group
    ACS - Not working
    Microsoft IAS - Working
I have tried removing the IAS server and changing the accounting mode to single and still getting auth failures.
    ACS is configured as follows
    Network Configuration
AAA Clients - ASA authenticate using TACACS+
AAA Servers - None listed. When I tried to add the ACS machine the error said the server already existed (In another Network Device Group)

  • Radius server for lab work

I am studying Routing & Switching, but I also need to have a general understanding of the security features: AAA authentication, dot1x etc. It is probably the weakest link in my chain of knowledge because I have never used those
    features.
I really need to play with the protocols in the lab to get a basic understanding of them. Is there some cut-down Radius server, preferably freeware running on a PC, that can be used for basic lab work? Can someone guide me through obtaining and installing it?
    Kevin Dorrell

    Hi Kevin
You should be able to get an eval license for Cisco's Secure ACS that you could use in the lab. It is free for download on the Cisco site.
It does run out after 3 months so it depends on how long you need it for.
The other option is to use the Microsoft Radius server (IAS) which comes with the W2K Advanced server. I haven't used it so i can't really comment other than that.
