Microsoft SQL 2005, Terminal Services and Tiger

We found a great application we need to use at work. Unfortunately, it runs only on Windows. We will need to run it on a Windows server, running SQL Server 2005, and Macs interacting with it using MS Terminal Server. At least that is what someone at Dell said. This ends up being a huge and complicated purchase for us.
All this is totally foreign to me. I set up our Mac network, using OSX Server 10.2, migrating up to 10.4. We have 16 computers on the network, and it runs reasonably well. I did not need months of training to set it up. There are many things I do not understand and features that I have zero idea about...but for email, web, ftp and application serving, it works well.
We have 13 Macs, 2 Windows boxes and one UNIX box on the network.
Has anyone used SQL 2005? Has anyone had to connect thru Terminal Services to a Windows Server?

Hi John!
Using Terminal Services on a Windows server is common in corporate environments and solves a lot of issues where Macs can't run Windows-only software.
Since the Windows server will be the only Windows machine on your network and you only need it for a specialized purpose, you can probably get by with purchasing Windows Small Business Server Premium, which comes with a SQL Server. You'll have to ask the vendor if this version will work with their product. See this link on Microsoft's website http://www.microsoft.com/windowsserver2003/sbs/default.mspx.
Many third party database applications will facilitate the setup of the datbase with the SQL server, but they won't support the SQL software and its security. I'd advise hiring a contractor to help with the installation and setting up a backup (preferably someone that can become familiar with your environment and provide ongoing support).
Hope this helps! bill

  • Dsml and SQL 2005 reporting services?

I usually post over in the IDM forum so be nice to the newbie here :)
I have a Sun Directory server that I've enabled DSML on. On that side everything is good. However, ideally I want to pull this data into a MS SQL 2005 reporting services report. They have support for XML and web services, but the DSML front end doesn't accept GET requests and I don't know how to send the request as post in reporting services.
Has anyone else be able to get something like this working?
    Thanks!

No idea about MS SQL, but is your reporting service able to use files on disk? If so I guess your problem is easily solved by using an app to fetch data from directory server to disk. If you're more adventerous, you write a script in perl/python which acts as a proxy and translates GET requests to POST and relays data back in real time. Not sure if these help or not, just my thoughts.

  • Microsoft SQL 2005 preload problem

    Hi Guys,
First post! I took receipt of my W520 a few weeks ago. It is great, very pleased with it on the whole.
There is one problem, however. I play a fair amount of recreational card games over the internet. This requires a program which converts the text file “hand histories” into postgreSQL server data to make it quickly readable and provide tracking for win/loss among a whole host of other statistical things.
Unfortunately after going through their troubleshooting numerous times, going through factory restore and repeating the process, I still cannot get my SQL server to automatically start. Believe me, I have tried everything. Running them all as admin, editing the startup in the windows “services” dialog etc etc. The server does start manually and the program works fine, but every time I start it I have to do it manually and it is irritating. It should just start up in the background but it doesn’t.
I believe it is the Microsoft SQL 2005 express that is somehow blocking the auto start. Basically, I want my Lenovo as it is, just without the preloaded SQL server. Using the factory restore just reloads it back on and when I manually uninstall the SQL server I still have the same problem. I believe it leaves a lot of little nuggets behind when you uninstall it through the standard W7 “uninstall a program” and the full uninstall looks a long and difficult process, with no guarantee of really removing everything.
So, the plan is to install a bare copy of W7 using a borrowed disk, install my own personal SQL program and test to see if that works. I am almost certain it will. From there, I plan to build back my programs on top so I essentially have my PC now, bar the bundled SQL 2005 express or whatever it is. Following this I will make a system image and store it away safely to avoid all this mess and only reinstall using the factory disks if absolutely necessary.
I have my W7 OEM serial, found using a serial grabber. Obviously I didn’t pay all this money to scrap all the useful thinkvantage tools like “airbag” and basic fingerprint/camera drivers etc. I also like the realtime warranty countdown timer. How should I go about this task? Is all I need is the PC serial underneath to reload thinkvantage at a later date with full functionality? Is there anything I should consider before starting?
If there is a better subforum to post this question in, please let me know.
    Many thanks,
    Nick

    What is service dependency?
Yes I tried to make a batch file. Not in startup folder, but one on the desktop that had the right path. This returned an error from the statistical program and not the SQL server. It initially looked hopeful as I had it start up the "start server" option for the right SQL server. This opened up the dos window and said it had correctly started. However, when the stats program launched it hung up on loadscreen and returned an error message. Not sure why this was, but it didn't seem to like being loaded through a .bat.
This seems like a work around more than a solution anyway. I just want to get it to work properly.
Here is the thread in the database analaysis program forum for your reference.

I'm new to SQL Server Integration Services and I need help on how to begin learning SSIS. Is there any training for it besides msdn?

Check this thread where people have already given their suggestion on learning SSIS
    http://social.msdn.microsoft.com/Forums/sqlserver/en-US/f2cc1cf3-204d-454a-a189-47df87a3aa23/i-want-to-learn-ssis?forum=sqlintegrationservices
I would suggest to go for You tube videos (type learn SSIS or begin SSIS step by step) you will get lot of good tutorials to start with.
    Happy Learning!!

  • The evaluation period of this instance of Microsoft sql server reporting services has expired

    Hi All,
When i am trying to open power view report in Event log getting below error:
"The evaluation period of this instance of Microsoft sql server reporting services has expired: but how can we know which server ssrs has been expired..
please help me on this ...
    Regards,
    Jithendar.

    Hi Jithendar,
For your issue, you can retrieve the SQL Server Evaluation Period Expiry Date to varify which server SSRS has been expired:
    SELECT
create_date AS 'SQL Server Install Date',
DATEADD(DD, 180, create_date) AS 'SQL Server Expiry Date'
    FROM sys.server_principals
    WHERE name = 'NT AUTHORITY\SYSTEM'

    Please try below mentioned steps:
    1. Central Administration > Monitoring > Review job definitions > Look for following timer job "Application Server Administration Service Timer Job" > Disable
    2. Then open windows administrative services (services.msc), stop SharePoint Timer Service
    3. Clear SharePoint Timer configuration cache by following steps mentioned in below blog:
    http://blogs.msdn.com/b/jamesway/archive/2011/05/23/sharepoint-2010-clearing-the-configuration-cache.aspx
    4. Start SharePoint Timer Service and give it a few seconds so that the new XML files from the location you deleted then are re-populated.
5.Central Administration > Monitoring > Review job definitions > Look for following timer job "Application Server Administration Service" Timer Job > Enable

  • Installation of Golf Program requires uninstalling Microsoft SQL 2005 and installing SQL 2000

I am running Win 7 and about to purchased a new computer with Win 8.1.
The USGA wrote a Tournament Program which is used nationwide called TPP (Tournament Pairing Program).  It was developed prior to XP but it is updated every time you run the update.  It runs on XP without any adjustments.  To load the program
on Win 7 or Win 8 you are instructed to remove Microsoft SQL Server 2005, which I did.  The program loads SQL 2000 when it is installed.  I am concerned when I uninstall the TPP program that it will also uninstall SQL 2000 (which it installed) and
then there will be no SQL server on my Win 7.
I was going to make sure that I could install the TPP program on Win 8 (before buying another computer) by installing it on a friends new Win 8.1 computer.  But I am concerned about removing the preinstalled SQL Server program.
    1) How does one get the original Microsoft SQL Server back once it has been removed and the recycle bin has been emptied?  Does the SQL program even get sent to the recycle bin when it is removed?
    2)  Is there any harm done by removing the original SQL program be it 2005 or a new one?

SQL 2000 is not supported on Windows 7.
    http://support.microsoft.com/kb/2028963/en-us
whenever you uninstall SQL Server, databases files are not deleted. So you can move them to safe location. if they are delete by you then you have very less chances to recover the data.

  • C# Code Example for Configuring SQL 2005 Reporting Services?

I have found the MSDN articles describing the classes, public methods, etc. for configuring SQL Server 2005 Reporting Services via WMI. I need to initially configure them and just do this:
    - Report Server Virtual Directory
    - Windows Service Identity
    - Web Service Identity
    - Database Setup
    - Email Settings
    - Execution Account
Is there a C# code example that already exists putting together all of this? I didn't want to reinvent the wheel if I didn't need to.
    -Ed

    Jin,
Thanks so much! This is great! Your work is awesome!
I have a couple of issues that came up...
    1) CreateVirtualDirectory.vbs creates the virtual directory for the Report Server just fine. Now how do I distinguish a script to create the virtual directory for the Report Manager?
    2) I decided to go ahead and use what you did for scripting CreateApplicationPool (using http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/ms155349(SQL.90).aspx). I found the syntax is wrong here when I kept getting an error, so I put PowerShell on the server and pulled the following info:
    Name       : CreateApplicationPool
    MemberType : Method
    Definition : System.Management.ManagementBaseObject CreateApplicationPool(System.String Name, System.Boolean UseBuiltIn
                 Account, System.String Account, System.String Password)
However, I'd like to use "NT Authority\NetworkService" or "Network Service" as the account (which is an option for the Builtin accounts when I us RSConfigTool.exe). This is the syntax I used:
    objInParam.Properties_.Item(
    "Name") = "ReportServer"
    objInParam.Properties_.Item("UseBuiltInAccount") = true
    objInParam.Properties_.Item("Account") = "NT Authority\NetworkService"
    objInParam.Properties_.Item("Password") = ""
But I always get an error with a negative number for the HRESULT.
    Any ideas?-Ed

  • Microsoft SQL Server JDBC driver and WLS JMS problem?

              Greetings,
I'm using the Microsoft SQL Server JDBC driver with WLS with JMS
persisted to SQL Server, during WLS startup the JMS attempts to
read the JMSStore and JMSState tables in the db, if they are
already present (say, from a previous run) the driver kicks out:
              java.sql.SQLException: [Microsoft][SQLServer 2000 Driver for JDBC]ResultSet can
not re-read row data for column 1.
If the tables are not present, then WLS creates them and
everything proceeds fine. Now, its not a good thing to attempt
to reread row data for a ResultSet, especially for portability. Why is WLS JMS
doing this? is there some config I can use to adjust JMS startup behavior for
              persisted JMS stores?

              Tom,
thanks for the info, I'll bring this to support.
I did try the weblogic jDriver for SQL Server and it works fine, so i think it
must be the way JMS is interacting with the MS driver.
              here are my components:
              WLS 6.1sp1
              Microsoft® SQL Server™ 2000 Driver for JDBC™ is a (Type 4 JDBC) which provides
partial JDBC 2 support (no blobs, clobs, etc)
              MS SQL Server 2000 (sp2?)
              thanks!

  • Microsoft SQL Server Reporting Services

    Dear All,
Since today, I am recieving these error.
    Any Idea?

    Hi,
According to your post, my understanding is that you got error
"For more information about this error, navigate to the report server on the local server machine, or enable remote errors".
You can set the EnableRemoteErrors property to access additional information that can help you troubleshoot the problem. For more information, see
    Enable Remote Errors (Reporting Services)
If still no help, for quick and accurate answers to your questions, it is recommended that you initial a new thread in SQL forum.

  • Microsoft SQL 2005 WebServices - SOAP Result Parsing

    Hello,
I have successfully connected to, sent a request and
retrieved a SOAP response from, the WebServices functionality
(ENDPOINT) using MS-SQL 2005. What I need to know how to do is
parse the SOAP response in FLEX as to access the actual data for
    use in the application.
How do I extract only the node that contains the data and
then use this for binding my controls? I don't need any of the SOAP
header stuff in there. Of course I could loop through the
xyz.lastResult and parse onyl the parts I need to a new XML object,
but that seems a lot of processing for something that is almost
    there.
    Any help would be appreciated.
    Sal

Can you share the code to do that with me? I'm not good a

    project. Thank you.

  • Back-up SQL 2005 with NTBACKUP and Volume Shadow Copy

    Hi everybody,
I want to make a snapshot backup of a SQL 2005 database with SAP ECC6.
I want to use NTBACKUP to make the snapshot.
Does the database freeze at the moment of the snapshot?
    Does anybody use this method?
    Thanks in advanche.
    Kind regards,
    Klaas van Deelen

NTbackup uses VSS to create the copy of FILES.
VSS is not designed to replace your current backup strategy,
VSS will copy a data file, then another, then another etc - heres the problem sapdata1 and sapdata2 will be backed up at DIFFERENT times. if you tried to restore the DB, it would NOT be consistent. If VSS backed up the files OFFLINE - np, it will work.
VSS cache is also on the system (default) as the original data - not really a smart idea for a backup solution.
Use either the SQL tools to backup online to tape/external storage or get the symantec backupexec with the SQL agent to allow for online backups again to tape or nearline storage.

  • Windows Terminal Services and Swing

My large swing application is being accessed remotely using Windows Terminal Services RDP protocol and is performing dreadfully in terms of screen updates. Is there an answer for this problem? Any suggestions?
    Regards
    David

In my opinion the real problem is not at all in your application.
    1) Window terminal services (RDP)
Each time that the screen changes is send to client all the screen.
This is also for mouse moving.
Using more efficent software, like Citrix that is based on RDP, are
send to client only the dirrefernces, and mouse moving is managed
    only by client side.
    This gives advantages in performances.
Window terminal Server, also, needed a strong Server to run, in my
experiences more than 10 connections my cause a performances
    problems in many cases.
    2) The network
Is needed an efficient network for ship quicly all data traffic generated
for that fat application, minimum 100 Mbit.
If the network is just congestionated for others think (internet browsing,
an lot of file exchange and so on) the performances of terminal server
is bad. (terminal server ships a lot of information across the network)
    3) Your application.
Control if too many repaint() or revalidate() are called.
For do that simply u can override that methods in this way in your costom components:
    public void repaint()
    super.repaint();
    System.out.println("Repainting of MyComponent");
    the same think for revlidate.
Now, lanching your application, u can control how many times for transaction those methods are invoked.
My doubt is that, every time that a repaint or a revalidate occurs,
Terminal Server reshape all the screen for client (not so sure about
    that)
I say u that because I have had a similar problem (flickering).
I have see that flickering was caused by serval repaint invocation
    by swing itself.
I had solved it simply do that
    public void repaint()
    if (!wBatchMode)
    super.repaint();
The variable wBatchMode is setted to true (for example in my custom
JTable) util I append columns and rows.
If u look for swing code for each column added, the repaint methid is
    invoked.
When i have finished to populate my component i set the wBatchMode
variable to false, so the repaint method occurs only one time and no
    flickering occurs.
So, if is true that Terminal Server for every revalidate/repaint reship
the screen, this method may be help u.

  • WINDOWS TERMINAL SERVICES AND ORACLE CLIENT 9,10.1,10.2 BUG

PROBLEM:NON-ADMINISTRATOR USER UNABLE TO USE CLIENT SQLPLUS INSTALL
FIX: NONE... REFER TO Bug No.     4684738
    Filed     18-OCT-2005     Updated     06-DEC-2005
    Product     SQL*Plus     Product Version      10.2.0.1
Platform     Microsoft Windows Server 2003     Platform Version
    HOW I FIXED:
copied instant client basic, instant SqlPlus, instant ODBC (i need ODBC connection)
    step1:
login to terminal server as administrator, unzip basic, SqlPlus, ODBC into a new directory on the server, make sure users have basic file rights read, view to new directory.
    step2:
copy a working copy of tnsnames.ora (the databases you want to connect to) into the directory where all your instant client files are.
    step3:
create SYSTEM ENVIRONMENT variables > click my computer, properties, advanced. create variable SQLPATH set value to path of your instant clent files. create variable TNS_ADMIN set value to path of your instant client files.
    step4:
edit the PATH statement listed in SYSTEM ENVIRONMENT variables and add the path to your instant client files at the beginning of the PATH statement.
    step5:
logout, login as administrator test instant sqlplus open command prompt enter > sqlplus username?/password?@mydatabase
you should get connected to your database. Repeat step5 only login as a normal user. the normal user should be able to connect to the database.
Issue: it appears instant ODBC not ready for prime time I get error 126, reading forums it appears there are files missing from the install package. The Microsoft ODBC connector for Oracle does work with my MSACCESS applications that connect to Oracle 10G using the afore mentioned process. I will continue to troubleshoot instant ODBC issue and post findings. Oracle has already wasted 12 hours of my time trying to get their junky software working might as well waste another day before throwing in the towel.

You can download the latest JDBC drivers from http://www.oracle.com/technology/software/tech/java/sqlj_jdbc/index.html
You just need to place the jar somewhere and add the location to your classpath.
