Microsoft teases Denim for Lumia Icon

http://lumiaconversations.microsoft.com/2014/12/18/lumia-denim-takes-imaging-whole-new-level/
Seeing as how the Icon is your exclusive, Verizon, would you please confirm or deny that we will in fact see it?

Yah pretty much all Windows Phone users are fed up with Verizon. The Denim update is rolling out to everyone, but we have yet to get Cyan which was released early Summer. If you head over to the Windows Central forums for the Icon phone pretty much everyone is changing carriers. If I dont have the Denim update by the time my plan is up (2 months) I'm leaving for ATT as well. I'm so sick of Verizon being the Iphone/Samsung store. Not a single salesperson in the store knows anything about windows phones. Plus they stop selling the Icon, the flagship windows phone, within a year?  Its Sammy or Iphone or nothing. Hell, they dont even push the Droid Turbo's which are their new phone. All I can think of is they are making way more money as a kick back from Apple and Samsung so thats what they push. I really hope Verizon gets on the ball, but I really think they are ridding themselves of Windows phones.

  • So are we to assume that the preview for developers is the WP 8.1 update intended for Lumia Icon users?  Why is it taking so long for this update to be released?!

Of those of you that have tried out the preview for developers on the Lumia Icon, what issues have you seen from it?  Does it in fact void your warranty?

I have largely given up on this device, I think that I made mistake trying out a Windows phone.  I really miss my Android device and feel like I have made a 2 year mistake.
I don't think you should give up on Windows Phone.  I think you should instead give up on Verizon.  Lets say you had an android device, Verizon could do the same thing and hold up an important update that you're waiting for.  AT&T is much quicker to release Windows Phone updates so you may want to try them next time. For example, you can see on this page Availability in North America - Nokia that AT&T has released the update for their top two phones the 1020 and 1520.  The Verizon icon is almost the same as the Lumia 930 which is the international version.  The 930 has been on Windows Phone 8.1 for many months.  Windows Phone 8.1 has lots of new features including the notification center and Cortana.  It's a shame that Verizon is too lazy, too slow or just doesn't care.  I'm probably going to start installing the developer preview soon and you could do the same.  Basically, you sign up for a free developer account.  Then install the developer preview app to get the updates. Google has no such option for android uses so if Verizon were holding back an android update you'd be worse off.  At least Microsoft gives us a stupid carrier work around...  It's annoying but then you can enjoy your Windows Phone with out having to wait for Verizon whom doesn't care.  They haven't even said a word about it which = worst carrier ever in my opinion.

  • Lumia denim for Lumia 525

I don't have a WiFi so I want to know the download size of denim update for Lumia 525 so that I can download it on mobile data

You cannot do an update over mobile data, you have to find wifi. Alternaitvely you can use the Software Recovery Tool via PC, but that will completely wipe your phone and make a clean install of the firmware, so you need to back up first.

  • Glance for Lumia Icon

Just bought a Lumia Icon on verizon.  Does anyone hsve an explanatin as to why they would not include the glance feature.  Windows OS needs every feature and advantage over droid and apple as it can get.  I personally feel the WP8 platform is superior but they will loose more ground if features consumers have come to appreciate are removed from the phones.  The icon is supposed to be a flagship phone.  You've got to be kidding, right?

Unsurprisingly this has been already raised and discussed here over a week ago. You need to complain to Verizon.

  • Denim for Lumia 635

Is it true the Denim update is being released?

http://www.microsoft.com/en-us/mobile/support/faq/?action=singleTopic&topic=FA142987 The above link is to the Windows Phone Recovery Tool. This is what Nokia told me to use to update the phone to Denim. I have not tried it due to not being able to get a good answer on how it will update the phone. Will it update to the latest version released by Micorsoft or by AT&T. Seems to be some confusion on just what AT&T intends to do about updating the Lumia 635 but everything I have read is they will have to update the phone it they intend to upgrade to Windows 10, which is what I am waiting for to see if I like using a Windows phone over Android.

  • Nokia Lumia Icon + DT900 wireless charging problem

I bought a Nokia Lumia Icon which had a defected SIM card tray. I replaced the daughter engine board where the SIM card tray is located without charging the phone first (the battery was completely empty) and now when I'm trying to charge the phone wirelessly with DT900, it just doesn't work. So I don't know whether it worked (or not) before my fixing procedure.
DT900 works with my wife's Lumia 1020 and my Lumia 928 so there's nothing wrong with it.
So all you technical gurus over here:
    1) how does the wireless charging work with Lumia Icon/930? I.e. does anyone have any wiring diagrams for Lumia Icon/930? There are two pins on the main board but where do they go? I didn't detach the main board, only the engine cover assembly and the battery in order to replace the daughter engine board where the SIM card tray is. So does the engine cover assembly have anything to do with the wireless charging (I don't think so) or do those pins go straight to the battery?
    2) does anyone know whether this is a common problem among Lumia Icon / 930 phones? A type fault or a serie of phones with defective rear cover and its wireless charging assembly?
I'd really appreciate if someone could help me. Thanks a lot in advance!

  • Verizon Lumia Icon Denim update teased for possible February release

    Fingers crossed
Verizon Lumia Icon owners are a passionate crowd and seemingly asking on a daily basis when the promised Lumia Denim update for their phones will be delivered. In late 2014 it was promised for "early 2015" but now we're into 2015 folks are getting itchy update fingers once again. Microsoft's Joe Belfiore is the target of a number of questions on the subject, and he's got a couple of things to say about it today.
"Lumia icon people asking what I meant by "early 2015": The first part of the year. In my mind that means jan/feb or so. Less likely March."
"Know that Vzw & MS are actively, daily working on getting it done. The test process has unpredictability so we can't say a firm end date"
Since January is done with that would suggest Microsoft and Verizon are aiming to push it out in February. But as with the second statement, it could easily slip due to circumstances beyond Microsoft's control. But it hasn't been forgotten about, at least.
Source:  Verizon Lumia Icon Denim update teased for possible February release | Windows Central

I doubt it. JB's tweets were very, very vague and the very fact that he had to mention March means it's a lot more likely than not to be pushed past February.
I take this as a very bad sign for this phone. We've been hearing soon since September.

  • When will the Lumia Icon get the Denim Update?

The Denim Update will arrive for the Lumia Icon in early 2015. It just dropped today for Lumia 928 and Lumia 822: Verizon announces Windows Phone 8.1 Update 1 to Lumia 928, Lumia 822 | Windows Central.
But, Microsoft said at IFA 2014 that the Lumia Denim would "first be available on our flagship phones...Lumia ICON": Microsoft Nokia Lumia Live Event Part 1 - Lumia Denim, Lumia 830 IFA 2014 - YouTube . Not happy. Check the youtube video out at the time 7:48.
So it appears that Lumia Cyan was skipped as some of us speculated in the forums.
Meanwhile, although you can only buy the Lumia 928 at Verizon, since Verizon discontinued (yanked off the shelves with disgust by iPhone and Android executives hehehe, jk) the Lumia ICON, you can still buy the Lumia ICON at the Microsoft store free with contract: http://www.microsoftstore.com/store/msusa/en_US/pdp/Verizon---Nokia-Lumia-Icon/productID.306508100
And just to add a little salt to the wounds the 930 on AT&T already has Lumia Cyan and it has the same exact hardware as the 929, accept for a few little number changes here and there due to GSM vs CDMA, but that doesn't take 4 months to figure out...: Windows Phone 8.1 Update 1 rolls out for Nokia Lumia 930
At this point Verizon should just let Microsoft deliver firmware directly to Lumia ICON users, like Apple delivers firmware updates to iPhone users, without carrier approval since Verizon doesn't even sell the ICON anymore.
Very disappointed in Verizon and Microsoft.
I wonder if the preview for developers version will receive the Denim update on the ICON any sooner than "early 2015"...
Joe Belfore needs to "get on Deck" with reality; this is way to long to wait for a flagship phone.

OK, I stand corrected -- and I'm thrilled about that!! According to Lumia Conversations, Verizon will be rolling out Denim to those that missed Cyan:
"Here’s an early Christmas present to our U.S. readers: If you own a Lumia and you’re on the Verizon network, the newest Windows Phone 8.1 upgrade–the super-charged Lumia Denim–is coming to you soon.
Yes, that means you’ll skip over the previous update, Lumia Cyan, and go straight to Denim!
The roll-out for the Lumia 822 and Lumia 928 begins over the next few days and the Lumia Icon will follow in early 2015."
I'm not thrilled about us Icon owners being last in line and waiting until 2015, but it's better than waiting for a Cyan update that will never come.

  • Another request for Lumia 830 Denim update information

I have the AT&T variant of the Lumia 830 and am waiting for a firmware update to fix two issues. However, there has been no communication as to when this firmware update will be released. I have only a short window to return this device and if I do not know when the firmware will be released, I would prefer to return it now and buy something else rather than waiting for several months. Let me be clear. I'm looking for specific availability dates and not a vague assurance that it's coming "soon" and that I should keep checking to see if it's out. If this information is not available now to Customer Support, please make the effort to reach out to the responsible team that does have this information. Even a date range specified in terms of days, months, or weeks would be helpful, along with any details that can help us understand why there is a delay. Of course, even better than knowing the release date would be having the firmware update pushed to my phone today. So that you can understand why I am eager to get this update, I've provided additional information below. I realize that this issue has been raised in other threads, but I'm adding as much detail as possible here so that I can refer to this post from support calls and any attempts to escalate my issue.   My Lumia 830's details Settings > About > More InfoOS Version: 8.1.14176.243Firmware version: 02040.00012.14404.07019Settings > Extras+InfoSoftware release: Lumia DenimManufacturer name: RM-983_1001 (AT&T variant) If you compare the AT&T variant to all other variants of this device in North America, you will note that the AT&T variant IS NOT RUNNING THE CURRENT VERSION of firmware found on all the other North American Lumia 830 variants (as of 6/29/ 2015): Canada    Lumia 830Country variantDenim8.10.14234.37502040.00021.15063.02001Lumia 830Bell MobilityDenim8.10.14234.37502040.00021.15063.02001Lumia 830RogersDenim8.10.14234.37502040.00021.15063.02001Lumia 830TelusDenim8.10.14234.37502040.00021.15063.02001United States    Lumia 830Country variantDenim8.10.14234.37502040.00021.15063.02001Lumia 830AT&TNot available yetNot available yetNot available yet  Specific Problems with the Current Firmware There are at least two specific problems with the outdated firmware available on the AT&T variant. First, the Lumia Camera application does not work and second, the Netflix app will not play videos. Lumia Camera app does not work Lumia Camera is an alternate camera app from Microsoft for recent Lumia phones that provides additional features that are unique to Lumia devices. However, when you start Lumia Camera (version 2015.507.1236.978, last updated 5/13/2015), it displays an error message: UPDATE YOUR PHONE.Lumia Camera requires the Lumia Denim software update. Your phone automatically notifies you when it's available or you can check now by going to App list > Settings > Phone Update. As noted previously, the phone reports that it is running Lumia Denim under Extras+Info, but this appears to be an early, incomplete version of this firmware. Netflix will not play videos When attempting to play ANY video in the Netflix app (version 4.1.0.16, last updated 3/2/2015), you receive the following error: Whoops, something went wrong…System Configuration ErrorThere is a problem with this system's configuration that prevents Windows from playing protected video. Please make sure you have the latest Windows Updates as well as Windows 8 certified video and audio drivers installed.Error code: Q8156-887A0004 Netflix provides additional information at https://help.netflix.com/en/node/23729 which suggest trying a soft reset and ends by noting that "Microsoft will soon be sending out an update that should resolve this error." Netflix could work around the issue, but if a firmware update is expected to address it, then it's no really reasonable to expect them to do so for one model on a single carrier. Firmware fix required A number of credible sources indicate that a firmware update is needed to fix these issues. For example, a Microsoft Support Engineer noted on the Microsoft forum site that: Lumia 830 shipped with Denim already from the factory (and many of the "Denim" features, like Live Folders, were already included) - but in order to use the new Lumia Camera version, this slighly smaller software update is needed.   It looks like this issue has been known and the fix has been available on some European variants since at least February, see The UK Lumia 830 gets Lumia Camera 5 and.... a working Netflix!. Paul Thurrott also notes that "the version of Denim that shipped with the Lumia 830 was not the final version" and that that the firmware update is needed for Lumia Camera in Lumia 830 + Denim: What You Get, What You Don’t. There are also many other threads about this in the AT&T support forums such as:Full Denim release for Lumia 830?Lumia 830 Denim Firmware UpdateLumia 830 Firmware updateand (amusingly):Lumia 830 Firmware update hostage crisis continued - day 184 We live in a world where continuous delivery has become standard in software engineering and it is extremely disappointing to see that timely releases of software to maintain our devices is such a low priority for AT&T. With customers holding onto devices for only two years, it's unacceptable to leave a phone partially functional for six months or more. I have gone to some lengths to document this issue and I expect at least a similar level of effort from AT&T to try to help me and all the Lumia 830 owners experiencing these problems. Thanks in advance, Mike

Thanks for replying. While I was half-hoping that my lengthy plea might have been the straw that broke the camel's back, I can't say I honestly expected AT&T to change their policy and suddenly start delivering more timely releases of firmware updates with greater transparency about the process. As for me, I only had a small window of time to return the handset to AT&T. Having heard nothing, I figured that the safest course of action was to buy a carrier-unlocked RM-985 from a reputable retailer. After it shows up tomorrow, I'll still have time to return the AT&T variant. With Windows Phone 10 arriving shortly, this should ensure that I get that upgrade at least a month or two before users with the AT&T branded device. I'll also be able to lower the monthly bill, so that's a big side benefit. It's unfortunate that this is how AT&T operates. I imagine that they get more than a few returns of the device from people who couldn't get Netflix working and this has to be costing them some money.  It certainly makes Windows Phone/Microsoft look bad as well, although they did ship the device with buggy firmware in the first place, even if they did provide a fix.  Supposedly with Windows 10, Microsoft will no longer be allowing carriers to block phone updates, so the situation should improve. M

Lumia Denim performacnce is not good as Cyan. I have lumia 925 and it is heating more after upgrade.
    What OS giant??
I reset the phone but still it is worst.
    It heats like a hell.
Lumia is like wired phone. very poor battery performance.
So many Apps are  not able to start.
I was happy with Cyan. Denim is not so great as expected.

  • Very frustrated that Verizon has not release Windows 8.1 for the Lumia Icon.  When will it be released?  Early 2015 is not an acceptable answer.

As I'm certain many others who bought this phone are, I am increasingly irritated that Verizon has not released the Windows 8.1 update.
When will it be release?  Early 2015 is not an acceptable answer.

"Early 2015" is the best answer you are going to get. I suggest that it is less stressful to accept what is rather than reject it. Taking the stance of "not acceptable" for something like this does nothing but disturb your peace of mind.
Really though, to me it is very good news in the sense that we now know we WILL eventually be getting 8.1, Cyan, and Denim. Verizon has made no official statement at all about this. Now we have Joe Belfiore specifically telling us MS is working with Verizon to get the update out and it will come for the ICON. Not as informative as we would like, but much better than what we had before!

  • Lumia Icon double tap to wake

we recently after a long, long, long time waiting finally got the 8.1.1/Denim update for the Icon on Verizon and the only thing that seems to be missing is the the double tap to wake feature.  Os version 8.10.14219.341 and firmware revision version 02540.00019.15024.38022.
Is there a diffference in hardware between the 930 and the Icon that explains why double tap to wake is not available?  Do we need an update to the Touch app?  Do we need a firmware update to enable double tap to wake?  Or is it because of some other reason?
    thanks for any info

The Double tap to wake feature is currently not supported by the Lumia Icon. If you're all wondering if this will be supported in the future, we cannot confirm at this moment. It is best to regularly check our websites for official announcements: Microsoft Global and Lumia Conversations.
BTW, here's an article with the list of supported features for each phone's model: FAQ - Which features does my Lumia phone support? Regardless of your location, you can use this as your reference. Hope you'll find this helpful.

  • Nokia Lumia Icon/929 Available

It looks like the phone is now available on VZW site, http://www.verizonwireless.com/b2c/device/smartphone/nokia-lumia-icon?&&ziprdr=y
The only issue right now is that it seems still be somewhat of a place holder being the phone is still listed as $777 on contract.
Personally once the phone is available I'm heading to my local Microsoft Store.  With insurance (I believe is $50) you'll get the phone replaced with a brand new one instead refurbished ones that VZW dishes out.

This whole 929/Icon release is a sad and pathetic situation.  Is VZW really that worried about a good Windows Phone taking over their Droid and iPhone market share?  "Verizon is dedicated to the Windows Phone Platform" has proven to be more lip service than anything else since the release of Windows Phone 8.  That "dedication" is why you see the Nokia 1020 and 1520 at AT&T.
In response to fireball24; I also believe that the Microsoft Store offers a better deal on hardware than Verizon.  The insurance is reasonable, you get 2 swaps, and a replacement phone is a brand new phone and not a refurbished that someone has been coughing and sneezing on.  Plus, after you get your new phone from Microsoft, you can cash in your old phone at Verizon and use the money to recover a bit of what you spent.  Plus, plus: if your current phone becomes obsolete (like the 822), Microsoft will provide you a replacement of something new.  (The same works at the Microsoft Store for the Xbox and Surface.)  The monthly bill from Verizon is enough of a shake-down.  No need to give VZW extra cash.  I made the same move this Summer with the kids iPhones.  Get it from Apple and insure it with Apple.  Everything has to be a "game" with VZW.  What's in it for them.
...anyway, I have my place in line at the International Mall in Tampa for the ICON at the Microsoft Store.  Verizon releases all of their phones on Thursday, so I expect an announcement by either tomorrow or in 8 days.  Or maybe June.  Or maybe next Christmas.  It's become quite a joke.
