MIcrosoft User Data. What is it? And is it taking up Room?

I got Office 2004, and I noticed this folder in finder titled
Microsoft user data. Do I need it?
Thanks everyone.

Well, I wish I had read these threads before I decided to clean out my HD and delete my folder of Microsoft User Data. I don't really use Microsoft applications, so I figured I didn't need it.
But I do use applications called EndNote (9.0), and FileMaker Pro 8.0 Advanced. After cleaning out my documents folders, including that pesky "microsoft user data" both of those applications will no longer launch.
I don't know what to do.
Actually, I still had Word 2004 installed. Tried to launch that and it worked just fine.
HELP!!

    Hi SDP1,
Do you use Outlook or Entourage? If so, that's where all of your emails are stored. If you don't use either of those applications I'd go digging through the folders and see where all the space is tied up. Check the Identifies folders, that's probably where everything is located.

  • Deleted my "microsoft user data" and emptied trash! how to recover!!

I deleted my "microsoft user data" which contains everything to do with my entourage and then emptied the trash (not secure though). I know what was I thinking....I am running filesalvage. What do i do next in order to recover everything?? thanks!

First, you need to understand that it's highly unlikely the recovered data will be intact. The longer it's been since you deleted it and the more you've used the computer during that time, the less likely it is that you'll be able to recover 100% of the data.
This is because it's likely that the computer has written new data over the same sections of the hard drive that the old data used to occupy. This means that you may recover the folder only to find that Entourage tells you the database is "corrupt" or "unreadable" or something similar.
(Also - I encourage you to switch to Apple Mail and IMAP accounts for your email. Using IMAP, everything stays stored on your server so that you never lose your email, no matter what happens to your computer. For more information, google IMAP and read about it.)
Having said that, you'll find instructions for how to use FileSalvage at this website, roughly 2/3rds of the way down:

  • Deleted Microsoft User Data, now FileMaker Pro, EndNote Won't Launch...

Yesterday I was trying to clean off my HD, and I was basically cleaning stuff out of Documents, Music, and Pictures. When I came across the "Microsoft User Data" I figured I don't really use microsoft apps, (have them installed but don't use them), I deleted that folder.
Now Word (2004) runs fine. But FileMaker Pro 8.0 Advanced, and EndNote 9.0 won't launch at all. Neither one gives any error message. They both bounce in the dock a couple of times and then just stop. I actually reinstalled EndNote 9.0 (an upgrade install), and it still doesn't lauch.
Can I get those files back? If it's not the Microsoft User Data, then what is the problem? If re-installing doesn't fix the problem then what can I do?
The only other thing I can think of was that I installed the security updates last night and iTunes 7.2. I can't figure how that could have done it but you never know.
FileMaker is key to my research (grad student in archaeology), and I'm crippled without it.
    PLEASE HELP!!

    What exactly is that data?
AFAIK, it contains the registration data for your copy of MS components. You'll get a better answer at the MS newsgroups: http://www.microsoft.com/mac/community/community.aspx?pid=newsgroups
Is there any way to repair the link or lost files?
Not unless you have a backup or want to expend bucks with something like Data Rescue.
Would a copy of the old User Data be found in any of my other accounts on the computer?
Not likely. It's probably user specific.
If I logged in to another user account on my computer and went and copied the MS User Data folder, and then replaced it in my main account would that have any effect?
Once again, visit the newsgroups. That's where you'll get better answers.

  • How to transfer microsoft user data to computer

I went into best buy and they backed up all my info on a disc and i put the disc in and i have retrieved some of my stuff but cant figure out how to get the "microsoft user data" back on my computer which is all microsoft word power point, office etc how do i do this?

  • Backing up live Microsoft User Data OK?

    Hello All,
I am planning on integrating Home folders and syncing everyone's Documents directory say ever couple hours or so. Is it safe to synchronize the Microsoft User Data directory when the user is using Entourage? Has anyone had any issues with this or seen Entourage databases going corrupt from this?
    Thank you very much!

Say the launchd job runs at 8pm every night that is if the computer is not already shutdown or asleep? Then the client will never get a backup. Also how would the client know not to start Entourage in the middle of a backup on mobile machines if they are working late from home..etc.? I could have an xcode window show progress, however, most clients would ignore reading this and probably just launch Entourage anyway, especially if they have hidden the progress window.
IMHO...I think it would be better for them to manage their own Entourage backups, this way it is on them, and as it stands right now we are not currently backing them up, so anything would be better at this point.

  • Deleted Microsoft User Data for Entourage- please HELP!!

I believe I deleted my Microsoft User Data for Entourage. Is there a way for me to get it back? I thought I backed it all up to my MYBOOK, external hard drive, but apparently It only accepted some of the items in the folder! (and not the User Data one!)
Any way to reverse this or find it after the trash was emptied??
It has ALL of my emails, contacts, saved emails, etc
    PLEASE HELP
    I will be forever grateful!

    Basics of File Recovery
If you simply put files in the Trash you can restore them by opening the Trash (left-click on the Trash icon) and drag the files from the Trash to your Desktop or other desired location. OS X also provides a short-cut to undo the last item moved to the Trash -press COMMAND-Z.
If you empty the Trash the files are gone. Recovery is possible but you must not allow any additional writes to the hard drive - shut it down. When you delete files you erase only the directory entries, not the files themselves. However, the space occupied by the files has been returned to the system as available for storage. Writing to the drive will then eventually overwrite the space once occupied by the deleted files in which case the files are lost permanently. Also if you save a file over an existing file of the same name, then the old file is overwritten and cannot be recovered.
If you stop using the drive it's possible to recover deleted files that have not been overwritten with recovery software such as Data Rescue II, File Salvage or TechTool Pro. Each of the preceding come on bootable CDs to enable usage without risk of writing more data to the hard drive.
The longer the hard drive remains in use and data are written to it, the greater the risk your deleted files will be overwritten.

  • Microsoft user data recovery

I have accidently delete the microsoft user data folder and empty the trash bin, so I lost the import microsoft outlook email.
how can I recover this folder? thanks.

Unless you have a backup, from Time Machine or some other backup, then you probably cannot recover that folder. To have any hope of recovering your tracks, though, you need to immediately stop using your system and then go out and get a copy of a recovery tool such as Tech Tool Pro (Micromat) , Data Rescue (Prosoft Engineering), or File Salvage (SubRosaSoft). The chances generally aren't really good even so, particularly with Mac OS X which reuses space much differently than did earlier versions of Mac OS, but short of sending your drive to a data recovery service (expensive and by no means guaranteed), such utilities are your only hope.
Note that the more you use your system before you attempt recovery, the more likely it is that the system will overwrite the sections of the drive where the data you want to recover is stored, rendering it unrecoverable by any means. You should therefore stop using the system completely until you get and try to use one of the file recovery tools.
    Good luck.

  • When I try to sync my ipod it shows that i have 2 gigs of other stuff. I dont know what it is and it is taking up space. how do I get it off?

When I try to sync my ipod it shows that I have 2 gig of "other" stuff and I don't know what it is and it is taking up space. How do I get it off?

You need to restore you iPod to gedure the "other" to its normal of less than 0.5 GB.  A restore from backup works if the large other is not in the backup.  Make sure that you turn off outo syncing (iTunes>Preferences>Device and check the box that says Prevent iPOds....syncing.  Otherwise, the backup will contain the other.

  • Thumb32Segment.data, what is it, and why are they in my iphoto?`

How are these thumbs getting into my iphoto library in finder?
They look like documents, and it doesn't appear to be from my camera...what are thumbs anyways? Thank everyone.

No, you can't preview them. They are not User documents. The are used by the Application itself. The actual thumbnails themselves are in the Data folder. These files are part of the back ground database that runs iPhoto.
Just to caution you: It is strongly advised that you do not move, change or in anyway alter things in the iPhoto Library Folder as this can cause the application to fail and even lead to data loss

  • Ipod touch erased all user data. Music, Apps, and Pics

Might have a good one for you guys...I work at a local electronics store and a customer came in with an Ipod touch that they claimed to have a "virus".  I am aware that Apple products are not prone to viruses (I've never witnessed one before) however I went along with it to hear what the issue was.  When using the Ipod Touch, after turning the screen off for a little while, the ipod restarted but there was absolutly no content on the device. Music was wiped, pictures were wiped, and apps icons will still present, but when selected they did nothing.  I recommended doing the recovery option by connecting the Ipod to the origional computer it was first synced with, but they tried that and the computer does not register the device.  The customer said they contacted the retailor because they purchased an exteneded warranty through them, but it doesn't cover software issues apparently.  They contacted Apple support and Apple said their 1yr warranty does not cover software issues, but for $200 they can push an antivirus to the device (I was present during the phone call, which was on speaker phone).  The customer is fairly upset about the situation, and rightfully so.  I just took it on as a side project just to help them out as they have done a lot of local business with us and I'd like to help them out if I can.
This is where you guys come in.  Not knowing exactly what was done to the Ipod doesn't give me a starting point for any tips or tricks that may exist, but I'd like to just run it over with you guys to be sure I'm not going on a while goose chase. Any help or recommendations would be welcome!
    Thanks again guys!

    You stated:

That does not make sense. The warranty covers defects in hardware and software.

  • What is Documents and Data on my iPhone 4 and how do I delete it?

When I plug my iPhone 4 into my Mac is tells me that Documents and Data is taking up 2.63GB of storage. I have no idea what this is and it is taking up more storage than any of my other tabs (Music, Apps, Photos etc.) I would like to clear this storage to make room for photos and music. I would also like to know where this is coming from.

  • Can Adobe Acrobat and/or Formscentral be used to individually collect and save user data? Can user data be used to populate other forms?

I want to collect individual user data through my site and then use that data to subsequently populate PDF forms. Can Formscentral or Acrobat Pro do this?

There's not a built-in feature in either for this. With both FormsCentral and Acrobat, you have access to the form data, which can be used to populate a different form using Acrobat, but this is a workflow that you would have to customize and would involve some manual steps.

  • Migrating Users & Data from a Powerbook G4 to a MBP

OK, I'm getting a refurb. MBP and I'm going to need to transfer over my stuff from the Powerbook G4 to the MBP. The thing is...both my 400 and 800 FW ports in the Powerbook have ceased to function, so Target Disk Mode will not work for me. I could use the Ethernet form of transfer to get everything over but that implies that the MBP will have to be up and running and have it's network settings all configured in order for it to be "seen" on the network. Is this the case? Or, upon startup of the MacBoook Pro, will I be prompted to migrate data & users via Ethernet?
In the past, I've been able to use Target Disk Mode and I'm familiar with that procedure, I just don't know what to expect via an Ethernet migration. Can anyone enlighten me?
    Thanks

A Basic Guide for Migrating to Intel-Macs
If you are migrating a PowerPC system (G3, G4, or G5) to an Intel-Mac be careful what you migrate. Keep in mind that some items that may get transferred will not work on Intel machines and may end up causing your computer's operating system to malfunction.
Rosetta supports "software that runs on the PowerPC G3, G4, or G5 processor that are built for Mac OS X". This excludes the items that are not universal binaries or simply will not work in Rosetta:
Classic Environment, and subsequently any Mac OS 9 or earlier applications
    Screensavers written for the PowerPC
    System Preference add-ons
    All Unsanity Haxies
    Browser and other plug-ins
    Contextual Menu Items
Applications which specifically require the PowerPC G5
    Kernel extensions
Java applications with JNI (PowerPC) libraries
See also What Can Be Translated by Rosetta.
In addition to the above you could also have problems with migrated cache files and/or cache files containing code that is incompatible.
If you migrate a user folder that contains any of these items, you may find that your Intel-Mac is malfunctioning. It would be wise to take care when migrating your systems from a PowerPC platform to an Intel-Mac platform to assure that you do not migrate these incompatible items.
If you have problems with applications not working, then completely uninstall said application and reinstall it from scratch. Take great care with Java applications and Java-based Peer-to-Peer applications. Many Java apps will not work on Intel-Macs as they are currently compiled. As of this time Limewire, Cabos, and Acquisition are available as universal binaries. Do not install browser plug-ins such as Flash or Shockwave from downloaded installers unless they are universal binaries. The version of OS X installed on your Intel-Mac comes with special compatible versions of Flash and Shockwave plug-ins for use with your browser.
The same problem will exist for any hardware drivers such as mouse software unless the drivers have been compiled as universal binaries. For third-party mice the current choices are USB Overdrive or SteerMouse. Contact the developer or manufacturer of your third-party mouse software to find out when a universal binary version will be available.
Also be careful with some backup utilities and third-party disk repair utilities. Disk Warrior 4.1, TechTool Pro 4.6.1, SuperDuper 2.5, and Drive Genius 2.0.2 work properly on Intel-Macs with Leopard. The same caution may apply to the many "maintenance" utilities that have not yet been converted to universal binaries. Leopard Cache Cleaner, Onyx, TinkerTool System, and Cocktail are now compatible with Leopard.
Before migrating or installing software on your Intel-Mac check MacFixit's Rosetta Compatibility Index.

Transferring data with Setup Assistant - Migration Assistant FAQ
Because Migration Assistant isn't the ideal way to migrate from PowerPC to Intel Macs, using Target Disk Mode, copying the critical contents to CD and DVD, an external hard drive, or networking
will work better when moving from PowerPC to Intel Macs. The initial section below discusses Target Disk Mode. It is then followed by a section which discusses networking with Macs that lack Firewire.
If both computers support the use of Firewire then you can use the following instructions:
    1. Repair the hard drive and permissions using Disk Utility.
    2. Backup your data. This is vitally important in case you make a mistake or there's some other problem.
    3. Connect a Firewire cable between your old Mac and your new Intel Mac.
    4. Startup your old Mac in Target Disk Mode.
    5. Startup your new Mac for the first time, go through the setup and registration screens, but do NOT migrate data over. Get to your desktop on the new Mac without migrating any new data over.
If you are not able to use a Firewire connection (for example you have a Late 2008 MacBook that only supports USB:)
    1. Set up a local home network: Creating a small Ethernet Network.
    2. If you have a MacBook Air or Late 2008 MacBook see the following:

Copy the following items from your old Mac to the new Mac:

    In your /Home/Library/ folder:
/Home/Library/Application Support/AddressBook (copy the whole folder)
/Home/Library/Application Support/iCal (copy the whole folder)
Also in /Home/Library/Application Support (copy whatever else you need including folders for any third-party applications)
    /Home/Library/Keychains (copy the whole folder)
    /Home/Library/Mail (copy the whole folder)
    /Home/Library/Preferences/ (copy the whole folder)
/Home /Library/Calendars (copy the whole folder)
/Home /Library/iTunes (copy the whole folder)
/Home /Library/Safari (copy the whole folder)
    If you want cookies:
    /Home/Library/Cookies/Cookies.plist
    /Home/Library/Application Support/WebFoundation/HTTPCookies.plist
    For Entourage users:
Entourage is in /Home/Documents/Microsoft User Data
    Also in /Home/Library/Preferences/Microsoft

If you need to transfer data for other applications please ask the vendor or ask in the Discussions where specific applications store their data.
    5. Once you have transferred what you need restart the new Mac and test to make sure the contents are there for each of the applications.
