Microsoft VDI Infrastructure Hardware Calculator

Does anyone come across Hardware Sizing for Microsoft VDI Infrastructure on windows 2012 Server.
We are looking at 250 Virtual Desktop with combination of Pooled and Personal Virtual Desktop
And 750 as Application Virtualization. Which will also include System Center.
If anyone have come across Hardware Sizing calculator or if anyone knows how to size the hardware.
Awaiting for response.
Thanks & Regards,

Actually this does not solve my query, unlike Citrix has such a calculation doesnt Mircosoft have calculation or calculator?
Storage
Capacity is determined by the number of images, the number of desktops, and the type of desktops.
Formula:
Golden image: 2 * total golden image size
VDI-in-a-Box appliance: 75 GB (can be reduced)
Per pooled desk"font-family:Verdana, Arial, 'Sans Serif' !important;margin-margin-bottom:10px !important;font-size:9pt !important;">Assumptions for pooled desktops: User and profile data are stored externally for pooled desktops. Desktops are refreshed frequently
(at least weekly or bi-weekly). If that is not the case in your deployment, or if you have applications that require more write space, allocate more than 15% per pooled desktop.
Per personal desk"vdi-sizing__li_3F4E509727EF4A30802173732E1053D6" style="margin-margin-bottom:5px;font-size:9pt !important;">Swap space: VM RAM size * number of VMs
Thin clone expansion buffer: 10% * golden image size * number of desktops
Example:
50 pooled desktops
40 pooled desktops + 10 personal desktops (80/20 split)
Golden image
2 * 20 GB * 2 = 80 GB
VDI-in-a-Box appliance
75 GB
Image space per desktop
15% * 20 GB * 50 = 150 GB
Pooled: 15% * 20 GB * 40 = 120 GB
Personal: 8 GB * 10 = 80 GB
Swap space
2 GB * 50 = 100 GB
Thin clone expansion buffer
10% * 20 GB * 50 = 100 GB
Recommended per-server storage
Total: 505 GB
Recommended: 750 GB to about 1 TB
Total: 555 GB
Recommended: 850 GB to about 1 TB
I am surprised how come Cirtix who is depended on Microsoft and has such an explaination where as no where on microsoft site I find any such calculation of calculator.

    "Error while crawling LOB contents. ( Error caused by exception: Microsoft.BusinessData.Infrastructure.BdcException The shim execution failed unexpectedly - The method or operation is not implemented..; SearchID "
    Because of this i suspect, the search results are not including those aspx pages marked as "Hide physical urls from search".
    This error is not available in the another environment where the aspx pages are coming in the results.

    Hi Joe,
    Greetings!
    Reset the index and re-crawl. That usually clears it
    If you are using NTLM authentication, then make sure that you specified the PassThrough authentication for crawling
    Probably you need to debug the BDC code that underlies the external content types.

  • How to automatic start Microsoft VDI Clients on Windows Embedded Standard 7

    Greetings,
    I'm deploy Microsoft VDI for my customer, I use HP Thin Clients with Windows Embedded Standard 7.
    when we start the thin clients, we first open the thin client desktop, then open the RDP connetions, and input the ip address to access the virtual desktop.
    I think it's very complex for the end users.
    I want when we start the thin clients, it automatic connect to the VDI server, we just need to input the username and password to access the users' virtual desktops.
    does anybody know how to set it, or if there are some clients tools ?
    Thanks.

    Hi,
    If you work with mstsc.exe (Microsoft Remote Connection client for Windows), you can simply pre-configure a customized connection and save it as a .RDP file. Then, users can open the connection
    via double clicking the .RDP file.
    In addition, you can create a startup script to run the .RDP file.
    Thanks.

  • Microsoft VDI Pooled Workgroup VMs

    I'm trying to create pooled workgroup VMs. That means that the VMs that the VDI pool creates wouldn't be domain joined. Is this possible?
    Also, does anyone have any working syspreped Windows 7 SP1 answer file? Every time I try, I get an error "vdi unable to retrieve the details of the virtual desktop collection". I have removed the top line shown below as some threads mentioned but
    I still get the error. I've tried this using the GUI, would doing it through powershell make a difference?

    Hi,
    Thank you for your posting in windows Server Forum.
    As per my research, I can say that this is prerequisites for installing RDS role on server. (Quoted from below article)
    1.  All RDS Servers must be joined to the same Active Directory Domain.
    2.  Before you can create a VDI collection, the template (gold image) Virtual Machine must be sys-prepped.

    Hi,
    Thank you for your posting in Windows Server Forum.
    Can you specify the error which you are facing during VDI setup for server 2012?
    I might think that you need to check the memory setting for server 2012, as might happens that due to less memory you can’t setup the VDI setup properly.
    Memory: If the Master VM is configured with static memory, it must have at least 1024 MB as startup RAM. If the Master VM is configured with dynamic memory, the maximum RAM must be at least 1024 MB.

  • Oracle Infrastructure hardware sizing

    We are planning on installing an Oracle environment for a digital student portfolio. This environment has 15000 users and might have around 100 concurrent users at certain moments.
    We are thinking of putting database, webapplication and oid login on different servers.
    The following hardware sizing, can anyone shine a light on this and tell if 2 cpu and 3600mb ram is good enough for these nodes, considering 100 concurrent users?
    Oracle 10 database server
    2 cpu Intel Xeon 3ghz
    3600 mb ram
    Great IO performance of an EMC Clarion CX500 SAN
    Oracle 10G Web/application server
    2 cpu Intel Xeon 3ghz
    3600 mb ram
    Great IO performance of an EMC Clarion CX500 SAN
    Oracle 10G OID server
    2 cpu Intel Xeon 3ghz
    3600 mb ram
    Great IO performance of an EMC Clarion CX500 SAN

    I understand, like with all things, it depends! That is why im NOT looking for a guarantee, but for a common indication.
    "Of course it depends, but u can say that most people are around 180 cm tall. This gives the maker of a car a guideline."
    So im looking for examples of sizing that would underline that my described sizing is good enough or not (keeping normal average use in mind, freezing all factors that depend to a standard normal value)

  • Microsoft Update and Hardware driver updates

    Question is do you use them or not?  I have the following driver updates showing up as optional for my machine:
    Intel - Network - Intel(R) Wireless WiFi Link 4965AGN

    Realtek - Network - Realtek RTL8168B/8111B Family PCI-R Gigabit Ethernet NIC (NDIS 6.0)

    I know I had talked to Toshiba Customer/Technical Service and that individual had told me not to use those.  I have been told by others to go ahead and use them since they are Windows/Microsoft "approved" from those manufacturers.
    Thank you for your assistance and opinion.

    The Toshiba support technican is right;  the 'others' are wrong.  Do not install driver updates from Microsoft.  They are 'generic' updates, and will not work correctly in your Toshiba.

    Hi
    I have followed the steps, which you have mentioned in the below link. http://social.microsoft.com/Forums/en-US/partnerwinserver2012/thread/235594d6-a42d-4345-8a77-05481d8bc8bd#451ec885-bbff-4bf7-addb-983f22683c82
    We have deployed 3 servers and tried to start the pooled managed desktop, it is showing an error in final stage. The error is " the integration components in the virtual desktop
    template are not the correct version”. We have installed integration service setup and completed sysprep steps in windows 7 pro SP1 machine also.
    Please let us know the furthers.
    Edward Antony.D | Quadrasystems.net India Pvt Ltd

    Hi A
    This means unless you updated the integration services on your Windows 2012 or Windows 7 VMs (and Windows Server 2008 R2), they will be running an older version of the Integration Services. Machine\Auto\IntegrationServicesVersion for the IC version,
    or from the host by using this command:
    To update the easiest way, extract the content from C:\Windows\System32\vmguest.iso from the Hyper-V host to a folder, then launch the setup.exe from the relevant support\<architecture> folder on each VM. For example:
    \\server\ISCUpdate\amd64\setup.exe /quiet /norestart
    Note that this will require a reboot of the VM at some point, but the /norestart suppresses.
    Let me know if this helps you
    Cheers

  • What type of licence to buy for a strictly Remote Desktop environment only?

    Hi there,
    I have a question about Server 2012 licensing for a specific operating environment. We have a single server in our company hosting our accounting and inventory software. Our software vendor allows us to use Remote Desktop Connection to connect to the server
    and use the software without needing to install individual copies in each user's machine.
    I also understand that Windows Server 2012 comes without pre-packaged CALs like how it used to be with Server 2003/2008 (where it came with a server licence and 5 CALs automatically).
    What's the appropriate licence needed for a usage environment like this? I am pretty sure we have to purchase RDS licenses (previously Terminal Services License) for each machine, but must each license be accompanied with a regular Client Access License? Our
    accounting software is unlike some other setups where the data is hosted on the server but all operating power is focussed on the client PC. In our scenario, all work is done exclusively on the server.

    Thanks for the replies. I have finally found a definitive answer on the Microsoft website (after a few days of virtual digging).
    http://download.microsoft.com/download/6/B/A/6BA3215A-C8B5-4AD1-AA8E-6C93606A4CFB/Windows_Server_2012_R2_Remote_Desktop_Services_Licensing_Datasheet.pdf
    And I quote for the benefit of everyone else looking for the same answers:
    "While RDS is shipped with Windows Server software, it is licensed separately through a Client Access License (CAL) model. This means that each accessing end point (i.e., a User or a Device) must be covered by an RDS license to access Microsoft VDI infrastructure.
    And this CAL is an additive CAL, which means that in addition to a Windows Server CAL, customers must acquire a Windows Server RDS CAL for each user or device that:
    - Directly or indirectly accesses any of the RDS product functionality, and/or
    - Directly or indirectly interacts with the graphical user interface of the server software using RDS functionality or other third-party technology
    For example, to access RDS functionality in Windows Server 2012 R2, Windows Server 2012 CALs and Windows Server 2012 RDS CALs are required along with the server software licenses."

  • I need some suggestions on what type of dock to buy for my iPod Touch 4 that would be combatable with it.

    I use to have a JBL dock for my iPod Touch 4 but it no longer works with it.  I seem to be having some problems finding a dock that would work with a iPod Touch 4.   All I want is a good dock with stereo sound and that is chargable and would also have an adaptor so I won't have to use batteries but one with batteries will do if that's all I can find.  I don't need one that has a radio and a clock with it.  One that probably doesn't go over 100.00.  Would like some suggestions from anyone please?   Thanks.

    Hi Pratik,
    Thank you for posting in Windows Server Forum.
    It all depends on how you want to configure your VDI environment. In Server 2012\R2 there are 2 flavors: Pooled & Personal and further can deploy both that as Managed\UnManaged deployment. You can check following article for further details.

  • How to make WinTPC a direct VDI w/2012 Server from login(SSO) Pooled VM Collection SOLVED !

    Pre-Reqs:
    WinTPC machines must be domain joined
    All VDI infrastructure is 2012(RD Web, CB, VH, GW) you might be able to use 2008R2 I did not use any so dunno..
    All certificates must be in place for SSO
    1. Setup 2012 VDI infrastructure to use SSO
    2.Set group policy applied to WinTPC machines OU to allow Credential Delegation see:
    http://blogs.msdn.com/b/rds/archive/2007/04/19/how-to-enable-single-sign-on-for-my-terminal-server-connections.aspx
    3. Steal the RDP file from RDWeb (do a view source to get the path to the RDP file then download it) place in a network location, we use a folder in netlogon. Alternatively you could create your own RDP file and include the loadbalanceinfo:s:tsv://VMResource.1.MYPOOLEDCOLLECTION_Name
    4. Use a GPO to set a Custom Interface on the WinTPC machines it should execute a powershell or vbscript that runs the .rdp file,  in our case we  use a logon script to copy a powershell script to the local machine, then use that
    as the custom interface, it loops watching for the mstsc process to end..when it does it logs the user off. (sample)
    #VDI-RDP.ps1
    & 'c:\windows\system32\mstsc.exe' c:\start\myrdpfile.rdp
    sleep -s 10
    while(get-process mstsc){sleep -s 10}
    logoff.exe
    Custom Interface GPO is here:
    User\Administrative Templates\System\Custom User Interface\
    "powershell.exe" -windowstyle hidden c:\start\vdirdp.ps1
    Voila !
    When domain users login to the WinTPC they get a VDI session only... once they close the session either by logging off or closing the RDP session.. they are logged off of the WinTPC machine
    MS really should document this somewhere.. not everyone wants to access VDI from  RDweb.... :(   nor do they wish to have to authenticate multiple times...
    Good luck with it !

    Thank you dear Steve for the detailed steps,
    I have an issue to set the RD Web Access for SSO.
    I followed below article without success and I saw your comment.
    http://www.anilerduran.com/index.php/2012/sso-single-sign-on-thoughts-on-rds-remote-desktop-services-2012/
    I am using RDS 2012 R2 environment.
    Could you please provide more steps on how to run SSO for the RD Web?:
    Point Number 2 is not clear.
     To turn on Windows Authentication:
                  - uncomment <authentication mode="Windows"/> section
                  - and comment out:
                  1) <authentication mode="Forms"> section.
                  2) <modules> and <security> sections in <system.webServer> section at the end of the file.
                  3) Optional: Windows Authentication will work in https.  However, to turn off https, disable 'Require SSL' for both RDWeb and RDWeb/Pages VDIR.
                     Launch IIS Manager UI, click on RDWeb VDIR, double click on SSL Settings in the middle pane, uncheck 'Require SSL' and
                     click Apply in the top right in the right pane.  Repeat the steps for RDWeb/Pages VDIR.

  • Creating calculation based on result of dropdown box

    Hi there. I am hoping someone will be kind enough to help me with some Javascript as it seems I am too blonde and middle aged to figure it out by myself.
    I have a dropdown box 'Member'. The value for Yes is 0. The value for No is 10.
    Then I have three check boxes. 'Day1' value is 35. 'Day2' value is 25. 'Dinner' value is 65.
    If Yes is selected, I want the sum of the check boxes if they are checked. (eg, total if all checked = 125)
    If No is selected, I want the value of each check box increased by 10. (eg, total if all checked = 155)
    I am using Acrobat X.
    Thanks in advance.

    Because of the fact that you want to add a constant to a number of values if a given condition is meet then you will need to use a custom calculation script.
    // get the value of the fields
    var cMember = Number(this.getField("Member").value);
    var nDay1 = this.getField("Day1").value;
    var nDay2 = this.getField("Day2").value;
    var nDinner = this.getField("Dinner").value;
    // define a varaiable for the sum
    var sum = 0;
    // day 1 plus adjustement
    if (nDay1 != "Off") sum += Number(nDay1) + cMember;
    // day 2 plus adjustement
    if ( Day2 != "Off") sum += Number(nDay2) + cMember;
    // dinner plus adjustement
    if (nDinner != "Off") sum += Number(nDinner) + cMember;
    event.value = sum;
    Excel is only easy if you accept Microsoft's view of calculations.
