Microsoft Windows (7) boot from (native) VHD : Question about missing boot (flag) on active primary partition

Hi!
First, where can I post queries about native VHDs on Windows 7?
I see VHD Native Boot and Driver Cloning  in Windows Desktop Development forums >  General
Windows Desktop Development Issues,
(when I navigate there the option's N/A, http://i.imgur.com/9Vj7tPJ.png )
I've finally copied my VHD(s), and tested the copies by adding BCD(edit) entries, pointing to the new VHD's.
I had a failure with a native VHD. I managed to copy the VHD file from the (internal) HD, before cleaning the HD and restarting from scratch (new vdisk created and attached, win7 reinstalled).
The original VHD ('Win7VHD') is still working, but won't boot (see mounted Disk 3 (I:), compared to the active,
bootable partition (C:).
http://i.imgur.com/KXU0QWi.png
Before creating a fresh install on the new, clean "VHD (Win7)" volume, I tried lots of things to fix the "won't boot" issue with the VHD (rebuild MFT, fixBR... without ever knowing exactly what I was doing :()
So I've created a BCD entry for the recovered VHD... now, can I make it bootable again?
(I don't know what the root of the bootable VHD has to contain)
(Thanks in advance to all you cool cats :)

  • Recover/install Win7 onto multi-boot system - too many primary partitions?

I have a few questions:  (first a background question, and then I'll get to the heart of the issue)
First, on a new laptop with factory installed Win7, I see there are 3 primary partitions - a 1.5GB "MBR-0", a ~10GB recovery partition, and the main installation partition.  What is the 1.5GB one for, and what's on it?  An MBR certainly doesn't need 1.5GB.  Does Win7 create that, or is that something unique for Toshiba?
If I'm using a 3rd party boot-manager (BootitNG via an EMBR on its own partition), can I just wipe that 1.5GB partition?   And, can the recovery installation be set up to create the Toshiba-Win7 recovery partition (and that 1.5GB one) as extended volumes within the Win7 primary partition, and not to make them as its own new primary partition?
And now to the main problem:  (the gist of it is, how many partitions will the Win7 recovery disks create? and can I customize it?)
I have a new toshiba c650 laptop that came with Win7 installed.  I created the one-time recovery DVDs first thing (it made 4 of them - Disk 1,2,3, and "64-bit environment").
I then wanted to set up a multi-boot system between Win7, and 2 instances of XP (one of which is a fresh install, the other being an image backup off a computer that died). I want each OS on its own primary partition, where each only sees/knows of itself.  Also, I'll have one small, 50MB primary partition for the boot-manager program.
Of course, a drive can only have 4 primary partitions (if working with standard tools like fdisk, etc).  To get around that (if needed), my boot-manager program will support as many primary partitions as I want, provided I use only it alone to manage/create my partitions.
Skipping the details, here's what I have now:  I wiped the hard drive, except for that 1.5GB MBR-0 partitition, for now, till I find what it is.  (Since XP doesn't recognize Win7, using XP's install cd would overwrite the factory Win7 installation, so I installed XP first on its own primary partition - and it's working fine).  I have the boot manager program on a second primary partition.  I then created 2 more primary partitions - one to place the XP-drive-image into, and one to install Win7.  So, the entire drive is now fully utilized and partitioned.
    But here's the problem...
starting with the boot manager program, I'm pointing to boot from the empty Win-7 partition, which upon finding no OS, will cue it to boot from the DVD, and go on about its installation business.  So far so good.  At this point, Win7 will only "see" the empty partition reserved for it.  However, if Win7 tries to create an extra 1 or 2 new primary partitions (like how it came from the factory), the drive will end up with 6 primary partitions - not good.  So, my XP partitions would likely get overwritten.
Having 6 primary partitions wouldn't be a problem, as long as I create/manage them only with the boot manager - but in this case the Win7 installation would likely create them during installation instead. If I pre-create those partitions (the 1.5GB one, and the 10GB one) with the boot manager, can I point Win7 during the installation to utilize those?  How?
One more side note:   When I'm in XP now, XP only "sees" it's own partition, but still senses that there's more room on the drive - it just considers it all as unallocated space.  I'm guessing Win7 would do the same thing?  And if it does, I'm worried it would start sticking its own new partitions there into what it "sees" as "unallocated space", even though my other partitions are there.
If you made it through this longwinded mess, thanks for what help you can provide!  How should I get Win7 on there, without damaging the existing partitions?

Ok, so I finally got it all to work.
In case anyone else runs into this question where you have to use the Toshiba recovery DVDs to reinstall Windows 7, without damaging other existant partitions, here's the trick:  You have to pre-create an NTFS primary partition at the very front of the disk (1st primary partition), make it at least 20GB (preferably more, since this will be where you run Windows7 - unless you also later create another partition solely for data/programs/etc). Then during the recovery, select the option to keep current partitioning intact.  Everything will be placed in that first partition alone (the contents of which which the Win7 setup will erase), and the rest of your disk will be fine.
If you have other partitions already there, and on the rest of the disk, you'll have to first resize the existing partitions to create enough room for this new 1st primary partition.  Then you'll have to shift or slide the current partitions up toward the back end of the disk (with 3rd party software). I also deleted the 1.5GB partition originally at the front of the disk (it's the startup repair partition, I learned), and I had previously deleted the 10GB recovery partition that came factory-placed at the back end of the disk.
The XP-partition I already had on the disk is tested and working fine, and wasn't touched at all by the Windows7 recovery installation.  Installing additional XP-images or other OS's should be simple enough now.

  • Lost Windows 7 boot option after creating new partition

First of all im new to Mac os.
i have installed windows 7 using boot camp and after it i tried to create a new partition from the main mac partition and it was created successfullly however now the windows 7 boot option is not available for some reason.
how can i have this option back?

You broke it by adding the extra partition, remove Boot Camp (read the directions as to how) and start again. Do not add partitions next time.
Do not use Disk Utility to remove the Boot Camp Partition, use it to remove any extra partitions.
    Backup your machine now.

  • Windows steals boot flag in dual boot

I have installed windows on sda1, boot on sda2, mostly replicating what is suggested in the windows dual boot article.  On arch setup, I flag 2 as bootable and 1 as not bootable.  However, when windows runs, it flags sda1 as bootable and the next time I restart, I go immediately into windows.  Is there a way to stop windows from doing this outside of windows OS?

Like jowilkin said, the bootable flag does not matter as long as Windows can boot its ok to leave it as it is.
When you are dual booting with Windows, its easier to have grub installed to the MBR so that it overwrites Windows' bootloader. Grub can boot to just about anything.

  • Recovering from crash. Questions about iPhone andiTunes library files, etc.

Hi all - Had a major system crash which I'm trying to recover from. My iTunes purchases are backed up, as well as the iTunes application folder and everything contained within.
Anyway, I've reinstalled Window and iTunes and have all my iTunes purchases up and running, but have a couple of questions.
    1) My new iTunes install thinks my iPhone is still synced to another iTunes library and wants to Erase and Sync to connect it to this new one. I'd obviously like to be able to sync without erasing, so are there settings and library files from my backed up iTunes directory that I can copy over to my freshly-installed iTunes directory to allow this to work?
    2) Similarly, if there is a way to do this, will I be able to connect my old iPod that was also synced to my old iTunes and copy over the non-iTunes purchased songs? I have my CDs, no no real worry -- just would be simpler this way...
    Thanks!

Assuming you have the default itunes setup, if you backed up your c:/.../music/itunes folder, it has the itunes database in it.
    iTunes Library.itl
If you didn't make a backup of that folder and do not have the ITL file, you can try getting playlists, ratings, playcounts etc back from the iphone by using a 3rd-party ipod manager.
This ilounge article explains it more;see page 3

Make sure it supports iphone - not all of the other programs do.

  • Question about "missing glyph" error in CS4/CS5 live preflight

    Hi all
Basically I'm wondering what the "missing glyph" error refers to specifically and what are the implications of such an error. The help file doesn't mention it, as far as I can see.
I have some PDFs (from WordPerfect) which are causing this error when imported into Indesign. I think the pages which cause this error have been corrected with a PDF editor (Iceni Infix) but Acrobat reports all the fonts are embedded and subsetted. A third-party preflight programs reports everything is okay too.
Am I safe to ignore these errors?
    thanks,
    Iain

I'm not sure "Missing Glyph" picks up missing glyphs in PDFs. What does ID point to when you click the page number hyperlink in the Preflight panel?
If you have missing glyphs in your document text, they will look something like this:
-- then again, perhaps you cannot see the pink highlight because of background (an image) or foreground (another character 'on top of it', or perhaps even a graphic over the text).
How serious this is? It's ... critical! As you can see in my image, the only thing InDesign can do is notify you with the pink highlight and temporarily insert the font's own "missing" image (which may be a rectangle, a question mark, or even just a space).
Fortunately, if you do need the character, all you have to do is change the font (for those characters only) to one that does contain the missing ones. You'll have to try all your system fonts before you find one that does and matches the rest of your text as well :-)
There are a few special cases where InDesign gets it wrong, though. The Symbol font, for example, might not get imported correctly from Word, and in that case you have to manually change the character -- i.e., find the correct one in the Glyphs panel and insert it from there. There is also the Strange Case of the Invisible Marker: InDesign thinks there is something but if you check against the original Word file, there is nothing. This will usually insert a character code U+FFFD; you can safely delete them.

  • Question about missing file

Hello - I'm having an issue with Visual Studio, undoubtedly related to my own ignorance.  Here goes:  Installed VS2012, have dev site on Sharepoint Online, created new Sharepoint project in VS2012, which rolls out all the required files.  The
default.aspx file, however, indicates that the sp.js file is missing.  However, the sp.runtime.js file is not missing?  Both of those files are present, installed with the Sharepoint Client Components.  The computer I'm using does NOT have Sharepoint
installed on it, and since I'm trying to develop for Sharepoint online, my understanding was that should not be necessary.  I'm sure this is something simple, but I just don't understand what it means (or if I should be concerned about it.)

Yes, I've tried that.  Just now in fact, I tried it again.  Still doesn't work.  Yesterday, I noticed that I had two versions of the Sharepoint Client Components installed, so I removed the older one (thinking new is better, right?)
Anyway, after doing that, now I see more errors!  Notice in the screenshot below, both sp.runtime.js and sp.js are marked as file not found:
Also, here are the output messages from the Javascript Language Service:
09:59:26.1179: Referenced file '~/_layouts/15/init.js' not found.
09:59:26.1189: Referenced file '~/_layouts/15/SP.Core.js' not found.
09:59:26.1189: Referenced file '~/_layouts/15/SP.Runtime.js' not found.
09:59:26.1189: Referenced file '~/_layouts/15/SP.UI.Dialog.js' not found.
09:59:26.1189: Referenced file '~/_layouts/15/SP.js' not found.
The Sharepoint Client Components install, as mentioned in the article in my reply to Steve Curran, installs the Javascript files at this location:  C:\Program Files (x86)\SharePoint Client Components\Scripts .  I am not sure how Visual Studio knows
where to find these files - I just did the dumb monkey install, clicking run and ok.  Is there something I need to do in Visual Studio to make the IDE or specifically the project aware of these files?

  • Question about missing picture

I did a bad action with my LR catalog. I'll try to explain. My original catalog contained directories with photos. All photos were properly stored in the catalog. I wanted to export the catalog and suddenly all my photos are found in the root directory of my file .lrcat, so all my photos are now mixed. So I opened a backup of my old catalog, but the pictures are missing. Is there a way to remap the photos into the original directories? Thanks for your help !

In fact, i'm not an expert as you can see. I'm beginner with LR and i did something with my catalog that i don't understand, that's why i can't tell you all the details anymore. What i can say is, before i had a catalog with a good organisation, all my photos were well organized, with synchronisation between LR and my HDD.
But from the time I made this export all my photos were moved into a single directory (44 500 files :-s). I think the only solution is to manually search the files for each directories ...

  • Question about clean WXP installation and activation key code

    Hi
I recently got this laptop 2nd hand and i want to make a clean install on it but i wasn't given a o/s disk.
Can i use the disk for my other pc and use the code that's on the back of this one to install it? or do i have to buy a new copy of xp?
    Hope someone can help.
    Regards ak

Using the disk on your computer may work with either the code on your computer or the 2nd hand laptop but you would have to install the drivers for the laptop manually from the Internet - best to download it first and place onto a CD just in case you cannot get to the Internet after the clean install. However, the codes may not work, depending on how they work. This is because it is technically illegal to do this even if you own the copy.
If you have the money for a new copy of XP, then I would recommend buying the new copy and licience.

  • Simple question about missing install disk

Trying to help a colleague with her laptop.
She had 10.4 on the machine and mistakenly reinstalled 10.3. She seems to only have Install disk 1.
Can a basic install be done with only that disk? No apps or anything, just the essential OS? Don't want to get half installed and be stuck.
    Thanks.

Disc Two has mainly printer drivers and pre-bundled software. You can do a full install of OS X including some printer drivers without the need for Disc Two. You can order replacements by calling AppleCare (have the computer's serial number handy.)

  • How to remove windows 7 safely from my dual boot win7/win8 pc ?

i have a pc which is dual boot with windows 7 ultimate 64 bit & windows 8 pro 64 bit, my pc had four drives C: D: E: F:, windows 7 is on "D:" drive & windows 8 is on C: drive(i had set win8 as current & default OS), now when i opened
disk management i found that the D: drive where win7 is residing is marked as
system, active, primary partition, now i don't want win7 anymore , i want only win8 on my pc, i want to format & get back clean empty D drive to use for other stuff (i don't want to delete the D drive partition), can any one explain me the steps
    needed to achieve this safely.

Since you've selected as default OS as Windows 8.1 you can go to disk management console and format the drive as required.
You can remove the Win 7 entry from boot loader:
    To launch msconfig:
    Click Start
In the Search text box, type msconfig
Launch msconfig by selecting it from the search results above the search text box.
    After msconfig is launched:
    Go to the Boot tab
Slect the boot entry you want to delete.
Click the Delete button and then click OK.

  • HT200158 How do you to access Microsoft windows 7 files systems from OSX mountain lion

http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4697 describes how to enable access to Microsoft windows file systems from an OSX lion system.
Mountain lion does not have this entry.
Now that I have a mac with Mountain LIon installed,
how do acces the files on a Microsoft windows 7 system that I have previously accessed?

Well as I pointed out in my post, "Sadly, my Text Edit documents are still all there, every single time I opened them and made a small change, there is another copy stretching all the way back to the day I installed Mountain Lion." so if you can explain to me how July 26 - Aug 16 is a week, I will concede that it is a good idea. Short of that, no I have been capable of making my own backups since I was 16 years old (16 years ago) I don't need my computer to endlessly do it for me in a way I am completely unable to shut off. That's what I have external hard drives, flash drives, a DVD burner, Drop Box, E-mail (as in emailing copies to myself) and icloud for. If I am doing something and I don't have access to a single one of those options, I don't know why I brought my computer with me in the first place. And I don't see how you can say it's an illusory gain in disk space, hundreds of copies of text documents, garageband files, Final Cut files, Motion Files and basically any program that makes files onto my comptuer that I can myself make incremental changes to, those all need to be stored somehow. Again, if you can explain to me how July 26 - Aug 16 is a week, I will agree with you that that is a good thing because IF it only saved for a week, it wouldn't be an issue. Sadly, no matter how many links you post, I still have text edit backups stretching from today back to July 26. They're not going away and I have no reason to beleive any other file I edit is going to go away either since they haven't been. They're all there eating up HD space and this imaginary "week" limit is simply not coming into effect. I hate it and there needs to be a simple way to simply shut it off. I didn't spend hundreds of dollars on external drives just for my main hard drive to be filled up with hundreds un useless, undeletable backups of stuff I already have backed up.

  • How to load Microsoft Media Center TV from inside of Touchsmart application

    Hello,
I would like to be able to launch Microsoft Windows Media Center from within Touchsmart software, however I seem not to be able to add the Windows Media Center application to the list of "Targets" in Touchsmart, actually I would have thought this would be already listed as a Target - but it's not....
In anycase, I tried to manually add it to my Target field but I get an error message in pink bouncing stupidly at me saying
"The target entered is not valid. Please check the spelling and enter the target again."
Here is what I did and would expect it to work, but doesn't - mind you if I enter this from the start->run command or from within a shortcut, the command works, it loads up and runs the TV bypassing the Media Center startup menus....
    In Touchsmart application,...
    1. Click Personalize
    2. Click Add a Tile...
    3. Click on Program type and then Next button
    4. In Target field type in:
    C:\Windows\EHOME\EHSHELL.EXE /HOMEPAGE:VideoFullscreen.XML /PUSHSTARTPAGE:TRUE
    5. In Title Name enter "TV"
    6. Choose an icon from the Icon list
    7. Click on OK
(Here is where I get the error mentioned)

I think I see what you mean,...
When adding a new Tile, there is no Advanced option available - right? "Now don't go telling me that there is and advanced option there" I'll kill myself if there is lol
So what you are saying is that you need to add only the command in the target without the parameters when adding a tile - only then you'll be able to save the tile right?
Once the TV tile is saved, you can then go back and Edit the Tile and in the Edit Screen you now should see there is an Advanced options where you can add the Parameters separately from the target.
Logically thinking though they should have the parameter field in the add tile option, or provide an advanced option as they do in the edit tile - you shouldn't have to go back to edit the tile you just added to add the parameters...
Anyway thank you for that - this now works better as I can choose the programs icon instead of the default range...
However for the sake of the interface the add tile really should include the parameters so that it makes it a lot more intuitive to the user when adding a new tile...
