Microsoft Word 2004 crashes on opening

This appears to be quite common, endemic even on macs. Having posted a question on Mactopia - no response - I thought I would try the Mac forum, as it is a program made for Macs. Anyway, when I click on word, it crashes. Can anyone please help? I have repaired permissions, switched off, checked fonts and searched for an answer, but to no avail. All other Microsoft programs open normally. The message I get is as follows:

I have rarely seen any posts to that effect!
it is a program made for Macs
By Microsoft.
I am running the same version of Word (and the rest of Office) and they have never crashed in three years of use on Tiger and 3 months on Leopard.
What operating system are you using?
For how long has this been going on?
Do you use Macros?
It may be worth using the uninstaller to delete the application and then re-install from the disk and update it again.

  • Microsoft Word 2004 unable to open with Leopard

I just recently upgraded to Leopard 10.5.5. When I attempt to open Microsoft Word (2004) I am given an error reading 'font NSWCursive Outlined is corrupt and should be removed'. I have attempted to reload Office without success.
    Any help would be great.

    Welcome to Apple Discussions:
This is a common plaint discussed here and in the Install and Setup forum many times in many threads.
Some have gotten it to run, others updated to 2008, while others switched to NeoOffice or OpenOffice which work nearly flawlessly with Leopard and are free.
If you search these forums for "Microsoft Word 2004" you will find a plethora of information, some of which may be helpful.
Typically I think you have to do a complete uninstall and reinstall and be sure you have the very latest patches from MS.

  • Microsoft Word 2004 crashes repeatedly

Hello. I am running Word 2004 on an older Mac G4. It is running OS X 10.4.11.
Word has been continuously crashing for months. I tried repairing permissions, trashing Office and reinstalling a new version of it (which makes me think it's not Word with the problem), and trashing the preferences. None of this has helped and it still sporadically crashes (and doesn't save what I've been working on) which is extremely hindering my work.
Any suggestions on what else I can do to try and fix the problem or even figure out what the problem is? It just crashes and that screen that says "Microsoft Word unexpectedly quit" comes up.
    Thank you!

    Hi,
I was wondering if you were able to resolve the issue. I recently had my computer in for repairs. They've changed the hard drive and erased my whole data which I asked to be saved. Anyway, since then word 2004 is acting weird and keeps crashing every 10-15 seconds. My main use of the computer is for word processing and it is dead to me now. Apple "genious' says it is a problem with Microsoft and not them. But it was working just fine before they replaced the hard drive and update the system
now, I am even more hesitating to update leopard which I heard similar problems occurring with Office.
To be honest, without the Office, MAC has no charm for me. I exchange files with PC users and I need my computer to do that easily.
So, anyway, have you had any luck to fix it? Please let me know. I desperately need help!

  • Microsoft Word 2004 won't open in Leopard

I downloaded Leopard and everything went well and I used Microsoft Word a few times, then suddenly it won't open anymore.
I'm not sure if I downloaded something that's incompatible with it? Or something else happened? It won't let me update it and when I try to open it the words "The application Word quit unexpectedly" appear almost immediately. I checked my permissions, I checked the hard drive, but couldn't find the root of the problem.
    Someone please help!

How did you "download" Leopard since it is not available that way? You have to buy Leopard unless it came installed on your hardware when you purchased it.
After you did the Leopard update did you update Office to the latest version? If not use the Auto update feature built in to it and download and install all the updates. It does them one at a time so you may have to do 5-6 downloads to get them all.
If that does not work then I would uninstall Office using the uninstaller that is on the CD and reinstall it then bring it up to date.

    Hi Annelise,
The obvious questions must be asked. What has changed? Software or hardware added/updated/deleted? Has it been working without issue for days/weeks/months/years before this?

  • Word 2004 tries to open as a Classic application

Suddenly, without warning, in only one of the two user accounts on my iBook, Word has identified itself when I open its information panel, as 'Application (Classic)', explaining why it stimulates OS 9 to start up when Word is asked to open. But when OS 9 opens, it then tells me that Word 2004 requires OS X. This is not news to anyone, but indicates that, at least, Word 2004 hasn't changed into Word 98.
So Word 2004 can't open under my wife's user account, a nuisance as she rightly expects to be able to use it. All .doc documents in her folders have switched allegiance to Appleworks and won't allow their preferred application to be Word 2004, reverting to Appleworks immediately on an attempt to change it to Word from the document's Information window.
When I switch account to my own on the same iBook, there is no problem. Word opens seamlessly and all .docs work as usual.
So I believe the problem is one within the operating system rather than with Word itself.
I have repaired disk permissions using Disk Utility, which repaired some iTunes permissions but nothing to do with MS Office. I have restarted, logged out, emptied caches, to no avail.
Last year an almost identical question was asked, but had no sensible answer as far as I could see.
    Does anyone have a solution?
iBook   Mac OS X (10.4.9)   One of the final iBooks to walk out of the Apple store

The document opens with Appleworks, and the selection of Word in 'Get Info' reverts to Appleworks, and Word disappears as an alternative application in 'Get Info'.
Before the document opens, an 'OK' button box appears asking whether Microsoft Word documents should be opened with Microsoft Word. Hitting 'OK' makes no difference.
In Get Info MS Word is labelled 'Application (Classic)' instead of 'Application (Power PC) as it does when in the other user account on the same computer.

  • Freezing problem with Microsoft Word 2004

    Hi,
    I'm recently having this issue...
I would be working (typing) on my Microsoft Word 2004, then jump to another application, come back, and the Word would freeze. It does eventually unfreeze, but I have to wait about a minute until it does, and it gets a bit frustrating. I haven't lost any files due to this problem but I'm afraid I might sometime soon. If I'm just typing on it it's fine - it doesn't freeze. But it's when I use another application and go back to it it freezes. My CPU or memory is below average and I have 2GB of RAM so I don't think it has to do anything too many files/applications opened at the same time.
Does anybody know how to fix this/what's wrong with it?
    Thanks.

Thanks, I'll give it a try.  I already removed Acrobat Pro 9 from my
computer, but I'll be willing to try again with a new download.  I always
wondered by Word would open up when I was sending an e-mail...I don't need
fancy editing for e-mails.  So, now I know.
    Thanks again.

Hi I've just upgraded my MacBook Pro from Snow Leopard to Mountain Lion. Now my installed programs:- Quarkxpress 6.5 - Adobe creative suite CS2 - Adobe Acrobat 7.0 professional and Microsoft Office 2004 will not open - I get a banner saying not supported by power mac. Can anyone please help me I really need these programs for my work. Thank you!

    hi tuggerose
i think it is bad new for you. if it's any consilation i went through the same thing when i loaded mountain lion when it first came out. i think the problem is that mountain lion is a pure 64bit operating system and the software you have is 32bit. earlier os's were able to emulate 32bit but the new system does not. the answer is new software. i did it and it cost me a load of money and much angst so your not alone.

  • When I save a document in Microsoft Word 2010 and then open it, I am unable to read it

When I save a document in Microsoft Word 2010 and then open it, I am unable to read it because it is gibberish with all kinds of symbols and numbers.  I understand it has something to do with Adobe Reader.  Has anyone else had this problem and how do I correct it?

Put your cursor on the icon of one of your scanned documents. Click on the right button of your mouse. In the list that will appear, put your cursor on Properties and click on the left button of your mouse. In the window that you'll get, read and make a note of what you see next to "File type" and "Opens with". Then post here what you saw.

  • Word 365 crashes when opening an attachment in Notes

Word 365 crashes when opening an attachment in Notes.  I have tried a quick repair and an online repair.  I have uninstalled Office 365 and reinstalled it.  I have tried opening WINWORD in safe mode.

So the attachment itself is OK, and Word can open it successfully on the desktop. In this case, issue tends to be more on the Lotus Notes side.
We don't have a test environment for this currently, I'd suggest you check the Lotus Notes forum and see if other customers are having similar issues and any solutions out there.
On the Word side, you can check the event logs to see if there is anything useful there.

  • HT1338 this is the message I am getting:  The application "Microsoft Word" can't be opened.

I am unable to open my documents... "The application "Microsoft Word" can't be opened.  What is going on?

Unfortunately you got caught up in the minor miracle of Rosetta.  Originally licensed by Apple when it migrated from the PowerPC CPU platform that it had used from the mid-1990's until the Intel CPU platform in 2006, Rosetta allowed Mac users to continue to use their library of PPC software transparently in emulation.
However, Apple's license to continue to use this technology expired with new releases of OS X commencing with Lion (and now Mountain Lion).  While educational efforts have been made over the last 6 years, the fact is that Rosetta was SO successful that many users were caught unaware UNTIL they upgraded to Lion or Mountain Lion.
    Workarounds:
    1. If your Mac will support it, revert back to your older OS X;
    2.  If your Mac will support it, either partition your hard drive or add an external hard drive and install Snow Leopard (with Rosetta) to allow for a "dual-boot" system;
    3.  Upgrade your PowerPC software or use an alternative programs; or
    4.  The solution I use: Install Snow Leopard (and Rosetta) into Parallels 7 or 8:

Full Snow Leopard installation instructions here:
    http://forums.macrumors.com/showthread.php?t=1365439
NOTE: STEP ONE of the instructions must be completed on a Snow Leopard or Lion Mac and the resulting modified Snow Leopard.cdr install file can then be moved over to your Mountain Lion Mac for completion of the remaining steps.

Word can't open or does it open but you can't open documentts?
If you have Office does Excell or Power Point open? If they do you can perhaps check for updates with either of them: Help > Check for Updates. You can also try to reinstall Office with your installation disks. Don't delete Office, just try to install it again.
