Microsoft Word and wierd parentesses

I am trying to quote an internet source in a paper I am writting. I copied and pasted the certain phrase I wanted into Microsoft word. Now when I try to put into quotes it first show the parentheses then it automatically transforms into this symbol: « I don't know what is going on. I tried the document it on my other mac and the parenteses are doing the same thing on it. what is going on. I NEED to finish this paper and this internet source is exactly what I need. I would copy and paste the parentheses but I need to interact with this source ALOT and that would be a PITA. Help Please. Why is it doing this and is there anything I can do to overwrite this automatic function. thanx
ps: The document allows me to use parentheses in other random places , but not even with specific words I have written my self ie my name on top of the paper, it gives me that wierd symbol.

I think what you're saying is that Word is automatically substituting "smart quotes" for "straight quotes". These are parentheses: ( ). In my older version of Word (v.X), go to Tools > AutoCorrect... > Autoformat As You Type, and uncheck the check box that does that.

Please find the steps to resolve your issue.
Open Installed Updates by clicking the Start button , clicking Control Panel, clicking Programs, and then, under Programs and Features, clicking View installed updates.
Click the update that you want to remove, and then click Uninstall. If you are prompted for an administrator password or confirmation, type the password or provide confirmation.
Or Try this step
If this does not resolve your issue then you can try a System restore to the date where unit was working fine steps provided below for you.
Start in search box type System Restore then click on it then select the Date where unit was working fine.

Yes. You can export iPad Pages and Keynote files as Word and PowerPoint files and you can upload/transfer/email Word and PowerPoint files to the iPad and work on them in Pages and Keynote.
Be advised that there will be some degree of formatting issues and also that the iOS versions of Pges and Keynote do not the full functionality of Word and PowerPoint on a computer.

Microsoft Word and Excel...poof! Gone from my dock.

I accidentially dragged microsoft word and excel off the dock and it poofed into nowhere. I found it elsewhere, and dragged it to the desktop. Tried to open it and got the "application microsoft word quit unexpectedly". So I dragged it down to the dock, and the same thing happened. I checked the trash, and I didn't throw it away, and even if I did I didn't empty the trash. Also, I tried to open both a word and excel document, and got the same message that the application quit unexpectedly. I'm at my wits end. Somebody please help me!

First, make sure you have the latest updates for Office.
Second, try reinstalling Office.
Third, try opening them in another account. If it works in another user account, then it is something in Office's preferences.
I have found that when Microsoft products get a bee in their bonnet, nothing can fix it beyond reinstall (even then there are problems).

Did you do this through one of the Office app updates, or did you download it directly from the Microsoft website?
Whichever way you tried it, I would try it the opposite way this time, although simply repeating what you did before may also work.

Lion does not support PowerPC coded applications. It sounds like the version you have are too old and were coded for PowerPC. Upgrade them.

You can also install Windows (new activation copy) on your Mac and use Windows natively, or for 99.9% of running Office apps, run Windows as a guest VM is fine. The data can be opened and edited and exported back to native Office format and opened in OpenOffice and others, or in Pages and Numbers, though whether those are satisfactory solutions or not you'll have to decide.
