Microsoft Word generates excessive console log entries

Since upgrading to MS Word 14.3.0 yesterday my console is filled with entries such as:

Microsoft's support site does not provide any clues.
Any thoughts?

Hi Peter, Dear all:
My console shows about 100 of the following messages per minute
2013-01-31 2:05:59.871 PM Microsoft Word[4332]: bind_window_backing: cannot map backing data shmem
2013-01-31 2:05:59.871 PM Microsoft Word[4332]: _CGSLockWindow: Unable to lock window
Besides that and since I upgraded to 14.3.0 two days ago, MS Word has crashed on me about 30 times (editing a plain simple text only document with track changes) and I've tons of problems with Word's GUI. I have submitted a couple feedback messages describing the problems to MS.
Realizing this is not the perfect place for this topic note that I have not found any statements from MS re problems with 14.3.0 yet and this is the first discussion I am aware of that recognizes a potential issue with the recent upgrade. My intent is merely to generate some momentum, so please contact MS if you do have problems with 14.3.0 - thanks!

  • Security (Console log entries)

The following entries appear repeatedly every few seconds in my Console log:
10/29/07 12:24:56 PM mDNSResponder[16] handleLNTGetExternalAddressResponse: Router returned bad address
    10/29/07 12:24:56 PM mDNSResponder[16] Error getting external address 3
My D-Link router is performing properly and I have no problems with the network connections between my two computers or my Internet connections.
I found four technical documents that reference mDNSResponder issues but they pertain mostly to Apple Security issues and do not suggest what might be causing the repetitive log error entries.
Any suggestions other than to just forget that I ever saw these log entries?

I did a state dump for mDNSResponder (sudo killall -INFO mDNSResponder) both before and after killing and restarting the process (sudo killall -KILL mDNSResponder). Then offender appears to be in this area:
    Oct 30 19:59:15 MaxG5 Unknown23: NAT Traversals
    Oct 30 19:59:15 MaxG5 Unknown23: 0080A21C UDP Int 4500 Ext 0 Err 0 Retry 822 Interval 900 Expire 0
    Oct 30 20:02:01 MaxG5 Unknown355: NAT Traversals
    Oct 30 20:02:01 MaxG5 Unknown355: <None>
Note the number of retries and the expire value.
After killing and having the process restart itself, the messages in the log go away. The NAT Traversals values in the mDNSResponse state appear to be gone as well.

  • No Console Log Entries

Trying to find root cause of near-daily lockups of this 2.4 GHz Macbook. All keys and mouse are locked and a long press on the power button is required.
-Tried to look at console messages and found that there are none since April of 2009.
-Tried to try Onyx to trigger the various log scripts. Downloaded and installed and found that it crashes on startup.
-Ran 10.5.8 combo updater. Did not change the above.
    Ideas?
    Thanks in advance,
    Tom

    William, Thanks for your response.
Q: "When you see nothing since April of 2009, what is selected in the left column? "
A: "Console Messages" under the "LOG DATABASE MESSAGES" heading.
system.log is accessible either thru console or through Finder>Go>Go to folder.... It has plenty of current messages.
When Onyx crashes, the log entry is:
    Mar 17 10:01:23 sue-pollaks-MacBook com.apple.launchd[82] ([0x0-0x49049].com.titanium.OnyX[960]): Exited abnormally: Trace/BPT trap
This doesn't give me any clues.
Yesterday the machine was sitting idle. Looking through the log entries, the only activity is Time Machine running at 23 minute past each hour. Then, at 22:35, the string of messages associated with booting begins. Hope it's OK to paste part of it here:

    THoughts?

  • Meaning of Console Log Entry? (and how to make it stop?)

The following occurs regularly in my console.log, and I'm wondering if anyone can point me to what might be causeing it:

It seems like something is trying to call an Open Transport routine to shut something down, but I don't have a clue what it would be.

    Thanks.
While Google didn't directly help, as I read various posts I realized checking "receive faxes on this computer" in System Preferences>Print & Fax panel was creating the repetitive message. Unchecking it stopped the message in the System Log.
    Aloha from Big Island.

  • Understanding the Console Log Entries

I am trying to decipher which USER_PROCESS stands for a logon. So when a user logs into the machine it is USER_PROCESS: # Console.
I just don't know which number it is. 44? 47? other?
Any help is very much appreciated.

It won't tell you much, but I think you'll get a +Login Window Started Security Agent+ message from a new loginwindow process. But it won't tell you which user logged-on.
If you're trying to monitor a particular account's usage, there's probably an app for that; I don't think you'll get much from the normal logs.
You might be able to write an Applescript or Automator to put in that user's Login items, that would update a file somewhere.
I haven't used +Parental Controls,+ but something there might do what you want.
You might find something in the +Account and Login+ section of the +Snow Leopard+ forum, either by browsing or searching.
If nobody responds to this thread for a while, you might want to repost with a title asking specifically how to do whatever it is.

  • Console log entry: unable to verify code signing identity

    Hi,
I can't recall if I encountered these issue earlier but today when I opened console I noticed  these messages popping up while launching  iWork apps simultaneously. It's the old problems that plugged me even before I did clean reinstall of my OS: when launching these apps I don't see windows opened or see only some of them. Just dock indicators. I have to hit the icons again to invoke the windows.
    Here's the full entry:
tccd: unable to verify code signing identity of com.apple.iWork.pages

    Hi,
I can't recall if I encountered these issue earlier but today when I opened console I noticed  these messages popping up while launching  iWork apps simultaneously. It's the old problems that plugged me even before I did clean reinstall of my OS: when launching these apps I don't see windows opened or see only some of them. Just dock indicators. I have to hit the icons again to invoke the windows.
    Here's the full entry:

  • Excessive 'SecurityServer' log entries for ServerEventAgent after Adaptive Firewall

    Hello all,
I'm running an OS X Server running 10.8.2. After enabling the Adaptive Firewall last night ( http://support.apple.com/kb/HT5519, http://support.apple.com/kb/TS4418 ), I started noticing a massive number of logs in /var/log/system.log that look like this:
    Jan 11 17:44:59 <hostname> com.apple.SecurityServer[21]: Succeeded authorizing right 'system.privilege.admin'
by client '/Applications/Server.app/Contents/ServerRoot/usr/libexec/ServerEventAgent' [131] for authorization
    created by '/Applications/Server.app/Contents/ServerRoot/usr/libexec/ServerEventAgent' [131] (2,0)
    Jan 11 17:44:59 <hostname> com.apple.SecurityServer[21]: Succeeded authorizing right 'system.privilege.admin'
by client '/Library/PrivilegedHelperTools/com.apple.serverd' [71] for authorization created by
    '/Applications/Server.app/Contents/ServerRoot/usr/libexec/ServerEventAgent' [131] (100000,0)
Does anyone have thoughts on this? They generally come in pairs like above. I've seen other SecurityServer logs while managing the server, but the number of them (and ServerEventAgent string) have really jumped up after trying to enable the Adaptive Firewall. I'm not even sure the firewall is working at this point, as running hb_summary tells me there have been 0 blocks in the last 24 hours. Yesterday, before trying to enable the AF, the server was trying to block login bots every few minutes, so I'm not sure everything is hooked-up correctly.
It should be noted that I had some trouble with the second KB article linked above because I had previously tried using IceFloor to manage the new pffirewall. Apparently IceFloor removes some lines from /etc/pf.anchors/com.apple and doesn't put them back when you uninstall the program. I re-added the two missing lines at the end (with Apple's edits):
    anchor "400.AdaptiveFirewall/*"
    load anchor "400.AdaptiveFirewall" from "/Applications/Server.app/Contents/ServerRoot/private/etc/pf.anchors/400.AdaptiveFirewall"
Any help would be greatly appreciated!

    Ahhhhhhh...that's gotta be it!
Um, I mean no, I did not have relations with that application.
    Thanks!

  • Apparent inconsistency in Console Log reporting of modem activity

I have a MAC Pro using (in this case) 10.4.11. It has an internal "on hold modem."
When I connect to the internet, the Console Log consistently and reliably adds this item:
    "Dec 23 00:13:42 jpnoaks-7500 /System/Library/Extensions/IOSerialFamily.kext/Contents/PlugIns/InternalModemSu pport.kext/Contents/Resources/AppleModemOnHold.app/Contents/MacOS/AppleModemOnHo ld: MOHServiceAddedProc >>\n"
HOWEVER, if I'm already connected and there's an incoming call, SOMETIMES an identical item is added in the Console Log and SOMETIMES nothing is added. The "on hold" features of the modem otherwise appear to behave normally.
Is there a ready explanation for this inconsistent behavior? It happens even when successive incoming calls are from the same phone and when an incoming call is from a phone that has never before called (although I'm not entirely certain about the latter).
Obviously, I'm trying to track modem activity using the Console Log.
    TIA

I'm still not absolutely certain about this, but it would appear that there's no Console Log entry added if the incoming call is from a phone
number that called in recently. How recently? -- I don't know.
One way I can see that this would be normal behavior would be if the computer keeps a record of incoming phone numbers and doesn't
report any event involving that number in the Console Log until the record is refreshed, which could be every hour, day, or whatever.
Is it possible the computer is keeping a record of incoming phone numbers?

  • Microsoft Word does not quit

    Microsoft Word does not quit
    MBP X.4.6
I upgraded my computer from a G4 powerbook to a MBP. In the process I also went from system X.3.9 to 4.6.
Since opgrading I have problems with Microsoft Word.
When I log out or shut down Microsoft Word refuses to quit. It hangs and I have to force quit it to get the computer to log of or shut down.
    Any suggestions to fix it
    Thanks
    Eric

It also includes updates prior to that.
You can look at the whole list to see what's been
    fixed from 11.2 to 11.2.4.
    It's a combo update.
Well, yes, and I remember that 11.2.0 (Mac Service Pack 2, and the version I am at) supposedly addressed stability issues with Word, but I can't find any info on the download page that suggests 11.2.1-11.2.4 does anything else to address Word stability (e.g. 11.2.1 deals mainly with an Entourage issue for example).

  • Word 2008 & System Log Entries

Whenever I open Word 2008 there is a flood of never ending entries in System Log as long as Word 2008 is open. This is an example:
*Feb 20 14:40:10 Macintosh Microsoft Word[728]: CGBitmapContextGetData: invalid context*
    *Feb 20 14:40:40: --- last message repeated 276 times ---*
Are others with Word 2008 and my Mac configuration receiving similar System Log entries?
If so, any suggestions for a solution?

I have that same problem lookin in my console.. can anybody help us out here???

  • Adding Company Knowledge with OpsMgr 2012 Console - "Failed to launch Microsoft Word"

    Hi everyone!
I'm trying to add company knowledge using the OpsMgr 2012 console (32-bit) on Windows 7 Ultimate (32-bit) using the guidelines provided at the following link...
    http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/hh212900.aspx
I'm using Office 2010 Pro Plus SP1 (32-bit) with the .NET Programmability feature and the Microsoft Visual Studio 2005 Tools for Office Second Edition Runtime installed, but I get the dreaded "failed to launch Microsoft Word" error...
...any help or guidance would be greatly apprecaited!
    Regards,
    JJ

    Thanks Andres!
I have confirmed that the following instructions does allow you to use Word 2010 32-bit running on Windows 7 64-bit or Windows Server 2008 R2 to edit company
    knowledge...
    1. Go to the directory where the OpsMgr console is installed (example: C:\Program Files\System Center\Operations Manager 2012\Console )
    2. Make a copy of Microsoft.EnterpriseManagement.Monitoring.Console.exe.config
    3. Edit Microsoft.EnterpriseManagement.Monitoring.Console.exe.config using Administrator rights
    4. Search for “</dependentAssembly>” and remove the “<publisherPolicy apply="no" />” line immediately following the “</dependentAssembly>” line
    Hope this helps!
    Regards,
    JJ
Well, firstly I have to agree with other people's comments along the lines of "It shouldn't be this hard!", but I can happily say that the solution above (by IM5FOOTNOTHIN)
worked for me...once I noticed this crucial footnote: "Do this for
    ALL instances of the
<publisherPolicy apply="no" /> line that immediately follow the </dependentAssembly> line"

  • Strange Entries in System and Console Logs

I have some strange entries in my system and console logs. In the system log, I regularly see these entries:
Feb 24 21:07:29 joseph-youngs-computer /System/Library/PrivateFrameworks/Apple80211.framework/Resources/airport: Error: owner of process not logged in on console - exiting.
    Feb 24 21:20:32 joseph-youngs-computer kernel[0]: (82: coreservicesd)tfp: failed on 0:
In my console log, I regularly find these entries:
    2006-02-25 09:23:24 -0600
    2006-02-24 21:07:30.530 loginwindow[803] FSResolveAliasWithMountFlags returned err = -43
On occasion, I find something like this in my console log:
    Assert failed: /Users/dave/dev/flash/player/FlashPlayer/platform/mac/plugins/../../../core/spl ay.cpp:7105
I admit to being something of a novice with the Mac, so I am not sure what to make of these entries, though I never noticed anything like this on my eMac, or on my prior iMac. Also, on the entry above, there are no users named dave on my Mac.
Has anyone else noticed this, and can anyone shed any light on what these messages mean?

    Resolved with a clean install.

  • Generating PDF from Microsoft Word with C#

    Hello,
We have created web-based system for a customer that stores/handles Microsoft word documents and provides these to users as PDF versions. Unfortunately some problems appear with our third-party component that generates PDF from Word. Our customer has previously used Adobe Acrobat X Pro to manually generate the PDF files and is confident that the output produced this way is valid. Despite searching and reading a lot I can't find any way to determine if (and how) it is possible to automate the process of generating a PDF file from a Microsoft word file using the Adobe engine. There is a lot of SDK documentation, how to control PDF rendering in winforms applications etc. etc. All I want to do is to load an Adobe Acrobat instance, feed it with a word document and save it as a PDF on disk. From a C# app (ASP.NET). Is that possible?
    Best regards
    Jan Hansen

As mentioned, you can probably send the DOC file to the Adobe PDF printer to create the file. What I keep reading in your post is a legal issue. You keep mentioning being able to create the PDF on a server automatically. The server use of Acrobat is a violation of the EULA. If you are creting the files off-line for posting as has been done, there should not be a problem. However, having these created in an automated manner by the user may be an issue. Before you go much further, I would check with legal counsel about the use of Acrobat in the way you intend. If they indicate there is a problem, then your question is not needed.
Back to the issue. Try just dropping a DOC file on the Adobe PDF printer icon (you may have to open the Start>Printers to do that. See if that creates the PDF. If so, you will just need to automate that process.

  • Live links in PDFs generated from Microsoft Word 2008?

A couple of years ago, I was informed that my live links (bookmarks, indexmarks, etc.) in documents generated by Microsoft Word 2004 for the Macintosh did not become PDF live links in Acrobat Standard 7 because the Mac version from Microsoft Word 2004 didn't use the necessary hooks (
    i "APIs"
or something like that) even though the Windows version did.
Now that MS Word/MS Office 2008 for the Mac is coming out, will we be able to generate PDFs with such live links.
Any input will be most appreciated.
Acrobat Standard 7.0.9. Tiger 10.4.11. Dual bootable, DP MDD 1.25GHz G4 (2004), maxed out at 2GB of RAM, both Spotlight and Dashboard disabled, Photoshop primary scratch disk on dedicated 160GB internal drive, at least 100GB available on each of the four internal drives, up to 300GB on some. Counting external FW drives just over 1TB of drive space available. nVidia GeForce 7800 GS 425MHz 256 MB graphics display card. Processor napping enabled through CHUD 3.5.2.

While this does not answer the problem of live links. (You can create them Manually, they just are not generated direct from Office Mac).
The answer to the other question of the little annoying PDFMaker Menu (that never really worked correctly for me (took 5 minutes just to generate a 108K PDF).
Because MicroSoft took out VBA Support on Mac side That rendered the PDFMaker menu useless because it uses VBA to work.
So what they have done in Word 2008 is actually put it as Translator choice on the save menu. They now directly can save Word Files directly as PDF files. once you have created your file and saved it. Then go again to *Save As....* , when menu open scroll mouse down until you run across the choice PDF. select that and save. not only is it easier a 108K document can be saved in about 15 seconds or less not the old 5 minutes going through PDFMaker.
One of PDFMaker's failings was that each step of conversion it called up Distiller which first created a .PS file. Then it checked the file. Then created the PDF file. Then checked the file again before actually writing the PDF File. Then only after checking the written PDF, would it delete the invisible PS file. Finally the PDF file was created. Naturally with all the check steps if you have a very large file could take ages.
With word's new feature (2008) you can generate a PDF at blinding speeds.
