Microsoft Word launches at login

Anyone know how to change settings so that Word (Office for Mac 2011) doesn't open everytime I open my computer (including startup, login, and waking)?

OK, I think this is the Resume feature of OS X:
Dealing With The Resume Feature of Lion
Managing Mac OS X Lion's application resume feature.
If you shutdown your computer you should get a dialog asking if you want applications to resume on the next startup. Simply uncheck the box to prevent that from occurring. Open General preferences and uncheck the option to Restore windows when quitting and re-opening apps. You can also install a third-party utility to control resume features on individual applications: RestoreMeNot or Application State Cleaner.
It is possible to completely stop the Resume feature although I'm unconvinced that it is that annoying. Nevertheless see the following:
If you have not yet done so you must first make your /Home/Library/ folder visible. Open the Terminal application in the Utilities folder. At the prompt paste the following command line:
chflags nohidden ~/Library
Press RETURN. Quit the Terminal application.
In the Finder navigate to the /Home/Library/Saved Application State/ folder. Delete the contents of the folder. Back up to the /Home/Library/ folder. Select the Saved Application State folder. Press COMMAND-I to open the Get Info window. In the Sharing and Permissions panel at the bottom click on the lock icon and authenticate. Set each of the listed entries to Read Only. Close the Get Info window.
Quit all open programs except the Finder (this is very important.) Next, navigate to the /Home/Library/Preferences/ByHost/ folder. Look for a .plist file with "com.apple.loginwindow." in the file name followed by some numbers in hexadecimal. Select the file. Press COMMAND-I to open the Get Info window and in the Sharing and Permissions panel click on the lock icon and authenticate. Set each of the listed entries to Read Only. Close the Get Info window. If you also find a file with the same filename but with a last extension of ".lockfile," then you should delete it.
The above should eliminate the Resume feature system-wide. Note that any future system updates or upgrades will likely undo these changes. You will then need to repeat this procedure assuming there are no major changes in OS X related to it.
Also, open General preferences and check or uncheck the option to close windows when quitting applications. Next, do a shutdown of your computer. During shutdown it should ask if you want to reopen windows on startup. Disable that option.
One of these should fix the problem.

  • Microsoft Word launches automatically when I log in to my iMac

    I have reviewed the previous discussions relating to the above issue, yet the solutions provided don't seem to help me out.
    Every time that I log on to my mac, Microsoft Word launches.  I have checked the options that permit program launches within the account preferences> login items> users.  Word isn't listed here and therefore there is no action that I can take to stop this from happening.
    Does anyone else have this problem and if so do they have a solution to stop Word from launching at startup?
    Many thanks

    Are you leaving Word open when you shut down? If so, Resume is starting it up.
    Other than that, right-click on the icon in the dock, go to Options, and make sure Open at Login is not checked.

  • Microsoft Word launches automatically at startup

    This is an unusual situation. Most people can't get MS Word to launch or it crashes.
    I have the opposite. When I log into my MacBook Pro, Microsoft Word for Office 2004 launches automatically. This has just started about a month ago and I've had Office 2004 since 2005.
    1. There is no file in "Startup" that would start MS Word
    2. I've deleted the MS Word preferences file several times to combat and that hasn't worked
    3. I've removed all temp files from the Microsoft folder on my username/home --> Documents --> Microsoft folder
    And, I get the following in Console when I log in (an example from July 18th):

    How do I stop MS Word from automatically launching?

    Check System Preferences>Accounts>Login Items. If you don't get it solved here check out the MS forums: http://www.officeformac.com/ProductForums/Word/

  • Microsoft Word launches on startup

    Microsoft Word auto-launches each time the computer is turned on. I'm an Apple rookie: is this a feature or a bug? Thanks.

    You probably have "Open at login" checked in the application icon in the dock or Word is in your startup items. Right click on Word's dock icon when launched and click "Open at login" off. Word should not launch again.

  • I don't want Microsoft Word to automatically launch when I restart/reboot

    Hi All,
    Microsoft Word application automatically launches when I restart/reboot the iMac. How can I fix this?
    Smells like a virus...

    Hi ctconnor;
    Since there are no virus for OS X, I seriously doubt that is what is causing your problem here.
    My suggestion open System Preferences then Accounts followed by Login Items. Once there deselect Microsnot Word.

  • Adding Company Knowledge with OpsMgr 2012 Console - "Failed to launch Microsoft Word"

    Hi everyone!
    I'm trying to add company knowledge using the OpsMgr 2012 console (32-bit) on Windows 7 Ultimate (32-bit) using the guidelines provided at the following link...
    http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/hh212900.aspx
    I'm using Office 2010 Pro Plus SP1 (32-bit) with the .NET Programmability feature and the Microsoft Visual Studio 2005 Tools for Office Second Edition Runtime installed, but I get the dreaded "failed to launch Microsoft Word" error...
    ...any help or guidance would be greatly apprecaited!
    Regards,
    JJ

    Thanks Andres!
    I have confirmed that the following instructions does allow you to use Word 2010 32-bit running on Windows 7 64-bit or Windows Server 2008 R2 to edit company
    knowledge...
    1. Go to the directory where the OpsMgr console is installed (example: C:\Program Files\System Center\Operations Manager 2012\Console )
    2. Make a copy of Microsoft.EnterpriseManagement.Monitoring.Console.exe.config
    3. Edit Microsoft.EnterpriseManagement.Monitoring.Console.exe.config using Administrator rights
    4. Search for “</dependentAssembly>” and remove the “<publisherPolicy apply="no" />” line immediately following the “</dependentAssembly>” line
    Hope this helps!
    Regards,
    JJ
    Well, firstly I have to agree with other people's comments along the lines of "It shouldn't be this hard!", but I can happily say that the solution above (by IM5FOOTNOTHIN)
    worked for me...once I noticed this crucial footnote: "Do this for
    ALL instances of the
    <publisherPolicy apply="no" /> line that immediately follow the </dependentAssembly> line"

  • Can't get Microsoft Word to launch

    I cannot get my microsoft word to launch.  Have used it for 7 years with no problem.

    Do you have a demo version of Office installed? That can cause trouble with running the full version.
    What version of Office is it? Choices that run on PowerPC (pre-2006) iMacs are Office X; Office 2004; Office 2008.
    As Office is not an Apple product, you may get faster help and surely more views by posting in Microsoft's Office:Mac forums here:

  • How do I Launch a Microsoft WORD Document using AciveX from testStand

    Hello All:
    I would like to launch a Word document from within Teststand. I would also like to have the ability to search the document for particular sections of the document. I can not find any sequence file examples that even comes close to demonstrating any of this.
    Thanks...

    Hello Craig,
    I have attached an example that will demonstrate this for you. You may need to change the Word Server to match the version of Word that you have installed. This can be done by right clicking on each ActiveX step and select Specify Module. Under Automation Server, scroll down the list to Microsoft Word... and select it.
    This is primarily an example to demostrate calling Microsoft Word from TestStand. If you require additional functionality from the Microsoft Word ActiveX server then you should refer to the API reference help for Microsoft Word.
    Hope this helps!

  • Launch Microsoft word application inside AIR

    Hi Guys,
    I am stuck up somewhere not able to find the solution to my
    prolbem.Let me explain the problem in detail.
    I working on an Adobe AIR application and I need to launch
    the microsoft word application to open a particular document which
    a user can then modify.
    This word document are some defined documents stored some
    where in system. The user can then modify the document and can
    store that locally in the database.My concern is to launch the
    microsoft word document in my AIR application and then let user do
    the changes to the document and then i will save the document in my
    database as BLOB.
    Is there any good way of doing this.I hope Adobe has taken
    care of such scenarios and there must be some API's or component in
    Flex builder 3 so that i can use that.
    I am hoping with the finger crossed and waiting for a good
    response from Flex people.
    ~ Hstrong

    I am importing Word documents ( in xml format ) into an Air
    application and storing them in a blob in SQLite. When a user
    selects a document, I export it to a file and submit a URLRequest
    to open it. It launches in IE initially (asking if you want to open
    the document), but when IE sees the xml declares it a Word
    document, IE opens Word.
    To load the file to the database:
    //set up and open the database
    var sqlConnection:SQLConnection;
    sqlConnection = new SQLConnection();
    var dbFile:File =
    File.applicationDirectory.resolvePath("cASM_db.db");
    sqlConnection.open(dbFile);
    //open the file, read, and close (note reading bytes with
    readBytes)
    var fileStream : FileStream = new FileStream();
    fileStream.open(asmModel.newTemplate, FileMode.READ);
    var myBlob:ByteArray = new ByteArray();
    fileStream.readBytes(myBlob); //read the object
    fileStream.close();
    //insert the blob into the database (note use of QUOTE
    function to format blob into hex)
    myStmt.sqlConnection = sqlConnection;
    myStmt.text = "Insert into doctype (" +
    "docname_ch, document_bl) " +
    "values (?, QUOTE(?))";
    myStmt.parameters[0] = asmModel.newTemplate.name;
    //docname_ch
    myStmt.parameters[1] = myBlob; //template_bl
    myStmt.execute();
    To unload the file from the database and open:
    //identify the file to be populated and delete if already
    there (note use of File type and resolvePath function)
    curFile = File.applicationStorageDirectory;
    curFile = curFile.resolvePath("view/version_" +
    asmModel.selectedDocument.VERSION_NU + "_" +
    asmModel.selectedDocument.DOCNAME_CH);
    //if it is there, delete it
    if (curFile.exists)
    curFile.deleteFile();
    //open the database connection
    var sqlConnection:SQLConnection;
    sqlConnection = new SQLConnection();
    var dbFile:File =
    File.applicationDirectory.resolvePath("cASM_db.db");
    sqlConnection.open(dbFile);
    //get the document (now in hex string format)
    myStmt.sqlConnection = sqlConnection;
    myStmt.clearParameters();
    myStmt.text = "Select docname_ch, document_bl " +
    "from doctype " +
    "where docname_ch = ?";
    myStmt.parameters[1] = asmModel.selectedDocument.DOCNAME_CH;
    myStmt.execute();
    myResult = myStmt.getResult();
    //now convert the hex string back to a byteArray (note the
    use of a custom toArray function)
    var myBlob:ByteArray = new ByteArray();
    myBlob = toArray(myResult.data[0].DOCUMENT_BL);
    //now write the document to the file
    var fileStream:FileStream = new FileStream();
    fileStream.open(curFile, FileMode.WRITE);
    fileStream.writeBytes(myBlob);
    fileStream.close();
    //now set up the URLRequest
    var request:URLRequest = new
    URLRequest("app-storage:/view/version_" +
    asmModel.selectedDocument.VERSION_NU + "_" +
    asmModel.selectedDocument.DOCNAME_CH);
    var docType:String = request.url.substr(request.url.length -
    4, 3);
    if ((docType != "pdf") ||
    (HTMLLoader.pdfCapability == HTMLPDFCapability.STATUS_OK))
    navigateToURL(request);
    else
    Alert.show ("You need to upgrade Adobe Reader.", "Error");
    trace("PDF cannot be displayed. Error code:",
    HTMLLoader.pdfCapability);
    Here's the custom function toArray:
    public static function toArray(hex:String):ByteArray {
    hex = hex.substring(hex.search("3C3F786D6C"),hex.length - 3);
    var a:ByteArray = new ByteArray;
    //make sure the string has an even number of characters
    if (hex.length&1==1) hex="0"+hex;
    //change each hex pair to a single int (ascii char code)
    // and place the int in the byte array
    for (var i:uint=0;i<hex.length;i+=2) {
    a[i/2] = parseInt(hex.substr(i,2),16);
    //return the byte array
    return a;
    Hope this helps!

  • Microsoft word does not launch because of shared library error

    The application "Word" could not be launched because of a shared library error: "-<Microsoft Word><CarbonLib><CFMPriv_System>"
    that is the message i got when i tried to use microsoft word, how do i fix it?

    See if reinstalling Word fixes it. Otherwise, since Word is not an Apple product, you should consider posting your question on Microsoft's own forums for their Mac products, as they are geared more toward the issue than an Apple forum:

  • Microsoft word frequently crashing, computer running slow

    Hi, I've been having some computer problems lately and am looking for insight.
    I am using a 2.53 ghz MacBook Pro intel core duo.  I am using Word 2008 version 12.1.0.  The computer seems to be running slowly in general, but is having particular problems with microsoft word.  I have included my etrecheck below.  I've already uninstalled virtualbox, so I'm not sure why those kernal extensions are still running.  I also just used disk utility to repair permissions, since it seemed like that was a common suggestion.  Hopefully that will speed things up, but I'm not optimistic.

  • Microsoft Word and Xcel crashing on Yosemite!

    Running MS Office 2011 for MAC - I upgraded to Yosemite soon after it's release and had problems with word and xcel both crashing.  Researched the problem and found duplicate font files were suspect so I cleaned that up and things seemed to be working fine.  Then out of the blue, both word and xcel are crashing again but now they crash without launching through a doc or spreadsheet.  First few lines of the error report below.  Any help would be greatly appreciated!!

    Hello all,
    I recently downloaded a printer driver for an HP LaserJet Printer. Subsequent to downloading the driver, whenever I would like to print in Microsoft Word 2011, and go to the tab File > Print, Microsoft Word immediately crashes. It is notable that when I print by clicking the printer icon on the toolbar, I am able to print just fine with no crashes. This is certainly somehow connected to the downloading of the driver. I've attempt to solve this problem by repairing permissions in disk utility, to no avail. Please Help! Thanks!
