Microsoft Word Permissions problem and crashing application
Hi all,
I am having a problem with saving/accessing Word documents on my Xserve (running 10.4.7). This server is installed in a small organization with about a dozen users. All workstations are using Word 2004 (v11.3). When users login to the server and access a document, quite often the permissions change to read only. Also, Word crashes quite often on these workstations while connected to the server. I've tried giving them each unique UID's and also sharing the same UID with the same results.
This problem doesn't happen with other files created from Adobe apps, etc.
any and all help is greatly appreciated
Never Mind. I figured it out. Apparently, it was saved and I was looking in the wrong place or something. I'm not exactly sure, but I found the pages!

I have Microsoft Word for Apple, and when I send an attachment to an email, it goes as "application/octet-stream", and no one can open it. What can I do to send it as an ordinary word.doc>
You could Zip it.
Cheers, Tom -
how can I use microsoft word, power point and those apps in my new iMac ? i bought this iMac yesterday so am new on tho and i would like to know
If you absolutely must have the Microsoft applications, you can purchase and download them from http://microsoft.com/mac.
Free software suites LibreOffice and OpenOffice offer similar functionality (word processing and spreadsheets).
Or you could do worse than look at Apple's Pages, Numbers and Keynote, which should already be installed in your Mac and can export to Microsoft formats if need be.

When I try and authorise I get this message. The required directory was not found or has a permissions error. Correct this permissions problem and try again, or deauthorize this computer if the permissions cannot be changed. How do I rectify?
iTunes: Missing folder or incorrect permissions may prevent authorization
Mac OS X
Log in to your computer using an administrator account.
In the Finder, choose Go to Folder from the Go menu.
Type: "/Users" (without quotes) and click Go.
If the Shared folder exists
Open Terminal (found in /Applications/Utilities).Warning: This step involves modifying permission settings by entering commands in the Terminal application. Users unfamiliar with Terminal and UNIX-like environments should proceed with caution. The entry of incorrect commands may result in data loss or unusable system software. Improper alteration of permissions can result in reduced system security or exposure of private data. This option requires a non-blank admin password.
Depending on which version of Mac OS X you have, this step will vary:
On Mac OS X v10.5.8 and earlier, type:sudo chmod -R 777 /Users/Shared
On Mac OS X v10.6 or later, type:sudo chmod -R 1777 /Users/Shared
Press Return.
Quit Terminal.
If the Shared folder does not exist
The following steps will recreate the Shared folder if it is missing and ensure that it has been assigned using the correct permissions.

I wrote an 2500 words assignment and saved in Microsoft word 97-2003 and by mistake replaced with another word file. How can i retain my original work?
Hi,
Does this happen to all 97-2003 Word files?
Word 2013 now has lots of updates compared with earlier version of Word, lots of features have been updated. Use Word 2013 to open documents created in earlier versions of Word (Word 97-2003 format), you will probably encounter unexpected problems,
expecially for those heavily formatted files.
We would suggest you to convert your document to the Word 2013 file format, then you will be able to access the new and enhanced features in Word 2013.

I am trying to authorize my computer and I get an error message: The required directory was not found or has a permissions error. Correct this permissions problem and try again, or deauthorize this computer if the permissions cannot be changed. Help?
I used Terminal to change the permissions on the folder in question. I followed the instructions in this article:
iTunes: Missing folder or incorrect permissions may prevent authorization
In my case, the folder was there, so I needed the command to change permissions on the folder, not to create one. I was hesitant to use Terminal b/c I know that if I made an error I could wipe out my hard drive or render my computer unusable. So to be SURE I didn't make an error, I carefully copied the command from that page and *pasted* it into Terminal. Also, before I could do anything in Terminal, I had to go change my admin password (it had been a blank password before and that's not acceptable for making changes in Terminal). I was just super careful when entering my password or doing anything else while Terminal was open (making sure I didn't accidently hit the spacebar or another key, etc.) And it fixed the problem right away.
What was confusing for me was that the iTunes error message said to change permissions in the FINDER, which is what I was trying to do. It didn't mention Terminal. What would really be helpful is if Apple included a link to a page like this in their error message. -
This morning I had a popup on my Windows XP PC stating that the 4.0.1 update was available. I upgraded. now, i receive the following error: We're sorry. Firefox had a problem and crashed. We will try to open your tabs/windows when Firefox restarts. You can submit crash report data, blah blah blah (which i have submitted several)
But, firefox DOES NOT ever open. It just pops back up with that same report window, over and over.It is possible that there is a problem with the files [http://kb.mozillazine.org/sessionstore.js sessionstore.js] and sessionstore.bak in the [http://kb.mozillazine.org/Profile_folder_-_Firefox Profile Folder]
Delete [http://kb.mozillazine.org/sessionstore.js sessionstore.js] and sessionstore.bak in the [http://kb.mozillazine.org/Profile_folder_-_Firefox Profile Folder]
* Help > Troubleshooting Information > Profile Directory: Open Containing Folder
If you see files sessionstore-##.js with a number in the left part of the name like sessionstore-1.js then delete those as well.
Deleting sessionstore.js will cause App Tabs and Tab Groups to get lost, so you will have to create them again (make a note).
See:

I have tried to open firefox multipul times only to receive the error message:
We're Sorry
Firefox had a problem and crashed. We'll try to restore your tabs and windows when it restarts.
To help us diagnose and fix the problem, you can send us a crash report.
When I send the report and try to restart firefox and see that I have several tabs open, but it quickly shuts down again before I can do anything other then glance at it.http://kb.mozillazine.org/Firefox_crashes

do not know what's going on but the Firefox crashing, and is still crashing, and crashing back again ..
This problem is not resolved for a long time 'and I wonder why not fix this problem so far?
These details.
We're Sorry
Firefox had a problem and crashed. We'll try to restore your tabs and windows when it restarts.
To help us diagnose and fix the problem, you can send us a crash report.I was having the same problem.... But I keep forgetting that when you upgrade firefox... or it updates automatically... you need to right click on the firefox start up icon, go into properties, click on the compatibilities tab, and put a check in the "Run This Program As An Administrator" box, then hit apply. Start Firefox, and it should work OK. Problem is...each time you upgrade firefox and/or I think Adobe flash... you need to make sure that box is checked. This is on Firefox 15.0.1 with Adobe Flash 11.4.402.278 all up to date, Windows 7 64bit. If Firefox has Adobe flash add-on, it needs to run in admin mode or it will crash.

Hi,
Firefox worked before, but one time my system crashed. When I rebooted, Firefox won't start anymore. All I got is a pop-up window, saying We're sorry. Firefox had a problem and crashed. We'll try to restore your tabs and windows when it restarts. Problem is it never restarts. When I press Restart Firefox button, I get the same message. I tried to reinstall Firefox, to make a new profile, rebooted the system, nothing works. What can be done ? Thank-you.Of course I checked firefox crashes. I searched and haven't found my problem. I used Firefox 5 when it happened, then, seeing it doesn't work no matter what I do, I upgraded to 6. The same problem. So it's not 5 or 6 related. Computer probably wrote something to hard disk when it crashed and now the file is corrupted and prevents Firefox from starting. I don't know what file (or part of the registry) is. I could erase everything, but that would mean I will lose every Firefox settings and I don't want that. Now I am using Google Chrome to write this. I miss my Firefox. :( What else can I do ?
This is the error I get when I try to start Firefox: -

Can you explain a bit more about what you are trying to do or what you were trying to open? You need to add a lot more details.
Thanks

Launch iTunes
select iTunes Store from the menu on the left side.
sign in via the link on the top right area if you haven't done so already
click the link where you Apple ID email appears, enter your Apple ID password, click View Account, this will take you to a page displaying detailed information about your Apple ID account.
The last item under Apple ID summary should be Computer Authorisations, click Deauthorize All
now reauthorize any computers as needed when the system prompts you.
