Mid-'12 Air freezes after wake up w/ external monitor attached

Every once in awhile, while I have my Air hooked up to an external display with the Air closed, the computer will freeze after attempting to wake up from sleep. I'm able to wake the computer up with my bluetooth trackpad and keyboard, but all that displays is a blue screen on the external monitor. The external monitor is a samsung and I am connecting it through a mini-display to hdmi convertor.

Sorry for taking so long, I had to go Christmas shopping with the family.  Anyway, I tried that, and no gas there, either. I've done a memtest and changed the hibernatemode to 0 using pmset since this post.  So... yeah.  I'm hitting a wall and am willing to bet it's the SSD going out the door.

I've had the MBA and currently own the MBP 2011. I had a similar problem with my MBA. The issue was due to limited memory and having too many apps open. Putting a system into standby requires a significant amount of ram. If you have too much going on when you close the lid.... freeze. Many users were also complaining about their computers freezing and their screens not coming on; the only fix is to hold down the power button....

  • [Solved] System freezes after 10 minutes if no monitor attached

I've got a server machine that has been running Arch for a month now. It has had a problem of constant freezing all the time. At first it seemed completely random but today I noticed the system freezes up exactly after 10.00 minutes of uptime, if there is no monitor plugged into the system. If I unplug the display after ten minutes, the system will run fine as long as I want to (days, weeks) without it. Ten minutes is also the time after which the monitor will go into stand-by mode. Seems like some kind of a power-saving bug? No entries in any log file @ /var/log...
The system runs only basic home network functionalities; it serves as an NFS server, a print server (CUPS) and runs Lighttpd as a web server. It doesn't do Xorg nor has any fancy kernel modules loaded either. The system is up-to-date (stable repos). No custom-built software.
Somewhat sad since I previously ran NetBSD on the server, but it didn't support my printer-scanner (only printer OR scanner, one at a time), then switched to FreeBSD which failed with my new WLAN card, so then turned to Arch that I've ran on desktop for years now (also like the BSD-ness), and then this...

Case closed, the source of trouble was once again kernel mode-setting (I think)... I blacklisted the drm_kms_helper module and some other stuff and that disabled the KMS functionality, and the server now doesn't freeze at any point.

  • I have connected my new Macbook Air to my existing Samsung large external monitor with a VGA adaptor but I can't get the full mac desktop to display. No icons but then websites are coming up. Help!

I have connected my new Macbook Air to my existing Samsung large external monitor with a VGA adaptor but I can't get the full mac desktop to display. No icons but then websites are coming up. Help!  Further info:  I am a complete newbie to Mac.  Had three macs prior to 2000 then four PCs.  Just come back and struggling a bit with the unfamiliarity. On my old PC laptop I could simply switch from the laptop screen to the large external monitor (and back)  with the F4 function key.  While I can get the background image from my MBA to display, that's it.  Until I noticed on the far left of the external monitor, the very edge of one of the web pages I was on.  So Idragged it over to display in the centre.  But that's all that's there.  And now I have gone out of those web pages but they are still displaying on the monitor.  There is some wierd disconnect.  I'm sure it is just a setting thing.  Will keep searching for answer but any advice welcome!

Your dsplay is getting extended onto the external monitor. Chcnage the setting to duplicate it or only display on the external monitor and you should be fine,
Let me know if this worked for you.

  • MacBook Pro won't stay asleep with external monitor attached.  When sleep is selected from the Apple menu the computer will go to sleep only to continually wake up...go back to sleep...wake up...etc. every few seconds.

MacBook Pro won't stay asleep with external monitor attached.  When sleep is selected from the Apple menu the computer will go to sleep only to continually wake up...go back to sleep...wake up...etc. every few seconds.  This only happens when using the external monitor. Does anyone have any suggestions?

Mine does that too. The worst thing is when it goes to sleep, then wakes up and keeps running while the lid is closed and it is wrapped up in a case. I am afraid when the hot weather comes it is going to burn up. I am hoping Apple fixes it in the software or they may have a melted MBP to replace.
Then when I open the lid it is crashed running at fill tilt, pumping out heat to beat the band. I am forced to hold the button down and reboot.
I wiped my hard disk and reinstalled my OS, but it didn't help. I reversed my OS to 10.5.0 and it solved the DVI problem but still won't sleep. This post will probably be deleted by Apple, they did it a few days ago. I just don't know what to do, and I consider myself a real Apple expert. Just hoping you realize you are not the only one.

  • MacBook Air freezing upon wake from sleep

Hello there! Ever since installing Mavericks, my MacBook Air freezes nearly every time I wake it from sleep. Whever I open the lid, it allows me to enter my password, and then it freezes. Other times, it will let me log in, and then whenever I try to use Safari or another application it freezes. It doesn't completely freeze, I get the beachball and everything. What is going on?

    Hello there AustinJGibson,
It sounds like you are having performance issues with Mavericks.
It sounds like you are seeing some performance issues after having installed Mac OS X 10.9.
I want to recommend the troubleshooting information from this article named:
OS X Mavericks: If your Mac runs slowly
    http://support.apple.com/kb/PH13895
If you find your Mac is running slowly, there are a number of potential causes that you can check.
An app you’re using may require more memory than your computer has. To see how much memory your computer has, choose Apple menu > About This Mac. See the documentation that came with the app to find out what it requires. To find out how to increase your computer’s memory, see the documentation that came with it.Find the manual for your Mac
Quit any application that isn’t compatible with your computer. For example, an application may require a different processor or graphics card. See the documentation that came with the application to find out what it requires.
To see what processor your computer has, choose Apple menu > About This Mac.
To see what graphics card your computer has, choose Apple menu > About This Mac, click More Info, and then click Displays.
Your computer’s startup disk may not have enough free disk space. To make disk space available, you can move files to another disk and then delete files you no longer need on the startup disk.Increase disk space
Quit any apps you’re not using.
If none of these suggestions work, you may need to repair your computer’s disk in Disk Utility.Repair a disk
Next I would perform a Safe Boot:

  • Macbook Pro Freezes after wake up from sleep

My Macbook Pro 5,5 with mountian Lion freezes after waking up from sleep. i have 8 GB RAM and did a hardware test wich was passed. I also have a SSD of 240 GB in the optical drive. this is my startup drive. Another HD is my workdrive. The first thing I see is that the Airport does not come back and it seems that is does not wake up. After that the whole finder freezes.
    What can be the problem?

Back up all data immediately as your boot drive may be failing.
If you have more than one user account, these instructions must be carried out as an administrator. I've tested them only with the Safari web browser. If you use another browser, they may not work as described.
Triple-click anywhere in the line below on this page to select it:
    syslog -k Sender kernel -k Message CReq 'Channel t|GPU D|I/O|n Cause: -' | tail | open -ef
Copy the selected text to the Clipboard (command-C).
Launch the Terminal application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Terminal in the icon grid.
Paste into the Terminal window (command-V).
The command may take a noticeable amount of time to run. Wait for a new line ending in a dollar sign (“$”) to appear.
A TextEdit window will open with the output of the command. Normally the command will produce no output, and the window will be empty. If the TextEdit window (not the Terminal window) has anything in it, post it — the text, please, not a screenshot. The title of the TextEdit window doesn't matter, and you don't need to post that.

  • Powerbook and SSD - Freeze after wake up?

    Hi
I installed a Supertalent 32GB DuraDrive ET2 SSD in my PowerBook G4 12" 1,33GHz and now after wake up it freeze. The keyboard and trackpad show no response any more. I have to shut it down or close and open the lid several times.
I read that some SSDs have to be set to "master" by jumper. But this drive don't mention this option the data sheet.
Has anyboody running this drive in an PowerBook?
Any hint to solve this? I tried already a fresh install. 10.3.9, 10.4, 10.4.11 and 10.5 = the same problem.
    Thanks in advance
    bookpower

I tried to contact them. Without a jumper it should be master.
The manual say nothing about but it cames with a jupmer an 4 screws in the package.
So I tried it with the jumper on the first pins too.
    I tried two similar ssd drives in an PB G4  12" 1,0 GHz, PB G4 12" 1,33 GHz and PB G4 17" 1,5 GHz.
On all PB are the trackpad and keyboard are freezing after wakeup. This happens only with autosleep mode. I thried all setings in 10.4.11
If I close the lid or select the hibernation manualy there isn't any problem.
Also I tried to set diferent hibernation modes via the open firmware (write to disk).
Still I can't use the auto sleep settings.
Can I run any protocol to catch what causes this behavior?

  • G50-30 freezes after wake up

    Hello,
    - When I put the laptop in sleep by closing the monitor, if I open the monitor later, it will wake up but the screen (windows 8.1) is freezed.
I can move the mouse, and the keyboard is active (caps and num lock). However none of the controls on windows screen are active (password, shutdown button , etc). I\ll need to keep the power button until it shuts down.
    - If I put the laptop to sleep using the windows shutdown/sleep/restart option, it wakes up without problem.
    - I tried to turn on hybrid sleep, but it made things worse. When waking up the monitor will be black for ever (the hard dribe is working).
    - I have installed the drivers from lenovo website.  What else should I try?
    Thanks for your help.
    Solved!
    Go to Solution.

    hi wmac,
    Welcome to the Lenovo Forums.
From your observation, it seems like there's a process running in the background that's causing Windows to freeze up after waking up from sleep.
    Can you try the following:
    1. Perform a clean boot
         - this method temporarily disables non-microsoft apps in the background that might be causing Windows to freeze after waking up from sleep.
    2. In the Power Options, turn off the HDD Power Saver
        - Link to picture
    3. (Optional) If you have the Lenovo Energy Management, see if you can turn off the HDD Power Saver there too.
        - Link to picture
After doing the above steps, put the machine to sleep by closing the lid then observe.
    Regards

  • USB mouse freezes after wake from sleep.

Since the 10.8.2 update my Logitech USB mouse freezes after waking up the computer from sleep or when it goes into energy save from non use. This also happens to my brand new MBPR. I tries repair permissions and reset the smc. Any suggestions?

I get a frozen mouse (Microsoft Intellimouse Optical) on my 2012 Mac Mini running Mavericks (it did it with Mountain Lion also) when waking from sleep about 75% of the time which works again if I unplug/replug it (light is on and mouse buttons work when it's frozen, but the pointer won't move).  It does this whether I use a built-in USB3 port, a USB2 hub and now also with my new USB3 hub.
However, my 2008 Macbook Pro also has an Intellimouse connected to it when docked and it NEVER freezes when waking from sleep whether using the built-in USB2 port or a Gmyle USB3 card port.  Either way, the mouse wakes fine and it's the SAME MODEL MOUSE and SAME OSX verison.  I have no idea why the inconsistency.  It ***** because "Wake on Network Activity" FINALLY works right here in Mavericks with XBMC on my Mac Mini so there's a perfect opportunity to save some electricity.  I got excited when it woke up two times in a row with 10.9.1 and set up my sleep controls only to find it wouldn't go to sleep with the Energy Savings menu because I have an external USB3.0 3TB media drive connected (at all times).  I finally found out (through more patient testing) that once the drive spun down (possibly on its own power saving timer as I'm not sure the "Shut down hard drives when possible" setting works in Mavericks; it was messed up in Mountain Lion in 10.8.4 and even though 10.8.5 fixed it, I'm not sure Mavericks is using the same code.  It doesn't seem to shut down any faster with or without the setting on and shuts off several minutes after the computer attempts to go to sleep (on a 1 minute test setting; I think WD defaults to 10 minutes in firmware).
Anyway, once that was resolved and I saw it would go to sleep eventually once the drive spun down (it will sleep instantly if I select SLEEP from the Apple menu which I find odd if it's such a big deal that it's connected....), I thought OH BOY!  I'm all set.  Then I woke it from that sleep and found my mouse was frozen again..... :-(  What a PITA to unplug/plug the mouse every time it wakes from sleep.  It's not worth it.  I'll just have to pay the extra few bucks in electricity each month I could have saved to avoid such a freaking nightmare hassle.  Why on God's Green Earth, Apple CANNOT or WILL NOT fix their darn energy savings features is just beyond me.  Instead of spending all their time making horrible horrible ugly icon/GUI updates to iOS and making it slower and slower and slower, why don't they actually fix some darn bugs in OSX for once in their lives.... I'm starting to think I should give Windows another chance I'm so annoyed right now.  But then I think about having to run a malware program and have that program update and Windows software/security updates 3x a day and I think I can just deal with the Mini not sleeping.....
I'd like to know why Apple couldn't figure out those of us with multiple monitors would want a dock on BOTH monitors all the time either (first side-mount docks wouldn't migrate and now in 10.9.1, bottom-mounted docks won't migrate here either, leaving a dock on one monitor all the time and if that's the monitor that is showing full-screen video, you lost your dock completely while the video is playing.  They finally figured out after a full decade that having a menu bar on both screens would be a good idea, but it just didn't occur to them that the same is true of the dock.  How much are they paying these guys?  Too much apparently (or is it too little to attract talented thinkers? Nah, it couldn't be since we give them feedback and they just ignore it).

  • Macmini ( 2 GB RAM) freezes with Leopard when connecting external monitor

    Hello,
I am having problems with Leopard when connecting an external monitor.
When the macbook is connected to an external monitor, the system freezes and after some minutes, it system reboots. Otherwise only switch off works.
With Tiger there was no problem. Neither with less than 2 GB (1GB or 1,25GB).
My macbook has 2GB RAM an the external monitor is a Samsung Syncmaster 24" (HW diagnostig tests have been successful: RAM and other components).
    BR,Jes

Try to resetting the PRAM (Parameter Random Access Memory). Mac OS X: What's stored in PRAM?
I'm using a SyncMaster 940BW and the DVI cable and have no problems like this.

  • MBP Freezes upon display detection when external monitor plugged in

My new MBP (2.16GHz Core2Duo) will freeze up temporarily when I plug in an external monitor (I use a Compaq MV700). This monitor has served my two previous Powerbooks well, so this seems somewhat anomalous.

Is it just this display or all displays? You might want to try resetting PRAM and NVRAM…

  • MacBook Air (mid-2011) is freezing on wake-up. Any help?

I've had this problem for about a month, it seems.  At first, I didn't think anything was really wrong, considering it rarely ever happened.  Now these freezes have become more frequent -- to the point of me having to hard reboot the computer pretty much every time I wake the computer from sleep.
Also, it seems that when I do restart it, there are times where it attempts to boot, but gets to the folder with the flashing question mark on it.  Again, this only happened a few times out of the many times the computer froze, but it's now getting so bad that I meet this screen quite a few times after the initial restart -- causing me to have to power down and restart x amount of times until I can boot into the operating system.  Other times, after extended periods of sleeping, I'm met with the computer's fans running (as it seems to get really hot with whatever it's attempting to do).  Upon opening it, I see the flashing folder with the question mark on it.
So, I started by resetting the PRAM/NVRAM and the SMC.  Neither method worked. I then reinstalled OS X (I'm running Mountain Lion, by the way) earlier today to see if this would solve the problem.  Guess not, since the freezes still seem to be happening. I also ran the Apple Hardware Test to see if it would pick up anything.  I ran both the "quick" and extended tests on it and it didn't pick up anything, so my guess is that it's something in software that's going haywire.
I suppose my suspicions are correct, because I managed to save a report the OS spat out at me a few days ago when this happened, and I've got that at the bottom of the post. Granted, I know this was before the reinstallation, but anything is better than nothing, I suppose.
TL;DR: MacBook's freezing when I wake it up from sleep and I've tried everything to fix it.  Can anyone else offer assistance?

Sorry for taking so long, I had to go Christmas shopping with the family.  Anyway, I tried that, and no gas there, either. I've done a memtest and changed the hibernatemode to 0 using pmset since this post.  So... yeah.  I'm hitting a wall and am willing to bet it's the SSD going out the door.

  • Macbook Air freezes after standby and boots with Questionmark-folder

    Hello Apple Community,
    My Macbook Air 2011
    i5
    4gb ram
    128ssd
    Lion
started acting up recently. After waking it from sleep (on any of the 3 hibernate modes) it freezes(beachball, no reaction) as soon as I use an application.
Adding to that, everytime I boot it needs around 4-6 attempts to boot and not show the questionmark folder.
I did reset NVRAM and SMC, which brought very short relief, but after 2 or 3 boot sequenzes it stopped working again. I then repaired the disk in recovery mode which seemed to fix the boot problem. However, the sleep problem still persisted. I changed the hibernate setting from 2 to 1, because I assumed a harddrive problem. After that though, the mac did not wake at all after sleep and I had to force a restart. After that, the questionmark folder was back...
Does anyone have any input? I really dont know what to do, it seems both RAM and harddrive broke. However, when it boots properly it runs like always, no problems, what so ever.

Time to send it to Apple for repair...

  • MacBook air freezing after OS X Yosemite install

My 2012 MB Air has been freezing several times per day since my install of Yosemite.  Just freezes and I have to hold down the power key until it shuts down.  Happened in Mail and Safari, and just with the finder up.  Getting really annoying and won't be able to use my laptop for work if this keeps up.  Seems to do it more when I have it hooked up to a computer screen via a mini display port HDMI cable than when just using the laptop. Any ideas would be greatly appreciated.

I'm having this issue too. I have an Acer S242HL connected to my 2012 MBA 11 inch. It's really annoying, I might go back to Mavericks soon. When the monitor isn't connected, no freezing at all. When the screen is connected and I let the computer sleep I get a complete lock up when I try to wake it up. Only a full power reset fixes the issue. It happens at least once daily.
