Mid-2009 13" MacBook Pro emits high-frequency noise when engaged for sound

Recently I noticed that when the MacBook Pro activates the sound output device for built-in speakers, a high-pitched whine or noise begins, and does not stop until the card deactivates again.
The sound is not proportional to brightness, hard drive activity, CPU load, or anything else I've been able to try, except for sound output. When I plug in headphones it cuts out when the sound transfers to the headphones (it's on the same slight delay that the sound change is on). This MBP leads a relatively tame life, although it does travel sometimes. I can't figure out what would have started this sound, but I noticed it start within the last month, and I have confirmed that others hear it in the same quiet environment as I hear it in.

Give it two or three more weeks to get below 80% and stay there, then take it to an Apple Store for testing. As long as it's still above 80%, it's going to be considered "within spec," so make sure it's below 80% when you take it in.

  • Is there a way to upgrade a mid 2009 13" Macbook Pro so that it can use a wireless n network?

I have a mid 2009 13" macbook pro, and I live in a share house. The router we are using is very far away from my room and I do not get very good signal strength. However, my phone and ipad, which are newer, and have wireless n capability, are able to get quite good speeds on this network. I think my problem is that my computer only has a wireless a/b/g airport card. I know that it is meant to be compatible with the draft IEEE 802.11n specification but I don't think it is connecting to the network as a wireless n device.
Is there a way for me to upgrade this card? I have seen a number of cards on ebay etc but I cannot find one that matches my needs. Alternatively, is there a way to make my computer join the network as a wireless n device?

I am not sure swapping a wireless card is an easy exercise.. I would not recommend it.
You can hunt up a USB wireless stick that is Mac compatible..
Or you can buy an Apple Express and use it as a wireless bridge. There are plenty of alternative wireless bridges.. you just plug them in by ethernet and use wireless.. depending on the brand of wireless router you have.

  • Mid 2009 13" Macbook Pro Battery died

    Hello,
I was ready to have my MacBook Pro formatted when I realized that it would not change and it now works with the power cord when connected.
How do I know which model/Part number it is? or the information that I need to purchase the battery. I am not currently in the states and I will have to purchase it online. Any recommendations?
    It's a Mid 2009 13" MacBook Pro
    Thank you in advance!

it now ONLY works with the power cord, when connected of course...

  • Mid 2009 13" MacBook Pro wont boot up.

The apple store replaced the cable that went to my hard drive on my mid 2009 13" MacBook Pro.  The hard drive still will not boot so they told me to remove it put it in a box and connect it to another computer and save the files.  I have done that and connected it to my father's MacBook Pro.  I can find the external drive but I don't know what to do next.
My goal is to save the files on his computer then reinstall the hard drive in my computer and start up in restore mode.  Next I will reformat the drive and move the files I placed on my fathers Mac back to mine.
Can anyone help me with where I can get step by step instructions to do this?
    Thanks

I think you mean Office for Mac. In any event, the standard applications will come with the reinstall, like Mail, iTunes, etc. Anything else won't. If you have the original disks the machine came with, the iLife apps should be on there.
I have to say this... I know you probably don't want to spend money on this, but if the data is important, the better way to handle this is to buy another hard drive. They're cheap. I can tell you how to prep the new drive if you don't know how. Then run Migration Assistant when you're done and let it try to pull over all your stuff from the old drive. Once all that is done, you can reformat your old drive and you'll have something to use for backup. You don't say how big your current drive is, but even a 1TB is well under $100 now. The reason I suggest this is because if you miss anything important on your old drive, once you format it it's gone. The way I'm suggesting, you'd be able to make sure you have all you need first.

  • Regza 40" LCD TV emits high frequency noise

A few months ago I was lucky to win this television, a 106 cm Regza HD LCD.
I was very pleased because I could never have afforded it myself, and I am very happy with its performance generally.
What I find however is that it emits a high frequency noise that triggers tinitus to my hearing. (Tinitus is a high pitched squealing noise heard by people who have damaged their ears, sometimes called ringing in the ears).
I guess my hearing is already sensitive through listening to lots of live music over the years, but I think that this noise is excessive.
I figure that a monitor this size is using a fair amount of power and that maybe the power supply could be overworking itself.
The monitor emits this noise at a consistent level even before the sound from the tv show begins.
I am interested to find out what suggestion forum users may have for reducing this background noise?
The monitor is still under warranty as it is only 6 months old.
I wanted to be prepared to discuss it with Toshiba warranty people if forum users can suggest first of all what could be causing the noise, and secondly, possible ways of addressing the issue.
    Thanks petekey4

    Hello Pete
As you can see this is Toshiba computer forum and I don't believe you will find many people here who want to discuss about Toshiba LCD TV.
Anyway, if the TV is new and with valid warranty the best option for you is to contact service people and let them check your new TV.

  • What's wrong with my (mid-2009) 13" Macbook Pro?

Alright, so here's what I know.
My 13" mid-2009 macbook pro laptop is working for about 15 minutes on average before it stops working. When it stops working, all open applications will not close properly if they're requiring to use a save function. Sometimes I'm told that there isn't enough disk space (even though I have more than 100+ GB available) and other times it will tell me that the RAM is totally full and I need to start force closing things to get it to start working (which it never does). At that point, the internet also stops loading pages all together. The fan may also not be functioning properly (but i'm not entirely sure what proper fan fuctionality is) - it doesn't seem likes its working the same way it used to.
The only thing I know for sure is that my battery is completely shot ("REPLACE NOW") and i'm in the process of manually repairing that myself. The only other thing I know is that my charger is sort of on its last limb as well, so I'm also in the process of fixing those things. Is it possible that these two things combined are the source of my problems?
I'm running mountain lion on the computer and I can't figure out how to get apple diagnostics to work. I also don't have any coverage left on apple care and I'm crazy poor, so i'm hoping that these symptoms aren't a death sentance for my computer and that some of you can point me in the right direction.
    Please help!
    - Adam

But the 85W version won't do any harm, so if you have any other MBPs in larger sizes, you might as well get the higher-powered adapter and be able to use it with any of the machines.

  • 512GB SSD for mid-2009 13" MacBook Pro

    Hi all,
I have a 13" mid-2009 MacBook Pro (model ID MacBookPro5,5) with the 128GB SSD. Unfortunately, that SSD is now pretty much full, and I have to keep unloading data and uninstalling applications to at least ensure the minimum amount of swap space.
The SSD rocks, so I don't want to go back to a mechanical disk and would like to update to a 512GB SSD instead.
As far as I'm aware, the potential candidates in that category that might fit are:
    Crucial m4 (~$750)
    Kingston SSDNow (~$750)
    Axiom Signature Max (~$1,150)
    ToshibaTHNS512GG8BB (~$1,000 - $1,200, but hard to come by)
    Apple MC731ZM/A (~$1,400)
The difference between the last two, in my understanding, is that Apple's SSD is Toshiba with custom firmware.
So, there's obviously a huge price difference, and I'd like to go with the cheapest solution that is known to work.
Some people who installed Crucial or Kingston drives reported random beach balls or lock-ups after installing those drives, and that's obviously the last thing I need. I am not even 100% sure whether Apple's $1,400 solution would work in a 2009 MacBook Pro. Supposedly, it's a 2.5" drive in a 3.5" bracket, so theoretically it would fit, and one would hope that with the Apple-specific firmware everything runs right out of the box. But it's really designed for a Mac Pro tower, and I haven't seen anyone online actually confirm that it works.
Any first-hand experiences with 512GB SSDs in mid-2009 MacBook Pros?
    Thanks!

  • Mid 2009 17" MacBook Pro battery shutdown issue when waking from sleep.

My unibody 17" MacBook Pro occasionally shuts down on waking from sleep when it isn't plugged in.
When I open the lid to wake it I can hear the hard drive and fans starting to spool, and then the next second it's off and silent. The laptop doesn't mind being turned on again after it does this and might go a week without doing it again, equally it might do it next time I try and wake it from sleep. It does this regardless of battery charge level.
coconutBattery says the battery still has 86% of its designed capacity, and I haven't noticed anything else untoward regarding battery charging or performance when in use.
So my question is two fold:
    1) Does it sound like the battery's internal processor is malfunctioning, or could it be something else?
    2) If it is the battery's internal processor, will replacing the battery replace the processor, or are they fitted separately (in defference to the 'internal' part of its name)?
    Cheers,
    James
nb. just in case it makes any difference, the laptop is a 17" Mid-2009 MacBook Pro, 2.8GHz Core 2 Duo with 4Gb Ram running OSX 10.7.3

    James
I have had issues when i press the space bar from sleep, sometimes it wakes but others i'm forced to power it on with the power button.
Is this similar to anything you've experianced?
Its so inconsistantly these days, but i'm also connected to an external screen.

  • Mid-2009 13" Macbook Pro HD Upgrade...

    Hello-
Been looking around here and found many suggestions but wanted to specifically ask before purchasing, so...
Mid-2009, Macbook Pro, 13".  Want to upgrade the HD to 1TB.  Suggestions on RPM's 5400 vs. 7200?  Also... when I check my current hard drive it says SATA but when I look around sites like Amazon and New Egg I am seeing SATA in various forms like 3.0 gb/s and 6.0 gb/s -- could someone here be kind enough to explain that to me, and also, explain to me if what I am looking for is SATA period or a specific SATA like 3.0 or 6.0?
Last... any recommendations on a good external enclosure for the HD I'll be pulling out (but intend to use for not only backup, but transfer/migration after the new HD goes in, but in the end as a storage HD)?
    Thanks in advance!!

That cable isn't cheap, so I wouldn't buy it until you see a problem. Your research was good though. Sometimes the SATA cable is marginal, and when an SSD replaces the HD, the added demand kills it. It's not all of them by any means though, so I'd hold off.

Do you know how to copy your old drive to the new one? The easiest way is with an external enclosure and Carbon Copy Cloner. You put your new drive in the enclosure and clone it. Then when you swap the drives your new one looks exactly like your old one. Super Duper is another option, but it doesn't clone the Recovery partition. The external enclosure can then be used for your old hard drive, which gives you an external to use for backup or copies of important stuff.

  • Mid 2009 13" Macbook pro upgrade

    Hi!
I have been using a 13" Macbook pro mid 2009 model since September 2009. It has been upgraded over the years - the HDD from 160 to 500 to 1000gb, the ram from 2 to 8gb (max-ed out).
The thing is, the computer has become drastically slow - startup and opening apps. The ram usage most of the times hovers around 4-5gb and processor usage is around 15-85% so I guess the issue is with the HDD.
Have been doing a lot of research and it seems SSD is the logical choice to go with to improve this. I would also go with the data doubler (china or india make, cheaper and does the job) as I would like to keep my music and images collection with me all the time and using an external disc maybe too slow due to the USB2.0 port.
    Few questions:
I have some apps that start at login (I wanna keep it that way, coz of convenience) so the ssd would yet be quicker? Any feedback from users are welcome
Im considering the Samsung Evo 120gb SSD (which should be adequate for the system files and work documents), any reviews or feedback on how good this drive is? preferably from users?
Connecting a external hdd would be slow over usb 2.0 as compared to connected thru sata 2 (data doubler)?
Having an SSD + HDD would impact the battery life right?
Considering that it is gonna be about 5 years (this September) since I have bought the mac, would paying around 150-200$ be worth it now? Dunno how many OS X updates would support this machine? If I can get atleast 2 more years from this I would be happy? Otherwise I could sell this one for about $600 - $800 (in Bombay) plus put in more money and buy a new system. What are your thoughts?
Any views or thoughts would be more than welcome.
    Cheers!
    Aman

  • My mid 2009, 17inch Macbook Pro will not switch on unless it is physically hot. I have to heat it up with a hairdryer to switch it on.

Hey guys, my macbook doesn't switch on unless it is physically hot. I use a hairdryer to do this (I know it's bad but i have no other option, i'm not looking for a lecture on why it's bad to do this.)
Once it is hot it still takes a long time to boot up because it will seemingly short-out (instantly shut down with blank screen) whilst booting up quite a lot, and at random times.
Resetting the pram and smc seems to help sometimes, but it's hard to judge as the success of the bootup seems totally random.
    Once Ive got past the login screen and it finally boots up it will run fine, other than a few strange bugs that I have experienced;
    - If I highlight a video file and do a quick preview (pressing spacebar), the laptop shorts out and shuts down
    - If I try to record video using the webcam, its shorts out and shuts down (Using webcam on skype is fine)
    - An email i received once had an automatic video playing, which resulted in the laptop doing the same as above
I'm assuming it's a graphics related issue but I'm no expert, video games run fine on it though.
If anyone has any idea as to what the problem/solution could be, please let me know!
Haven't found a single post online that relates to this problem..

Thanks a lot for the reply mate, much appreciated
    Yup its very weird haha
I do hourly backups with time machine.
Havent tried reinstalling OS. Not sure how possible it is because of the booting issue, it's hard to restart without it shorting out.
Not taken it to anyone just yet.

  • Airdrop on mid 2009's macbook pro

    Hello All,
I have a mid 2009 macbook pro and i recently installed the latest OS, Yosemite. based on what i have just read on one of the Apple support sites, that almost the late 2008 macbook pro's are supporting the Airdrop. infact i have the icon on my finder but i don't get to chose whether i can be discoverable or switch from "contacts only" to "everyone". basically want to airdrop from my macbook pro to ipad mini retina.
i wanted to know if my macbook pro doesn't support such Airplay, then why i have it installed on my mac? or should i just re-install the whole OS Yosemite again? please if anyone know, just help me out.
    Thanks Folks
ps) this is the site that says it should be possible.

Your computer supports AirDrop with another Mac, but not with an iOS device.

  • Mid 2009 13" Macbook Pro scroll is choppy after upgrade from 10.6.8

Everything is stock except for a Samsung 840 EVO SSD I installed last year. All applications display the choppy scrolling. I enabled TRIM again on the SSD since 10.9.2 disabled it, however this made no difference. I've been looking everywhere for a solution but no luck so far. The OS I currently have is
    OS X 10.9.2 (13C64).  Any ideas?

I have mid 2012 Macbook Pro, and after the OS X update to form 10.9.1 to 10.9.2, the graphics look really choppy. It concerns almost everything - dock magnification, swiping thorugh spaces, moving windows around the sceen, scrolling in Safari, opening Launch Pad or Mission Control. Restart of the machine did not help. I am really confused about that.

  • Mid 2009 13" MacBook pro mini-dp to Cinema Display screen jumps from blue to desktop

I'm using a kanex brand iAdapt mini-dp to dvi adapter to connect my macbook pro to my 23" cinema display from early 2007, but it seems like the macbook is having trouble recognizing that the display is connected. The screen will go blue for a second, then show the desktop, then go back to blue. it repeats like this for as long as the adapter is plugged in.
I've gotten the screen to connect properly twice, but as soon as I unplug my laptop and try to plug it back in another day, I run into the same issue as before. I've seen other discussions about screen flickering, but this isn't really a flicker. Not sure if anyone else has experienced this, though it seems likely that this has happened before.
    Any solutions? Thanks!

  • Mid 2009 13" macbook pro battery 60watt hours vs 63.5w??

I have a mid 2009 13" mbp, and as they do, the battery has been getting weaker and weaker. Having check the serial codes I  ordered one online which I have fitted.
When I plugged the computer in to charge, the LEDs on the side flashed 5 times ( which Apple indicated means the battery is not charging/fitted).
I opened it back up and realised its the 63.5 watt hours battery I have been sent,  not the 60w.
My question.... can they be used interchangeably or will I need to order a new battery?

Yikes! There are Apple Guys, and there are Apple guys. You need to call back and speak to a different one. I spoke to two different Apple techs about setting up an Airport Express. One was very knowledgeable and answered my questions very clearly. The second one was very ignorant and gave me a lot of incorrect information. Good thing I had already spoken to the first one and knew that it was possible to do what I wanted to do.
If you get another tech who doesn't know anything, ask to speak to someone who does, like a product specialist. Usually if you are more than 1 hour from an Apple Store, they will set you up with a local AASP, which in your case would either be Best Buy or the other AASP.
If no joy, ask to speak to Apple Customer Relations. They may possibly be able to help you with this.
In the meantime, here is a link for troubleshooting MagSafe connectors:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/TS1713
However, it sounds like yours has a problem that is indicative of a faulty adaptor, and you may be able to get it replaced at no cost if Apple determines that the problem is due to a manufacturing defect and not due to damage caused by the user. The way it usually works is that they will charge your credit card and send you a new adaptor. Then you send yours in, and if they determine that it is faulty, then they will refund the credit card charge. This may be the way to replace the power adaptor since you at least have a chance of getting a free replacement.
As for the battery, they should be able to arrange for a battery test at your local AASP. It would be good to know if the battery is actually defective or if its strange behavior is somehow due to the faulty power adaptor. So you want to lay in a good power adaptor and see how it works before replacing the battery.
    Good luck!
