Mid 2009 17" MacBook Pro battery shutdown issue when waking from sleep.

My unibody 17" MacBook Pro occasionally shuts down on waking from sleep when it isn't plugged in.
When I open the lid to wake it I can hear the hard drive and fans starting to spool, and then the next second it's off and silent. The laptop doesn't mind being turned on again after it does this and might go a week without doing it again, equally it might do it next time I try and wake it from sleep. It does this regardless of battery charge level.
coconutBattery says the battery still has 86% of its designed capacity, and I haven't noticed anything else untoward regarding battery charging or performance when in use.
So my question is two fold:
1) Does it sound like the battery's internal processor is malfunctioning, or could it be something else?
2) If it is the battery's internal processor, will replacing the battery replace the processor, or are they fitted separately (in defference to the 'internal' part of its name)?
Cheers,
James
nb. just in case it makes any difference, the laptop is a 17" Mid-2009 MacBook Pro, 2.8GHz Core 2 Duo with 4Gb Ram running OSX 10.7.3

James
I have had issues when i press the space bar from sleep, sometimes it wakes but others i'm forced to power it on with the power button.
Is this similar to anything you've experianced?
Its so inconsistantly these days, but i'm also connected to an external screen.

  • Mid-2012 macbook pro gets kernel panics when waking from sleep

    Hi all,
I got a new mid-2012 Macbook Pro running Lion (10.7.5) at the end of Oct which started kernel panicking pretty much from day one. The kernel panics only occur when the computer is put to sleep and reawaken after more than an hour or so has passed. I get a grey screen that eventually shows text like "Your computer was restarted because of a problem. Please wait a few seconds or press any key to continue" and then the OS boots up again. Bizarrely, this doesn't usually happen if the computer has only been asleep for a short time - i.e. 15 min or less.
Below is the kernel panic log, which seems to suggest there's an issue with the Nvidia GeForce GT 650M graphics card.
Anyone have any idea what the problem is? Advice is much appreciated.

  • Has anyone else noticed that: "The OS X Lion v10.7.3 Update includes Safari 5.1.3 and fixes that: Resolve a Wi-Fi connection issue when waking from sleep" didn't work?

I installed OS X Lion v10.7.3 because of the following claim.
The OS X Lion v10.7.3 Update includes Safari 5.1.3 and fixes that:
Resolve a Wi-Fi connection issue when waking from sleep
It continues to be a real pain having to reconnect to the network each time I wake my MacBook Air from sleep.
Does anyone have a suggestion for the resolution to this problem?

It seems the update fixed old problems for some and caused new problems for others. Sorry to hear you're in the latter group.
Here are some things to try.
    1. Go to System Preferences > Network, and click the gear icon under the network interfaces like so:
Whatever service order you have set, drag Wi-Fi either to the top (assuming it's not already there) or someplace else in the list. Click OK and then Apply. Sleep the system then wake it again to observe any changes.
    2. Click Wi-Fi in the above then click Advanced. Select all the networks your computer has ever joined and delete them with the "-" button. OK then Apply again. Select your network under the AirPort icon to re-join it. Sleep and wake again to see if that did anything.
    3. Try creating a new, temporary user account. Log in under that account to see if its behavior is any different.
You may have done all of these already but perhaps there is something you have not thought of. If nothing helps we may just have to wait a bit longer for Apple to release a fix.

  • Resolve a Wi-Fi connection issue when waking from sleep

    Hi,
In the recent release for Mac OS X Lion 10.7.3 "Resolving a Wi-Fi connection issue when waking from sleep" was supposed to be resolved, not so at my end. Has anyone else encountered the same issue and if so will there be a resolve.
    Thank you

Hello BGreg and thank you for your answer,
I have alreadty read about this solution, and tried it.
I downloaded the 1.2 Go file, and applied it. And repaired permissions.
    Everything went fine.
Unfortunately, it didn't solve the problem.
Meaning that when iMac wakes up, it doen't join my WiFi network.
I have to do it manually.
I don't know what to do : it is very strange because I never had that problem with OS 10.7.2 !
And my network setup has never changed.
    another info :
I noticed that in the network setup screen, when I want to close the little lock to restrain further modifications, it won't close. Weird !
Do you think I should call Apple Assistance ?

  • Mid 2009 13" Macbook Pro Battery died

    Hello,
I was ready to have my MacBook Pro formatted when I realized that it would not change and it now works with the power cord when connected.
How do I know which model/Part number it is? or the information that I need to purchase the battery. I am not currently in the states and I will have to purchase it online. Any recommendations?
    It's a Mid 2009 13" MacBook Pro
    Thank you in advance!

it now ONLY works with the power cord, when connected of course...

  • Mid 2009 13" macbook pro battery 60watt hours vs 63.5w??

I have a mid 2009 13" mbp, and as they do, the battery has been getting weaker and weaker. Having check the serial codes I  ordered one online which I have fitted.
When I plugged the computer in to charge, the LEDs on the side flashed 5 times ( which Apple indicated means the battery is not charging/fitted).
I opened it back up and realised its the 63.5 watt hours battery I have been sent,  not the 60w.
My question.... can they be used interchangeably or will I need to order a new battery?

Yikes! There are Apple Guys, and there are Apple guys. You need to call back and speak to a different one. I spoke to two different Apple techs about setting up an Airport Express. One was very knowledgeable and answered my questions very clearly. The second one was very ignorant and gave me a lot of incorrect information. Good thing I had already spoken to the first one and knew that it was possible to do what I wanted to do.
If you get another tech who doesn't know anything, ask to speak to someone who does, like a product specialist. Usually if you are more than 1 hour from an Apple Store, they will set you up with a local AASP, which in your case would either be Best Buy or the other AASP.
If no joy, ask to speak to Apple Customer Relations. They may possibly be able to help you with this.
In the meantime, here is a link for troubleshooting MagSafe connectors:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/TS1713
However, it sounds like yours has a problem that is indicative of a faulty adaptor, and you may be able to get it replaced at no cost if Apple determines that the problem is due to a manufacturing defect and not due to damage caused by the user. The way it usually works is that they will charge your credit card and send you a new adaptor. Then you send yours in, and if they determine that it is faulty, then they will refund the credit card charge. This may be the way to replace the power adaptor since you at least have a chance of getting a free replacement.
As for the battery, they should be able to arrange for a battery test at your local AASP. It would be good to know if the battery is actually defective or if its strange behavior is somehow due to the faulty power adaptor. So you want to lay in a good power adaptor and see how it works before replacing the battery.
    Good luck!

  • Mid 2009 13" Macbook Pro scroll is choppy after upgrade from 10.6.8

Everything is stock except for a Samsung 840 EVO SSD I installed last year. All applications display the choppy scrolling. I enabled TRIM again on the SSD since 10.9.2 disabled it, however this made no difference. I've been looking everywhere for a solution but no luck so far. The OS I currently have is
    OS X 10.9.2 (13C64).  Any ideas?

I have mid 2012 Macbook Pro, and after the OS X update to form 10.9.1 to 10.9.2, the graphics look really choppy. It concerns almost everything - dock magnification, swiping thorugh spaces, moving windows around the sceen, scrolling in Safari, opening Launch Pad or Mission Control. Restart of the machine did not help. I am really confused about that.

  • Why is my Macbook Pro running so slow when returning from sleep mode?

I got my new Macbook this past Christmas so it is about two months old. I have the 13" Macbook with the standard 4GB of RAM (not sure if that matters), but when I got my mac I downloaded a bunch of games and such which may have slowed it down initially, though I have downloaded OnyX and Appzapper to uninstall apps and clean my computer. Also I have deleted EVERYTHING from "Login Items" which I thought might help. Basically whenever I am done using my computer I just shut the screen, I don't shut it down or actually click "Sleep Mode" so I'm not sure if shutting the screen puts it in "Sleep Mode," but whenever I open my computer back up I get that spinning loading icon when I click on anything on my desktop and it usually takes 5-10 minutes of this super slow loading before I can actually use my computer. Not sure what the deal is but it is clearly super annoying and I'm hoping to find out how to get around this. I have six 2GB sticks of RAM that I am hoping to trade for two 4GB sticks of RAM to speed up my computer but I am not sure if that would even fix my problem. This is my first Macbook, besides my mothers Mac desktop that I have been using for years throughout High School, but I am a windows guy. I consider myself pretty good with computers, not an expert but I can fix 95% of the problems I encounter, but this one has been stumping me! Thanks a million in advance!

    Hello Linc -
I hope you don't mind but I have a similar issue. Might I be able to enlist your assistance with this issue? I've done as you said, and I have copied the approximate range of messages during my most recent incident. What I'm noticing is that my Mac is staying busy even while asleep. I'm concerned about this behavior, hoping you might be able to help debug the situation and set me on a good path to resolution.
Here's my data (I don't know for certain that I grabbed the proper amount or range of data, but hoping this will help):

  • Snow Leopard - Latency issues when waking from sleep

I own two macs ('09 mini and unibody macbook), both of which connect wirelessly to an airport extreme N router. Since upgrading to Snow Leopard I have been dealing with terrible latency issues when the computers wake from sleep. Ping times from local servers increase from around 23ms to 220ms and webpages load slowly. A quick reboot solves the issue. Connecting directly to the airport extreme with a patch cable also solves the latency issue so I know it's just with wireless.
Has anyone else experienced this problem since upgrading and, if so, what are you doing to solve the issue?
Edit: Samples of ping times...before and then after a reboot:

I use Ethernet so I cannot comment but have you tried trashing the airport pref.plist and removed the preferred networks in the network set up in System Preferences and then set up the wifi connection again?
This seems to help with a lot of airport problems on this forum.

  • Issues when waking from sleep.

    Hey everyone,
So I have a 2.2 C2D MBP that I purchased in July 2007, and I'm currently running the most up to date version of Leopard on it. Ever since the 10.5.2 update however -- or just after it -- I've noticed that about 50% of the time that I wake my computer from sleep mode (after closing the screen) the screen just stays blank, and does nothing. If I press the power button, nothing, if i push any keys, nothing... Sometimes after about one or two minutes it may come on, but I've never had such a long delay occur when waking it up from sleep mode; I just hope its just a software issue and not a hardware one.
Does anybody know why this may be happening and possibly how to fix it?

Everyone please ignore this thread, I just noticed a similar thread just underneith it.

  • Having window location issues when waking from sleep

Since upgrading to Mavericks, sometimes when my Mini wakes from sleep the application windows are located off screen. At first I would quit and reopen most of the applications affected (especially FileMaker), but I find I can bring the windows back within view by going to Displays in System Preferences, changing the rotation, then cancelling after the redraw. My monitor is a BenQ GW2450H, but it doesn't seem like this is a monitor issue (no problems in System 10.7).

Please read this whole message before doing anything.
This procedure is a test, not a solution. Don’t be disappointed when you find that nothing has changed after you complete it.
    Step 1
The purpose of this step is to determine whether the problem is localized to your user account.
Enable guest logins* and log in as Guest. Don't use the Safari-only “Guest User” login created by “Find My Mac.”
While logged in as Guest, you won’t have access to any of your personal files or settings. Applications will behave as if you were running them for the first time. Don’t be alarmed by this; it’s normal. If you need any passwords or other personal data in order to complete the test, memorize, print, or write them down before you begin.
Test while logged in as Guest. Same problem?
After testing, log out of the guest account and, in your own account, disable it if you wish. Any files you created in the guest account will be deleted automatically when you log out of it.
*Note: If you’ve activated “Find My Mac” or FileVault, then you can’t enable the Guest account. The “Guest User” login created by “Find My Mac” is not the same. Create a new account in which to test, and delete it, including its home folder, after testing.
    Step 2
The purpose of this step is to determine whether the problem is caused by third-party system modifications that load automatically at startup or login, by a peripheral device, by a font conflict, or by corruption of certain system caches.
Disconnect all wired peripherals except those needed for the test, and remove all aftermarket expansion cards. Boot in safe mode and log in to the account with the problem. Note: If FileVault is enabled on some models, or if a firmware password is set, or if the boot volume is a software RAID, you can’t do this. Ask for further instructions.
Safe mode is much slower to boot and run than normal, and some things won’t work at all, including sound output and Wi-Fi on certain models.  The next normal boot may also be somewhat slow.
The login screen appears even if you usually log in automatically. You must know your login password in order to log in. If you’ve forgotten the password, you will need to reset it before you begin.
Test while in safe mode. Same problem?
After testing, reboot as usual (i.e., not in safe mode) and verify that you still have the problem. Post the results of steps 1 and 2.

  • Mid 2009 13" Macbook Pro battery

just found i've got a " service battery" notice in the drop menu from the battery icon. Looked around and its likley due to my high use/cycle count currently at 430.
checked the store and im guessing the fact they have none for the alum unibody and specs show it as
1)"built it" im out of luck on getting one and doing it myself??
    2) and anyone have an idea on cost?+service change?
im expecting about $130 for the battery since thats what the others are on the store.
as for install im FORCED to take it to Bestbuy since the nearest Apple Store is 3+ hours away...
and one more thing i've got problems with the magsafe also. same problem line apple has been replacing others for: fraying/charge problems
    3) Anyone know if bestbuy does the exchange?

    Good luck!

  • Clamshell mode issue when waking from sleep

Just got an rMBP and hooked it up to a ViewSonic monitor via DVI-thunderbolt to use in clamshell/desktop mode in my home office.
All good – except that whenever I wake the MBP from sleep, the ViewSonic just shows snow for about 30 secs to 1 min before going to mac desktop. A couple times it went 2-3 mins and I finally gave up and opened MBP to get it going.
Is this sort of delay normal? It’s basically just an annoyance, but wondered if anyone else experienced and knows of any fix….thnx!

There is one setting to "Put the computer to sleep when inactive for:"
Then there is separate setting to "Put the display(s) to sleep when the computer is inactive for:"
It originally sounded like you only had the display set to sleep. However if your whole system is going to sleep that may explain the the refreshing of the display when the system wakes up. It may not happen every time but I think it's normal.

  • Is there a way to upgrade a mid 2009 13" Macbook Pro so that it can use a wireless n network?

I have a mid 2009 13" macbook pro, and I live in a share house. The router we are using is very far away from my room and I do not get very good signal strength. However, my phone and ipad, which are newer, and have wireless n capability, are able to get quite good speeds on this network. I think my problem is that my computer only has a wireless a/b/g airport card. I know that it is meant to be compatible with the draft IEEE 802.11n specification but I don't think it is connecting to the network as a wireless n device.
Is there a way for me to upgrade this card? I have seen a number of cards on ebay etc but I cannot find one that matches my needs. Alternatively, is there a way to make my computer join the network as a wireless n device?

I am not sure swapping a wireless card is an easy exercise.. I would not recommend it.
You can hunt up a USB wireless stick that is Mac compatible..
Or you can buy an Apple Express and use it as a wireless bridge. There are plenty of alternative wireless bridges.. you just plug them in by ethernet and use wireless.. depending on the brand of wireless router you have.

  • Mid 2009 13" MacBook Pro wont boot up.

The apple store replaced the cable that went to my hard drive on my mid 2009 13" MacBook Pro.  The hard drive still will not boot so they told me to remove it put it in a box and connect it to another computer and save the files.  I have done that and connected it to my father's MacBook Pro.  I can find the external drive but I don't know what to do next.
My goal is to save the files on his computer then reinstall the hard drive in my computer and start up in restore mode.  Next I will reformat the drive and move the files I placed on my fathers Mac back to mine.
Can anyone help me with where I can get step by step instructions to do this?
    Thanks

I think you mean Office for Mac. In any event, the standard applications will come with the reinstall, like Mail, iTunes, etc. Anything else won't. If you have the original disks the machine came with, the iLife apps should be on there.
I have to say this... I know you probably don't want to spend money on this, but if the data is important, the better way to handle this is to buy another hard drive. They're cheap. I can tell you how to prep the new drive if you don't know how. Then run Migration Assistant when you're done and let it try to pull over all your stuff from the old drive. Once all that is done, you can reformat your old drive and you'll have something to use for backup. You don't say how big your current drive is, but even a 1TB is well under $100 now. The reason I suggest this is because if you miss anything important on your old drive, once you format it it's gone. The way I'm suggesting, you'd be able to make sure you have all you need first.
