Mid 2010 MacBook Pro - Logic Board Failure - Advice Needed

Hello all,
I could really use some advice.
I have a MacBook Pro that I bought through the Apple Online Store roughly around September of 2010. A couple of weeks after buying it I had to take it to the Apple Store in London's White City due to a keyboard backlight issue. About a week later I collected the MBP and the following day had to take it back as the technician that worked on it had not tightened the display brackets up leaving it a bit floppy.
Now I have serious issues with it. Recently the MacBook has been suffering from freezing up, booting issues and the display randomly shutting off (going black, no pixelating or anything) to the point the machine has become unusable. 2 days ago I took the MBP along to an appointment at the Genius Bar at London's Regent Street Apple Store, I also took along a copy of an Apple knowledge base article regarding this very issue. The knowledge base suggests that on any OS below Mountain Lion a software update is required, for ML or Mavericks an appointment with a service agent is required. During the appointment the Mac Genius suggested it may be a software issue, they would wipe the system and re-install Mavericks then test the machine, I told him I had done this a few days earlier but I guess they have to follow process. He then went on to suggest the display may be faulty, I told him I had no reason to suspect that was the case and moved the screen forwards and backwards at varying speeds without a glimmer of a flicker. At this point after reading about this issue on various forums prior to the appointment I felt that the guy was trying to imply anything maybe at fault but deliberately steering clear of suggesting the logic board, this is just my gut feeling however and i'm perfectly capable of being wrong but I do not feel I am! Anyhow I then proceeded to demonstrate the issue whilst the machine was on, warmed up and right in front of him. I gently and slightly lifted the front left corner of the machine a little way off of the counter, just enough to obviously flex the logic board by a minuscule amount and immediately the display went into a frenzy of going off and on.
So I left the MBP with them for the guys to do their thing. Today I received the following email:
"We have attempted to repair your machine by erasing all the data off your machine and reinstalling the latest operating system, Mavericks. This has not resolved the issue of the screen going black when in use. The issue has occurred again for a very short and brief few times once the machine had fully turned on and after testing the issue did not appear again.
I'm sure the issue will more likely occur again, to repair the machine we would need to replace a part known as the main logic board. This repair is very expensive and will come roughly to £418.80."
£418.80 GBP, that's pretty much 25% of the original purchase price of the machine new, a Premium 'Pro' labelled machine just 3 years old at that. I cannot possibly afford to pay for the repair. I really despair.
This MBP has done no work hard enough for it to get stressed. It is used for some web surfing, online shopping, email, online flash based games but mostly for my kids homework. It has spent it's entire life on a table in our living room with the exception of it's Genius Bar trips.
I love Apple products, it's why as a family we own so many off them. Too many to list on a public forum as I don't want would be burglars inviting themselves around sometime. This issue has tainted my perception of both Apple and it's products. Not so much because of the fault, machines become faulty. No because it's a premium machine that cost me £2100 new and is little more than a paperweight at present just 3 years down the line. Some part of me if i'm honest was wishing but more than that expecting a company like Apple to say along the lines of "This has happened, it shouldn't have and will be repaired at no charge". There are many people suffering this kind of problem with this model and the existence of the knowledge base article must mean Apple knows it too. Just 3 years, £300 PCs last longer than that i'm sure. It does seem to be a very short lifespan for such a high end machine.
My apologies for droning on but I can neither afford the repair or do without the computer, my son is in his final GCSE year at school and my daughter in her pre GCSE year so a computer is critical for school homework research etc. I just do not know how to move forward, I haven't even picked the machine up yet!
This isn't a stomping Apple, one man crusade. I just need my MacBook fixed.
If anyone has had this problem and had it satisfactory resolved, knows who to speak to that may help resolve the issue please let me know.
Any other advice will be more than welcome.

Ive repaired 1000s of laptops over the years (translate: diagnose and replace parts).
Its not that old, Ive owned 100s of laptops (most were free) ....some I still have are nearly 13 years old and still perfect, ....some extremely expensive ones died in under a year.
other than becoming obsolete at some point, there isnt really any "will spoil on" data like Milk for solid state computer parts, ....alas.
You can have a $5000 laptop die in 4 months, and a junker one keep kicking after 10 years.... Ive seen that firsthand countless times.
Common logic dictates that "very expensive = long life" in computers,..... but all the repair people will tell you just the opposite.
I know you have a gripe, I get that all too well honestly .

  • 13 Inch Macbook Pro Logic Board Failure

I've my 13 inch macbook pro (mid 2010) working fine till last week and all of a sudden it gone off while i'am working with it.
When i tried it it switch it on, it is not coming up back. No response at all, when i press the power button even the brething light is not coming up.
No issue with the battery as it is fully charged and even the MagSafe is connected.
I gave it to Apple authorised service center for repair, they initially asked 1000+ buck (INR) for checking it and after checking it i got a response that it is a logic board issue no power is being send to Logic board and it needs an expensive replacement of Rs 33,600.
Not sure why this logic board can't be repaired rather than an expensive replacement..??? Are they doing service or only replacements?
Bought it for 80k and spending another 35k in 3 years is the most annoying thing   - a brand new windows laptop costs 35k
    Thanks,
    Subbu

Apple or an AASP do not "service" logic boards...everything is soldered in place...they replace them.

  • Macbook Pro Logic board failure

    Hi,
On 07 July 2013 I bought a new Macbook Pro from a local iStore. about 1 year later, the monitor failed with a black screen and I submitted the unit for repairs, as it was still under warrantee. The Apple Core Group noted that they had replaced the screen and the main logic board as this was the issue. On receiving the unit back, I noticed that the built-in microphone does not function. This was not a problem for me at the time as I never used the microphone and left it. Fast forward another year and a half, I now have a bigger need for the microphone to function for conference calls etc. About two and a half weeks ago I submitted the unit in for repairs at the same iStore, which was sent away again to the Core Group who deals with repairs on Apple products.
With communications in the past two weeks, they have claimed that the unit does not want to boot up anymore while running diagnostics and eventually told me that the main logic board has failed, and thus the reason it is not working anymore. Today the Core Group sent me a quote of R9200 (+- $750) since my unit is out of warrantee.
This doesnt sound like a valid reason and what am I supposed to do in this case? Am I responsible for dishing out $750 since I left the Macbook in fully working order when I handed it in to Apple Support? Why would the main logic board fail again after it was replaced about a year and a half ago.
    Any advice is much appreciated.

There are no widespread hardware failures endemic to that model. Lacking any indication to the contrary, the repair facility itself begins to look suspicious. Of course I'm biased since all I have is the information you provided.
... the boot failed while running diagnostics
Obviously it means nothing in the end, but it is commonly accepted that when a repair facility accepts an item for repair, the item remains in their care from that moment until you accept it from them, after which it is returned to your care. The fact it failed while in their care does not appear to be in dispute. You have no way of determining how that occurred, nor should it be your responsibility to determine it. They could have dunked it in water for all you know. How is that your responsibility?
How do you prove that in any case?
Recording the logic board's serial number and comparing it to the one returned to you is one way to ensure it hasn't been swapped with a defective one, but even that can be circumvented if the repair facility is motivated enough to modify it. Anyway, my sympathies are all I can offer.

  • I have a mid 2010 macbook pro 15" and recently it started crashing so I took it to my local Apple store to have it looked into and they told me its a graphics card issue requiring the replacement of the logic board at a cost to me of $340.

I took my laptop to my local Apple store to have the problem diagnosed and they told me the problem lies in the grpahics card which will require the replacement of the entire logic board at a cost to me of $340.
after that I did some research on the topic and found that this was a massive problem on this model of macbook pro and Apple never issued a recall to fix the issue, are there any class action suits in this category currently underway? if so how can I join?

I also have a mid-2010 Macbook Pro 15". Also, I had paid $100 for Apple Developer account and I can't even use Xcode or Unity3D to work on my game because the moment I write a line of code, my computer crashes. Scratch that, I used to have an Apple Developer account (I let it expire a couple of weeks ago). It hasn't been of much use since my Macbook Pro crashes 15 times a day.\
A month after buying a mid-2010 Macbook Pro 15" directly from Apple, it began to crash. At first, I assumed it was my fault as I had been messing around with Bootcamp and doing other heavy stuff, but I quickly learned it would randomly decide to shutdown regardless of the task at hand. I was very busy at the time. I was a fledgling teacher in France, and I hardly had any time, or money, to put toward a 84 euro train ticket to Paris. Also, OS X updates were around the corner (Lion, Mountain Lion), so I held out, hoping the issue would be resolved with the updates.
During my investigation of the issue, I did find the TS4088 article. It recommended I install some updates, and then it described a problem that seemed similar to my own, but the order in which the problems occured, as described in the TS4088 article, did not follow the same pattern that my computer had been experiencing–there was no gray or black screen after the restart warning message when my mac crashed. The first time I found TS4088 on Apple's Support page (at a time when their product recalls were easier to locate before they redesigned their website), it was a couple of months after I had bought the computer. I reasoned that my Macbook Pro must not be suffering from the same issues as I had never seen the video freeze or go black before seeing a restart message. The restart warning message is the last thing I saw, no loss of video or black(or gray) screen afterwards. My computer would simply start to boot up again.
About two years after buying the computer, and suffering from about 3 GPU panics a day, I searched for the TS4088 article again, wondering if I had misread it, and that maybe the issues described in the article were the same issues I was experiencing. This time I could not find the TS4088 article on Apple's Website. I searched over and over again, but it was nowhere to be found. I assumed that issue had been resolved and the article removed. Now after three years of using a faulty, unreliable computer, I was feeling like a schmuck. I searched again on Apple's website to find the TS4088 article, or any new ones that outlined my very apparent GPU issues, but I had no luck. I circled Apple's website over and over and could not find that article. It was only through a link other frustrated mid-2010 Macbook Pro owners had posted on some other website that I found the link to TS4088, also learning that the forum's users were experiencing my same problems.
Based on the language Apple used to describe the problem, I did not reason that I was suffering the same issue. Here's what happens when my computer crashes:
         • The computer seems to shut down. The display turns off, the fans stop spinning
         • The message "Your computer was restarted because of a problem . . . Press any key to restart" is displayed.
         • I press any key, the computer restarts, I wait for next crash to interrupt my work
    Excerpt from TS4088
    "Symptoms
Apple has determined that a small number of MacBook Pro (15-inch, Mid 2010) computers may intermittently freeze or stop displaying video on the built-in display or on an external display connected to the MacBook Pro. In this situation, you may also see a restart warning message before the video is lost or the display turns black or gray."
My computer never displays a restart message before the video is lost or display turns black. My Macbook Pro mid 2010 loses the picture on the display, and less than a second after that is the restart warning displayed. The video would never freeze or stop playing, rather the whole computer just dumped all of its processes and displayed a warning message asking me to press any key to restart.
My issues with this problem are the following:
•The problems described in TS4088 do not accurately reflect what users are experiencing. TS4088 is misleading in this respect.
•The article TS4088 was not easy to find on Apple's website. It seemed to have moved to an obscure, impossible-to-find location that could only be found thanks to the great number of other Mac users who are experiencing the same problem.
This issue hasn't been managed dutifully. I'm annoyed to have sunk money into a developer account. I'm annoyed that I sunk money into an expensive product that does not work. I'm annoyed that the description of the issue afflicting mid 2010 Macbook Pros was inaccurately and misleadingly described and that links to the TS4088 article disappeared from Apple's website when I could have truly benefitted from them. I am especially annoyed that my life in graphic design, web development, and iOS development has stagnated for several months as my computer crashes some 15 times a day. I am, however, pleased with the speed at which a Mac can boot up.

  • Mid-2010 Macbook Pro Kernel Panic

Hi, I have a Mid-2010 MacBook pro (2.66 GHz Core i7) running OSX 10.6.8  that has been frequently crashing/kernel panic recently. I took my computer into the Apple store, and they ran extended diagnostics on it, finding nothing. However, they told me that the problems sounded like a logic board failure, and sent it to get it repaired. They quoted me the flat-rate $310 repair fee, because I had purchased my MacBook 3 years and 2 weeks ago. Is there nothing else I can do, or should I still fight to get it repaired free of charge?
Apple says that you can only get the logic board replaced for free if your computer was purchased less than 3 years ago, so you have to pay for the logic board. However, you can consider lucky: logic boards are much more expensive than the cost of the one that Apple is going to install

  • Mid 2010 Macbook Pro +1000 Euro repair costs (no external marks)

    Hello together,
I am looking out for some advise. My mid 2010 Macbook Pro 15inch with an anti glare display just got a new logic board. I paid more than 500 Euro at a Premium Reseller called mStore in Kiel (Germany) to replace it, because the display stayed black after booting. My Macbook didn't even have a single external mark or scratch on the housing. I accepted it and said to myself if it is working again, it is alright. But less than two month later a vertical line is drawing from the top frame to the bottom (see photo). The line is narrow, it is just one pixel, but it is really annoying because it is always in sight. I went to the same reseller and asked what to do, they recommend a second repair attempt for again 500 Euro. In less then two month I cannot afford +1000 Euro for a laptop with an actual value of about 1100 Euro.
What is the best thing to do now?
I am really disappointed by Apple's quality. I am 24 years old and everybody in my family is using Apple computers since I can think back. The first time I could call a Mac my own was when I was 13.
When I graduated from school I was 19 and worked in a hospital to finance a new iBook G4. I had this one for about four years and it has been traveling with me through New Zealand and Asia for more than a year. I never had any issue with it, even when I dropped it from the top bank in a dormitory. It is still alive and working fine.
When I started studying the time came to buy an Intel Mac (15'' Macbook Pro, anti glare) and again I was very happy with the quality. I have also been a huge advocate for Apple products and was confidently suggesting them to friends and family. But today I feel disappointed by the brand.
    Best
    Marco

I had the same problem on a display MBP 15" in 2010, and it is a  display problem recognised by Apple.
It was covered by the warranty.
If you do nothing, the number of vertical pixel lines will increase over  time.
Good that Apple helped you out of this problem.

  • Mid 2010 MacBook Pro 15in i7 keeps crashing

This problem has been going on for a long time now where my Mid 2010 MacBook Pro 15in w/ i7 processer keeps crashing at random times. No data is lost but it just keeps shutting down and restarting. I was thinking it may be the logic board or motherboard, not sure if they are the same thing. I get this message when I report the problem:

What can I do about this? Is there a part I need to replace or should I just sell this and buy a new Mac?

It's a well documented problem with that model. Your graphics circuit is failing. There was a program in place to replace the motherboard for 3 years from the date of purchase, though some folks have gotten help beyond that time frame.

I've googled and read all sorts of things saying remove everything from Login Items, it still happens. Everything I've tried has done nothing. Just in case it helps, here is my latest kernel panic log from Console:

It looks as if you may have the dreaded 'bad GPU' that shipped with some versions of the 2010 model. See - http://support.apple.com/kb/TS4088?viewlocale=en_US&locale=en_US.
Use the "Contact" Apple techs link and see if your model may be one affected. If it is, you'll qualify for a free logic board replacement from Apple.
    Good luck,
    Clinton

  • Mid-2010 Macbook pro repeated crashes after service, HELP!

I have a mid-2010 Macbook pro with the i7 and 8gb of crucial ram. I have had this problem for months and finally took it into the authorized Mac repair center where I live. The nearest apple store is 4 hours away. He put it through 3 days of testing and found no problems with any hardware, including the RAM. I can't find my apple ram so I haven't tried to run my laptop with that. Anyway, we did a HD wipe and restored from the recovery drive to see if that was the issue. No luck. The logic board also passed all tests. The computer crashes with any amount of stress (garageband, iPhoto, or simply surfing the web with an external display) and is impossible to get work done. I'll paste the crash report below. I would love to try to find another solution!
    Thanks all,
    Brian

  • Mid-2010 Macbook Pro Crashes Often (I know)...

Hi. My Mid 2010 Macbook Pro keeps crashing. Possibly related to the installation of OS X Mavericks, but from the other threads it sounds like a RAM or logic board issue. I would appreciate the help. Here is the panic log:

You have the MacBookPro6,2, the Edsel of Macs. It may have the logic-board defect that was covered by this recall.
Make a "Genius" appointment at an Apple Store, or go to another authorized service provider, to have the machine tested. The routine hardware diagnostics used by service providers do not detect the fault. There is a specific test for this issue that Apple calls "VST" (for "Video Switching Test.") Ask for it. A "Failed" result means that the fault is present. However, according to reports, some units may pass the test, and yet still be deemed eligible for repair under the program. Your experience may vary.
Print the first page of the panic report, if any, and the support page linked above, and bring them with you.
Note that the recall only applies within three years of purchase. After that, Apple may refuse the service. In that case, you may be quoted a price of about $300 (in the U.S.) for a "depot repair," which involves shipping the unit to a central repair facility and takes about two weeks. For that flat fee, anything found wrong with it should be fixed, not just the logic board.
The model was discontinued on February 24, 2011, so the recall has nominally ended. Some units may have been sold after that date by Apple as refurbished, or by resellers as new, and they might still be covered.
Some owners report that their unit was repaired under the program after the deadline had passed. Others report that the repair was covered by the extended warranty from a credit-card issuer. Again, your experience may vary.
Sometimes the replacement part is also defective, so be prepared for that possibility.
If it's too late for your unit to be repaired under the program, and you don't want to pay for a new logic board, you may be able to stop the panics by disabling automatic graphics switching. To use the discrete graphics processor, you'll need a  third-party utility to switch to it manually.
Often the problems start after a system upgrade. If the upgrade was recent, and you have backups, then you can revert to a previous OS X version.
If you're dissatisfied with Apple's response, please keep in mind that no one here represents the company or can help with customer-service issues.
Back up all data on the internal drive(s) before you hand over your computer to anyone. If privacy is a concern, erase the data partition(s) with the option to write zeros* (do this only if you have at least two complete, independent backups, and you know how to restore to an empty drive from any of them.) Don’t erase the recovery partition, if present.
*An SSD doesn't need to be zeroed.

  • Mid 2010 MacBook Pro i7 - Crashing - Low $ - HEELLPP

My mid 2010 Macbook pro 15" with i7 running 10.85 has recently started crashing. I've really only used it extensively for the last 2 years so it's been doing quite well but has now started black screening then rebooting with no - at least not apparent to the user - sequence of events.
My partner isn't working (car hit and run) so budget is low and I'm currently pushing myself on Team Treehouse to learn coding to improve my job prospects and my salary so need the laptop right now.
Is the below the standard logic board replacement that I've found many have on forum? is it the video card? Just not sure which way to head and not in the budget for a totally new laptop though would be confident enough with the help of (PC) husband to upgrade hard drive or other components. OR am I best to take it to the Apple store for a genius assessment?
    Any help greatly appreciated.
    Kindest,
    Kitty

  • Mid 2010 macbook pro panic shutdown

My mid 2010 Macbook pro is experiencing an increasing number of black screen shut downs.. 3 or 4 a day currently.
Often this occurs when the keyboard or mouse is touched after it has been idle for a short period, and sometimes mid use.
Ive tried running without any peripherals  to no effect and carried out basic disc doctor / onyx procedures to no lasting effect.
Any interpretation of this would be a great help.
Here is a crash report ..
    thx

You have the MacBookPro6,2—the Edsel of Macs.
If you decide to pay for a new logic board, test thoroughly during the 90-day warranty period on the repair. Some owners have reported that they went through as many as three replacement boards before getting one that worked.
If it's too late for your unit to be repaired free of charge, and you don't want to pay for the service, you may (or may not) be able to stop the panics by disabling automatic graphics switching. To use the discrete graphics processor, you'll need a third-party utility to switch to it manually.
Often the problems start after an OS upgrade.

  • Mid 2010 Macbook Pro 13" sudden shutdown with no errors

I have a mid 2010 Macbook Pro 13" 2.66 GHz with 2x4GB of Crucial RAM, the original 320GB HDD and running OS X 10.10.1; however, this problem has already been bugging me back when I had Mavericks. For about a year and a half now my laptop would suddenly shutdown with a click sound. It first only did it about once every couple of weeks but now it'll sometimes do it within five minutes of turning it on. Sometimes it'll last a couple hours, and other times it'll last 5 seconds. It's not temperature related, because it'll do it whether it has just been turned on or been on for over an hour. I reset the PRAM and SMC, but that didn't fix it. I ran tests with Disk Utility and it said there were some issues with the disk. Disk Utility wasn't able to do it, so I repaired it with fsck in Single User Mode. I thought this was finally going to work, but within 15 minutes it shut down again. Finally I ran the Apple Hardware Test and put it through the extensive test. After it was done running, it said that everything was ok. So according to that there should be nothing wrong with the internal hardware. I would check in the console logs, and it would give me -2 and -60 for "Previous shutdown cause: ". At this point I have no idea what could be causing the problems.

I took it in to the Genius Bar over the weekend, and they ran their tests on it. It passed with flying colors; including the battery, which is doing quite well for its age. So with that being said, they said that the problem is probably with the logic board since everything else came back ok. At this point, I am better off investing in a new computer since a new logic board goes for $400 without labor, and that is if the problem really is only with the logic board since that was their best guess, not definitive.

  • My Mid 2010 MacBook Pro will not boot

My Mid 2010 MacBook Pro will not boot regularly, in safe mode, in recovery mode or from original OS DVD. Is this the logic board?
I've tried resetting the SMC and pram numerous times and even tried switching out hdd's to try and do a clean install on a new hdd.
If I attempt to boot regularly or from recovery drive the grey apple logo appears for a period before the screen goes black and the power LED operates as though in 'sleep' mode. I'm unable to wake it from this state and the same applies to booting in safe mode.
When attempting to boot from the OS DVD that was originally packed with the computer it just freezes on the language select option, this occurs with the other hdd's I have attempted to use.
Any other suggestions to get it working? I fear the logic board has gone and that the repair won't be worth the money.
    Thank you in advance.

    Hi JRC8.8,
It sounds like you have been on the right track in trying to troubleshoot this issue. You may want to see if your MacBook Pro will boot directly to the Apple Hardware Test, as outlined in the following article:
