Mid-2010 Macbook Pro, suddenly dying - blank screen, no response.
Hi there,
So My Macbook Pro has developed this habit of just switching off the screen and appears to become unresponsive. Complete hard power down and reboot seems to be the only way to get the machine back.
At first I though it was a battery problem, with the majority of incidents occuring either when the Macbook was charging or on battery. However now the problem has become much more frequent and occurs even when the battery is full.
Here is the report that I get when I reboot:

I get the sense from the above that it might be a problem with my graphics card, however I'm not going to rush out and buy a new one untill I'm fairly certian of that.
Any help would be highly appreciated!
If you boot into Safe Mode does it then work OK? You have a lot of third-party extensions installed including a non-current version of Parallels. Safe mode will disable them until you boot normally. This way you can determine if the problem may be related to the third-party software.

Mid-2010 Macbook Pro - Sudden Issues everywhere
Ok, so I've got a Mid-2010 Macbook Pro and just before Christmas all of a sudden issues just popped up everywhere. I'll give you a rundown of what all i've seen and what all I've done since.
So I start getting a message something like
- AppleSecurity - Unauthorized caller ...popping up intermittently. And then,
- Firefox, once you shut the window down you couldn't get open again, and when you quit the app the computer seemed to freeze
- ITunes wouldnt open
- App Store wouldnt open
- Safari would only open some webpages
- Steam worked 10% of the time.
- Powerpoint and Word would crash or not save etc.
- I had to push the button to restart to get the thing working again and from time to time it would freeze or crash shutdown at the grey screen.
- I kept getting small indications that the memory was full.
- Cant shut down or restart without holding the button
So I deleted stuff, generally cleaned up unneeded files etc. ... Same problems. I eventually got so exasperated that I just stuck everything I needed on a flash drive and wiped the user and started a new one.
Same problems but slightly better.... So at this point I go into the Apple Store and go to the Genius bar - The guy wipes runs a check on my hard drive and everything ticks the boxes barring battery which is at 74% roughly. Then he wipes everything off to a factory restart, updates it, then hands it back.
I get it back home and I have issues even setting up the user as if it was a new macbook. I have untick all the set time zone and network stuff to get it to work.
I get it back going and ... still problems... but slightly better. But I cant update flash, steam crashes, sometimes again things dont work. Safari sometimes doesnt open some webpages and I have to restart to get things to get working again.
Also, things seem to be a little better when I'm using the universities internet as opposed to the one in my flat.
SO...! Back into the Apple Store, Genius Bar, he runs a full check on the drive because he seen some I/O errors in the console. AND.. everything passes. He runs a full daignostic and still can't figure it out. He says he seen some weird messages about Steam causing problems in the console but that was it, which I dont think could be the problem because I was getting problems before I even reinstalled it after the factory wipe/reset. The network causing problems maybe?
What do I do people? No-one at the Apple Store can pinpoint whats going on?! I really want to get this fixed because I need this for uni and I can't afford a new one
Please Help!poikkeus1,
After getting a "properly" functioning LB, the temps are much lower than that, even when beating onit doing live recording. idle 25-30 degrees max, beating it with a "pile of inputs" recording 65-70
The first machine i spent over 4 hours with a senior engineer doing an ARA, it was like someone took a shotgun and blasted the data all over the place.
I switched machines (after 30 days, which would say they knew they had an issue)
Second time temps off the map, and unexplainable "bizzare" behavior. (random)
second time same deal, all over the place.
Now everything seems happy, for months now. (I hope I just did not jinx myself)
It sure seems that would be the place to look, hence you should ask for the flat rate repair.

Mid-2010 MacBook Pro suddenly Dead
My MacBook Pro was working perfectly fine when I closed the lid and plugged it in. Fifteen minutes later I opened the lid and nothing happened. It will not turn on; no signs of life whatsoever. The only thing it will do is, with the power cord attached, all five of the Battery Life lights on the side light up solid for five seconds or until the cord is unplugged.
I am outside the U.S. at the moment and the Mac Authorized repair ship says they do not have the ability to test individual parts and can only replace the entire logic board at a very high price.
Any ideas?
Details:
Mid-2010, 15-inch, 2.4GHz, i5, Lion, confirmed no carbonization or liquid spills.
Thanks! You should follow the instruction given for Condition and replace the battery. It's almost four years old with over a thousand charging cycles.....it's dead.

Mid 2010 MacBook Pro: Will randomly blue-screen and Safari repeatedly crashes.
I bought my MacBook Pro in June/July of last year, and it has worked perfectly fine up to this point. However, for the past 2 months or so, my computer will randomly go to a blue screen and log me out. Also, Safari will crash several times (it had never crashed on me until the blue-screen problem started. Both of these issues surfaced at the same time). For the most part, the blue-screening problem only happens when I'm using the internet, but sometimes it will happen when I am offline as well. This is an infrequent/inconsistent problem, though. It will blue-screen and Safari will crash one week, but then it will be perfectly fine for the next three or four weeks. What's wrong/how do I fix it?
Hi JRC8.8,
It sounds like you have been on the right track in trying to troubleshoot this issue. You may want to see if your MacBook Pro will boot directly to the Apple Hardware Test, as outlined in the following article:
Apple Support: Using Apple Hardware Test

Hi all... My mid 2010 MacBook Pro took a keyboard spill. It still works but the display is very very dark. A faint image can only be seen at an angle in very bright light. I think this model has an LED screen. Can anyone please tell me what the fix for this is? Thank you sooooo much!

Some liquid has just spilled into your Mac. What should you do?
Do
Immediately shut down the computer and unplug the power cord.
Remove the computer's battery (if you can)
Disconnect any peripherals (printers, iPods, scanners, cameras, etc.)
Lay the computer upside down on paper towels to get as much liquid as possible to drip out.
Note what was spilled on your Mac.
Bring the computer into an Apple store or AASP as soon as possible.
Don't
Don't try to turn it back on. Liquids can help electrical current move about the components of your Mac in destructive ways.
Don't shake the computer (this will only spread the liquid around).
Don't use a hair dryer on it (even at a low setting a hair dryer will damage sensitive components). -
Mid-2010 Macbook Pro White Screen of Death?
Hi all,
I have a Mid- 2010 Macbook Pro, running 10.8.2 that, when booting, sounds the Startup Chime but no Apple logo appears, just a white screen. I'm in IT so I've done several things, but nothing has worked and I couldn't find a previous discussion that was similar to mine.
Here's what I've done so far:
- Changed hard drives
- reseated RAM
- Unplugged Battery
- Reset the PRAM
- Tried to boot from CD using CTRL- C
- Tried Recovery boot using CTRL- R
Anything else I could try? I keep thinking it may have something to do with the Time Change, but that seems a little weird to me if that's the cause. It worked fine late last night and then it did this in the morning (after the time change).
Thanks for any help you can give!Hi sanjampet,
Tried the SMC reset, safe boot, CD boot, and Recovery boot all with no luck. Not sure why it's going on, but it's looking more and more like a hardware issue to me. It's a white screen (instead of a grey screen), so I'm worried that it's something with it. I'm going to try and see if I can remote into it using Screen Sharing to see if it's something with the display.
My wife used it last and she told me that it was slow on the internet with the mouse freezing up, so she held down the power to turn it off then it came up with the white screen which hasn't come back on since. I'm using an 3rd party SSD hard drive and replaced it with another SATA hard drive, but it didn't help.
Thanks,

Mid 2010 MacBook pro gray screen beeps no startup
Hello,
My mid 2010 MacBook pro will not startup. What I get is the startup chimes with white or gray screen. Then some beeping and clicking starts. Will not boot remotely from FireWire drive.
I'm thinking it might be ram based on what I have read so far as opposed to a hard drive crash.
Any ideas? The number of beeps should tell you what the problem is.

Mid 2010 Macbook Pro 13" sudden shutdown with no errors
I have a mid 2010 Macbook Pro 13" 2.66 GHz with 2x4GB of Crucial RAM, the original 320GB HDD and running OS X 10.10.1; however, this problem has already been bugging me back when I had Mavericks. For about a year and a half now my laptop would suddenly shutdown with a click sound. It first only did it about once every couple of weeks but now it'll sometimes do it within five minutes of turning it on. Sometimes it'll last a couple hours, and other times it'll last 5 seconds. It's not temperature related, because it'll do it whether it has just been turned on or been on for over an hour. I reset the PRAM and SMC, but that didn't fix it. I ran tests with Disk Utility and it said there were some issues with the disk. Disk Utility wasn't able to do it, so I repaired it with fsck in Single User Mode. I thought this was finally going to work, but within 15 minutes it shut down again. Finally I ran the Apple Hardware Test and put it through the extensive test. After it was done running, it said that everything was ok. So according to that there should be nothing wrong with the internal hardware. I would check in the console logs, and it would give me -2 and -60 for "Previous shutdown cause: ". At this point I have no idea what could be causing the problems.
I took it in to the Genius Bar over the weekend, and they ran their tests on it. It passed with flying colors; including the battery, which is doing quite well for its age. So with that being said, they said that the problem is probably with the logic board since everything else came back ok. At this point, I am better off investing in a new computer since a new logic board goes for $400 without labor, and that is if the problem really is only with the logic board since that was their best guess, not definitive.

I have a mid 2010 macbook pro with a mini display port. I want to display it on my hdtv. I tried a mini display port to hdmi adapter first but that wouldn't work so then I tried a mini display port to dvi adapter connected to a dvi to hdmi adapter but still no success. Any ideas?
I have your same model and I'm using a mini display port to hdmi when I want to connect right to a TV. Is it not detecting, or is it a blank screen etc? What TV are you trying to connect to?

Mid 2010 MacBook Pro 15" Blacks Out Without Warning
Quick Summary of Problem: My MacBook Pro is currently shutting down without warning. It would be more accurate to say that the screen goes blank but the machine remains on as can be heard by the fan. Nothing resolves it without powering down and restarting. It has occurred when attached to a power source or via the battery.
My machine specs: Mid 2010 MacBook Pro 15” with 500GB hard drive, 8GB RAM, Intel HD Graphics/nVidia GeForce GT 330M with 512MB, anti-glare 15” screen with max resolution 1680 x 1050). Running Snow Leopard 10.6.8 with 2013-001 Security Patch installed.
I have AppleCare which commenced when I first bought the machine in July 2010.
System Profiler says my battery condition is ‘Normal’. Cycle count: 610.
Detailed Summary of Problem: Back in January, my MacBook Pro shut down several times without warning. Each time, I was creating selections on high resolution imagery in Adobe Photoshop CS5.
Not long after, I saw the ‘MacBook Pro SMC Firmware Update 1.7’ relased on Feb 12 (http://support.apple.com/kb/DL1633) and installed it via Software Update. By coincidence or not, my MBP behaved much better afterwards and the seemingly random blank screens requiring a restart disappeared.
But then I installed the ‘Security Update 2013-001 (Snow Leopard)’(http://support.apple.com/kb/DL1642) via Software Update and that’s the only thing I can really remember changing to my system. Since then, the black-outs have reappeared. As before, I was usually using Photoshop and working with high resolution imagery. However, one time the machine blacked-out, I was simply doing a two-finger scroll on the built-in trackpad whilst in Chrome (Version 25.0.1364.172).
The blackout has occurred twice now not being connected to power, and twice with it being connected to a wall socket. Needless to say, I lost work in Photoshop (even though I’ve begun to save more regularly) and now it feels like it’s a ticking time bomb and I don’t know when it’s going to go off.
One thing I’ve found rather odd is that in the crash log, the kernal version doesn’t seem right for Snow Leopard:
Kernel version:
Darwin Kernel Version 10.8.0: Tue Jun 7 16:33:36 PDT 2011; root:xnu-1504.15.3~1/RELEASE_I386
System model name: MacBookPro6,2 (Mac-F22586C8)
The full crash log can be found at the bottom of this post.
Fixes I’ve tried:
1) Resetting the NV-RAM has done nothing. (was suggested
2) I’ve tried reinstalling the ‘MacBook Pro SMC Firmware Update 1.7’ by downloading the manual installer from Apple, however it now says ‘Alert: This software is not supported on your system’ which in a way makes sense given I’d already applied the firmware update, but a more accurate message along the lines of ‘This firmware update has already been installed’ would be more reassuring.
3) If all else fails, I could resort to copying over a backup I created with Carbon Copy Cloner, which was done before I reinstalled the 2013-001 Security Update for Snow Leopard. But that’s a bit of a headache too, because my documents I’ve updated since the backup will be out of sync. Another reason this isn’t a great solution is that I can’t take advantage of the 2013-001 security update, nor future ones.
Any suggestions? There’s probably no good time for something like this to happen, but this is a particularly bad time – I’m currently beginning design and finished art freelancing and brushing up on some applications I haven’t used in years. Nor am I going to make an impression meeting with recruiters without my folio being presented from my MBP.
I’ve already booked a Genius appointment 2.5 days from now, but all help and ideas greatly appreciated!

However, the issue described by TS4088 is not a soldering problem. It is a Latent Defect -- a flaw built into certain batches of those chips from the day they were packaged and installed.
If your Mac fails the VST test used to detect this Latent Defect, re-flowing the solder is likely to have NO EFFECT on its performance -- the solution is the remove the defective chip and replace with a good one.
There certainly can be problems in these and other Macs where a re-flow would be beneficial. But I caution Readers not to generalize your solution to Macs that are known to fail VST. Re-flow alone will not solve the Latent Defect problem. -
Mid 2010 Macbook Pro will not stay off or asleep
Hi,
I have a mid 2010 MacBook Pro will not stay turned off when I tell it to shut down. It will shut down just fine, but a few seconds later it will boot up again. This also happens when I try to close the lid (or just put it to sleep), it will work fine, screen/Apple logo on the back will turn off and the status LED will slowly pulse. However a few seconds later, the LED stops pulsing and the Apple logo will illuminate. If I open the lid I will be greeted with the log in page with zero delay (i.e. its been displaying for a while).
This has become problematic because the computer always be running. If I put it in my laptop bag the computer will get hot as ****. The only way to get it to really turn off is to let the battery die or remove the battery. But this computer does not have the externally removable battery so that is not a trivial process.
The symptoms exist in both Mac OS (Mountain Lion and Maveriks) and Windows 8/8.1. This makes me believe its something in the hardware (or at least a setting in the hardware), not software (I know Apple doesn't care what Windows does, but it is exibiting identical behavior).
I have reset the NVRAM and the SMC with no luck. When I reset the SMC I didn't get a good indication that anything happened though, and was wondering if that is normal. Resetting the NVRAM results in another restart, while its hard to tell if you actually reset the SMC. I reset the SMC by turning the computer off, then holding the power button when it tries to restart (this usually gives me a few minutes where the computer will actually stay off), then pressing shift, control, option and power at the same time and releasing them at the same time. This is how the Apple documentation said to do it. They did not mention how long the must be held though so I presume that doesn't matter.
Anyone experience this/have any ideas?
Thanks,
JimBtmm error "can not coonnect to cloud server" Facetime and IMessage " Could not sign in, check your network connection and try again". Which I have again and again...

I went to the Genius Bar because everything I tried to solve the problem didn't help. These are 2 of the links to info. that gave me hope that I might get the problem "permanently" solved without having to pay for repairs.

Mid 2010 MacBook Pro extremely slow
Hi! I have a mid-2010 MacBook Pro,which suddenly decided to start moving at snail speed for me. Applications take 5 minutes to open and when they do, they usually crash and I have to force quit. Finder runs pretty smooth but it is also slower than it used to be.
I have:
4GB Ram
500GB capacity hardrive, 173GB available
I have booted in safe mode, done both a PRAM and SMC reset, is there anything else I can try before I spend a ton of money getting it fixed?
Thanks in advance, and sorry for any typos, I am on mobile.Assume the boot drive is dying and have a extra copy of your user files on another regular external drive in addition to any TimeMachine or bootable clone you may have.
Most commonly used backup methods
Next run through these two user tips
Why is my computer slow?
..Step by Step to fix your Mac
If you want us to help you further and possibly pinpoint the cause please provide as much information in this next user tip back on this thread.
Help us to help you on these forums
For instance we have no idea what operating system version your using.
What do you mean by snail speed? Do you see spinning beach balls or is there a runaway process, is the machine hot?
Slow booting, loading programs or slow writing to the drive? Slow online only?
Thanks.
