Mid 2011 21.5" iMac freezing constantly

As of lately, my iMac has been constantly freezing. At first I had a problem with bad RAM causing kernel panics after I installed 16GB of Patriot Viper memory, I thought it was the Patriot Memory because everything was fine until I installed that. I figured it was because it was 1600 MHz and my iMac is rated for 1333 MHz. Anyways, I ran the Apple hardware test to find that the original RAM was the suspect but just to be safe, I replaced ALL RAM with Corsair RAM (8GB x 4 for a total 32GB). Now, on to my new problem at hand. My iMac is constantly freezing, everything is up to date, I have ran Disk Utility with no abnormal results, reset PRAM/VRAM, reset SMC, I also downloaded multiple third party apps to check my disks etc, and it seemed it was running hot so I downloaded iMac Fan Control and set the temperatures as follows:
Lower Temp Threshold: 46C
Upper Temp Threshold: 85C
Slowest CPU Fan Speed: 1200
Slowest HD Fan Speed: 1600
Slowest DVD Fan Speed: 1600
booted in Safe Mode and so far no freezing. Any ideas on what to do?

Please read this whole message carefully, especially the warnings, before doing anything.
1. I can only guess which of the modifications you've made to your system is causing the problem. The changes suggested here should be considered provisional; they may not help, or they may remove functionality that you find useful. If a third-party system modification that you want to keep is at fault, refer to its developer for support.
2. WARNING: Back up all data now if you haven’t already done so. Before proceeding, you must be sure you can restore your system to its present state, even if it becomes unbootable. If you’re not sure you can do that, STOP — DON’T CHANGE ANYTHING.
If you don't like the results of the procedure suggested below, restore from your backup.
I will not be responsible for the consequences, and I will not be able to help, if you ignore this warning.
3. You should either remove or update the following system modification(s), if an update is available from the developer:
[Not applicable]
and definitely remove at least the following:
† FreeMemory
† TechTool Pro
4. Whatever you remove must be removed completely, and (unless otherwise specified in this message) the only way to do that is to use the uninstallation tool, if any, provided by the third-party developers, or to follow their instructions. If the software has been incompletely removed, you may have to re-download or even reinstall it in order to finish the job. I can't be more specific, because I don't install such things myself. Please do your own research.
Here are some general guidelines to get you started. Suppose you want to remove something called “BrickMyMac” (a hypothetical example.) First, consult the product's Help menu, if there is one, for instructions. Finding none there, look on the developer's website, say www.brickmymac.com. (That may not be the actual name of the site; if necessary, search the web for the product name.) If you don’t find anything on the website or in your search, contact the developer. While you're waiting for a response, download BrickMyMac.dmg and open it. There may be an application in there such as “Uninstall BrickMyMac.” If not, open “BrickMyMac.pkg” and look for an Uninstall button.
Again, please don't ask me to do this research for you. You can do it better than I can, because I don't use the product and I may not even know what it is.
You will generally have to reboot after uninstalling a system modification. Until you do that, the uninstallation may have no effect, or unpredictable effects.
5. If you can’t remove software in any other way, you’ll have to erase and install OS X. Never install any third-party software unless you're sure you know how to uninstall it; otherwise you may create problems that are very hard to solve.
WARNING: Trying to remove complex system modifications by hunting for files by name often will not work and may make the problem worse. The same goes for "utilities" such as "AppCleaner" and the like that purport to remove software.
6. I recommend that you never reinstall the modifications marked with a dagger (†) above, if any. If your problem is resolved after uninstalling all the above modifications and rebooting, but you still want to use some of those not marked with a dagger, you can experiment with putting them back, one at a time, testing carefully after each step. Keep in mind that system modifications may be incompatible with each other or with future OS X updates, so it may not be clear which one is at fault.
7. If you still have problems after making the suggested changes and rebooting, post again. Remember: if you don’t like the results of this procedure, you can undo it by restoring from the last backup you made before you started.
This procedure will unlock all your user files (not system files) and reset their ownership and access-control lists to the default. If you've set special values for those attributes on any of your files, they will be reverted. In that case, either stop here, or be prepared to recreate the settings if necessary. Do so only after verifying that those settings didn't cause the problem. If none of this is meaningful to you, you don't need to worry about it.
Step 1
If you have more than one user account, and the one in question is not an administrator account, then temporarily promote it to administrator status in the Users & Groups preference pane. To do that, unlock the preference pane using the credentials of an administrator, check the box marked Allow user to administer this computer, then reboot. You can demote the problem account back to standard status when this step has been completed.
Enter the following command in the Terminal window in the same way as before (triple-click, copy, and paste):
{ sudo chflags -R nouchg,nouappnd ~ $TMPDIR.. ; sudo chown -R $UID:staff ~ $_ ; sudo chmod -R u+rwX ~ $_ ; chmod -R -N ~ $_ ; } 2>&-
This time you'll be prompted for your login password, which won't be displayed when you type it. You may get a one-time warning to be careful. If you don’t have a login password, you’ll need to set one before you can run the command. If you see a message that your username "is not in the sudoers file," then you're not logged in as an administrator.
The command may take several minutes to run, depending on how many files you have. Wait for a new line ending in a dollar sign (“$”) to appear, then quit Terminal.
Step 2 (optional)
Take this step only if you have trouble with Step 1 or if it doesn't solve the problem.
Boot into Recovery. When the OS X Utilities screen appears, select
Utilities ▹ Terminal
from the menu bar. A Terminal window will open. In that window, type this:
res
Press the tab key. The partial command you typed will automatically be completed to this:
resetpassword
Press return. A Reset Password window will open. You’re not  going to reset a password.
Select your startup volume ("Macintosh HD," unless you gave it a different name) if not already selected.
Select your username from the menu labeled Select the user account if not already selected.
Under Reset Home Directory Permissions and ACLs, click the Reset button.
Select
 ▹ Restart
from the menu bar.
Launch the Font Book application and validate all fonts. You must select the fonts in order to validate them. See the built-in help and this support article for instructions. If Font Book finds any issues, resolve them.
From the application's menu bar, select
File ▹ Restore Standard Fonts...
You'll be prompted to confirm, and then to enter your administrator login password.
Boot in safe mode to rebuild the font caches. Boot again as usual and test.
Note: If FileVault is enabled, or if a firmware password is set, or if the boot volume is a software RAID, you can’t boot in safe mode. In that case, ask for instructions.
Also note that if you deactivate or remove any built-in fonts, for instance by using a third-party font manager, the system may become unstable.

    Hi there,
The simplest way is to drag it across wirelessly using the 'Airdrop' application once both computers are near one another. 'Airdrop' can be found near the top, on the left hand side menu, within 'Finder'.

  • HT201343 AirPlay Mirroring Not supported - After downloading OS X Mountain Lion I found out that AirPlay is only Supported for Mid 2011 or newer iMacs - Is there a workaround

I got a new Apple TV for Christmas, I read tha the OS X Mountain Lion supported AirPlay with the Apple TV, so I paid for the OS upgrade.  After the upgrade I found out that AirPlay is not supported on iMac's older than mid 2011.   This ***** because this was the only reasion I needed the upgrade,   It should have been more clearly posted that the features of the new OS were only supported on specific machines!
Short of buying a new iMac is there a way to use Airport Mirroring from my iMac to the TV ?
What other Mountain Lion features don't work on a late 2009 iMac ?

First, if you would have visted http://www.apple.com/osx/specs/ you would have seen there is a VERY LARGE and IN BOLD section that covers what functions of 10.8 are limited to what macs.  Second "needed the upgrade"... spare me.
To your, "work around" question a lot of people report a third party app named "air parrot" as pretty reliable.  You're welcome to try your luck with that.

  • Brand new iMac freezes constantly! Updates aren't helping!

    Hello everyone,
This past Sunday I bought a brand new iMac intel Core 2 Duo with a 250 GB HDD and 1 GB of RAM. At home I set it up with my SAMSUNG 1080p 22" monitor, Apple bluetooth Keyboard and mightymouse, and a Western Digital 350 GB HDD hooked up via USB. I was excited to finally jump on the intel-based Mac bandwagon, as well as experience dual monitors for the first time.
That was Sunday. Tuesday evening I was watching "Rome" on itunes on my Samsung monitor while surfing the web with Omniweb on the iMac monitor. All of sudden, everything locked up. I was able to move my cursor, but nothing responeded to my clicking. I hard booted the system and loaded everything I had going again, and sure enough, it locked up a few moments later. I ran system update, updated everything, then restarted. Time went by and although not immediatly, later that night it froze up on me again.
Fast forward to last nite, and the freezing reached and all time high. 5 times. Each time was when I had a browser open in my iMac window and I had Quicktime playing in my Samsung monitor. I was watching a sports program, with the player fit to the screen.
I have read many posts about intel iMacs freezing late last year, but there was a firmware update that evidently fixed that. I have this update installed, and I have had no luck. I have even contacted Apple Care via phone where I got instructed to unplug everything, plug it back in, start in safe mode, and delete cache. That didn't help me out at all. Am I right insuspecting I have a faulty Video card? I just ordered 4GB of RAM, could this be a RAM issue?

When diagnostics are run on a freezing computer and nothing shows, I'll put the program into a testing loop because this means one of two things: the issue is heat related so running the diagnostics several more times will bring on the heat so that the issue shows up or the installed RAM is marginal, just flaky enough to show up now and again but not so far off that a run through of the memory test catches it on the first run.
As I said in my original post, memory is always a suspect in a freezing or kernel panicking computer. And it does tend to top my list. But from what you describe I'm not quite willing to say, "Why don't you just wait until the RAM upgrade arrives?"

  • SSD install in mid-2011 21.5" iMac

Hello, community.   Let me preface this by saying I consider myself to be a very technically inclined individual as far as computers, etc. go, so, don't be afraid to pass on the lamen's terms, and such. Anyways, with that said, I have never been inside an iMac. I have only delt with the insides of PC's and some Mac Pros, so I have a fair amount of knowledge when it comes to parts, etc. At this point, my primary computer is this 2011, 21.5" iMac. I upgraded the ram a year or so ago and now I would like to install an SSD. In the past when building PCs, and upgrading others, I have had exceptional luck with OCZ Vertex SSDs and Kingston Hyper X's. With that said, I have only worked with SSDs inside the Windows environment. I have never done anything with OS X, as far as they are concerned.
So, with all that said, I do know the following:
I will be removing my optical drive for the SSD
I will be keeping my stock 500GB HDD inside the machine (if I can use it)
Which brings up my first question:
Can I use both my SSD and stock HDD within OS X? (SSD as a boot volume, per se, and the HDD for storage?)
And will I need any special brackets, cables, etc?
As I said, I have no experience with iMac internals, so the whole process will be new to me. however, I did manage to find a pretty detailed teardown/rebuild video for my particular model. I just need some info on the software side of things, really.
    Thanks!

First, you need to prep the SSD:
    Drive Partition and Format
    1. Open Disk Utility in your Utilities folder.
    2. After DU loads select your hard drive (this is the entry with the mfgr.'s ID and size) from the left side list. Note the SMART status of the drive in DU's status area.  If it does not say "Verified" then the drive is failing or has failed and will need replacing.  SMART info will not be reported  on external drives. Otherwise, click on the Partition tab in the DU main window.
    3. Under the Volume Scheme heading set the number of partitions from the drop down menu to one. Click on the Options button, set the partition scheme to GUID then click on the OK button. Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled.) Click on the Apply button and wait until the process has completed.
    4. Select the volume you just created (this is the sub-entry under the drive entry) from the left side list. Click on the Erase tab in the DU main window.
    5. Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled.) Click on the Security button, check the button or set for Zero Data and click on OK to return to the Erase window.
    6. Click on the Erase button. The format process can take up to several hours depending upon the drive size.
How to use an SSD with your HDD
If you are going to use an SSD as a boot drive together with your existing HDD as the "data" drive, here's what you can do.
After installing the SSD you will need to partition and format the SSD using Disk Utility. Then, install OS X on the SSD. After OS X has been installed boot from the SSD. Use Startup Disk preferences to set the SSD as the startup volume.
Open Users & Groups preferences. Click on the lock icon and authenticate. CTRL- or RIGHT-click on your user account listing in the sidebar and select Advanced Options from the context menu.
You will see a field labeled "Home dir:" At the right end you will see a Change button. Click on it. In the file dialog locate the Home folder now located on the HDD (HDD/Users/account_name/.) Select the folder, click on Open button. Restart the computer as directed.
When the computer boots up it will now be using the Home folder located on the HDD.
Another more technical method involving the Terminal and aliases is discussed in depth here: Using OS X with an SSD plus HDD setup - Matt Gemmell. This is my preferred approach because I can select which of the Home's folders I want on the HDD and which I don't want. For example, I like to keep the Documents and Library folders on the SSD because I access their content frequently.
Be sure you retain the fully bootable system on your HDD in case you ever need it.

  • My 21.5" quad core i5 iMac mid 2011 with LION keeps freezing.

this has never happened before while using snow leopard, but when using lion suddenly it freezes when i was on youtube and it has frozen when i was syncing my ipod. the other bad thing about it, is the computer doesn't know that it has frozen and it wont automatically restart even though i have the setting on.
hopefully this is just teething problems since lion is a new operating system, but i'd expect more from a company like apple.
any suggestions? or maybe a patch will come out?

    hello,
I am yet to upgrade my OS to Lion but I have experienced this thing on my leopard 10.6 quiet a few times. I called the customer care support guy he gave me a solution to make the macbook run smooth without gettign freezed ( i hope it also works for the iMac ). So, what he told me to do is to drag and drop the entire caches as well as the startupitems folder ( Macintosh HD> Library ) and also the caches folder from your computer account library. restart computer then empty trash box and again restart the computer and use it but honestly bro I dont know if this will help you in OS x Lion.
Can you not restart the iMac after it is getting freezed ??

  • 2011 21.5" iMac Freezing, Not Waking Up, Blue Screen

    Hi all,
I bought a new 2011 base 21.5 inch iMac and have had a few problems ever since I first got it. At first it would simply freeze the screen, but I could still move the mouse cursor although I could not interact with anything on the screen. I could still SSH into the machine just fine in order to issue a shutdown command. A few times when restarting it will get stuck on the blue screen. Finally, and most common, sometimes the machine will not wake from sleep. I will do a hard reset and I get the error report screen. I always send the error report to Apple. Here is a snippet of the report:
    Wed May 25 14:38:33 2011
    panic(cpu 1 caller 0xffffff7f80d9b650): "ATICLASS::detectPowerDown: GPU is not found. NO MM PCI access!!!\n"@/SourceCache/GraphicsDrivers/GraphicsDrivers-6.34.13/Common/IONDRV /ATI/IOFramebuffer/ATIFramebuffer/Controller/Sources/R800/EvergreenClocks.cpp:83 1
Backtrace (CPU 1), Frame : Return Address
Things I have tried but still haven't cleared the issue up:
    Software Update
    PRAM reset
    SMC Reset
    Disk Repair
Boot from DVD, extended hardware test
Reinstall OSX from DVD after erasing Macintosh HD volume
    Thanks.

Well I am sorry to say that four months later I still have all the problems mentioned in my original post. No updates or solutions have worked. In Lion whenever the system freezes or refuses to wake, the console shows a long list of GPU debug values.
The problem seems to only happen after being on for a long time. If sleep is enabled, it will not wake. If sleep is not enabled, after a while of not being used something--either a game, video, or itunes... will cause the UI to freeze. This makes it difficult to reproduce, and when I take the computer in to Apple, in the 30 minute genius session of course everything works just fine. I does not seem to be temperature related because when idle or asleep for a while the temps do not rise.
At this point I am regretting the purchase of this system. I seriously hope that Apple can resolve it soon. I am aware that many, many other iMac users have similar issues, but there has been no acknowledgement from Apple.
    Not happy.

  • IMac Freezing constantly

I have an iMac that was running slow and had random freeze issue, decided it's time to reformat and do a clean install, went with Snow Leopard.  However, after the install, the freeze became too frequent, sometimes even within a minute after force restart.
Symtom:  The freeze happens at random which means it will froze when in finder, in applications, or do nothing.  Noticed there are line glitches too, black out screen.  Mouse would move, but have to force shut down with the power button.  The freeze can happens as fast as within a minute after restart, sometimes can run for 45 minutes...etc.
    iMac 4.1
    RAM 1.5GB
    HD: 250GB - 190GB still available.
    Graphic: ATI x1600
    OS: 10.5 and 10.6.
    Here is what I've tried:
    - At first I thought it had something to do with Snow Leopard 10.6.8, and ATI, tried the KrzysiuTurek technique. https://discussions.apple.com/message/11300357#11300357
    - Rolled back to 10.6.2.
    - Downgrade to 10.5, and 10.5.8.
Read about resetting SMC or PRAM, doubt it's those.
    - Did clean install, reformat.
I have two other iMacs that are the same model running on 10.5.8, it's slow but at least don't freeze. I think I am going to leave those two along.
There doesn't seem to be a definite fix, not even Apple.  Any ideas?

Open Activity Monitor, Show:>All Processes, sort on CPU%, see if anything using too much CPU% when this happens, click on Memory tab, do you have many Pageouts?
Open Console in Utilities & see if there are any clues or repeating messages when this happens.

  • Mid 2011 Macbook Pro keeps freezing and Chrome won't work.

Starting two days ago my Macbook has started freezing. It was working fine then an hour later it started freezing. It doesn't seem to matter what the program is, Chrome, Microsoft Word, Finder, Notes, everything; except for activity monitor.I have had troubles with my HD as my main Tb hard drive failed probably a month ago; when ever I started up the computer it shows the grey file with a blinking question mark. Never was able to resolve that. Now I am on the stock HD, 500 Gb, and have used about 51 Gb of it; with no huge programs such as ableton, PS, etc. on this HD. I have upgraded my ram to 16 Gb, but I am currently running 1.5 gb wired, 1.3 gb active, and 300 Mb inactive; totalling to 3.1 gb used and 12.9 free. I also have 500mb pages in and 0mb pages out. This maybe the reason, however I have no applications open but when looking at the processes in activity monitor it doesn't show anything abnormal. I am currently using around 2-8% of my CPU; my CPU being an I5. However, when it freezes and after it finally ends beach balling the cpu percentage skyrockets to around 40% then falls back to around 4. Yesterday I tried loading google chrome and now it says there is an ssl error, and my date in the top right corner has been rolled back to January 1 2012. I Tried chaning it but it beach balled and I shut off my computer. Right now I am using Safari, and have closed many, random, processes on the activity monitor and it seems to be running smoother with no beach balls. Anyone have any suggestions?
**When I tried to add tags posting this my safari froze. When i closed xcel in my activity monitor safari started working again. Is this possibly a RAM issue?

So my genius confirmed that my logic board had died. he said it's very rare for this to happen unless there's been physical damage I.e water damage. But this one had him stumped he thinks my hard drive is also shot too.

You have to take the computer to the Apple store to have it checked out.
    Best.

  • 24" 2.4ghz al imac freezes constantly after 10.5.8 update

    Hi,
I have a 24" al imac that run perfectly for years until I installed the 10.5.8 update. Now my screen dims, displays the power button graphic and says "press the power button to restart..." which I do and then send the report to apple... It's locking up every few minutes. Since the machine was no longer useable, I did a clean install (erasing the whole disk) and installed 10.5.5. And it continued to lock up. Did the 10.5.7 update via firewire target mode, still locking up. Any ideas on how to fix this?
    Thanks, Mark

If the AHT (Apple Hardware Test) came back with no errors, that doesn't 100% rule out hardware. Especially if it's intermittent.
Definitely try Safe Boot. If you successfully get booted into safe boot you can try things like clearing your login items which you can do my accessing System Preferences and clicking on Accounts. Once in accounts select Login Items on the right hand side and empty the list by highlighting the items and then clicking on the Minus button at the bottom of the list. Once clear, restart your computer and see if the issue persists.
If it does, your next best bet is to boot to the install disk. Your computer would have come with two disks. One will say MAC OS X Install DVD and the other will say Applications or Bundled Software. You want to boot to the MAC OS X Install DVD. Once you select english as the main language wait a few seconds for the menu bar to appear along the top of the screen. Select Utilities and then Disk Utility. Disk Utility will now open and once it gathers your disk information select the first indented volume on the left side. Then click the first aid button on the right hand side of the window and then click on Repair Disk at the bottom of the window. Be sure to select Repair Disk and not Repair Disk Permissions although you won't damage anything if you select that option, you'll just waste 5 to 7 minutes. If it is an operating system issue, which is doubtful, it will attempt to repair the disk. If successful it will tell you. If no repairs to the volume are necessary it will tell you that the volume appears to be normal. If repairs fail, then you need to reinstall the operating system.
Most of the time a Kernel Panic indicates a hardware failure so keep that in mind. If all else fails, book yourself a Genius Bar appointment at an Apple Store, which is free, and they will diagnose the problem. Considering the severity of the issue, they will probably keep it for a day or two.
Hope things work out for you.

  • I have several new mid-2011 21.5" imacs that kernel panic

The are running fully updated OS X 10.6.8, booting to a 64bit kernel.  All the available firmware updates for the graphics card and bluetooth have been done.  If I boot them into Safe Mode or into 32bit kernel mode, they do not panic.  That being said, I know it is possible it is a piece of software that could be causing the issue, but I wanted the crash log posted and looked at anyway - incase I am wrong.
