Mid-2012 MacBook "Do you want to restart" message with timer?
Hello everyone! My mid-2012 MacBook Pro 15' recently started showing a message in a small box - unnounced - that asks, "Do you want to restart your Mac?" with a 1 minute countdown timer in effect. What is this? I have never seen this before. It is VERY maddening and bizarre. How do I remove/disable this crazy issue? Please help. Thank you.
I am not sure about the Energy Saver as advised by Linc, but I think it will only ask you to put the machine to sleep or shut it down by any means. Correct me if I am wrong.
But if you have set auto update on, the system might have just performed a critical update that required restart and you skipped it once, or more. Try restart the machine ONCE, then see if that message still persist. If it does, I suggest you to take it to the local Apple store for professional helps.

Any way to cancel "Are you sure you want to restart" message?
In other versions of OS X, holding down the option key when selecting an option to restart or shut down the computer allowed the user to bypass the annoying "Are you sure…" message. This seems to have stopped working in Lion. Is there any way to bypass these messages? Did the modifier key get changed? There's nothing wrong with the keyboard's option key. The "bypass" works as it should in Snow Leopard.
Weird: after consistently NOT working for months, now that I've talked about it publicly, it has apparently been shamed into working as it should.

Mid 2012 MacBook Pro 13 restarts when moved
Hi everyone,
I have a mid-2012 MacBook Pro 13 inch that still has the factory 8gb ram and 750gb HD and the 2.9 i7. Recently i have been having issues with it restarting, the first couple of times it did it would only do it when i would move it and right before it would restart the screen would glitch a little. A little bit after that it would restart if i was running something memory intensive like converting movie files. And finally at one point it wouldnt boot up at all and would beep 3 times, after that i opened it and just swapped the the 4gb ram and it worked just fine. I also clean installed Yosemite right after that and it was fine for about a week and now its starting to restart whenever i move it again. Before everyone tells me to buy new ram or take it the genius bar I want to know if theres anything else i can do, Im in college right now and I'm not covered by applecare anymore so my budget it very limited so i would like to make those a last resort kinda thing. Thanks for your time!An appointment at an Apple genius bar is FREE. If repairs are needed, you will be told of the costs and you can accept or reject any repair quotes.
Based on your description, it indicates that there is a loose connection. I would open the MBP and inspect to see if it can be located.
You might also run an Apple Hardware Test:

An error free AHT is not definitive.

Occasional restarts on mid 2012 macbook pro after ram install?
Hi,
Recently installed 2x4gb Corsair Vengeance DDR3 memory to my mid 2012 Macbook Pro 13" to upgrade the ram to 8GB.
Since then i have been having almost daily forced restarts, where it says it has to restart because of a problem, i believe it
is a kernel problem.
Also have been experiencing many repeated "Aw Snap" messages on Google Chrome although this could be unrelated.
The specifications for my mac are:
OSX Mavericks 10.9.2
Processor: 2.5 GHz Intel Core i5
Memory: 8 GB 1600 MHz DDR3
Graphics: Intel HD Graphics 4000 1024 MB
Has anyone had any problem with this type of memory? I believed it would work when i bought it.
Original memory was 4GB that came installed in the Macbook Pro.
Other than occasional restarts, everything seems to work fine other than "aw snap" messages on latest version
of chrome (have tried disabling extensions, making a new user profile, reinstalling Chrome, none of which has worked).
Would appreciate any help, advise etc. Will be reinstalling original memory, see if the problem persist.
Cheers
TomThe RAM must be stated by the manufacturer to be compatible with a mid-2012 MacBook Pro.
Just because it says:
1600 MHz PC3-12800 DDR3L SDRAM SO-DIMMs (204-pin)
Does not mean it is compatible. It must say mid-2012 MacBook Pro RAM. -
Mid 2012 macbook pro glitching, freezing, overheating
Starting a few weeks ago, I noticed a change in my mid 2012 macbook pro. My laptop was losing charge EXTREMELY quickly, I would charge the laptop to 100%, and just an hour later (after not using it, but the lid closed and it was sleeping) it would be up to 60% charge, then when not in sleep and on, it would lose energy extremely quickly. I always make sure that unecessary background apps are not running--so that was not the problem. This problem went away after a week, but it was the first signal that something was wrong with my laptop.
Next, the laptop was having problems with waking up from sleep, I did an SMC reset and this problem was fixed.
After that, the laptop started glitching (static and banded lines on the bottom of the screen) and making this clicking noise when I was streaming video fullscreen on Netflix. I thought at first, that this was a problem with Silverlight, and reinstalled the silverlight plugin (several times). Then I noticed that the computer would glitch when I was streaming full screen on Netflix and picked up the laptop (moved it from a flat surface). This signaled to me that the problem was perhaps not software, but a hardware issue. I verified the disk and did a permissions report and neither were curative.
Further support that the problems are with hardware rather than hardware came to me when my computer presented itself with a fourth issue: the laptop, when being lifted or moved from a static surface, would sometimes freeze entirely and make the same clicking noise. This problem was not during fullscreen streaming, but had spread to when I was simply using more than one app at the same time (e.g. having Chrome and Word open together). When this happenend, the only solution would be to power down the computer and restart.
Finally, while sleeping with the lid closed in my backpack, I hear a whirring noise--I pick up the laptop and it was hot to the touch, overheating with the fans running on high speed.
I have no clue what is going on. I have taken the computer to my university's mac shop and they have suggested it is a logic board issue and I should give the computer in. I have scoured the forum for an answer of what is happening and am determined to find one. So I pose the problem to you--any help would be appreciated. Thank you.Hardware Information:

Mid 2010 Macbook Pro "Your Computer was restarted because of a problem"
Hi guys,
Ever since I upgraded to Mountain Lion my Mid 2010 Macbook Pro has been randomly restarting itself and showing a grey sceen with the text "Your computer was restarted because of a problem."
I've googled and read all sorts of things saying remove everything from Login Items, it still happens. Everything I've tried has done nothing. Just in case it helps, here is my latest kernel panic log from Console:

Mid 2012 MacBook Air: fan won't run faster when overheated
mid 2012 MacBook Air, system (tried Mountain lion/Mavericks/Yosemite, all have the same problem)
WHAT HAPPENED:
The other day I was watching some flash video on the couch, and I heard the fan running like crazy. The laptop shut off 2 seconds later-- no warnings, just black out all of a sudden. (ps: I usually use it on the desk. Only used in bed/couch for a few times)
It won't start if I press the button immediately afterwards. Instead, it will restart itself after a few minutes, no matter what.
I shut it down and let it cool down for about an hour. From then on it wouldn't last more than 5 minutes when used heavily (Facetime, chrome together) and about an hour when used lightly (only one app like chrome). Then it shuts off without warning like before. The laptop felt really hot, and I couldn't hear the fan.
The battery drop down menu says "service battery", and doesn't disappear after a few restarts.
WHAT THE APPLE GENIUS SAID:
I took it to the Apple Store the next day, a genius ran a hardware test, and it showed no problem at all. After the test and restart, the "service battery" warning was gone too.
The genius said it seemed everything is ok. The battery only ran 159 cycles, and it's supposed to last 1000 cycles.
But he doesn't know why the laptop would shut down out of nothing. If we had apple care, they could bring it back and stress it out, to see whether it shuts off and find the problem. I just brought it home to see what happens.
WHAT I TRIED:
1. Max CPU: the fan doesn't react, still runs at 2000 rpm.
2. Hardware Test:
when the laptop is hot, it won't survive the test, shuts off during the test.
when it's cool, it passes the regular test in 1min30s, showing no problems.
when it's cool, the extended test cannot last 3min before it dies.
3. Fan test, it can run at maximum speed. In this case the CPU temperature will drop quickly.
4. The Enclosure Bottom, Memory Controller and the Mem Bank temperature doesn't seem to change. (I don't know if they are supposed to be that way...)
Please give me some advice about what you think the problem is, and what I can do about it. Thank you all so much!If it didn't show any problems in the Apple Store, maybe its your ambient temperature? Although even this shouldn't cause your machine to behave the way it is currently. You need to record it or something then show Apple the issue.

How to connect mid 2012 MacBook Pro to home theater system
Okay so I'm looking at purchasing a home theater system and was wanting to know the best way to connect my mid 2012 MacBook Pro to the home theater system and TV. I am wanting to play both movies (Netflix etc) and music. Will my MacBook play 5.1 surround sound to the home theater system? Whats the best way to connect this all up? MacBook audio to the home theater system via Digital Optical from the headphone port with a 3.5mm to toslink adapter and then video to the TV via HDMI cable from the thunderbolt port with thunderbolt to HDMI adapter? My thinking was to separate the video and audio to get the best picture and sound. Any help/advice on this would be greatly appreciated.
Will my MacBook play 5.1 surround sound to the home theater system?
Yes.
Whats the best way to connect this all up?
An AppleTV or any AirPlay-enabled AVR. AirPlay is wireless, though you could use wired Ethernet if you want to avoid all the potential problems associated with wireless. Make sure it specifically says AirPlay which is Apple's proprietary technology. There are quite a few of them to choose from today. Denon is one, I believe Pioneer, there may be others. Shop around. The AppleTV's price was recently reduced to $69 US and may actually be the most cost-effective solution, allowing you to research the best AVR for your needs. The AppleTV has both HDMI (audio and video) and optical audio outputs.
MacBook audio to the home theater system via Digital Optical from the headphone port with a 3.5mm to toslink adapter and then video to the TV via HDMI cable from the thunderbolt port with thunderbolt to HDMI adapter?
Way too complicated But if you really don't want to use AirPlay, you can purchase an inexpensive (< $10) Thunderbolt to HDMI adapter and an equally inexpensive (<$3) HDMI cable to any HDMI input on your AVR.
My thinking was to separate the video and audio to get the best picture and sound.
It makes absolutely no difference. HDMI and optical audio use completely identical digital audio signals. -
Can anyone give a list of upgradeable performance parts for a mid 2012 macbook pro 13"?
I have a non Retina display mid 2012 macbook pro that I want to do a home refurbishment and mass upgrade on, the processor and graphics cards are both good as is but RAM gets a bit bottlenecked with only 8gb, Id like to be able to replace the built in speakers and possibly upgrade the optical/super drive as well If thats not too large an Endeavor.
I'm mostly a comp work virgin, so I want to make sure what I want to do isn't too tricky

In order to simplify moving all my files from the previous mid-2012 macbook pro 15' when moving to my new late-2013 macbook pro, i superdup-ed the full hard-disk to an external ssd. Unfortunatelly the new mac resuses to boot from this external disk (i get the grey disk with a line over it). The external disk works just fine so if I boot the new mac from its internal SSD I can read/write the external disk without problems.
Old OS X is 10.9 as is the OS on the new mac.
What I need to do is to boot the new mac from the external ssd, use the same superduper to copy the external content onto the internal ssd.
How can I solve this issue?Welcome to Apple Support Communities
If you made a backup of your files with SuperDuper, use Migration Assistant (in /Applications/Utilities) to transfer your files from the external drive > http://pondini.org/OSX/MigrateLion.html It will create a new user account with the transferred files, so you may want to merge both user accounts > https://discussions.apple.com/docs/DOC-5472
The Late 2013 MacBook Pro uses a special OS X Mavericks version which makes OS X compatible with it, and older OS X versions do not work with it. That's the reason why you cannot start up from the external drive created from the Mid 2012 MacBook Pro -
Mid-2012 macbook pro gets kernel panics when waking from sleep
Hi all,
I got a new mid-2012 Macbook Pro running Lion (10.7.5) at the end of Oct which started kernel panicking pretty much from day one. The kernel panics only occur when the computer is put to sleep and reawaken after more than an hour or so has passed. I get a grey screen that eventually shows text like "Your computer was restarted because of a problem. Please wait a few seconds or press any key to continue" and then the OS boots up again. Bizarrely, this doesn't usually happen if the computer has only been asleep for a short time - i.e. 15 min or less.
Below is the kernel panic log, which seems to suggest there's an issue with the Nvidia GeForce GT 650M graphics card.
Anyone have any idea what the problem is? Advice is much appreciated.

Yosemite Upgrade on mid 2012 Macbook Pro
How does the Yosemite upgrade perform on Yosemite upgrade performance mid 2012 Macbook Pro with 2.5Ghz i5 processor and 16GB RAM?
I haven't had any problems on several upgrades. You should do this in advance as a precaution:
Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions - Yosemite, Mavericks, Mountain Lion or Lion
Boot to the Recovery HD:
Restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the COMMAND and R keys until the menu screen appears. Alternatively, restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the OPTION key until the boot manager screen appears. Select the Recovery HD and click on the downward pointing arrow button.
Repair
When the recovery menu appears select Disk Utility and press the Continue button. After Disk Utility loads select the Macintosh HD entry from the the left side list. Click on the First Aid tab, then click on the Repair Disk button. If Disk Utility reports any errors that have been fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported. If no errors are reported click on the Repair Permissions button. Wait until the operation completes, then quit Disk Utility and return to the main menu. Select Restart from the Apple menu. -
Memory(RAM) upgrade on a Mid-2012 MacBook Pro
Hello Apple fans and users. My Mid-2012 MacBook Pro 13" is a bit slow. It has 2x2GB DDR3 1600MHz Ram and when I open more than 4-5 tabs in Safari it becomes really really slow. So that's what's bothering me and I have decided that I need to upgrade my RAM to more GB's. I have iStat app and it shows me that more 3/4ths of the RAM is being used when I have more than 4-5 tabs open in Safari and when my iTunes is playing a song.
So Im from the Netherlands and what I found is this: http://www.alternate.nl/Corsair/4-GB-DDR3-1333/html/product/922656?tk=7&lk=9331
It even says MAC Memory. I find this good because it is supposed to be for a MAC, but my only concern is that my memory right now is 2x2GB 1600MHz, and the one that Im currently looking at(at the link) is only 1333MHz.
Do you guys think this might be a problem or it is bad or is it going to be a NOT SO GOOD upgrade? Im not very good with computers but from what I know 1333MHz is less than 1600MHz...
But I also found this -> http://www.alternate.nl/Kingston-ValueRAM/4GB-ECC-DDR3-1600/html/product/1118143 ?event=search
and it is 1600MHz, DDR3, 4GB BUT I AM NOT Sure if it's gonna work on my laptop because it is a MAC.
So what do you guys think? Which one should I get and why? Is there a difference between 1333MHz and 1600MHz? And what is it? How am I gonna feel the difference? As BobRz says, get the right speed, or you may have problems.

Can I capture video through a mini display port on a Mid 2012 MacBook Pro?
I want to run my xbox through a mini displayport adapter into my Mid 2012 MacBook pro to record gameplay. I understand that at one point the 27" iMac's supoorted this feature to an extent. I'm open to other options for inputs, ie: composite cables from the xbox or even VGA. I own a capture card already I'm just interested to see if there is a way around using it to save space and the mess of extra cables.

Hi all.
I need some help. I have recently installed a new Hard Drive in my Macbook and have re-installed Snow Leopard. Since doing so there have been a few things that haven't been quite the same.
1) Certain buttons decided they didnt want to work anymore. These being the Space Bar, the Tab key, all four arrow keys, Caps lock, Volume up, Eject, and a few others.
After putting up with this for a couple of weeks and looking at numerous forums, they all of a sudden came back to life (Hence why I'm actually able to type this message) THEN, they packed up again. Then started again, then packed again, and so on. They seem to have a mind of their own.
Please... does anyone know whats going on? Is it a hardware prob? Is it something to do with the way Ive installed the Hard Drive? Have I forgotten to do something?
2) Ever since my buttons initially came back to life, the "Do you want to restart you computer?" window keeps popping up every couple of minutes.
It's the window that says "Restart, Sleep, Cancel, Shut Down"
It's driving me insane and I can't help but think that the two probs are related.
If anyone out there has any ideas at all, they would be most welcome.
Many thanks in advance
MadDogSnapsHave you tried reinstalling the original drive? Same symptoms with it?
