Mid-2012 retina macbook pro nvidia gpu panics

I bought my mid-2012 retina macbook pro in September 2012. It is 8 months out of warranty. I always look after it and use it carefully. Since 2 weeks ago, I encountered the problems below,
1.turn into black screen after running for about 15 mins, but the system is still running because the keyboard is still functional. After reboot, i record the log as below, it shows that it is a GPU Panic.
2. display would not turn on after pressing the power button but can still hear the apple start up chime and the system keep running with the screen
off.
3. after erased the hard drive and re-installed Mavericks. Under a new installed system, it can run normally for about 1 day, after that especially after a shut down or restart, the problems above came back.
I am currently working in Thailand but I have no plan to go back to the US in a short period of time. I brought the laptop to the local apple service, they said it is certainly the logic board or GPU failure and the parts need to be replaced. The cost of the replacement is around half of the price that I paid for this laptop. I feel really disappointed so I called apple telephone service if there is anything that they can help. However, instead of helping me allocate the cause of these problems, the suggestion I received is to buy a new Mac Book and accept the fact that I am just unlucky in this case. This is the first time in my life to encounter mother board or GPU failure excluding artificial damage, they are supposed to be reliable espeically under the name of Apple. It is just so hard for me to accept it.
Below is the system message of the problem, it would be much appreciated if anyone can give me some suggestion that can help me to fix my problem at the lowest cost. Thank you very much.

Just started getting these too. The only workaround I've found online is disable the discrete graphics card using gfxCardStatus. I can't use my multiple monitors when using just the integrated graphics card, but it's allowed me to limp along until I have time to get into an Apple Store.

  • Can I use my Mid 2012 13" MacBook Pro to drive two displays?

I have a Mid 2012 13" MacBook Pro (NOT Retina - I wanted the optical drive...) connected to a 27" Thunderbolt Display. If I get a MiniDisplay Port <-> MiniDisplay Port Cable (and connect it between the Thunderbolt Port on the Thunderbolt Display, and the MiniDisplay Port on the iMac), will the MacBook Pro also be able to drive my 27" Mid 2010 iMac as an external Monitor?
If not, will the iMac be able to drive the Thunderbolt display?
I'm trying to get to documents side by side on the 27" monitor so I can move data between them - Word/Word, Word/Excel, etc.,
It would be nice to know the answer before I go to the store and drop the $ on the cable...
    Many thanks,
    Chris

After lots of reading, it seems it is possible (thanks for the link, OGELTHORPE), but I haven't been able to figure out the right cable configuration.
Confirmed my MacBook Pro (mid 2012) supports two Thunderbolt Displays
Confirmed my iMac (mid 2010) supports Target Display Mode
Confirmed this is possible based on the below...
    6. Can I use an Apple Thunderbolt Display and an iMac in Target Display Mode to act as two additional displays for my Thunderbolt-equipped Mac?
Yes. If your Thunderbolt-equipped Mac supports two Thunderbolt displays this is possible. Your Thunderbolt-equipped Mac will need to be connected to your Apple Thunderbolt display and the iMac will need to be connected to the Thunderbolt port of the Apple Thunderbolt display. Not all iMacs support Target Display Mode. See Target Display Mode: Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ) for more information. Once connected, place the iMac into Target Display Mode to enable it as the second external display.
    Notes:
Make sure the Thunderbolt Display is connected to your Thunderbolt-equipped Mac and is being recognized and used by the Thunderbolt-equipped Mac before connecting the iMac to the Thunderbolt display.
If the iMac is placed in the Thunderbolt chain before the Apple Thunderbolt Display, the Thunderbolt display will work as an external display for the iMac and it will stay active as an external display for the iMac, but it will not function with the main Thunderbolt-equipped Mac using the iMac's display.
To use an iMac in Target Display Mode when connected to an Apple Thunderbolt Display, the iMac must be Thunderbolt-enabled, and a Thunderbolt cable must be used (not a mini-DP cable).
The bulletpoint that worries me is the last one. I have tried with both a mini display port cable AND a thunderbolt cable, but the last bulletpoint seems to suggest that this is not possible if the iMac is NOT a Thunderbolt enabled iMac (which mine isn't). It does however say elsewhere that my iMac acting in TDM mode acts as a Thunderbolt Display, so it's all a bit confusing!!! It seems that my MacBook Pro can't drive both displays; so now I'm trying to figure out how to get the iMac to treat my Thunderbolt display as a second monitor.
    Fingers crossed...

  • Multiple hard drive failures on multiple mid-2012 13" macbook pros

I have a mid-2012 13" MacBook Pro (500GB hard drive), which is actually the third one I've owned in two years. The hard drive on my first laptop failed and was replaced at least five times (I lost count) before Apple agreed to just replace the machine after about a year and a half. Thinking that was the end of it, I was unpleasantly surprised when the second machine's hard drive failed after just a month. Luckily, Apple was willing to replace it right away since it had only been a month. Now it's been about four months since I've gotten my third laptop, and its hard drive has just failed.
At this point, it seems like the problem is something I'm doing, but I don't see how that's possible - I don't handle my laptop any differently than the average college student, and many of my friends who own MacBooks haven't had this issue. I don't have above average knowledge of computers, and Apple representatives haven't offered any solutions aside from just replacing the hard drive, so I know that that's exactly what they're going to do if I take it to the Genius Bar again. I know enough to see that the issue isn't the hard drive, and I'm so fed up now that I just want to get rid of this laptop altogether. Does anyone know of anything that could be causing the problem, and is there anything else I can do?

The range of reported problems using an external monitor or projector and the mid-2012 MBP is dizzying. The only way I've found to use an external monitor is to shutdown and plug the monitor in prior to rebooting. Any attempt to attach a monitor (or projector) after I'm up and running fails. All the trashing of plist files, resetting PRAM, etc etc. doesn't solve anything.
And turn off energy savings. If my MBP goes to sleep, it won't find the external monitor when waking. I have to reboot again.
Bush league problems. Our only encouragement is that it appears to be a software issue, since booting into Windows solves the problem. So we can hope for a fix. I'm pretty disgusted with Apple here. They've had a lot of time to fix this since 10.8 was released. I've been an exclusive Apple user since 1984. But as they've gotten fat and sassy, their quality control and responsive service has sunk. I can put up with their secretive, non responsive approach if things get fixed. But if they don't, they're headed for the ash heaps.

Can i expand the SSD on my late 2012 Retina Macbook Pro from the current 128GB to 256GB or more?

You can look here to see if they have anything available for your model, but be advised even opening a Retina voids the warranty.

  • HT2952 Bus power while sleeping on mid-2012 15" MacBook Pro?

I have an external hard drive connected to the Firewire 800 port with a FW800-FW800 cable. It is bus-powered. On my previous Mac, a mid-2009 13" MacBook Pro, the drive would remain powered while the computer was asleep - it would spin down, but the lights on the drive would remain on, and it would spin up again when the computer woke up. Perfect. But my mid-2012 15" MacBook Pro cuts off bus power in sleep mode, so the drive no longer wakes up with the computer. Both are running OS X 10.8.3.
The FireWire Ports: Specifications KB article says, "Output power is always available if the Apple computer is connected to AC power or is running (even on battery). Output power can be used to power FireWire hubs and devices such as disk drives and audio break-out boxes that operate within the limits of the computer’s FireWire port." I don't know whether "always available" includes sleep mode.
The reason this is a problem is because when I wake up the computer, the drive remains off, so any applications that had open files from that drive get confused, changes lost, etc. Basically, it's a disturbance.
I have tried resetting the NVRAM and SMC on the newer MBP, but it didn't change this behavior.

Thing is, at least I experience a very similar issue (as have many others) with AC Power. The OP doesn't really state whether on battery or AC power.
I had my 2011 MBP for over 2 years and my MOTU Ultralite audio interface for the same period. For the entire 2 years, my MOTU would be conneceted via FW800 and bus-powered. It would not lose power when my computer went to sleep (default Snow Leopard settings, going more than 24 hours without being touched). A few months ago, a new piece of software asked me to upgrade to Mountain Lion and, since that upgrade, I've had problems with my MOTU losing power when connected via FW800, all while connected to AC power... for no good reason.
At least while on AC power, I would think "always available" means always available regardless of sleep mode.
Like the OP, I have not had succes with NVRAM or SMC resets.
In browsing other threads, I see that some have had some success resetting permissions.

  • Help With Kernel Panic in Mid 2012 13" Macbook Pro

    I have a 13" Mid-2012 Macbook Pro.
    2.5 GHz Intel Core i5 / 8GB Memory
    OS X 10.9.5
Recently I have been getting kernel panics / grey screens of death.  From the Console logs, it appears I have had four kernel panics since September 22.
I am not aware of any particular thing I can do to produce the error.
    Some things I've tried:
Disk Utility (this generally returns no errors.  However, once it asked me to boot to recovery mode to run Disk Utility there)
Disk Utility in recovery mode (No errors)
single user mode fsck -fy (No errors)
Apple Hardware Test, extended mode (No errors)
Observed Console logs for kernel panics (I am not sure how to parse these)
    Other details about the setup/environment:
    No peripherals
I did see one update About the OS X Mavericks v10.9.5 Update that I had not installed until tonight.  Since September 22, I have installed 3 such updates.
    No anti-virus
    Hard drive is mostly empty
    File Vault is on
I hope this is not poor form but I thought I would post some snippets from my kernel panic logs here to help with assessment.    I removed some information that looked like it might include personal identifiers and also the "loaded kexts" portions because of their length.   If those are helpful I could post them.
Any help diagnosing this problem would be appreciated.

Thank you.  below I have included the full panic logs, including kernel extensions.
I did run and pass a memory test last night, but thank you for noting that this may not be conclusive.
Do you see anything else notable in the logs, that would suggest anything other than a memory problem?  What would be the best way to test it?  Last night I used Rember .  Assuming that you don't identify anything else, would the next step be simply memory replacement?
    Logs below.
    Thanks!

  • MacBook Pro 13 inch (mid 2012) v MacBook Pro 15 inch (mid 2014) for After Effects and Premiere

    Hi everyone,
I'm interested in working with After Effects CS6 and Premiere CS6 probably creating quite heavily layered files and experimenting with and combining effects. (I also work with Photoshop and Illustrator.)
My workplace allows me to use a 2.5 GHz Intel Dual Core i5 / MacBook Pro 13 inch (mid 2012, non retina) with hard disk and integrated graphics card (Intel HD Graphics 4000 512MB). I understand this Mac can be maxed out at 16GB of RAM. (Official Apple specs I realise say 8GB RAM is the max for this computer but I've looked into this thoroughly and have confirmed that 16GB is in fact possible.)
I'm considering purchasing one of the new Haswell based MacBook Pro (mid 2014) models for myself.
If I do, I'll get the retina 15 inch / Intel Quad Core i7 / 16GB RAM / Intel Iris Pro Graphics / NVIDIA GeForce GT 750M / 1TB Flash Storage.
I realise there is a big difference between these two machines in terms of their specs - the 15 inch with the dedicated GPU will be far more suited to motion graphics work than the lower spec machine with integrated graphics card.
Currently, my understanding is that After Effects CS6 and Premiere CS6 do not support the NVIDIA GeForce GT 750M but from research on the net I believe it's possible to add this video card to the list of supported cards within the respective applications, forcing them to recognise and use it.
Having read about the upcoming Broadwell chip, which I think may be capable of supporting 32GB RAM (possibly coming in Q2 2015 from the various websites I've visited) I wonder if it is worth holding off my purchase, and maxing out my older 13 inch laptop in order to run After Effects and Premiere for the time being.
If I waited for Broadwell based 15 inch MacBooks I think its likely they'll be expandable to 32GB RAM, making the computer a better long term investment.
eg if Adobe increase minimum/recommended memory requirements for their software in the next few years. While I don't know for sure this will happen, it does seem quite likely at some stage. The 2014 15 inch MacBook - while an excellent computer at the moment - could potentially be slightly limited with regard to future Adobe software releases as its max RAM is 16GB.
I realise I could potentially look at a high end iMac if memory is a concern, but I prefer the portability of a laptop so I'm restricting myself to portable options for the moment.
    What I'm wondering is -
If I install the 13 inch 2.5GHz i5 laptop with 16GB RAM as is possible, how would it perform when running After Effects and Premiere? It currently has 4GB and it very quickly runs out of memory meaning playback of goes very slowly when previewing complex files in the timeline. This necessitates rendering of small test sections of the timeline to see it at the correct frame rate. Would the move from 4GB RAM to 16GB RAM give me a noticeable improvement in this regard? If so then this is tempting as I don't have to pay for it - I think my workplace will cover the cost of extra RAM. And then I can wait till next year to buy my own high end laptop.
The 15 inch 2.8GHz i7 quad processor has Iris Pro and dedicated NVIDIA GeForce GT750M with 2GB RAM. I would be paying the full cost myself.
I realise rendering would be faster with this Mac but would I see a noticeable improvement over the maxed out 13 inch laptop when previewing multi layered After Effects and Premiere compositions / sequences within the timeline? I like the idea of being able to preview footage in real time as I'm editing as it saves time and I think it makes the process easier generally.
Any thoughts welcome and thanks very much in advance for your time and advice.
    Kind regards,
    John

"It currently has 4GB and it very quickly runs out of memory meaning playback of goes very slowly when previewing complex files in the timeline."
"In this case yes, I can most certainly see a performance increase as your machine is still not too old and a RAM increase will help it for sure I just can't tell you by how much.
I own the same machine as yours (except for mine having 2.9ghz and i7, and 8GB of ram) so I think it's safe to say for me that the RAM increase will help you for sure."
That statement of mine answers your question you just asked

  • Multiple problems with my 2012 Retina Macbook Pro

    Hi,
I just got my 2012 Retina MBP with 16GB RAM and 768 GB HD. OS X Lion 10.7.4 is running and all requisite updates are installed. I am quite surprised at what I think are bugs that are associated with this MBP. Here are my issues. Hopefully someone can assist. Today being the 4th of July, their phone support is offline.
    1. The trackpad does not work well after I open the trackpad app via preferences. I cannot scroll or do Mission Control or Expose for instance.
Yes, I have installed the following update to no avail: http://support.apple.com/kb/DL1543
No, I do not see the "Macbook Pro Trackupade Update" as described within the following article: http://support.apple.com/kb/TS4297? viewlocale=en_US&locale=en_US
    2. Whenever I swipe with my 4 fingers to get to the next screen, the screen darkens and becomes completely black. This is highly unusual and does not happen with my Macbook Air or my imac.
    3. I have about 4 Safari windows running on seperate screens and this seems to bring my machine to a crawl. This again has never been a problem with my MBA or my IMAC.
    Pls Help!!
P.S. I will pay the "Geniuses" a visit tomorrow.

    Regarding point#2:
The Safari issue has abated however I observed that the "Windowserver" process is consistently taking up 90-100% of the CPU and thus bringing my machine to a crawl. It seems like others are experiencing similar issues. Here is one instance where this person's "windowserver" process is crashing.

This is very disappointing and underwhelming.

  • 2012 Retina Macbook Pro WiFi problem

I have a 2012 Macbook Pro with Retina display that's been upgraded to Mountain Lion.  It is having WiFi connection issues.
    Specifically,
    1.  Upon startup it will not find the network.  I have to turn off the wifi and turn it back on to have it find the network.  Annoying.  It used to happen only intermittently; now it happens every start up.  It's getting worse.
    2.  It will randomly every few hours drop the wifi connection, requiring me to turn off the wifi and turn it back on.
I've tried the one fix people on here suggested: deleting the wifi network profile I use and putting it back in.
    Didn't make a difference.
Has anyone found a better fix?
I'm disappointed that Apple released this version of OS with such a glaring problem.  A laptop without a reliable wifi connection is a complete waste of money.

Happening to me too. Macbook Pro Retina Display with Mountain Lion. I'm experience occassional drops while actively working on my Macbook that requires me to turn off Wireless and turn it back on to get a connection. I've noticed this twice in two days.
I'm had my Macbook for about a week and immediately installed Mountain Lion, so I don't have a previous version to compare with. I could turn off Bluetooth at the moment, because I'm not using any Bluetooth devices, but it is likely I will be getting a bluetooth device in the future, then this workaround won't be useful.
I hope Apple can come up with a software patch?

  • 2007 macbook pro nvidia gpu failure?

    Hi,
What are the symptoms of a failed nvidia gpu on the 2007/2008 macbook pros? My 2007 machine has been displaying a pattern of green "pixels" over the entire screen while stopping to respond to keyboard/trackpad input. Is it likely that this is due to the GPU failing?
Thanks for any advice or similar stories.
    SL

Thanks, I saw this page and called a local apple service center. They said that they would need to have my machine for a while to run a diagnostic test, but if it turned out not to be the GPU that I would be on the hook for a $47.50 service charge. It it was the GPU, the apple would pick up the bill and the repair charges. I'm trying to get an idea of how likely my machine has a faulty GPU before leaving it with them. In addition to the machine becoming unresponsive and a pattern of big green pixels appearing, it develops some additional symptoms:
    - seems to get hot with the fans going loud
    - it takes many tries to restart
    - while trying to restart, green pattern of pixels shows up in the apple logo and the spinning indicator (when this happens, the machine does not start up successfully, just keeps trying)
    - during on of the "freezes" with the pattern of big green pixels, it appeared to continue to copy files (started to copy a big directory from on external disk to another) and did a time machine backup
    - when finally successful in starting up again, iStat Pro showed that the GPU was running at about 70 C

  • My Mid 2012 13" Macbook Pro is not charging and not recognizing the A/C adapter.  Is there anything I can do?

The light on the A/C adapter does not turn on when I plug it into the macbook pro.  I tried resetting the SMC, but the Macbook Pro still does not recognize the charger.  Is the charging port broken? Is there anything I can do to fix it before finally taking it in to the Genius Bar? I have also tried using multiple chargers so I know there is no problem with the charger.  Will it cost a lot as my macbook is three months out of warranty?

    Welcome to Apple Support Communities
If you have got a different charger, try plugging it to the Mac and see if it charges. Also, check that your charger (the one you have got now) light appears in orange or green when you plug it in. If it doesn't turn on, it's possible that the charger is not working correctly.
I recommend you to take the Mac and the charger to an Apple Store or reseller. If the problem is the charger, the repair will be cheap, but if the problem is the logic board or the battery connector, it may be expensive

  • Torn between buying either the New (Mid 2012) 13" Macbook Pro or the New (Mid 2012) 13" Macbook Air

Which notebook do you think has more "life" in it?  Which will be the more outdated machine sooner i.e. which one do you think Apple will stop supporting and allowing you to update to the most current OS?  I'm going to get the base model of either and probably upgrade to the 8G of RAM since it's only $100 bucks more.
From my research thus far it seems to pan out like this:
Pro: More HD space, but slower hard drive.  Screen isn't as nice.  More powerful processor but I have read that performance is somehow equal to the Air (this is where I'm a little confused).
Air: Less HD space, but the SSD makes the machine open apps and such faster.  Prettier screen.  Equal performance even though the processor is not as powerful (again ?????).  It's just cooler looking and perhaps Apple will be phasing out the base level Macbooks in favor of Airs in the future (just a guess).
I will mostly use the computer at home, but it's looking likely I'll be traveling for work soon.  Even then the notebook probably won't leave my extended stay.  I will mostly be using it for fun: web surfing, streaming movies to my xbox via Vuze (I usually delete movies/shows after 1 viewing), email, ect.  I don't do any photo or movie editing but I may mess around with Garageband a bit.  Any other words of wisdom on choosing between the two systems, or if for my needs you think I should go with something completely different, would be helpful as well
Thanks so much for your help! - James

A year ago it would have been a 'no contest' situation in my mind. the MBP would bethe choice hands down.  Since you can get SSD replacements/upgrades from OWC (and probably others as well) the Air looks far more attractive.  SSD prices are going to fall quite rapidly and what might be a prohibitory expensive upgrade today will not be so in the near future.
I have come to accept (grudgingly) that the future of an internal DVD drive is limited, but the slim ones that Apple has available convinces me that is no longer such a big issue.  I do not subscribe to the argument that all downloads can always be done via the Internet.  No communications protocol is 100% perfect as is the hardware supporting it.
You are the final arbiter in this decision and I will not endorse one over the other.  Simply put, either one is a good choice from my perspective.
    Ciao.

  • Why does my 2012 Retina Macbook Pro's trackpad become extremely unresponsive after I plug in a USB mouse? The only trackpad command that works is the left click, I can't select text or press down and hold the trackpad to do anything else until I restart.

My trackpad becomes REALLY unresponsive after I plug in a USB mouse. It seems like the cursor is broken and stuck on a permanent left click or something. I'm unable to select text or do any other sort of action that requires you to hold down the trackpad and drag. Mouse icons don't update as I scroll over different text and links. The trackpad is usually stuck in this unresponsive state until I restart my macbook which is extremely inconvenient if I have to do this after every time I use a USB mouse. Are there any fixes to this?

    Melophage,
I don't leave it outside. Usually when I leave it overnight, I do so under the same conditions as when I leave it plugged in, and this morning I only left it for about an hour in my house and it did the same thing.
    LowLuster,
I actually have a new hard drive I bought a while back and have been meaning to switch it out with the one that's in there now. I'll follow your instruction, then make the switch I had planned on and report back.

  • Mid 2012 13" Macbook Pro Windows 7 Professional 32bit, which Boot Camp Drivers?

    Hi,
I've managed to partition my Hard drive, assigning 100GB to the Windows Partition. I've installed Windows 7 Professional 32 Bit SP1 and have managed to install MS Office 2007 (I've not installed any other updates as I can't connect to the internet over wireless yet as I've not installed the drivers).
I've downloaded three sets of of Boot Camp Drivers and have been unable to get any to work. The ones I've downloaded are:
    Boot Camp Support Software 5.0.5033
    Boot Camp Support Software 4.0.4033
    Boot Camp Support Software 4.1.4586
I now understand that v5 is the wrong version to use, however for both of the "version 4's", it is telling me that they are incompatible with this version of Windows... So I am very confused... I've unzipped the archives and have tried to run the set-up (and even tried the individual drivers)...
Does anyone know where I'm going wrong? I don't know which drivers I should be installing?
    Thanks,
    Alex

I've managed to solve it! Basically, it all came down to installing the "correct" package. I had foolishly assumed that the highest version number would support all the latest product.... However in the end I had to install this package:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/DL1635
Basically, you need to scroll down to the bottom of the page (I assumed all the pages were the same as they have the same introductions), and open up the "system requirements" tab and check to see if your machine is on that list. Once you've found one with your machine, download and run that. Remember to extract the folder from the zipped archive first. It won't run if it's "still within the archive"...
    Cheers,
