Mid 2014 13" rMBP - Image Persistence
Good Morning,
Last night I came across an image persistence issue that seems to plague most rMBP users that have been supplied with an LG Panel.
I'd like to confirm that this issue is still present in Apple's most recent iteration of the Macbook Pro (Mid 2014). I purchased this 13" rMBP just under a month ago, I was hoping to improve my productivity with this purchase only to find it has hindered it further. I work with illustrator and photoshop, sometimes both at the same time. I've noticed switching between applications that there seems to be a faint silhouette of the illustrator window. When I first noticed this issue I told myself "There's no way that's burn-in, this is clearly not a plasma display and it's 2014" After a prompt restart, the faint silhouette was still there and all I could feel was frustration and complete regret after making such an expensive purchase. The feeling I had at the Apple store was similar to when I purchased my Canon 5D, you save up all this money and expect a premium product. Only this time around, I'm not quite as joyful about my purchase. The faint silhouette overlays my photos, and can be a problematic during post production. Although the silhouette may only be visible for minutes at a time before it completely disappears, this has caused me to walk away from my Mac. Which is something I have been trying to avoid, and it was working until last night.
My question is, has LG made any changes to their most recent production of Retina displays?
Do 13" rMBPs come with Samsung displays?
What are my options outside of the 14-day return window?
I'd like to avoid repair, one time I brought in my iPad and the genius was practically sliding and dropping my iPad on the genius bar. I know that Apple tries to set the bar when it comes to personal computing, and in some cases customer service. So, is it wrong of me to expect quality from a premium manufacturer?
Thank you.
No, I did not misread, it died in 4 hours and 20 mins.
That sounds better. You confused me with:
...only 4:49 minutes remaining.
My science-major mind saw that as 4 minutes 49 seconds.
Still, you should get more runtime. Here is another Apple article that helps with battery life and heating issues:
Runaway applications can shorten battery runtime, affect performance, and increase heat and fan activity - Apple Support
The article was written before OS 10.9 and 10.10, so you need to make a change in Step 3 for 10.10. To make the required change from "My Processes" to All Processes," you now need to use Activity Monitor's "View" menu:
Another thing that is not clear in the article is that you will not get good results if you run the test immediately after a restart. Use the computer normally for about a day so that any runaway processes are activated, quit any apps you launched, then run the test.

Mid 2014 13" rMBP full charge gives 4:49 minutes of use
Hello-
This is my first Macbook purchase. It is 2 weeks old, refurbished from Apple. rMBP 13" 3.0 GHz i7 16gb 128. I received it and it was at 53% with 4 cycles. It adds cycles without even being plugged in to charge. It looses about 1% a minute. I have turned off: location, blue tooth, all peripherals are taken off, no programs added, auto bright off, brightness turned down. After a full charge it said full charge a 100% and only 4:49 minutes remaining. I am not a Macbook expert, so I am asking: is 4:49 on a full charge normal for 2014 Macbook, and is there anything else I should be looking at that I am missing? Thank you for the help. No, I did not misread, it died in 4 hours and 20 mins.

Bootcamp Installation rMBP Mid 2014 Chaos
I am trying to install Bootcamp on my friends mid-2014 13" rMBP without success.
So far we have spent 2 nights and 6 hours working on this. I am convinced there are problems with Apple's Bootcamp Utility and/or firmware.
After successfully creating the USB installer drive, and partitioning the mac, we cannot boot from the USB drive.
I am an advanced user and have tried everything, including different ISO's, PRAM resets, booting from the CD with Superdrive, the whole deal.
What's disappointing is that I'm helping my mate out who is new to the Mac, he still occasionally needs Windows and this was a major feature that led him to switch. It doesn't make Apple look good. Obviously, from reading the forums, this is a common and well known issue with the last two generations of rMBP.
We are currently deployed overseas and don't have access to an Apple Store or genius.
I know these are user-forums, but I assume Apple does monitor these from time to time, they would be stupid not to.

Black boot screen and startup manager on mid 2014 rMBP after upgrading to Yosemite
After upgrading to Yosemite I'm experiencing black booting process. Moreover, I noticed that the startup manager, which we access by holding the option key, has the black background too. I didn't like the Yosemite, so I downgraded back to Mavericks, but I still have the startup manager with the black background and the initial screen during the startup sound is black too, and after that the grey screen with the Apple logo comes up, which is typical for Mavericks. I want my startup manager to have the grey background as before. And also, before there was the grey screen during the startup sound, not the black one. How to revert all this to the previous state? I'm experiencing all this on my rMBP, 13-inch, mid-2014.
I want to revert because after downgrading back to Mavericks my rMBP started freezing terribly, especially on youtube, ebay and app store. And it's not just the web browsing, it's freezing when navigating in finder too. I know there are many experienced users here, so I hope that somebody can help me with this. Before upgrading to Yosemite my machine was running flawlessly.nobody?

Windows 8.1 on 13" rMBP Mid 2014 unusable. Slow, choppy audio/video
I've installed Windows 8.1 Pro on my new 13" rMBP Mid 2014 and it runs terribly slow. The mouse movement is choppy and I can't even listen to music, which is horrible. The computer often as if it's running at 100% capacity - even though it's almost idle. If I click a link or press a button the audio track skips and does so randomly, too. On OSX it runs at least 10 times as well/flawless. I saw that some people said Retina laptops are slower with Windows because of the screen, but I'm not even using the Retina screen. I am on a external monitor with a disabled screen.
Check out this DPC Latency Report:
Troubleshooting attempts:
- I've checked if there's an update for the audio drivers available and just reinstalled the current one.
- I've reinstalled the newest Boot Camp Support Software.
- My OSX version (the one before Yosemite) is fully updated.
- I've disabled many devices in the device manager (network, audio, sound, etc) to see if it's a faulty driver, but couldn't find it.
Do you also have similar problems with Windows 8.1 on the newest MBP? What can I do to fix this?
ThanksOn an older 13" 2012 MBP with Intel HD4K. (and an SSD - if there are no paging/swapping issues otherwise), it shows

Last week, bought mid-2014 base model rMPB 13.3. Display was warm yellowish with greenish tint. Compared with store models, which all had cool blue. Replacement had same issue, so I asked for refund. Display looked worse than my late 2010 base model 13" MBA. Want to stay with Apple, but am concerned that all, if not most, of the mid-2014s have this defect. Can anyone corroborate?
Anybody???

New Macbook Pro (mid 2014, retina, 15 inch) wont wake up
Computer is about a month old, and the past two mornings it hasn't been able to wake up when I opened it. On both occasions I have to plug into a power supply, and hold the power key until it restarts. Upon restarting I see that I have ample battery... this morning the battery was at 82%. Any ideas as to what could be causing this?
Thanks
Also, this morning before I restarted it I noticed that when I pressed the caps lock button the light turned on, leading me to believe that the computer was on, just the screen wasn't waking up.Hello Linc Davis,
I have the exact same problem, MacBook Pro 15'' mid 2014 (everything updated via Appstore) and some times won't wake up from sleep. I've done a SMC reset a couple times and the problem disappear for 3 weeks. Then, randomly it appears again out of the blue.
I don't see any "com.apple.message.signature: Platform Failure" event, meaning that maybe is not a hardware issue.
I copied the log from "Sleep Wake Failure" event, here it is:

Trouble installing Windows 8.1 on MacBook Pro Retina mid 2014
Hi everyone
I recently bought a MacBook Pro Retina (mid 2014, 15", 2.8GHz, 1TB SSD) and wanted to install Windows 8.1 on it via bootcamp.
I have an official .ISO package of Windows 8.1 (it's x64, I checked), got it from MS Dreamspark as a student, and a valid serial number for it, of course.
Burned the image on a 16gb flash drive via bootcamp and proceeded to install. When asked by windows installer which partition to install on, selected bootcamp and clicked 'format', as it was recommended to do in various instructions on the internet (as it wouldn't install without formatting, I tried). The installation went good and finished, but immedeatly after that the installer gave me a notification "Impossible to update computer loading configuration, installation cancelled" (maybe it's not exactly like that, translated as accurately as I could, I'm installing windows in Russian).
I tried it twice, each time re-burning the installation drive. Got the same error each time.
All the software (OS X, bootcamp, etc.) is up to date, the macbook shouldn't have any problems as it was bought just a few days ago.
How can I solve this problem?yes sorry if it ruin the ending of one of the youtube clips you will be witching if you have problems as how you install windows in bootcamp

No Trackpad / Keyboard on Windows 7 Installation on mid-2014 15" Retina MacBook Pro
Hello,
Although there is a similar thread regarding this -- this applies to a newly released mid-2014 15" Retina MacBook Pro and the solution posted in the original thread does not work for this newer model.
I am attempting to install Windows 7 Professional 64-bit on a mid-2014 15" Retina MacBook Pro. (Running Mavericks 10.9.5) I Have both an original Windows 7 Install DVD and a downloaded ISO file as well.
PLEASE NOTE: That because I have need for multiple partitions on the SSD drive, I am not able to use Boot Camp Assistant to do the actual install. I have accomplished this a number of times in the past without any issues during or after the install. I have an MS-DOS(FAT) partition ready to go.
When I restart from the Windows 7 install DVD I get to the "Choose Language" screen and I have no trackpad or keyboard. A wired USB Mouse does not work either
I am not able to create an install USB drive for this model because Boot Camp Assistant gets to the "Download the latest Windows support software from Apple" task it gives an error message "Can't install the software because it is not currently available from the Software Update server" (NOTE: Using Boot Camp Assistant to ONLY "Download the latest Windows support software from Apple" as I get the same error message when attempting to do that.
It is my understanding based on the Apple article http://support.apple.com/kb/HT5634 that I need to download the driver software directly from Apple with the link they provide. I DID successfully download the Windows support software from Apple following the instructions in that article. However, I am not aware of any way to include that downloaded software when using Boot Camp Assistant to create a USB install drive.
I tried the trick with the USB drive as explained in apple article http://support.apple.com/kb/ts4599 but even with a freshly formatted MS-DOS(FAT) USB drive in the USB port on the left of the MacBook Pro and the Apple USB Optical Drive plugged into the USB port on the right side of the MacBook Pro, I still have no Trackpad or keyboard when I get to the first screen of the Windows installation.
I spent the last two days searching posts here and in general and only end up more baffled than before . . .
I am as positive as possible that the USB drives I am using are USB 2 and NOT USB 3. Although I guess that does not matter if I can't use Boot Camp Assistant to create a Windows installer that includes the Windows drivers for the MacBook Pro Hardware . . .
Some of the posts suggest that the Windows drivers from Apple need to be included on a USB install drive created with Boot Camp Assistant. That appears to be impossible at the moment if the Software Update Server does not contain them. I am confused as to why the are available directly from Apple http://support.apple.com/kb/DL1721 but they are not available when using Boot Camp Assistant????
Am I missing something??? Is this just a matter of waiting for Apple to add the necessary drivers to the Software Update server??? (It has only been two months since this MacBook Pro was released)
Has anyone successfully installed Windows 7 Professional 64-bit on a mid-2014 MacBook Pro running Mavericks???
Any guidance would be greatly appreciated . . .
John1. I have tried copying the Keyboard/Trackpad/Mouse drivers to the $WinPEDriver$ directory with mixed success on a 2012 MBP.
2. My experience is based on a 2013 rMBP. You may be able to use an Apple USB Keypad/Mouse to better success.
3. See http://www.macworld.com/article/2460820/macbook-pro-mid-2014-review-minor-update -offers-slightly-better-cpu-performance.html for HW differences between the two machines.
4. If you have access to a 2013 rMBP, I can suggest trying to build the USB on that and working with the USB to see if you can make it install Windows. the rMBP 2014 and rMBP 2013 have the same HW, except some CPU changes. You can also try building the USB at the nearest Apple store, if possible.
5. There is a section in AutoUnattend.xml, which is supposed to install all drivers in $WinPEDriver$ (see this http://support.microsoft.com/kb/2686316 )

Macbook Pro Retina Image Persistence
I'm experiencing fairly bad screenghosting on my Macbook Pro Retina display (15 inch, Mid 2011) and the last time I took it to be repaired the Apple Store had no openings for repair anytime soon. This model has an LG screen, prone to image persistence. I assumed I would go back another day to get it fixed, since then it has gotten much worse to the point where I need to take this in very soon. Because of this reason I decided to check my coverage. My one-year limited warranty expires on August 7th, 2013. It is currently 12:05am August 7th. Do I have all of today to get it dealt with? Will they cover this type of issue past warranty because of manufacturing fault? Am I out of luck?
You'll only know if you take your machine in TODAY. No one here from Apple so we can't conjecture what their response will be.
If you're lucky, you'll get a Samsung display without the pink/yellow tint.
Call immediately.

Is KVM VGA Passthrough Possible on Macbook Pro Mid 2014?
I've been using Arch on and off for a couple years on different hardware, and this time I'm trying to get it to work semi-flawlessly on my mid 2014 Macbook Pro. My Linux skills are meager, so I need some help understanding if VGA passthrough is possible on this machine, and if it is, how to set it up. I have hope that it might work after reading this blog and the Arch forums. An outline of my current setup follows. I will also document progress and research for anyone who might want to try this in the future.
Here are the specifications for this machine:
Processor: 2.5 GHz Intel Core i7
Memory: 16 GB 1600 MHz DDR3
Graphics: Intel Iris Pro 1536 MB, Nvidia GT 750M 2 GB
I have successfully dual-booted Mac OS X Yosemite and Arch with EFI on a btrfs partition using this blog and the wiki as starting points. Somlo's research also helped. All the basic functionality works (networking, WiFi, etc.), and I am able to boot the physical Arch partition as a Virtualbox VM with the help of the wiki. However, I'm having trouble with getting the integrated Intel graphics to work. The following command:
lspci | grep VGA
prints the Nvidia card specifications, and nothing about the Intel graphics.
Reading this blog, it looks like someone had to apply a "grub gmux" patch to grub to disable the Nvidia card at boot. I feel uncomfortable installing anything other than the official Arch packages, so I have to know if installing a patched grub is still necessary, and if installing it would still allow me to use VGA passthrough in KVM.
My ambitious to-do list looks like this:
1. Dual-boot Mac OS X and Arch with btrfs. -done
2. Setup the physical Arch partition to boot in Virtualbox. -done
3. Get Intel graphics to work on Arch ideally with OpenGL support. -done
4. Get Enlightenment working as the desktop environment on Arch. -done
5. Get Qemu+KVM to boot off the physical Mac OS X partition. -tbd
6. Enable VGA passthrough for Mac OS X from Qemu+KVM. -tbd
7. Install Windows as a VM in Qemu+KVM. -tbd
8. Enable VGA passthrough for Windows from Qemu+KVM. -tbd
9. Work and do research on Mac OS X from Arch, play hardcore 3D games on WIndows from Arch, play around with Arch, and live happily ever after. -tbd
Can anyone help me with this? Thanks in advance for any hints/input.
Edit:
The Ubuntu forums has something about getting the two graphics cards to be recognised by using `refind` instead of `grub`. I was able to set up `refind` to boot using the `efi-stub`, but:

I patched the kernel according the instructions in the said project's `readme`, and Arch is now able to see the two graphics cards and an extra Intel audio controller.

Also, I was able to fire up Enlightenment using the Intel graphics card and `0xbb`'s `gpu-switch` script. After using some post-installation tips from this, the computer started getting hot. I followed this thread to get it back to normal.
Edit:
So I finally got some time to experiment on this. I ended up installing Gnome 3 after trying out Enlightenment, KDE Plasma 5, and Cinnamon. I thought Gnome 3 and Cinnamon had the best Hi-DPI support of those four. Cinnamon's look was too much trouble for me to configure, so I ended up choosing Gnome 3.
To achieve the graphics card passthrough, I tried setting up and starting a VM in `virt-manager`, but starting the VM would cause Arch to freeze. Finally, I tried following the instructions on the wiki, this thread, and the Arch forums. I haven't yet tried booting the Windows installer, but the following are the steps I took so far:
1. Uninstall all `nvidia` drivers from my system.
2. Blacklist the `nouveau` driver.
3. Add `pci-stub` to the modules array in `mkinitcpio.conf`.
4. Recreate the `initramfs`.
5. Add `intel_iommu=on pci-stub.ids=10de:0fe9,10de:0e1b,8086:156c` to the `refind.conf` `options` line.
- These three IDs are ones for the Nvidia graphics, Nvidia sound, and the "Intel Corporation Device" (probably the HDMI port, or something related to the
ethernet card), which belong to the same "IOMMU group". What was curious was that a Gigabit ethernet controller would appear in the IOMMU group iff I had
an ethernet cable connected to my thunderbolt port. I don't know if I have to add the ID for this, but so far there are no complaints about it in `dmesg`.
6. Install `ovmf-svn` from the AUR.
6. Follow the "Binding a device to vfio-pci" section documented at https://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?id=162768.
7. Follow the "Testing if its working out" section documented at https://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?id=162768.
So far, the test at step 7 is failing -- I get a `vfio-pci 0000:01:00.0: Invalid ROM contents` complaint in `dmesg`, and I see a prompt in the `qemu` window. I'm supposed to be getting a black `qemu` window, and a prompt on an external monitor which I haven't connected yet. I read the comments on this blog about graphics card ROM and EFI compatibility, and it looks like my graphics card ROM can't be read. I also read that the graphics card ROM would only be read once by qemu/KVM and saved as a file for later use, so all I need to do to get around that is pass a snapshot of the ROM of the Nvidia GT 750M card to qemu/KVM. Apparently, "You can download the 750m rom files directly from Lenovo's website on the support page" according to this thread, but all I see is this. I will continue hunting around for a ROM file for this graphics card.

I have the same problem with a macbook pro retina 15 late 2013 (I7 - 2.3 Ghz, 16 GB, 512 SSD, GT750M) with windows 8.1 on bootcamp. The temperature is higher than yosemite. It gets easily at 80 celsius in a demanding game, while on yosemite it barely reaches 55-60 under heavy load. It`s beacuse of windows, and these are the temperatures, I got the same average 55-60 in windows and 45 celsius in yosemite. I read on the forums and I tried evend with a cooler pad. But it doesn`t seem to be any improvement with lowering the temperature in windows.

MacBook Pro Retina (mid 2014) failing Memtest ?
Hi !
I'm experiencing issues with my MB pro retina mid 2014 since I have it (1 month now) : kernel panic, reboots, freeze, and so on. As I have a little experience with computers, I thought it sound like a memory issue. So I ran memtest (from USB stick, and from the OS) after a complete reinstall (from the network).
Now, memtest from USB stick shows 10560 errors and freezes the computeur after 1h30. Memtest from the OS shows that :

I run the global Apple Hardware test that says there is probably an issue with a memory module.
Here's my trouble : I went to my nearest Apple Premium reseller, the tech guy says my Macbook has no issue, and is in perfect condition... he just made a test like in the terminal : yes something, to "stress" the memory. He says memtest isn't edited by Apple and its results are not relevant, and AHT is just a simple user diagnostic tool, but it's not relevant neither...
But I'm pretty sure AHT AND memtest can't be wrong ? What can I do ?I have the same problem with MBP 15 retina 2013 late... I think something goes wrong.... ((((

Mid 2014 Macbook Pro Hard Freezing due to GPU Hang...
Hello,
I have a Mid-2014 Macbook Pro (10.10.2) that I have been using for a few weeks now. I keep on getting random hard freezes on Google Chrome. Before, this used to happen about once a week, but now it seems to be happening much more often (like once to twice per day) - I haven't updated my software recently so this could possibly be an issue. When I had this exact same GPU hanging issue on my first Macbook Pro (bought 2 months ago), I had it exchanged for this one, but now I am encountering the same problem! I tried looking at Console.app and got a System report telling me that I had a "GPU reset"and also showed an "Intel GPU Hang Summary" with a "hang analysis". I know this is most probably relating to the GPU to some extent, but I'm not sure what exactly is the cause of this hanging. Any ideas? Also, any way to get around the hanging problem (I can just decide not to use Chrome anymore, but that would be a band-aid solution at best).
Thanks!Could this really be a hardware issue at this point?
The best way to determine that is to have it tested. -
Is it applicable to run windows 8 on macbook pro, 13" retina display, mid 2014?
I wanna bootcamb windows 8 on a macbook pro 13" retina display mid 2014.
is it possible, specially that my drive is 128 GB only? does windows properly working?Hi ..
It is, but be aware, Windows 8 requires approximately 16GB's of storage space and you would have to partitition the hard drive.
Strongly recommend reading the entire Boot Camp user guide before proceeding > Mac Basics: Using Windows on your Mac via Boot Camp
You will need to purchase a Windows install disc.
Alternatively, check out VMware as well as Parallels
