Mid2007 macbook trying to install retail copy of 10.6.3 after install fails say bless tool unable to set boot disk help!

Mid2007 macbook when trying to install retail 10.6.3 screen comes up installation failed because cant set start up disk try startup utility. when try startup utility it says bless tool cant set boot drive when called apple support guy said my harddrive was going out even though the computer had no ill signs before inserting install disk. I bought new harddrive and installer does same thing . Then apple sent me a new disk - same thing . I have ran disk utilities numerous times tried to reinstall numerous times even hooked external harddrive and ran tech tools from it one side note the startup key commands do not seem to work as in apple op pr,apple op of etc but will go to option start.  I realize it is getting old but something is keeping software from loading i also read where i could take ram out for awhile i did this. No change. Taking to apple store is not option any and all suggestions welcome

Sounds like the machine has a firmware password as you cannot change the startup disk (stored in NVRAM) and only the option key at boot works.
You will need to option boot from the 10.6 disk and use the Firmware Password Reset utility and enter the password to disable it.
If you forget the password, take the machine to a Apple Authorized Repair and they can bypass it in hardware.

trying to install Lion. says this disk is not enabled (journaled) - but when I look at the drive it actually is os extended journaled - Stuck! Have tried repair disk permissions and still no luck - any thoughts? Have spent two weeks trying to get apple support and itunes to help me get lion after a hard drive fail and now they are closed and I really just want to get moving!

Are you installing OS X Lion over an existing installation of Snow Leopard, or are you reinstalling?
First be sure you have everything on your system backed up. Then reboot with the Command-R keys held to get to the OS X Lion recovery volume. In here, select Disk Utility and use the First Aid tab in here to run a verification on your boot drive. If there are any errors, fix them and then try the installation again.
The next step would be to format the drive, so with your backup secured, use Disk Utility's Erase tab to re-format the drive to Mac OS X Extended (journaled), and then quit Disk Utilty and attempt the installation again.

Hello,
Try Firefox Safe Mode to see if the problem goes away. Safe Mode is a troubleshooting mode, which disables most add-ons.
(If you're not using it, switch to the Default theme.)
* On Windows you can open Firefox 4.0+ in Safe Mode by holding the Shift key when you open the Firefox desktop or Start menu shortcut.
* On Mac you can open Firefox 4.0+ in Safe Mode by holding the option key while starting Firefox.
* On Linux you can open Firefox 4.0+ in Safe Mode by quitting Firefox and then going to your Terminal and running: firefox -safe-mode (you may need to specify the Firefox installation path e.g. /usr/lib/firefox)
* Or open the Help menu and click on the Restart with Add-ons Disabled... menu item while Firefox is running.

Once you get the pop-up, just select "'Start in Safe Mode"

If the issue is not present in Firefox Safe Mode, your problem is probably caused by an extension, and you need to figure out which one. Please follow the Troubleshooting extensions and themes article for that.
To exit the Firefox Safe Mode, just close Firefox and wait a few seconds before opening Firefox for normal use again.
When you figure out what's causing your issues, please let us know. It might help other users who have the same problem.

• TS4036 I'm trying to restore my iPhone 5 iOS 6.0.2 but it says I'm unable to because my backups aren't compatible because they're iOS 6.1

I'm trying to restore my iPhone 5 iOS 6.0.2 but it says I'm unable to because my backups aren't compatible because they're iOS 6.1. Please help!

You can restore to a backup made on a device running a higher iOS version; it must be the same or lower.  Update your iPhone 5 in iTunes, set it up as a new iPhone, then go to Settings>General>Reset>Erase All Content and Settings to erase the phone.  Go through the setup screens again and when given the option, choose Restore from iCloud Backup.  After updating you'll be able to restore to your backup.

After months and months of new reports, it's pretty clear that this is an Apple Mountain Lion problem and one that Apple needs to address.  As one frsutrated user noted :
>>There is no consistent solution for a user.  Apple has to supply it.  All you can do is submit a bug report to

Please, if you are encountering this problem you will save yourself a lot of wasted time and energey simple by joining me and others in asking Apple to fix this problem: Make a bug report.

I keep trying to sign into iCloud on my system preferences but it keeps saying that its unable to sign in because of a problem communicationg with iCloud, and i've tried to create a new account but then it says i cant create one at this time.

Welcome to the Apple Community Abbey.
Try the following, it won't cause any problems if it it doesn't work...
Navigate to Macintosh HD > library > preferences > system configuration and drag the 'Networkinterfaces.plist' file to the trash and restart the mac. Now try again.

Each time my macbook restarts and tries to install the downloaded software updates, I get an error message telling me that there might have been an error during the download process of the updates and that he's unable to install the updates.  What can I do?

What are you trying to download? If you are referring to the recent security update, just ignore the error and select the option to open the installer. It's fine.

• Macbook Snow Leopard Install Fails

I have been trying to install Snow Leopard on my cousin's macbook for like 2 weeks. I boot up to the install DVD and run the installation. It goes through the entire process all the way to the end and then I get a message that the installation failed with a restart button under it. I have tried doing disk repair and permission repair with disk utility and then running the installation but it still fails. I am at my wits end, I don't know what else to do. I wanted to do this because my cousin's computer was having issues booting. I couldn't even boot the Leopard 10.5 CD that came with her computer. But when I did the snow leopard dvd it boots up perfectly, it just won't install. She needs a computer and I need to not have to share mine with her because hers is broken. I am the only one in the house with enough know how to fix the computers when the break, so that's why I am fixing her computer. I am about ready to throw her Macbook out the window because I am so frustrated. It is 2 years old and shipped with Mac OSX 10.5 Leopard installed on it. It is newer than mine, which I have had for 3 years. Mine is working perfectly still and it is one of the ones that shipped with Tiger installed. Then I upgraded to Leopard, and then to Snow Leopard. I haven't had a single problem with it. I don't understand why her 2 year old computer is having issues when my 3 year old one is not. Especially when they are both Macbook 13" White laptops and look identical when you don't get a close look at the keys. That is the only difference, her function keys are a bit different than mine, and have the buttons for controlling dvd's on them, like play, pause, and rewind. Mine are just like volume, brightness and stuff like that and just normal function keys. Mine is older, if any of them was going to break it should have been mine, but hers is the one with all the issues. I don't get it! This is her second laptop, her first was a Compaq PC laptop and it got a ton of viruses on it and crashed. I suggested that her parents get her a Macbook because they work better and get far fewer viruses (if any at all) than PC's do and for a wonder, they did. She is always the one with the computer problems. I guess it's because she's a teenager and doesn't always take very good care of her stuff. I just don't know. I do know that I have a huge problem with her laptop and need help!!

It doesn't. It just starts up to the Macintosh Hard drive and doesn't do anything differently because I am holding the D key during start up.
For the D key to work one of two criteria must be met:
1. The HD has a hidden partition on it with the Apple Hardware Test (AHT) on it. Some recent Mac models come from Apple with this HD configuration, most older ones do not. Any drive that has been reformatted will not have the hidden partition.
2. An original grey system disc with the specific version of AHT for that Mac model must be in the optical drive. The disc itself will be marked to indicate that it has the AHT on it.
Retail OS installer discs (Leopard, Snow Leopard, whatever) do not have any version of the AHT on them. The AHT is not an application, it is a tiny operating system. Each version is designed only for specific models; they are not interchangeable.

• Trying to install OS X 10.3 on a new hard disk.

I inserted a new hard drive into my iMac, as I knew that I needed more hard disk space for Panther then the 6 GB that I had with 9.2.2 (not for the install, which only requires 2 GB, but for general use).
I zeroed it and formatted it with Mac OS Extended (Journaled), but when I continued with installation it said, "You cannot install Mac OS X on this volume. You cannot start up your computer using this volume." when I tried to select a volume for installation.
Although I don't want to install until I have checked the firmware is updated (using the old hard drive and OS 9.2.2), I obviously don't want these problems when I try to install in a month or so.
Hard disk is Maxtor 6E040L0, 38.3 GB.
I have looked at Solution: mac os x cannot start up from this volume (http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?messageID=2265801&#2265801), but the info says that the drive does have Applepartitionscheme. I will try it with the opposing scheme, if possible, but I assume that won't work.

To install Panther, you need the retail install version CDs (black with silver X). I suspect you are trying to use a model specific version or upgrade version (gray), that won't work.
When you formatted the new drive, did you check to install the OS 9 drivers? The drivers need to be installed if you want to be able to boot OS 9.x. If you just want to be able to run in classic mode, the drivers are not necessary.
If OS X has never been installed on your Mac, you need to check if your Mac requires a firmware (Boot ROM version in System Profiler) update. Mac OS X: Available firmware updates
http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=86117 If an update is required, the update must be installed (using OS 9) BEFORE you install OS X.

• Trying to install Windows XP on Parallels...Error message! Help!

I have a macbook pro and I am trying to install Windows XP via Parallels on it. The installation seemed to be working until I got an error message that said "The file ASMS can't be found. Insert your HP cd into the drive." and then it said something about typing in the location address manually... Please help! I checked and the ASMS file IS on the cd but Parallels doesn't seem to be recognizing it...

I am also trying to install XP Pro, both with Boot Camp and Parallels, and meeting the missing asms file problem although I don't receive a missing HP card msg as I am using an original MS Win Pro installation disc. Instead I get a System Setup error log entry: ' I/O device error. Installation failed asms. D:\I386\asms. Component needed by Windows could not be installed.'
Apple Tech Help suggested I probably had a faulty disc but online searches show this problem has existed for some years and affected both Mac and PC users. The latter seem to be able to solve the problem by tinkering with the Registry - but what about us Mac types? Any help would be much appreciated.

• Hi. I have recently purchaed the new i4 s. on trying to install it says "cannot install please check with vendor that this is a genuine apple install?

hi trying to install itunes but dosnt let me
message says
This instalation package could not be opended. Verify that the package exsists and that you can acess it
or contact the vendor to verify that this is a valid windows installer package
Any help much appricated

Well, running on a 2006 model.  I did not have a startup disc.  Initially, it booted up on original software in 2006.  Since then, I've upgraded to 10.6 via a box set.  And, since then I think I popped it up to lion.
All I have on a disc is snow leopard.  And, I can't get farther than the setup screen due to hard drive.  I'm taking to a apple authorized repair store right now.  We'll see what they tell me .  I'm just going to weigh the cost of repair vs. buying new.
Another bad, stupid thing is I had no means of backing up my stuff.  So, I might have lost things like music, vids, etc.  we'll see if they can recover.  If the cost is too much for repair I might just forget it and start over with a new system.  Just not sure at this point.
