Middle mouse button opens multiple tabs

My middle mouse buttone will open from 1 to 4 tabs, all copies of the the same page on a single click.
It doesn't matter if i do a slow (10 sec) click or a fast click.
but on long clicks (if its going to malfunction) it will continue to open tabs as long as the mouse is held down. Other times it won't open the new tab until i let go.
I have this on all three of the computers i use computers (work and home) since 3.6
== This happened ==
Every time Firefox opened
== 3.6

I do not have the Ad Block Plus extension installed.
I'll try a different mouse for the day, though, and see how it goes. It may just be the mouse in my case.

  • Middle Mouse Button Opens Link In TWO Tabs

I, like many users, have only started having problems with Firefox since the onslaught of updates started. For the most part, they have either gone away with newer versions, or are minor annoyances.
MY PROBLEM: Whenever I use the middle mouse button to open a link, it now opens the link up in two separate tabs. This only started after upgrading to version 29, and didn't happen immediately (maybe a few days). I just updated to 29.0.1, which has done nothing in terms of fixing the issue.
It's not the mouse, as I can open Chrome, find a link, use the middle mouse button, and only get one tab.
Any help or advice would be greatly appreciated.

Please don't reply anymore. If you don't want to read the OP, then you shouldn't reply. Thanks.

  • Middle Mouse button to close tabs isn't working...??

in the earlier update my middle mouse buttons used to close as well as open tabs for me in firefox..
but after the update 32.0.2 this feature of mine seems to be not working....
Please be kind and reply to this problem sir..
    Thanking you in Anticipation...
    Sorry for the trouble...

    Hello,
Can you check your '''about:config''' page to see if "browser.tabs.opentabfor.middleclick" is set to true?
In order to change your Firefox Configuration please do the following steps :
    # In the [[Location bar autocomplete|Location bar]], type '''about:config''' and press '''Enter'''. The about:config "''This might void your warranty!''" warning page may appear.
    # Click '''I'll be careful, I promise!''' to continue to the about:config page.
As for closing a tab with middle click, you may need an add-on. I use the [https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/tab-mix-plus/ Tab Mix Plus extension] for that feature.

  • When closing a tab with the middle mouse button, an adjacent tab sometimes reloads.

I've noticed on both my home (Ubuntu 10.04 LTS) and work (Windows 7 Home Premium) computers, occasionally when middle-clicking to close a tab, the adjacent tab that comes to the front is immediately reloaded. Work computer has FF 13.0.1, I can verify what version I have at home later if needed but it's whatever the latest version supplied by Canonical is.

Firefox may not have loaded the tab in the background if you've never visited the tab during the session.
Start Firefox in <u>[[Safe Mode]]</u> to check if one of the extensions or if hardware acceleration is causing the problem (switch to the DEFAULT theme: Firefox/Tools > Add-ons > Appearance/Themes).
*Don't make any changes on the Safe mode start window.

  • I used to be able to open links in a new tab by clicking my middle mouse button, but now that I've updated it to the most recent update it doesn't work anymore. How do I fix this? I really love that feature. It works in IE and Chrome but not Mozilla.

Ok, I used to be able to open links up in a new Tab using my middle mouse button. However, I updated firefox with the automatic Updates on the 26th of October and now I no longer can open links with my middle mouse button. Why? I use this feature just about every time I go searching on the internet so I really would like it back. I couldn't find anything that it was related to in the options so I turn this over to you guys.

Do you have that problem when running in the Firefox SafeMode? <br />

  • Why is it that sometimes when I use my middle mouse button to click on a link to open it in a new tab I will have it open it in an entirely new instance of Firefox instead of a new tab?

Occasionally when I click on a link with my middle mouse button, instead of opening the page in a new tab, it will open a new instance of Firefox.
I've looked through some of the settings and I wasn't able to find anything. It really gets to be bothersome at times because I prefer things to be in tabs instead of a new browser.

It's not specific sites. I can middle-click on the same link 50 times and it will open it in a new tab 45 times and 5 of those times, it will randomly open it in an entirely new window. I don't know what's causing this.
It happens so randomly that I don't know how to pin-point what it could be.

I'm on Firefox 3.6.21, and I got this problem today after a Greasemonkey update (To version 0.9.10, apparently).
Disabling Greasemonkey solved the problem, and re-enabling it reproduced the problem (middle-clicking links to open in new tab did not work, merely highlighted the link).
I should also note that while Greasemonkey was enabled and the bug was affecting me, Ctrl+Click to open links in new tabs was also broken.
    I hope this helps!
EDIT: It appears this is a known incompatibility/conflict bug between current versions of Greasemonkey and Tab Mix Plus. Read more here:
    https://github.com/greasemonkey/greasemonkey/issues/1406
EDIT 2: GREASEMONKEY HAS NOW BEEN UPDATED with a workaround to fix the problem. Go to https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/greasemonkey/versions/ to install the update manually. It hasn't been reviewed by Mozilla yet, so it won't be an automatic update for another day or two. All credit to "cannonfodder" below for noticing this; please mark his post as helpful!

  • Middle mouse button does not open links in a new tab.

If your only solution is to tell me to:
    1.Restart my computer
    2.Start Firefox in safemode
3.Use another hotkey to open a new tab that's not middle mouse button.
Then don't even bother replying. As I've done the first two and it made no difference and 3rd option is a solution at all.
This is frustrating and I'm slightly upset that after reading 20+ Pages of the same problem dating back from 2011 that there are no answers.
I am on a fresh install Windows XP (Yes I know old school) with firefox version 27.0.1.

Cor-El I have done all of those as everyone else suggested on all of the other forums.
I plugged my mouse into another computer and it worked fine. So that lets me know its either something fishy with firefox or my computer.
As I was writing this I found out what my problem was. However I'm unsure of why. I'll explain here in case anyone else has a similar problem.
If I Middle click + Hold click for a solid second on the link it will open a new tab.
It just seems like there is a massive delay in my middle mouse click speed on this system.
Either way I'll investigate this further on my own. I appreciate all of your time.

  • Middle mouse button no longers open URL in new tab.

So, I'm on Firefox 6.0.2 and my middle mouse button no longer opens urls in new tabs.
It closes them, reopens old ones fine, just no longer opens links in new tabs.
    Any ideas?

The problem may be about a Greasemonley update :

  • Middle mouse button does not open tab with new url

Suddenly, Firefox (3.6.10 on Kubuntu) changed the behavior of the middle mouse button.
Before, pressing the middle mouse button on the regular window (not tab bar or tool bar or such) and not on a link caused Firefox to open a new tab and to attempt to load the content of the buffer as URL.
Now, Firefox shows a weird circle with arrows and my page scrolls vertically in a weird way.
How to get back the original behavior?
I tried to find a solution on the web. Despite the many suggestions, the problem prevailed. For example, browser.tabs.opentabfor.middleclick and middlemouse.contentLoadURL are both true

Very glad to see I am not alone. Alas....that answer did nothing on my system. I also am very very frustrated that, all of a sudden, my middle mouse button brings up a weird four pointed arrow! (see pic) I NEED it to open links in tabs for researching!!
I turned off auto scrolling in the advanced settings. Restarted FF even...and nada.
I have disabled every single add on I had (only like 6 of them)...and nothing.
This happened all the sudden...I dont even know of an update. FF v3.6.10

  • Whenever I click on a link with the middle-mouse button, it opens multiple copies the link instead of only one (Version is 4.0.1).

Whenever I click on a link with the middle-mouse button, it opens multiple copies the link instead of only one (Version is 4.0.1). I have checked the mouse in other browsers and it doesn't behave oddly in them.

Does that happen if you {Ctrl + Click} the same hyperlinks?

  • Middle mouse button does not function for Firefox Tab browsing when cetain programs are running.

My Microsoft Comfort Mouse 3000 middle button is set in Firefox to open and close tabs. (In Control Panel, Mouse, Firefox is the only program exception and the Wheel button is set to middle-click instead of the default Instant Viewer).
When vlc media player (http://www.videolan.org/vlc/) is running and at some point viewed in full screen, the middle mouse button reverts in Firefox to the default Instant Viewer. When vlc is closed, tab operation once again works.
The same thing happens if MWSnap screen capture (http://www.mirekw.com/winfreeware/mwsnap.html) is running.

  • Bookmark tab + Middle mouse button

I've searched around a bit and can't seem to find this anywhere:
On my Mac I can middle-mouse click anything on my bookmark tabs and it will open a new window, however when I switch to my PC and do this it doesn't recognize it and there is no configuration ( that I can see ) to change it to detect it. I know my middle-mouse button is working because I can use it to click hyperlinks and open them up as new background tabs...
This is about the only thing right now that is keeping me from switching from Firefox on my PC. Any help on this is greatly appriciated!

IMHO the must-be feature is simply not yet implemented. But of cause you can file a feature request to https://bugreport.apple.com to ensure that Safari team wouldn't forget about it
