Midi cables, dead?

I'm having a problem with midi communicating with Logic. From the very first time i plugged my midi cables into my US-122 Tascam interface, it automatically was hooked into logic and it was plug and play.
After a happy year of this, there is no midi communication going on. I've checked my ins and outs, reset my midi in logic, reset my US-122 and still nothing.
Could this just be one of my midi cables going bad or my super cheap midi keyboard that i bought at walmart years ago? Just wanna get some opinions before I go buy anything new if there's something i'm missing. thanks for any info!
happy holidays!

I've had MIDI cables go bad, even good ones. But...
Go to your environment's Clicks & Ports layer. Is there a connection between the physical input (sum) and the "to recording and thru" icon (and any intermediate objects that might be between those two objects)? In other words, is the cabling between the physical input, other objects, and the "to recording" icon intact?

  • Using MIDI cable with M-Audio FastTrack  Pro

I have 2 keyboards. One has USB MIDI, so I just plug it directly in to my computer and Logic sees it. I also have a nicer keyboard (weighted keys), but this one doesn't have a USB out. It has a 1/4" jack and a 5 pin MIDI jack. I've tried plugging it into my FastTrack Pro using a MIDI cable, but it doesn't seem to work. What am I missing?
    Thanks

    Hi !
Still no answer from M-Audio but it seems that they are not in cause.
I read on several topics of Apple's Forums some similar problems with other audio devices and also with some USBhubs.
I ran some little tests and for my case, using the other USB port of the MacBook seems to resolve the problem (but that's not a permanent solution for my point of view).
Using a selft-powered USBhub works also, even on the port that makes it crash without hub.
As I studied a little bit of electronics, it looks really like a problem of power supply through USB to me. It could be some kind of micro-cuts (or micro-undervoltage) that are sufficient to cut the audio stream and freeze a bit the system but not enough for MacOSX to switch significantly to the internal audio.
But two questions still remain :
Why one USB port of the MacBook and not the other one ?
    Why since 10.5.2 ?
Steve, if you hear me ;o)
'Hope they will react quickly !

  • Connecting Yamaha keyboard with MIDI cable?

So, I have a Yahama YPT-320 portable keyboard and would love to start recording some music through GarageBand. I know you need a MIDI cable, and I was wondering if this one works with iMac at GarageBand? The seller says that it works with Mac and PC, but one of the reviews says that it doesn't work with Mac? Any ideas would be appreciated!!! :) Thanks.

Interesting timing...  I just received the MIDI/USB adapter you mentioned and am having problems with it.  (Mine was $5.85 including shipping on eBay.)  Do you get the same results as me?
Details: MacBook Pro 13"; OS X Lion; Garage Band '11 v6.0.4; circa-2002 Yamaha DGX-500 Portable Grand keyboard; adapter USB to Mac; adapter MIDI "OUT" connector to keyboard MIDI "OUT" connector.  Adapter red LED is on continuously.  Adapter yellow LED flutters dimly continuously (questionable...) and flashes bright whenever any keyboard key is pressed.  But as I hit all white keys from low to high, only about every 10th key is recognized by Garage Band.
I am not a MIDI expert and was starting to look into this.  My keyboard supports "GM System Level 1" and I was just reading the details of what that means.  But if you confirm it behaves like this for you, I will just go with a different adapter.

  • Voyetra USB MIDI Cable...Can I use it with the Mac

I bought a USB Midi cable with a software package for my PC.
    http://www.voyetra.com/site/products/skits/usbmsk.asp
I've recently switched to the Mac. Are these cables pretty standard, or do I need to get a new cable? I haven't hooked it up yet. The Voyetra site doesn't seem to have any Mac drivers.
    Thanks

Answered my own question with a little more digging. Hope this helps anyone else.

  • Connecting A Keyboard With a MIDI Cable

I have connected my keyboard to my laptop with a MIDI cable, and the sustain pedal makes a noise throught the computer whenever I push it down. What to do?

I don't know much about sequencers. But maybe a concept from the "raw audio" world would help. Riven's comment in this thread is what is most pertinent:
    http://www.java-gaming.org/topics/reliable-sound-playing/26104/view.html
How are MIDI sounds launched? Are you doing them singly? Or can they be placed in the context of a running sequence, running timeline? If the latter can be done, then you have a better chance of accuracy.
There's also a link, in that thread, to a good article about timing issues for audio, in my first post there.
It might be helpful to enqueue the MIDI events as they arrive, with a timestamp, and use the timestamps when calculating when to feed them to the Sequencer. But as I said, I could be way off, as I haven't worked with MIDI in Java yet, and don't know if that even fits the model of how things are done.
But it's not like you've gotten a lot of help here from anyone else, yet...
    You might try StackOverflow forums.

  • MIDI cable not working for my bass?

I've used it countless times, but today it's not working. I have a midi cable (that game with the Rocksmith video game) and I have used it over and over again with no problems.  However, today it is not working. GarageBand isn't recognizing it, but the computer itself is! It's just not playing any feedback. HELP!

Nvm. Something is wrong with the actual bass.

  • MIDI Cable from Elec Drums to interface not reading audio

I'm plugging a Roland HD-1 Electronic Drum set into my M-Audio FastTrack Pro Interface to record on garageband 09. The drums have a single Midi port labeled Midi Out. The interface has 2 Midi ports labeled Midi In & Out. I am using a midi cable that has a left and right/in out plug. One is red the is gray.
I cannot seem to get an audio reading. Is it because I'm using the split cord or is there a setting I must change

    no
what should the audio preferences be set to?
for input, it doesn't matter, you have no audio device connected:

  • MIDI cable connection problems

I just recently bought a MIDI cable and I plugged the out end into my keyboard and the usb into my iMac, and the computer recognizes the keyboard and MIDI connection but whenever i play sound won't come out my Garageband but it will on my keyboard, i would like to record on garageband using my keyboard, any ways i can fix this?

    PeterVanNguyen94 wrote:
My keyboard doesn't have a vocal volume knob.
I meant Local volume knob, not Vocal volume knob! By that I just mean the volume knob, which I'm pretty sure it does. Basically, just turn the volume down so you only hear the computer.
I just looked at the manual. It goes further and suggests turning off local control (see pages 29 - 31)
    http://support.casio.com/pdf/008/lk_45_01_e.pdf
Then, make sure to plug the MIDI cable into the out jack on the back of the keyboard and the USB jack on the computer. (sounds like you are already doing that).
Then, you said "the computer recognizes the keyboard and MIDI connection." What do you mean by that? If you select, say, a piano sound in GB, and play your Casio, do you see the meter light up at all on the left of the piano track? That would mean that at least you knew GB was seeing you play the keyboard, and you could target your troubleshooting at getting the sound out of the computer.

  • LabView and USB MIDI cable

Can LabView interact with a MIDI-capable piece of HW through a cheap 5 dollar USB MIDI cable?

LabVIEW is able to communicate though midi, although  it's a very very hacky process!   I'm assuming your cable has drivers and  creates a midi interface
There's two ways to do it, this works if you are on windows and it's probably the cleanest way.
    http://zone.ni.com/devzone/cda/epd/p/id/718
which may be enough for some people...  The second, more full featured way of getting MIDI out of labview is through OSC...  get this
    https://decibel.ni.com/content/groups/osc
And use it to generate OSC messages, then  grab a complementary piece of software to do the OSC- MIDI translation, unfortunately the OSC to midi conversion department is pretty sad right now,  there's a lot of  hacky programs, like OSCulator, touchOSC bridge, this thing (http://konkreetlabs.com/2011/05/24/free-win-mac-osc-to-midi-converter/) that all can be persuaded into working, but it's not very pretty. perhaps the best alternative to  get MIDI to OSC is though a  synthesis software suite such as pureData, MAX/MSP, Max for Live... but I assume you don't want to learn a new programming  language (and don't want to spend hundreds of dollars in music software)
As a matter of fact, because labVIEW's native MIDI support is less than stellar,(or inexistent! )   I'm working on third way, basically  creating a whole API to communicate to the OS provided midi interfaces, but you need to do some DLL/framework  (winMM, CoreMidi, ALSA) in addition to the labVIEW API  to get it working... It's actually not that sophisticated,  but  there's way to much work to be done before it's usable ( so far  you can  get a listing of MIDI devices and  information about them but no messaging just yet..)

  • Mac Mini (Mid 2011) dead / EFI, ... how to unbrick?

    Hello!
I have a Mac Mini Server (Mid 2011) which does not boot up anymore.
A benq screen is connected via HDMI and a mac keyboard via USB.
    What I did before:
    * generate lion recovery stick
    * boot up with it an created a raid1 on the two internal 750gb drives
    * reinstalled OSX (which took way to long, I want a full USB installer and not a network based one!)
    * booted up OSX (worked nicely)
    * installed the 5 pending software upgrades (one was the EFI Update)
    * the efi update itself looked ok (grey progress bar was 100%) but instead of starting up my screen went blue
(=sign for lost hdmi signal) and the mac mini fan went to full speed.
    * there was no interruption, power outage, reboot or whatever during the EFI BIOS update.
After that I called the Apple support, which only mentioned that I have to bring it in.
After waiting >30 min on the first support call they said I shall turn it off and on.
I tried the 10sec power button press method, pram-zapping, target mode towards an
other mac via thunderbolt, recovery mode, ... nothing changed the behavior.
The only thing it does on powering it on is to show a steady led, you feel the virbrations
from the spinning disks and after 25sec the fan turns full speed again.
For me it smells like an EFI issue, I wonder if the update routine got confused by the RAID1
(like trying to store some temporaty file which failed)
If I press the power button while plugging in the power and press power again the led does not
lite and the fan turns on imidiatly, these are the two modes in which I seem to be able to power it up.
I saw for older macs exists an "Firmware Restoration CD" http://support.apple.com/kb/HT2213
But I did not find anything else.
After calling Apple support again and spepding 2h in the phone queue and two disconnects
I got to a "Senior Advisor" who did not even knew about the "Firmware Restoration CD" at all, ...
He said there is no Recovery for this model and that most likely the logic board has to be replaced.
What I would like to hear from all of you out there:
    * is there any way to recover a EFI firmware on the most recent Mac models, like my Mid 2011 Mac Mini Server?
(if not this sounds a bit broken by design)
    * Any other suggestions what I could do to bring the Mac Mini back to life?
    Thx, mek!

I have the same problem with the Mac mini in mid-2011, the newestmodel. After the EFI firmware update 1.3, the Mac will not start well, and fan speed up to full speed Increasing but the mac does nothing.
I called Apple and they don`t give me another solution to get him tofix. From what I've seen the most likely have to change the logicboard.
My is a brand new Mac Mini 2,3 GHz i5 with 2 GH mem
If anyone has another solution please comment on it.
My mac mini only has 20 days
    Sorry for my poor English
