MIDI files-Turning individual tracks on/off

How would one turn off individual MIDI tracks? Quicktime Pro is a handy, quick app. Is there an editing screen for the individual tracks? Quicktime seems to be General MIDI oriented and is still useful in certain cases. -Stefan

What I'm really looking for is a quick, simple way to edit MIDI files that use the General MIDI soundset and conventions. Quicktime plays them back with a fairly good sound overall but with no editing flexibility. I can use Garageband for the quick and dirty, but often things aren't as simple as in Quicktime because of anomalies like the bass tracks playing back an octave too low, or an odd playback synth patch choice made by Garageband (and then I have to monkey around with the file). I use Logic and Digital Performer almost daily, but I want something quicker and simpler. I find it hard to believe there isn't a mode to import to Garageband or Logic that maintains the General MIDI conventions. Usually, all that's needed is to turn off a track or two and reduce reverb to make the track nominally acceptable. (Obviously, this seems like the perfect job for something like Quicktime Pro. Oh well...)

Disable MIDI Thru on individual tracks

Hello,
Maybe someone from Apple can answer this one... in the Logic Express reference, it says the following:
It is possible to disable MIDI Thru for any MIDI track in the Arrange window selectively, by simply disabling the R button to the left of the track name. (ch 20, pg 473)
Is it just me, or can anybody else find this "R" button on a MIDI track?

Thanks Freddie, I had a feeling it might be. Is there any way you know of to disable MIDI Thru on multiple ports/instruments using the "Song Preferences - MIDI" dialog in LE7? I have been able to disable one instrument using this option, but I would like to be able to disable all MIDI thru functions in Logic.

P.S. I also think it's stupid that they mention the arm button in the LE7 manual if it isn't an option in Express. Lazy manual writers!

Smart Filters: turn individual lines on/off. Line by line AND/OR

Two more Smart Collection desires.
1. A on/off box for each line
2. Boolean function picker for each line. AND/OR/NOT

Agreed that AND/OR//NOT implementations can be tricky. But it can be done well, or hidden under an advanced button.
It just seems silly that I have to cobble together a smart collection and filter to get what I want. For example if I want to view everything with either of two attributes, but not a third, I can't do that in a smart collection alone.

Standard Midi File Import/Export Questions

I'm having some trouble with Standard MIDI files, in that, after exporting them, and importing them back into another Logic project to test them, some of them will split/demix. That is, instead of one MIDI region appearing, it imports as two MIDI regions, with the notes of the part split between the two regions (the notes seem to split according to velocity, not note value).
Here is my question related to this:
Is it possible to export a Standard MIDI File for each "part" in a project, rather than one SMF for all the MIDI files in a project? (i.e., create one SMF for each software instrument track)? This is what I'm trying to do. The reason is that I'm trying to prepare and save some MIDI files to include with the audio files in a remix pack, and, since it's likely that the various remixers will be using different DAWs such as Cubase, I'm assuming that a SMF that includes all the various parts might not import into their program correctly. Is my assumption wrong? I.E., will most DAWs, like Cubase, etc., correctly import a SMF that includes all parts, and upon import split those parts correctly?
I'm following all the instructions for "Saving Standard MIDI Files" from the Logic Pro manual, except that I am not merging all the different instruments' MIDI regions together; I'm only merging each individual parts' MIDI regions.

Well I think the problem is solved. There was a conflict between Logic and iLife 06. I bought a new computer this week and had to load everything into it. I decided not to put in iLife 06 yet including Garageband and all the jam packs. I loaded all the new .caf files off the Logic DVD
I opened a midi file and all tracks loaded with Logic instruments. the problem was that a lot of the instruments had been erased somehow or over written by Logic studio. Now I believe they are all there and things are working as they should

Standard Midi File trouble

I was reading the new features of 8 and one that caught my eye was that when you open a a Standard Midi File (smf) it now works like garageband and assigns software instruments to the midi file instead of assigning external midi channels. anyway, Here is what it says in the manual page 633:
Note: As a default behavior, Logic Pro will automatically create software instrument
tracks for each MIDI track, and assign an appropriate GarageBand instrument to each,
when you open a MIDI file. If you want to use external MIDI tracks for each MIDI track,
press Option while opening the MIDI file.
So I thought I would give this a try and see how it works. first thing I did was open Logic and started with a new blank project and assigned one audio track to it I used the open file command to open the smf, because if you import it only imports the midi info and not the global info. Logic asked if I wanted to close the current project and I did. The it asked if I wanted to copy the current environment or make a new one, and I chose a new one. The file is a smf type 1 and has 7 instruments all with general midi patch change commands assigned . I also tried this with smf type 0 and got the same results
1st result: Logic created 17 channels in the arrange, 12 instruments and 5 external midi. 4 of the tracks with midi data on them, were assigned to software instruments which corresponded correctly to the programs assigned. 3 of the tracks with midi data were assigned to an external midi device. I did this a few times always with the same results
Next I thought I would try opening a template that I have made with 8 audio, 8 instrument and 16 external midi tracks and using the environment setting in it when I opened the file. I kept the template open also and used the environment setting from it. when the midi file opened, I got a warning that I was out of memory, I clicked OK then it open and arrange window Identical to my template but with no regions in the tracks. I hit play anyway and the song started playing even though there were no regions and there was no spl. it was plying my external synth all channels worked fine. I thought I would check some of the editors and the notes are there in the Piano roll and event windows. It seams my main arrange window is locked though because I cannot select another track in it but if I open the mixer I can.
OK now what happens when you press option when you try to open a midi file?
Well that worked as expected and gave me all external midi devices, but it also gave me 17 midi tracks 7 that were for my smf and 10 that were empty
Anyway I was wondering if anyone one else can try this and let me know what happens

CAN'T IMPORT MIDI FILES INTO GARAGEBAND

Installed iLife '08 in order to use the new GarageBand. However, when I open up a new track and drop a MIDI file onto the window both the MIDI file and the track disappear. Any remedies?

Same here. Now that I think of it, I recently put in Logic Studio 8 and Garageband didn't open on it's own anymore. That was iLife'06. I then up-graded to iLife '08 and Garageband still doesn't open to a new project. The only way I can still open Garageband is to make a "template" out of one of their demos, then when that opens I strip the tracks out and start with new ones. By the way, I just tried to install XLN Audio's Addictive Drums. They work in Logic Studio, but do not open at all in Garageband. Error message says the plug-in is not "valid". So much for Garageband being easier than Logic.

Bend MIDI pitch while playback MIDI files

is it possible to bend the midi music pitch while playing back a midi file with multiple tracks?

Why N900 doesn't play mid-files! Nokia, please, make this phone play mid-files! I really need this player! Nokia 6233 plays mid-files, why you have taken off this from new phone??????

www.dvdvideosoft.com have some free audio converters and video converters which are useful for the n900.
on the topic of free converteres, if you want something that can simply convert videos to high quality mp4s that matches the n900's screen resolution, download the free video to ipod converter from dvdvideosoft. then copy the txt file ive attached to this post into the program's profiles folder and change the extension from '.txt' to '.xml'. then just run the program, choose iphone as the device, and you'll see all the profiles ive created for the n900.
the program is good for quick conversions and accepts a fair few file formats. but some things it doesnt do are;
image stretch - the program maintains the source video's aspect ratio
hardcode subs - if the source is an mkv, sub files will not be hardcoded
the files using my profile are rather large because i prefer quality over portability. we do have 32+gigs of storage after all!

Automatic track assignments importing type 1 MIDI file

Hello - I am trying to understand how Logic decides to assign tracks when importing a standard MIDI file. According to the manual:
"As a default behavior, Logic Pro will automatically create software instrument tracks for each MIDI track, and assign an appropriate GarageBand instrument to each, when you open a MIDI file".
The files I want to import consist of a few tracks, with track names describing their role, such as "bass", "pad", "lead", "drums", etc. Each track contains ONLY note-on/note-off events, and all of the notes on each track are assigned to a particular channel. (No program-changes, tempo, or any other kind of controller events, SYSEX, or meta data).
When I import the file, most tracks are automatically assigned to a software instrument, which is fine because I can then set the track to a particular channel strip performance by sending the appropriate program number to each track.
THE PROBLEM: it usually happens that one of the imported MIDI tracks will get assigned to 'No Output', instead of to some software instrument. The tracks with names "bass", "lead", "pad", and "drums" (on channels 1, 2, 4, and 5 respectively) always seem to get consistently assigned to a software instrument. But the channel 3 tracks (I've tried naming them "piano", "keys", "synth", etc) usually, though not always, get assigned to "No Output".
The reason this is a problem is that I am trying to remotely control Logic (via Applescript) from a web application, where Logic is used to automatically render MIDI data into audio. So I can't manually reassign that track, and unfortunately there seems to be no way to reassign a track via key commands, or I could accomplish that via Applescript as well.
Does anyone have any idea what criteria Logic uses when automatically assigning tracks to "suitable" software instruments, so that I can avoid having tracks end up assigned to "No Output"? Hope this question makes sense, and thanks for any guidance.

midi file 0 is one track per midi channel, midi file 1 is separate tracks. for example, if a drum track on one midi channel has each note separated to its own track midi file 0 merges them and midi file 1 keeps them separated

Don't drag the midi into an open Logic project. The tracks won't set up correctly.
'Open' the midi file with Logic as if it were a Logic project. Then all the tracks will be set up so you can start editing them and applying better saved sounds and instruments, but you'll be at a starting place where you can hear what's going on.

I am no longer able to turn off cellular data usage for individual apps. When I turn most of them off, they just automatically reset themselves to allow data usage. Any thoughts?

I am definately having the same problem and cannot believe there are no answers or even support that this problem exists. I never have to post on forumns, I read what is usually readilly availiable for the craziest of problems.
Anyways, the problem is just that, I can toggle off a individual app's setting of cellular data availability, but it changes right back on rescreening. After restarting, resetting etc, it seems that the big Apple Apps are the biggest offenders. Music is a very important one, Podcasts can kill you very quickly, app store, Photos, Facetime, Stocks?!?!?!
When one searches for solutions I have to see hundreds of links to "How great is ios7, you can turn off cellular data for individual apps FOR DUMMIES!". I am a dedicated apple fool since the Apple IIe (long time), but when they run afowl it is usually really bad. Why offer an on/off switch if the setting is always on?
I am writing just to add support to the existence of this problem, not so much for people to offer ideas of solutions as I now believe it is in the coding.

Bouncing individual tracks creates 2 wav files for each..why?!!

When I bounce individually selected tracks from Logic Express, it creates a double wav file in my folder for each track I bounce. It didn't use to do that and I haven't changed any settings... Please HELP :/

By "double wav" do you mean that you are getting a separate audio file for left channel and another for right channel, something like this?
Be sure to check in your bounce window that you have "interleaved" checked instead of "split."
Depending on how you're exporting/bouncing your tracks this may not help, but you can always solo the desired track and bounce your song with "interleaved" selected to get a single stereo file of that individual track.

Macbook air (11", mid 2011) turns off randomly

My macbook air 11" (mid 2011) turns off randomly. Sometimes, in the middle of something a black screen. After a few seconds it starts up again, on using a key. It restarts in the application I worked on before. Strange!

Do you have put hard drive to sleep when possible checked? Try unchecking it.Have you tried repairing permissions in utilities? You could also do a pram reset. Command/Option/P/R keys at startup for three chimes.

Sorry for the trouble. What is the exact detection from Norton for the installation file? Did you download itunes from the legitimate Apple web site? What is the error you are referring to?

Best way to read tracks of a MIDI file

What is the best way to read events (sequentially based on time) of the tracks in a midi file ? Should they be read serially (track 0 all the way through then track 1, etc) or parallel based on some measure of time (of all tracks)?
