MIDI In button (Step entry) in Piano Roll editor

I'm observing a behavior in the Piano Roll editor that does not seem to be documented in the user manual. If I double-click on it fast enough, it turns red with the MIDI plug graphic filled in black. In this state, it will not accept MIDI input from my keyboard controller. Anyone know what is going on with this
TIA.

Ah! Got it. Instead of quickly doubleclicking the MIDI-out symbol (that's what it is) you can also option-click.

  • Why was the link button removed from the piano roll?

Why was the LINK (chain) button removed from the piano roll? This makes Logic X useless to me as I can no longer compose or perform new lines based on previous midi performances. PLEASE BRING IT BACK!

I miss that button too and just filled out the LX Feedback form (Menubar -> Logix Pro X-> Feedback) with the following text. Maybe if you guys did the same, we had a chance revive this essetial feature!!!
    thanks!

    Hi there,
it seems as if the Link Button (Yellow chain symbol) has been removed from the piano roll for no reason. In Score View it is still there.
I (and probably more users) absolutely NEED that Button to decouple the content of the piano roll from the selected track/region AND to use multiple piano roll windows with independent content.
    - For transscripting (Mute/Solo Audio regions while editing a Midi-Region)
    - For arranging. Edit 2 different midi regions both in separate Piano Roll windows
    - For recording. "Reading" Drum-Patterns while recording the Bass e.g.
Please bring that button back or explain why it was removed
    Best regards,

  • Separate midi drum channels not showing in piano roll, only kick

hey ya'll!  I separated my midi drum notes on to separate mudi tracks. But now only the kick track shows up in the piano roll window.
I am using AD and need to be able to edit the drum midi tracks. I use the piano roll window for this. Can someone help me?
    Jon

You can select multiple regions in the arrange window and they will all show up in the piano roll. If you color each drum region a different color and select "region colors" in the piano roll view menu you can easily tell which regions are whoch.

  • 8.0.1 has broken Content Link in Piano Roll Editor

Logic 8.0.1 has managed to break Content Link in Piano Roll Editor... Select a MIDI region in Arrange, choose a Screenset for Piano Roll and, with Link active, you'll see the contents for the selected MIDI region. From that point on though, you'll only ever see the contents of that first selection, no matter what other MIDI region is selected. Logic can be forced to reveal the contents of another MIDI region by double-clicking or Option-double-clicking but it's hardly ideal; not when your workflow for the past ten years has been screenset based.
That bug alone is enough for me to go straight back to 8.0
    Nice one Apple.

Sorry Captain - you're quite right. When changing screensets, the link is lost.
In Logic 7 the default behaviour is what you want - screensets follow the selected region. This does appear to be broken in 8.0.1
Perhaps some people would prefer this - so that you could have screensets that have Show Contents link mode on for different regions, for example. The best solution would be to have a Preference where one could choose the option one prefers.

  • Auto-zoom in Piano Roll Editor?

Is there a way to auto-zoom the piano roll editor so it encompasses all the notes in the region?
    Thanks

1 - Press Escape - it should give you a list of the tools.
    2 - Press - 9 ...this corresponds to the Zoom tool/Magnifying Glass
3 - Click draw a zoom area with the Tool on all you want to see
4 - Click anywhere outside to return to original zoom
    This takes micro seconds once you are familiar with the Key Commands.. and you could call it;
Auto- Zoom in the Piano Roll Editor

  • Logic Pro X.  Right-click not working in the piano-roll editor.  And colour issues.

I usually use the right mouse-button to open the toolbox under the cursor but this doesn't appear to work within the piano-roll edit window in Pro X.  Is this the same for everyone?  The right-click works in all other windows.  Seems pretty odd.
Also is it just me who finds the near-black background very oppressive?  I worked in front of Pro X for several hours yesterday and was left wishing I could change the background colour of the main and edit windows.  Is there any way to do this?
I also really need to be able to access custom colours for the colour palette as the new palette doen't sit at all well with me.  Any ideas anyone?  The manual states that if you double-click on a colour it should open the colour editor but it doesn't.....

It turns out that if you assign the right button to 'Open Tools and Shortcut Menu', it works in the piano roll.  It's obviously a bug which should get ironed out.
The other thing that's driving me nuts though is that when I change tools in the main window, the pointer still appears like an arrow, even though its function has changed.  When I pass it over a region, it usually changes to to the correct icon - but not always!  Aarghhh I'm going back to Pro 9 for now......

  • My main page has disapeared I can only see the piano roll editor

In one of my songs in Logic Pro X only the piano roll is visible - I cant see the main page or access any other editors

    Great - thank you!

  • LP8 - Are there q-strength options in the piano roll editor?

    Hey Everybody-
Can you quantize single notes using the q-strength, etc., functions that are available in the inspector? I like to quantize individual notes in the piano editor and would love to have that option.
I looked in the manual and ran a search on this forum and didn't see anything. Any help would be appreciated!
    Thanks,
    Tom

Yes. Press Opt + R for the floating Region Inspector. There you have the same things as in the Inspector in the Arrange.

  • Editing with step entry

This is probably a newbie question, since I just learned what the IN button on score or piano roll editor does.
First, can I INput notes destructively - to replace instead of adding to what's on a particular bar/beat? Can I toggle between replacement and additive modes?
Second, it would be nice to be able to position the playhead precisely to a given bar and beat. Doing it by sight (in the Score Editor, at least) is confusing.
Also, does anyone know a product where there is tight integration with a Sibelius-like score editor and a Logic-like MIDI editor?

    Good stuff, good stuff!
When it comes to working in the score editor, however, it's very often the case that the playhead is nowhere to be found in the section of the score being shown. In that case, using OPT+click on the score to get the playhead into view can be your first step. Afterwards, the rewind/forward by division value might work nicely for you if your area of concentration are the notes of a particular bar.
The division value may not always be set to where you need it to be, though. If you're editing 32nds and your div. value is 16ths, it requires mousing to that field in the transport and adjusting it. I find this really inconvenient, as I want my cursor to say in the vicinity of the staves. So there are two other key commands that are really helpful:
    • set next higher division
    • set next lower division
If you find you're going to use these commands a lot in the course of your editing then I'd suggest assigning key commands around a concentrated area of the keyboard where you can operate them solely with the left hand, keeping your RH free to operate the mouse. For example:
    lower/higher division: CMD 2 and CMD 3
rewind/forward by division: CMD R and CMD T
There are no mneumonics involved in those key assignments; it simply suits my hand shape to let me keep my LH in one place with easy access to those related functions. Now, there's a chance that all of those commands are pre-assigned in Logic (I'd have no idea because I ditched the preset commands decades ago). But if for some reason you're attached to the preset key commands, you can always create a specific set just for specific kinds of editing.
    Happy editing!

  • Color Code Midi Notes on Piano Roll?

Can you color code midi notes in Logic Pro's piano roll/key editor? (I.e., can you make all C's red, C#'s blue, etc.?)
I'm tempted to jump from Cubase to Logic, but I need this feature.

    Why do you ask?
I've learned to 'read' my color coding in Cubase -- just like I read ordinary notation (red, yellow, green = C Major, for example). This way I don't need to open a score editor or Sibelius when I work.
Anyway, can't be done in Logic as far as I can see; too bad.

    Hi
    Confirmed.
I'm not sure that this has ever worked in the Piano Roll.

  • How to enable note names in piano roll in Logic Pro X?

    Hello,
I am trying to understand how to enable the note names in the piano roll editor, according to some posts it should works creating a mapped instrument, I follow up each step but for me this solution does not work.
Basically I have created a software instrument with Drum Kit and I would like to see the names of each component of the drum when I am editing(for example snare, kick, toms HH etc), currently I only can see values as C4, C3, C2 etc
I appreciate your help, thanks in advanced.

Well it is a shame because the "Piano Roll" is a good and quickly tool for edit drums and midi software. I have used Cubase, ProTools, Reaper and they have notes names options available, I do not understand why Apple did not think in that option as well.
By the way today I have practiced with "Step Editor" option, it is interesting option but it is not better than edit with "Piano Roll".
I hope that Apple think in this little option but great tool for the next release.
    Thanks Ericksimon.
PD: If anyone have another idea to edit drums quickly with Logic Pro X I appreciate the recommendation.

  • How to edit multiple regions in one Piano Roll window

I edit multiple regions in one Piano Roll window at the same time. (It is very handy way of editing especially in huge orchestra projects.)
I can see midi contents of all selected regions in Piano Roll at the same time.
    1) But how to choose certain one region of many selected to edit it?
    2) And how to edit all at once?
Hope the questions are clear enough.
    Thanks.

First of all, the Piano Roll has two mechansim, of what it is displaying.
Selected Track: This displays all the Regions that you select in the Tracks Window
One Track: Selecting one Region in the Track Area displays all the Regions of tha tTrack in the Piano Roll. If you select multiple Regions in the Tracks Window, then the last selected Regions counts.
Whatever Regions are now displayed in the Piano Roll Editor can be edited. Select the MIDI Events and apply the command.
You can also apply edits directly to the selected Regions in the Tracks Window.
I explain all those little details in my graphically enhanced manuals ("Logic Pro X - How it Works")
One thing to be clear about:
Tracks Window: Any edit is applied to the selected Regions
Piano Roll Editor: Ay edit is applied to the selected Events
    Hope that helps

  • Enter triplet values in piano roll... and volume question

How can I get the piano roll grid view to temporarily change to subdivisions of 3 per per beat (instead of 4) in a 4/4 piece so I can align triplets?
Also, how do I change the volume of a single note in the piano roll editor?
    TIA

    1. In the transport bar, where you see the time signature (default 4/4), just below that is the beat subdivision. You can click on it and drag up or down to change the value. A value of 12 will subdivide a beat into thirds.
    2. You can't really change the volume of a note, per se, since volume is a MIDI parameter that doesn't apply to single notes, but rather as continuous data. You can, however, change the velocity of notes, which will affect the volume of the note if the note's velocity is programmed for volume change. To do this, choose the Velocity tool (escape, then 9) and click the note and drag up or down.

  • Problems with Dedicated Piano Roll Screenset in 8.01 update

    Anyone else having this issue?
If you have a dedicated piano roll screenset, does it show you the currently selected MIDI region from the arrange page?
Since updating to 8.01, this has stopped functioning for me. If I click the chain link icon off, and then back on, it snaps to show the selected MIDI region, whereas it used to follow automatically, like normal. So in other words, I used to select a MID region from the arrange page, hit my screenset number, and I would be looking at the MIDI data for that region. It no longer is doing that.
It shows the SAME midi region, regardless of which one is selected on the arrange page.
If I open the Piano Roll Editor from the tab at the bottom of the Arrange page (or open it hitting the key command "P"), it shows whatever MIDI region is selected, as expected.
It's just the dedicated screenset of the Piano Roll Editor that is not showing/updating the selected content/region.
    Anyone else experiencing this?

It's interesting that one of my tests of whether I think Logic is moving in a positive direction, is after using a new major version for a few months, I go back to the old version, to see what my general impression is.
After using 7, and running 6, I was shocked at quite how horribly ugly LP6 was.
After running 8, I go back to 7 (I've tried this a few times) and every time I see my LP7 autoload it just feels so much better.
I don't like the lightened look, the ugly parameter boxes, and the horrible list windows (event list etc).
I'm going with it to stay current, and I'm hopping Apple are going to deliver on the Logic promise sometime during LP8. I hope they do, but if they don't, then I will probably stick with what I have, and start to change my opinion about my "Logic forever" position since, well, Logic 1.x, and slowly start thinking about falling from my Logic tree.
Apple have done amazing things with FCP, and it took time, so I am really trying to give them the benefit of the doubt. Logic is so brilliant in many ways.
