MIDI not working in GarageBand

I am about ready to rip my hair out on this one. I have surfed through a ton of forums and can't get a straight answer. I bought an MIDI to USB interface to play my keyboard in GarageBand. It is a E-MU X midi 1x1 Tab connector and a Casio CTK-558 keyboard. I plugged the cables in correctly and checked my GB settings to see that one MIDI connector is working. I created a new SOFTWARE track and I still can't get any sound. I went to utilities and MIDI audio set-up and my keyboard shows up. When I hit the test connection and press the keys it occasionaly makes a click sound. I am assuming that means its working. IDK what the arrows under it mean. It is a plug and play device so there aren't any drivers for it. I just don't know how people in the YouTube videos make it work so easy. I could really use some help here.

FrostArc I had similar frustration. It was saying it detected the midi input but nothing came through. Searched everywhere nothing helped.
Do all the basic things like midi in to out and vice versa. Now this sounds simple and what not but I noticed, after a long time, when I played my keyboard there were tiny indicators it was working. Only 1 green line in the volume feedback on garageband. Something really unnoticable. So I put down the volume on my keyboard and put up the volume to all max levels on my speakers and the volume bars in garageband and finally the sound came through. I really needed to crank all the levels up to hear it. It's still rather quiet but it works.
I have a Casio CTK-900 and a Carilion M1X1 usb cable. I hope this helps let me know if it doesn't!
P.S In my frustration I downloaded the newest version of garageband. Don't know if that changed it.

  • Korg Nanopad not working in Garageband since upgrading to Lion

I've just upgraded to Lion and the new update to Garageband but have found that my Korg Nanopad's not working anymore. I've got a Nanokey and that's fine but not the Nanopad. I've Downloaded and installed all new drivers etc... but still no luck and strangely now I can only get Mac to recognise one midi input at one time where I used to get the ability to run two at once in Snow Leopard. I get the light on the unit and when I tap the XY pad, I see a little dot appear in Garagebands LED area but none of the pads are making sounds like they used to. Not sure if it's a note mapping issue but have hit the frustrated level now.
I'm hoping someone can shed some light as it used to be pluginplay goodness.
    Many thanks.

Have you tried using the editor? to set the notes on the Nano? Maybe something in your set up got wiped in the updates?

  • USB MIDI not working in Windows 7 Pro 64-bit

The problem is that even though my devices are recognized in Control Panel/ Sound and in Device Manager, no MIDI data actually flows and I cannot sync my keyboard to the Yamaha software that edits it.  The error message in the Yamaha software reads
“The following MIDI ports can not be opened at this time”.   At first, MIDI was working and I could sync up, but after about a week, right around the time I uninstalled and re-installed a MS Lifecam, it failed and has not worked since.
I have been working directly with Yamaha tech support on the issue for some time. I have a Yamaha SX70 XS keyboard, which is recognized by Windows as a connected USB device. It is self-powered, not powered by USB. I am using the Yamaha USB-MIDI driver version
3.1.2 for Windows 7 64-bit (the latest driver). And the latest versions of all their editing software for Win7 64-bit. They assure me that those work for other users of Win7 64-bit. In my case though, everything shows up in Windows, but MIDI doesn’t actually
work. And I cannot sync to the keyboard due to the above error message.
Yamaha tells me that their USB-MIDI driver is installing fine on my machine, except that it’s missing a windows driver at the bottom of the driver stack. (You can see this in Device Manager, Properties/Driver tab, then Driver Details. The missing driver
is ksthunk.sys, which I think handles kernel streaming. Sounds like that would relate to MIDI data. They have never heard of this driver not showing up there, and they cannot reproduce the problem. ksthunk.sys is on my machine in c:\windows\system32\drivers\
and in the registry the image path is \SystemRoot\system32\drivers\ksthunk.sys
All devices are “working properly” in Windows Device Manager, despite that missing driver. Yamaha MIDI Driver is shown in Control Panel/Sound, and it can be worked with there (opened, closed, configured, etc.).  I have also tried three different USB
cables (but those shouldn't be an issue since the keyboard is showing up in Windows).
I was also advised by Yamaha to edit registry key  HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Drivers32  and remove all midi, midi1, midi2, etc entries, then uninstall and reinstall all drivers. Which I did, but it didn't help.
So far, no amount of re-installation, event viewing, uninstalling devices, numerous reboots, etc has fixed it. On this machine, that driver just doesn’t hook up to the Yamaha MIDI driver and show up in the stack.
So it looks like it may be a Windows 7 config problem on my machine, and I'm hoping someone here can give me some advice on how to fix it. The Microsoft forums contain a fair number of users reporting similar problems, some are audio and some are webcam
related. I've followed those threads, and done several of the suggestions, but haven't found a solution to this one.
This is a Dell XPS 8300 Windows 7 64-bit PC with all the latest updates, only about six weeks old. I've been struggling with the MIDI problem for most of that time.  I'm an IT professional (network and systems admin), so you can be fairly technical
    in your response.
Any suggestions will be welcome. Thanks in advance.

I am so glad I found keyman7's description, since I have exactly the same problem.
The problem is not related to MIDI output! I have it with a pure USB-MIDI-input device (keyboard), whichs produces "unknown externeal error" every time I try to select it as input. The same thing occurs with a USB-MIDI-Cable.
I compared the driver details from my system (Dell T1500 windows 7 pro 64 bit) with those of another windows 7 pro 64 bit. On that other system the device works like a charm (so it is not the hardware, either).
On the other system I find ksthunk.sys in addition to the modules that are listed on my system as well (beeing \windows\system32\drivers\drmk.sys, ..\prtcls.sys, ..\USBAUDIO.sys and \windows\system32\SysFx.dll, ..\WMALFXGFXDSP.dll).
Can it be some other USB driver is interfering with this driver stack? I have no idea how to figure out which one it could be. Or, it has been suggested in other threads with somewhat similar looking symptoms, ksthunk.sys has been removed as  UpperFilters
    entry?
    Help - please!

  • Sandbox Security Issue (MIDI Not Working In Applet)

    Hi all,
I'm having problems getting javax.sound.midi to work in a java applet. It works fine when I run the applet from within JGrasp, but when I try to run the applet from an HTML file there is no sound. From what info I've found, it seems like my problem has to do with the sandbox security so the applet is not being able to access the computer's sound card, but I still haven't found a solution or a work around to that problem (after about 2 weeks worth of searching). The world of applet security is all new territory for me.
I am running the html file off of my hard drive and I have my test program's class file in the same directory. I have tried both firefox and internet explorer web browsers (and also did the "allow blocked content" in internet explorer).
I have no other sound sources playing or paused that would interfere with the web browser playing (it works in JGrasp and immediately after closing JGrasp completely it doesn't work in the web browser).
Any help help in getting this figured out would be greatly appreciated. An example of an open source MIDI Java applet that I can pick apart to figure out what I need to make this work would be fantastic. Thanks in advance!

Hi ejp, thanks for the reply.
I did some searching for applet signing and I found this:
    http://www.brendonwilson.com/projects/signed-java/
"+Developers should be warned that signing alone is not enough to enable their Java applets to access resources normally restricted by the Java sandbox. Although signing provides proof of the integrity of the applet and validation of the author’s identity through trust-heirarchies, developers must also make use of the browser-dependent APIs to request permission from the user to perform restricted activities.+"
So am I going to have to do ask permission from each browser in order to get access to the sound card for the MIDI to play or will the MIDI work without that?
Also, I found this tutorial on signing applets. Does this look like a good one?
    http://www-personal.umich.edu/~lsiden/tutorials/signed-applet/signed-applet.html
    Thanks again,

  • Midi not working at all.

Hi I have a RME hammerfall multiface soundcard plugged into a G5 dual 2.3
I load up different AU instruments in logic 7.1 and no sound. I look at the transport panel and no midi notes are registering.
I thought maybe it was logic, but then I loaded up different native instrument standalones which used to work and they also do not work.
I get audio to work fine... just midi suddenly has stopped working
Any idea how to fix it?, any preferences that I need to trash etc... i'm totally lost as to what to do....
    thanks heaps.
    Prahlad.

If oyur MIDI interface shows activity when you send data check your audio Midi setup. Check if your interface has a thru or bypass mode. Verify it gets as far as Audio MIDI setup or not.

  • Command "T" not working in GarageBand

    Hello,
I am using GarageBand 10.0.2 and I use to be able to split a track (or regions as Apple calls it) using the Command+T buttons, ever since I upgraded to the new version of GarageBand from the old one (6.0.5 version) I have not been able to use this short cut. Now every time I want to split a track I have to go to Edit>Split Regions at Playhead, which as I'm sure you can guess is very monotonous when your are editing a multitrack recording. All of my other short cuts (i.e. Command+Z, ect.) are working fine it is just this one. I know it is possible to do this as this appears next to the option in the menu "⌘T"
    Please Help!!!
    Jason 

Yes, the ⌘T shortcut should work. It does for me.
Have you tried, if it only happens in one particular project or does it happen for all projects?

  • MIDI not working! Help!

on a powerbook G4 titanium, running OSX 10.3.9, i am using a BCR2000 controller sending MIDI data into Max/Msp.. it works fine for a short burst, then no midi data is receieved in Max.
i can (sometimes) very temorarily resolve the issue by 'rescaning midi' in Audio MIDI setup or powering of/on the BCR. then midi data stops getting recieved again after a short time.
the same thing effectivly happens if i 'test setup' in 'Audio MIDI setup'.
i have uninstalled alesis firewire audio drivers that i thought might conflict, i have deleted midi prefs + configuration settings etc, i have repaired disk permissions... i cannot get a driver for the BCR because there isnt one.. the firmware is up to date.. i have disabled automatic 'software updates' (which apparently corrupts Audio MIDI setup stuff)..
    but no still no joy.
if anyone can help i will be very very happy. this is driving me mad.
    thanks.

I have a new iPad 4 with a new iRig from Sweetwater...everything is current. Amplitube works fine on the pad and the phone, but can't get a guitar signal on either with Garageband. Yes, the monitor is on.

  • Macbook pro 2010 (mid) not working

    Hey everyone,
My macbook pro 2010 mid does not turn on anymore because I spilled a drink all over the keyboard and I do not want to pay to repair it. In addition, it also had display problems as well like white and black screens. I tried using the "Power On" program for apple and it says that my laptop is not worth anything but I am able to recycle it for free... I was wondering if my macbook pro is still worth something since I have the battery and memory in it still

Looks like that the speaker may be blown.
Have you checked the Audio MIDI setup?
Applications > Utilities > Audio MIDI Setup
        Audio Devices window
        Side Bar
        Click the Built-in Output.
Under Mute any of the boxes checked? If so, uncheck it.

  • MIDI cable not working for my bass?

I've used it countless times, but today it's not working. I have a midi cable (that game with the Rocksmith video game) and I have used it over and over again with no problems.  However, today it is not working. GarageBand isn't recognizing it, but the computer itself is! It's just not playing any feedback. HELP!

Nvm. Something is wrong with the actual bass.

I have foud the solution - rather stupid. The system setting for audio input was at 70%, increasing it to 100% solves the problem!

  • Has anyone used reMIDI as a plug-in for GarageBand. I downloaded a trial version of reMIDI, which enables MIDI instruments to be strummed or arpegiated, but can't get it to work in Garageband.  How do I set it up?

Has anyone used reMIDI as a plug-in for Garageband ('08)? The program allows MIDI instruments to be strummed or arpegiated. I have a trial version, but can't get it to work in Garageband. Wonder how to set it up.
    Thanks, Doctor Mark

Port Forwarding.....or Port Mapping....as Apple calls it is a difficult and complex configuration method for most users. Because there are so many variables involved in this type of setup, it is not possible to provide a step by step guide that will work for everyone with all devices.
It is possible that a setup guide exists for the the WD drive and AirPort Extreme, but you will have to go looking for it on the Internet. Even if you find one, it may not be tailored to your specific situation or needs.
Sometimes, you can do everything right....at least according to someone's article or "how to" guide, and things still will not work correctly.
In situations like this, when you really don't know what to do, you need to enlist the aid of an IT pro, who will know what to do based on your particular products and unique circumstances. Sometimes....they won't be able to get things working either due to particular circumstances.
But, before you do this, I would strongly recommend that you use a Static IP address for your Internet connection with your ISP. If you do not have this now, contact them to ask them if they offer this type of connection. Expect to pay more for this type of service, of course.

  • Line-in input not working correctly in Garageband

    Problem:
Line-in input not working correctly with Garageband. Problem occurred AFTER installing and using Blue Yeti USB mic, purchased from the Apple store.
    System Details:
    '07 20" iMac 2.4GHz 4GB RAM, OSX 10.6.5, Garageband '11 v6.0, Logitech Z4 speakers.
    Background:
Before using the Yeti USB mic, I used the line-in jack. I'd connect a Shure mic or guitars directly in, but more recently through a 12 channel mixer. Have connected the Shure mic directly into the input jack, and the computer appears to be picking it up (System Preferences->Sound->Input), it is responding correctly there. Have set the output to the headphone (line-out) jack. When I go into Garageband, I can select from Line-in 1, Line-in 2, and Line-in Stereo. The trouble is that it's the iMac's built-in mic that is active (the one above the screen), not the line-in. I've rebooted the computer, checked the connections, reconnected the Yeti mic and I can't find what's causing the problem. Not sure what to do from here, need some help. Thanks

I have Logic Express on the iMac as well and I worked out how to set the input device back to the Line-In. I went back to Garageband and found the equivalent setting under Preferences->Audio/MIDI. Thanks for reading, sorry I didn't sort it out sooner! Merry Christmas!

  • My Garageband does not work with Symphonic Orechestra or USB Boombox

I have two Macs: the main one is an iMac with Intel Core Duo 2 GHz, 1.5 GB RAm and 250 Gb HD, with OSX 10.4.8, and all the latest software upgrades as I download them as soon as they are available. The secondary Mac is a normal iBook G4-800 with 640 Mb RAM and not always the most recent plugins, but since a few days also the latest ones.
I premit I do use GarageBand to produce professional level music and in time I bought several new music features. I am a Mac user since ever and I never (I say again NEVER) uploaded any software (or loop) who wasn't regularly licenced and usually bought from Applestore itself.
    NOW THE PROBLEM:
Since I sold my old iMac G5 and implemented my CoreDuo I experienced a problem with Garageband: the external plugins for Garageband (such as the old and excellent "East West Quantum Lightning Symphonic Orchestra" but also the very recent USB "Classic Boombox" and "Ethnic Boombox" are not working. Those software instruments does appear correctly in the menus, but does not work. When I try to select them it appear this sentence (in italian, I will try to translate it approximateively):
"the plugin is not available. To add this loop using the same sound you heard in the browser loop, press the Option key and drag contemporary the loop in a new track"
This it happens all the times I try to set an instrument from EastWest or USB plugins from my iMac. As to make a confrontation, I installed the same softwares on my iBook and they work perfectly (with the only exception that I can't work from the iBook since is far too slow for me to use it with some profit).
Someone an help me or explain if there is anything I can do to fix my problem?
East West said the pluging should work (and to be honest it works correctly on the G4 as it did work properly with the G5). I own the USB software just since a few days, so I didn't ask them yet, but since is not just them, I guess is something else and do not know what may be the cause.
Some of you do have some hint or idea?

    Yep, I understand...
This is the final news I needed to get to complete my answer... I confronted myself the italian store and the US one and in the US one I didn't find this product...
As for the NI software, was so good that I just bought back my good "old" iMac G5 and will exchange it with this my Intel Mac. The G5 2 Ghz was good, performing as this new Intel (at times I even got the impression was more performing, but I believe is just an impression) and surely didn't have so many 3rd parties problems.
Meanwhile I filled every forum of NI and USB with my questions about the compatibility... and maybe I will be back to an Intel Mac when all would be OK, I'm not in a hurry!
By the way I had a listen to your work: GREAT!
You may hear a sketch version of something we did work on with the NI piano and choir sounds, while the alto sax is played live and the other instruments are from Apple or real keys (yes, we mix a lot of things):
    http://www.garageband.com/song?
while here is a track where we did use both the Orchestral sounds of Garageband (and some of it's loops, mixed with some good old programming) together with some NI sound:
    http://www.garageband.com/song?
We do not often use orchestra if not as here and there (other than in some work as this last one, but is not so frequent). Hope you may like our little works!

  • How can I connect my MBA 11" 2012  to my Imac 21.5" mid 2010 as a display unit. Connected using a mini display port cable and this did not work. Any guidance welcome. Thanks. John

I bought a belkin mini display unit cable( new) and connected the thunderbolt port in the MBA ( 11" , mid 2012) to the Imac mini display unit port using this cable. Pressed the CMD & F2 keys on the Imac keyboard as required but this did not work. Should I try with another cable ? Should i try with a thunderbolt cable ( recommended by appple support ) -- but they too were not sure about this. Is the Mid 2010 21.5" Imac not able to function as an display unit? Any guidance would help and will be much appreciated.

    Welcome to Apple Support Communities
Only the 27-inch iMac and Mid 2011 and newer iMacs can be used as an external screen, so you can't use your Mac as an external screen. See > http://support.apple.com/kb/PH11302
You can still use your iMac as an external display, using an application like ScreenRecycler
