MIDI over network/MIDI over FireWire

Hi,
I'm running a MacBook with Leopard on it and I'm trying to send MIDI data between it and some older Macs. I've had no problem using the MIDI networking feature in OS X 10.4 on my PowerMac and getting it to connect to my laptop, but I'm also trying to get my old iBook, running OS X 10.3, to send MIDI data back and forth.
I would like it if there were an easy networking solution, but I would also settle for connecting the iBook to the PowerMac via FireWire if this is possible.
What can I do?

I also would like to know this?
I have just heard that Leopard has its own built-in "Midi over Network"??
I have a Mac Pro (Leopard) a G5 (Tiger) and a New Macbook Pro (Leopard) and want to know the best way of connecting these via MIDI to each other?
Can this be done via Firewire? or LAN?
And does my Tiger Machine (Tiger for some older AU's) have this feature built in or download it??
Any steps how to set these up would be great..

• Midi over Network

Is it possible to use the Midi over Network that's build into tiger with Logic Express? I've seen some users setups with Logic Pro but I can't get it to work with express.

sorry..I forgot to update my signature. I do have Tiger.
What I'm having a hard time with is getting midi into Logic. In the tutorial, the enviornment shows the individul "sessions" from the Midi Network but I don't get anything different then when I use my MidiMan usb device. I can't figure out how to get logic to connect...or maybe its not even working between the two machines...How can I test to make sure that the connection is working? the Midi Network Setup window shows both my machines and it allows me to "connect" but I never get any midi as far as I can tell.

• My iPad2 does not appear in Network MIDI set up .... HELP!!

I have bought an ipad 2 to control Logic Pro with AC-7 core but I cannot get Network MIDI Setup to recognise my iPad 2.
I tried downloading rtp MIDI and trying to get Windows 7 to recognise my iPad 2 but still no luck.
I have tried creating an Adhoc network direct between my iPad 2 and my iMac .... no go!
I have downloaded Tildesoft Bonjour Browser to see if my iPad appears under Bonjour services and it doesn't?
I tried restoring my iPad 2 software .... still no help.
I checked my Netgear router and that shows my ipad 2 appearing as a device with the correct IP address but that as far as I can get,
I just cannot understand why my iPad 2 remains invisible to all my computers and network permutations.
I thought Bonjour was meant to be zero configuration technology!
Any help would be much appreciated

OK found a solution.
1. I logged out of my iMac and logged back in and did the same with my Windows laptops.
2. I unplugged my Virgin cable router from the back of my Netgear wireless router as I had read that your ISP can interfere with setting up Network MIDI.
I'm not sure which one did it, if it was doing both these things but my iPad 2 now appears perfectly on my MIDI network and I can control Logic Pro 8 with AC-7 Core.
Once I had my iPad 2 working over my MIDI network I was able to plug my Virgin cable modem back into my Netgear router without it effecting my wireless MIDI network.

• Wrong device name during network midi

Hi,
When trying to connect 2 network midi apps (eg, Nlog, & Midi Designer Pro) over wifi between 2 iPads, the name of the iPads are wrong, ie they're not the same as in Settings. I've tried changing them in Settings, General, About, & even tried changing them on my computer with iTunes - but still the names don't get updated & are wrong..
Thanks for reading, & all the best <3

Same here. Network Magic thinks my AppleTV is a Windows server.

• Running a java program over network

Hi,
How a java program on a machine can be run without having JRE on the same machine, rather interpreting bytecode over network having JRE on another machine?

Rahul.Kumar wrote:
well, so my java program is running on x. Initialy X had JRE and on invoking java program from command prompt, it had looked for JRE at path, set in environmental settings. Now I moved JRE to another machine Y and connected these two machines (X and Y). You have two machines X and Y.
"Connected" or not has nothing to do with this discussion.
In X path is set to the JRE on Y. The path on X has absolutely nothing to do with anything on Y.
Now execute java program on X, theoretically it should work or what is wrong with this? This makes no sense. Presuming you meant Y in the above then the following must be true.
1. You must have a JRE on Y.
2. You must have a java application on Y (or one accessible via the file system on Y.)
3. You must be on Y and start the JRE passing the java application that is on Y to it.
Notice in the above there is no mention of X. There can be no mention of X.

• Help! Saving an image to stream and recreating it on client over network

Hi,
I have an application that uses JDK 1.1.8. I am trying to capture the UI screens of this application over network to a client (another Java app running on a PC). The client uses JDK 1.3.0. As AWT image is not serializable, I got code that converts UI screens to int[] and persist to client socket as objectoutputstream.writeObject and read the data on client side using ObjectInputStream.readObject() api. Then I am converting the int[] to an Image. Then saving the image as JPEG file using JPEG encoder codec of JDK 1.3.0.
I found the image in black and white even though the UI screens are in color. I have the code below. I am sure JPEG encoder part is not doing that. I am missing something when recreating an image. Could be colormodel or the way I create an image on the client side. I am testing this code on a Win XP box with both server and client running on the same machine. In real scenario, the UI runs on an embedded system with pSOS with pretty limited flash space. I am giving below my code.
I appreciate any help or pointers.
Thanks

While testing more, I found that the client side is generating color UI screens if I use JDK 1.3 JVM for running the server (i.e the side that generates the img) without changing single line of code. But if I use JDK 1.1.8 JVM for the server, the client side is generating black and white versions (aka gray toned) of UI screens. So I added code to save int array that I got from PixelGrabber to a text file with 8 ints for each line in hex format. Generated these files on server side with JVM 1.1.8 and JVM 1.3. What I found is that the 1.1.8 pixel grabber is setting R,G,B components to same value where as 1.3 version is setting them to different values thus resulting in colored UI screens. I don't know why.

• Accessing shared files over network

I am having some problems with a couple of database files that I access with a Java program over network. Different computers running this program all need access to these files, and my question is if anyone know of a good way to make sure that only one user have access to these files at the time. There is no server software running were the files are stored, they are simply reached through file sharing. Currently I am creating a lock file indicating that someone is editing the files, however if I am unlucky 2 users create that lockfile at the same time and then both get access to the file corrupting it. Anyone experienced this and know of a nice solution to avoid it?

• Randomly losing network connection over wireless

Shortly after installing the 10.4.5 software update, my G4 iBook with built-in Airport Extreme card has been losing connection with increasing frequency. Built-in Ethernet use is unaffected. I'm calling this problem thrash-and-drop.
1. When it's losing signal, processor activity goes through the roof. I had Activity Monitor running during a thrash-and-drop. kernel_task CPU consumption goes from under 1% before the event, to over 80% during the thrashing, and back under 1% after the thrashing stops. The activity is so bad the cursor can't be controlled: using the track pad sends the pointer all over the screen or nowhere at all.
2. This has been observed to occur with two different wireless base stations: A Linksys WRT54G and an older SMC 802.11b router. Either router is within 10 feet of the computer. Only one is running at a time. There are no other base stations in range.
3. Another iBook G4 (OS 10.3, Airport Extreme card (not built-in)), sitting next to it, shows no change and its wireless behavior is unaffected.
Initially, this seemed more likely to happen when Safari was loading Flash-heavy pages. And after thrashing and dropping a connection, it was able to reconnect after either a reboot or a five minute sleep. Currently, it can't connect to a base station for more than a minute. Most recently, it thrashed and dropped while I was selecting the base station to use. This is true regardless of the application running. In fact, it will thrash-and-drop when there are no user applications running at all, after a fresh reboot.
I've tried the following things to address the problem. None have affected the thrash-and-drop problem. Admittedly, most of this is random:
1. Back up and delete network preferences in /Library/Preferences/SystemConfiguration
2. Turn off IPv6 in System Preferences/Network
3. Back up and delete network preferences in ~/Library/Preferences (com.apple.NetInfoManager.plist and com.apple.NetworkUtility.plist)
Has anybody else seen this problem? I want to blame it on the 10.4.5 upgrade but I haven't seen anybody else complaining about 10.4.5 doing this to them. If there's something I can do to fix this in a software setting, I'd much prefer that to yet another roadtrip to the Apple store.
1.33 GHz G4 iBook Mac OS X (10.4.5)

Hi!
I have the same problem of randomly losing network connection over wireless, though mine is hardly related to surfing.
I have an external storage drive in which I use for backup of my stuff, and I access the drive via my modem, using the airport. Of late, I noticed that when copying files from my iBook to the external drive, the connection would suddenly drop before the transfer is completed. This began to occur with increasing frequency, particularly when transferring large files.
I have since abandoned wireless connection, and reverted to my trusty cable. Still, I admit that I'm really curious about the cause of the apparent lack of reliability with my wireless connection. Has it something to do with the airport?

• HELP! - Error 1309 - Can't copy file over 10gig to External firewire drive.

I know this is more of a hardware issue but I know that only other final cut users would be copying single files over 10gigs.
I have a G5 that I use for video production. Video Files can be large and to back them up I got an external hard drive ( Maxtor 1-touch 200gig) When I try to copy a file on to it that is 10gigs it give me a 1309 error. I have found that other people have had trouble copying files over 2gigs over to an external firewire drive. But I haven't found any answers. Can anyone offer any advice on how to solve this?
Thanks

If you don't want to format it for the mac, you are limited to file sizes under 2gb.
Another alternative is to hook a firewire drive to your Mac and then share it with your windows machines (the program SHAREPOINTS is useful for this).
The drive can then be formatted Mac OS Extended and, once shared, the PCs can access all files without size limitations.
good luck.

• Share Aperture photos over network

Hallo every body,
iam searching for a solution, how to share photo over network for a long time, in our company we have 40 macs(imac, mac bookpro) and 3 xserve, vtrak and 30pc. and we have round about 30000 pic they are saved in iphoto library on one of the xserve.
My Boss wants from me to find a solution to share these photos over network. the mac users must use iphoto to access these photos.
which program shall i install on the server so that the client users can access the photos from there macs through iphoto.
at the beginning i used the share library option in iphoto, until iphoto 9.1.1. By iphoto 9.1.1 on the client when i click on the shared library my searching field disappears and i cant search in the shared photos.
I thought Aperture is the solution, so i shared the aperture library over the network (with afp protocoll) but in order to access the network aperture library, first i need to install aperture on the client and then i open iphoto and from iphoto option i can choose the option access aperture library.
how can i solve it without to install aperture on the client, is there any iphoto plugin so that i can access aperture library without installing aperture
or is there somebody uses another solution???
please help
best regards
Tony

Neither iPhoto nor Aperture is the solution for this.
The idea of using iphoto on the client machines is wrong, it's just not designed for that use. Iphoto is designed for a family with a point and shoot camera, or even a phone. Aperture is a pro level photomanager. Installing Aperture on all the mchines means you will have to purchase the app for all the machine, you need a site licence.
Also, it won't work anyway. You can't share an Aperture Library like an iPhoto one an only one user can access the Library at a time. So, one of the users acesses the Library and all the others are locked out.
Neither are what you need: you need a media server application. A pro level media server. Tell your boss he's fooling himself if he thinks anything else will work reliably.

• File loss over network on Mac Pro /windows

Hi I hope someone can help, I have been using my network for over a year with no problems also networked the same for the last 4 years.
I now have files and folders go missing when dragging between computers I have one mac pro and x2 windows computers vista & 7.
The network is set up so I have the windows set up for emails and downloading files - I then transfer to the mac, I work on them and drag them over to the windows vista which runs the rip for my large format printer.
I have a shared folder on each pc which all the computers can read/write.
When i drag files and more often folders from the windows 7 to the mac they will not show on the mac but are sitting in the shared folder. when i drag from the mac to the windows vista I sometimes can't see anything in the shared folder (other times a few things) but I can't add folders or drag files over without them going missing. there is no logic or pattern to what i get so if this make any sense i really could do with the help!
thanks ali

The new user helped a little but not enough to make the customer happy. I have done a bunch of research over the weekend and I have found there is a little known bug in Apple's ACLs. ACL stands for Access Control List and I have a snippet from a MacFixit that describes the issue:
"A disappointing aspect of Repair Permissions in Leopard is that it does not deal with ACLs (Access Control Lists), a secondary layer of permissions control laid on top of standard Unix permissions, tentatively introduced in Tiger and actually used for the first time in Leopard. Repair Permissions will announce that it is surprised to discover that a certain folder has an unexpected ACL setting, but it won't do anything about it (in other words, it won't repair that kind of permissions)."
Anyway it appears to me that if your privileges get hosed in a computer upgrade the only way to really fix the problem is copy all of your data to a second HD and then break out the install DVDs that came with the Mac Pro and do a fresh install and set the user/file-sharing up manually and then copy your data back to the Mac Pro. I did not connect back to the G4 to get the data again, I just copied my many years of correspondence back to the Mac Pro and this time everything works?
The new user idea did let me manually drop files onto the Mac Pro from connected computers it WOULD NOT let me save files to the Mac Pro from network computers. I usually got a bad path message when I would try and save from Word or TextEdit. I figured I had wasted enough time on this problem and erasing everything and starting over was a better idea.
Thanks everybody.

• Install Solaris10 over network.

I have one sinfire v245 box which is in remote location (DR site). I want to install Solari10-u5 on it.
I can't travel to remote site due to some restriction.
Presently Solaris10-U1 is installed in the box.
I have telnet/SSH access to Solaris-OS, and i have SSH access to it's "Advanced Lights Out Manager".
There is no one in remote location who can insert Solaris10-u5 media.
In this situation, is there anyway that i can freshly install Solaris10-u5 on it ?

Ok. I learned the way how to install Solaris over network.
I have created a install server on another solaris box, the client and this box are in the same network.
I am trying to install the client, i am getting this error on the client continuously . Any idea how to solve this ?

• Expdp over network fails.

I have a test1 and test2 db's on two different servers. I want to run expdp from test2 db and get the export of a table from test1. I have created a db link and used network_link in expdp command. Granted read, write on directory to user with which i am connecting to db.
Using expdp over a network_link fails with this error. For the same user I have tried it locally on test2 db and it works fine.
Is there any other step to be done ?
ORA-39002: invalid operation
ORA-39070: Unable to open the log file.
ORA-39087: directory name DUMPS is invalid

expdp un/pwd*@test1db* job_name=EXP_test1 directory=dumps network_link=test1.dummy.COM dumpfile=dp.dmp log
file=dp.LOG tables=a.tableThis is the problem. When running export using NETWORK_LINK to test1, you need to connect to test2 not test1.
The idea is your connect to test2 first , test2 then connect to test1 using database link and bring the data over network and dump to local directory.
In your command it's actually running export against test1, then in that case, test1 need to have directory called dumps defined.

• Impdp over network: sometimes slow

Hello,
I've just made an experience, that impdp over network is sometimes slow and sometimes fast:
My configuration:
I have a "source" database (lets say A), with version 11.2.0.1, and two "destination" databases B (11.2.0.1) and C (11.2.0.3).
The data size is about 100 GB. Import from A into B needes about 4.5 hours, and import from A into C takes about 1.5 hours.
The data which is moved are identical. I've also checked the wait states, and we have found out, that database B makes a lot of log switches
during import, which is the reason, why database B is such slow. On database C there are almost no log switches.
B has log switches frequency about one in 2 seconds. C has aprox. 6 log switches in the first 30 minutes (during DATA load).
That database B has logswitches, and C not let me think about Direct Load versus External Table Load, which is described in the documentation.
But this seems different when using network_link: the trace of the DW process does not support this information (but should, as described in 552424.1).
I think, there are some bugs/features fixed/changed between 11.2.0.1 and 11.2.0.3 regarding load strategy over network_link.
There might be also a chance, that a initial parameter is different between B and C causing to different behavior, but
Does anyone have a similar observation? Does anyone know about this "change"?
Additionals:
The users have all the same grants, the data are exact equal (by FLASHBACK_TIME), remap_schema and remap_tablespace are used at both.
Ulrich

Hello,
Database A is in archive mode, B and C not.
The problem is in the data transfer, not at index generation.
For C, the data transfer is 30 min, Index generation is about 1h.
For B, the data transfer is about 200 min, Index generation in about 1h.
I have one new information: We have switched back after this to dumpfile transfer, and interesting: With dumpfile, the import is done with Direct Path.
