Midi playback, Audio Input tracks, record limit

I just bought logic express and Im having a few problems.
1. I like to do live recording and Im using an Alesis multimix 16 firewire mixer. I checked into Logic express's specs and it says it can handle 12 input tracks, but if I try to arm more than 9 of my firewire input tracks They disarm themselves. 9 is a lot but i bought it expecting to have 12 and thats important to me. any way I can get the other ones to work?
2. whenever I play my midi keyboard and record, or whenever I add loops to the software instrument tracks I get no sound on playback. ive updated my software and I cant figure out what else to do.
3. I havent tried to record a concert yet, but how long can I record without it stoping, and is there anyway I can extend that without purchasing a FW hardrive, I have a USB one but i dont know that that would help.
thanks in advance

I can't get input audio to playback in Vista either, and it works fine in XP on the same machine. I have a X-Fi Elite pro and ALL of my inputs show as "currently unavailable" in the Vista recording devices dialog.
I'm sure Vista made it a pita for sound card companies but come on, it's been months now since release and so far the Vista drivers for X-Fi are mediocre at best and are lacking a lot of the features found on XP.
Not to mention the boxes show "Vista ready" or whatever.
Anyway a solution to this problem would be appreciated!

  • Any way to boost audio input when recording?

Hi; I have been recording speech interviews with Audio-Technica mics on a ProTools set-up and they've sounded great.
I've recently tried recording using the mics in Garageband using a M-Audio Mobile Pre USB, but the audio levels are always too low unless the subject is an inch or two from the mic, which isn't the best way to get quality audio.
Is there any way to boost the audio input when recording in GB or any other tricks people know of?
    thx, Charlie

I'm actually having the same problem, except I'm recording straight into the computer (no interface).
I tried using an MBox, but the computer won't even recognize it...(if anyone's got suggestions for why that is, I'll gladly take them...).
My main question is the same as Charles's, however - how come the input level is so soft when recording using the "Built-In Input" (where I can use a mic, and have mobility) as opposed to the "Built-In Microphone"?

  • Logic Express Create MIDI from Audio Voice Track

Is it possible to take a sung voice recording and generate a MIDI track in Logic Express? I don't need to replicate the voice in the MIDI track, but would like the pitches and rhythms for editing in Finale.

That is a brilliant request, I'd love to see an answer to this myself. I've thought of this type of feature in the past and seen that there are tools out there that can convert audio from a guitar or other instrument to create midi - so the technology is there - the question is can Logic do it? hmmm curious too.

  • Audio Input to Record Old Tape Cassettes?

    Hello,
(Apologies in advance if this is the wrong forum.)
    I have a MacBook Pro.
I have a lot audio cassettes that I would like to digitize. Does any body have suggestions on how to do that?
    Software apps that work well?
I'm new to Apple/Mac and need my way around a little.
    HP   Mac OS X (10.4.9)

I have no experience with Mac equipment but can explain the situation for PCs...
Under pressure from copyright holders, most computer manufacturers have disabled or even removed the ability to record the audio output from computers.  This is not to do with Audition--it goes right into the computer's operating system.
Were you on a PC I could give you a couple of things to check in case the recording capability is only disabled, not removed, but this is becoming rare these days.  It's far more likely that the facility has been completely removed from your Mac OS.
I hope I'm wrong and that Apple hasn't succombed to the same pressure as the PC/Windows world--but I wouldn't be too hopeful.

Its like my Microphone doesn't work with Videos and Speaker phone...its getting really annoying it works fine in Voice Memos and Voice calls (Without SP)

Anyone know how to fix this?

Make sure the mic isn't ubstructed when taking videos. I know thats seems like duh thing but your mic is on the bottom left of the device with the screen facing you. A lot of times  people don't relize they are doing it.

  • Recording 2 Audio Inputs

I need system sounds and microphone inputs to be recorded at the same time. Renarrating after one audio input is recorded isn't an option, as I need to capture a conversation between two people in an online enviroment.
Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

    Hi there
If your only goal is to mix system sounds and the mic, you might also wish to obtain some simple cables from a place such as Radio Shack. You could insert one cable that runs from the speaker out or headphones jack into a Y cable that has two inputs. You would then connect the mic to the other input and then connect the other end into the Mic input of the PC.
You need to investigate using a mixer. With a mixer, you have one connection between the Mixer and the PC and you then connect a variety of input sources to the mixer.
Use Google and search the web for mixers. I think you can find some for $100 or so.
    Cheers... Rick

  • M-audio fast track issue

I have just bought a m-audio fast track recording software for garageband to record guitar. It works when I select 'real intrsument', however, it doesn't pick up any sound when I select 'electric guitar'. has anyone else had this problems while using 'm-audio'? what is the best way to deal with this?

Real Instrument and Electric Guitar are the same the difference is the effects presets. There is no reason it could work with one and dot the other.
Make sure you selected the interface in garageband preferences and have the correct input channel selected in the track info > input source.

Hi, I just bought the same piece of equipment. I can get it to input into the computer by changing the system preferances and clicking on the USB choice. Then, I can see the modulation on the computer system. However, I can't get it to interface with Garage Band even though Apple said it was plug and play. Garage Band can't tell it's there. I've emailed M-Audio. ([email protected]) I'll keep you posted.

  • External stereo device to Powerbook G4 audio input

    Hi
I am trying to convert all my old cassettes into MP3's. I was trying to use Audacity which supposedly can grab the audio from the audio input and record it in MP3 format. It seems that my Powerbook G4 recongnizes the built-in mic, cd device, and the USB/firewire ports as valid audio input devices. How can I connect my cassette recorder to my Powerbook? I tried to connect it to the minijack port (the one with two triangles and a circle inside) but the input was not reconginzed. Can anyone suggest anything please?
Also, (may be a bit out of topic) would iTunes be able to do the recording?
    Regards
    Arijit

I have been unable to get the microphone input with a Viewsonic 22" monitor with webcam to work with either iChat or iVisit with my Mac Pro. There have been other reports on the web about newer versions of the OS 10 inactivating the audio input for several programs. Is this why the microphone does not work or is it true that the audio input does not act as one? If the audio input does not work with an external microphone, what is it for?

  • How do you record an external Midi Instrument + Software instrument track down to a combined Audio track ?

I have two piano sounds I'm trying to blend into one. One is an external MIDI module set up as an external instrument within Logic and the other is a software plugin instrument (Ivory II). I'm trying to record the blended pianos into a single audio track so I can ditch the midi track and more so the CPU intense software Instrument track (it's killing my setup....). For the life of me I can't figure out how to assign both these entities as inputs and get them to record simultaneosuly onto an audio track.
My setup is a Presonus Studiolive 16.4.2 with the following assignments:
The external MIDI module's audio output is routed stereo directly into channel strips 9 and 10. By default the firewire output of this channel strip is returned to firewire outputs 9-10 on the studiolive, but this really doesn't matter since recorded audio is being monitored thru the main output buss assigned to channels 17 and 18.
My software plugin (Ivory II) is routed to output channels 17 and 18 which is the default setting for routing the output to the master buss for the Presonus.
On my audio track that's setup in Logic I can assign the inputs to 9 and 10 and I get the external midi module's output to record, but I cannot find any way to get the software instruments output into this mix because there is no input assignment for this.
Is there any way to combine these two entities and assign them to record onto a single audio track or am I missing something here? If there's no simple way to do this, can somebody offer any tip or ideas on how to accomplish the same thing here. I really need to ditch the software plugin. My setup only seems to be able to handle one plug in at a time on the software instrument side. Not sure why that is because my setup is not that old and the memory on my MBP is maxed out at 4GB....but that's another topic of discussion
Any suggenstions would be much appreciated...

    Thanks for the reply....
I actually tried freezing the software instrument track and that had little if no effect on CPU. I then read in the book or somewhere that the freeze function really only works on effect plugins. Don't know if that's true in all cases, but that seems to be what's happening.  Still would like to combine these tracks and I'm guessing I'm going to have to get creative with bussing or subgroups to make this happen. Unfortunately I think the fact that my Presonus board has hardmapped output routings for all the inputs makes that difficult, but haven't actually tried yet. I'm thinking if I can reroute the midi modules audio output input into the Presonus to a subgroup and then route the software instrument plug in to the same subgroup that I can then mix/capture this and hopefully route the audio's input to the subgroup to pick up the mix.
Does this make sense to anybody reading this?
We'll see and I'll post the results if it works....
    thanks...b

  • Midi and Audio tracks simultaneously armed for recording

All, whilst engaged in laying down the bass track for the guitar solo section of my latest monster his, I encountered one of those sorts of frustrations that makes one long for some means of swift egress from this mortal coil, this vale of tears: that is, while laying down my totally awesome bass track that when they hear it will send JP Jones and Boosty Collins to employee as actuaries, I kept getting the hateful "unable to synchronize the audio and midi error." I'll spare you the catalog of the various lame attempts I understood to remedy this problem, as well as the curses directed toward my fate, and Daw ineptitude in general. Then I nnoticed that both the software instrument tracks (Addictive drums) and the audio track (aforementioned bass) were both armed for recording, signified by the red R in the track header! Well, upon de-arming the software instrument track I was able to record by bass line in a mimimum of takes, and as visions of illegal intozicants and comen of questionable morals dance through my noggin as recompsense for my trouble, with to make the point to all relative newbies such as myself that the answer to problems that seem on surface intractable as usually staring you right in the glazed eyeball.

  • Recording with M-Audio Fast Track  USB Audio Interface

New Mac owner and am completely lost. I am wanting to record guitar and vocal tracks into GB and when I plugged in the M-Audio I could see a wave file when after I hit the record button but I couldn't hear anything. I selected it as the default for input and output and turned the monitor on...but am getting zero sound. HELP!

I actually just picked one up and this is what the process is...
I must reiterate the first line... Do not install any of the packaged software as it does not help, or do anything beneficial... just use Garageband.
This is to record a plug in guitar.
IT IS NOT NECESSARY TO LOAD ANY DISCS THAT COME WITH THE DEVICE
    1. Connect M-Audio Fast Track USB to appropriate USB port on computer.
ex. MacBook Pro - use forward port (port furthest away from display)
Also, see note 2 for M-Audio knowledge base, support etc...
    2. Open System Preferences and:
-Select M-Audio Fast Track USB icon
-Select "About" button and note Audio Firmware version
-Select "Updates" to open M-Audio web site
-Select: USB Audio Series<Fast Track USB< MAC OS 10.5.7 (or appropriate operating system)
-Note version number of latest drive and download if
    necessary to update your M-Audio
    - Select "Sound" in Hardware row of System Preferences
-Select "Input" button and select M-Audio Fast Track USB
    - No need to change "Output" regardless of how you want to listen to playback!
    3. Connect guitar to M-Audio box (a pre-amp will boost output, but is not necessary)
    - Make sure button on rear of M-Audio box is selected properly for guitar
    4. Open Garage Band (Do Not open Garage Band prior to connecting M-Audio)
    - Select New Project - Electric Guitar
    5. Open Garage Band Preferences
    - Select "Audio/MIDI" button
    -Audio Output select:
    - "Built-in Output" to use computer's speaker or headphones/speakers connected directly to computer OR
    - "M-Audio Fast Track USB" to listen to headphones/speakers
connected directly to M-Audio box (use Mix knob and Output knob on front of M-Audio box to control ouput if choosing this set-up)
    -Audio Input select:
    -"M-Audio Fast track USB"
    6. Choose an Amp model in Garage Band
    - Double-click picture of amp (this displays rear picture of amp and access to settings)
-Select: Input Source : Mono2(M-Audio Fast Track USB) NOT MONO 1!
of if using Mic and guitar : Stereo2 (M-Audio Fast Track USB)
    7. Record
This saved me from throwing the thing out the window... It works well now!

  • Can't recording  Midi  and Audio at the same time

I'm in GREAT need of help. I can't record midi and audio at the same time. I'm using an M AUDIO project mix I/O. I know this is VERY basic stuff but I can't seem to get it to work.I can record multiple audio at once. ANd I can record midi but not at the same time. PLEASE help . Is there a setting somewhere I need to change ? Thanks
    Tracy

    Hi!
Enable all audio tracks (R) you wish to record. Then make sure you select the audio instrument you are using on the left of the arrange page (track list). If you here your input, hold shift, then highlight (gray) the mentioned audio tracks you wish to record on. When R is red, and the proper tracks are grey, you can record. Hope that made sense!

  • Cant record into to logic pro 9 using samson l1200 live mixer, System/Pref/Audio input tab says selected device has no input control

Hi Im new to this so bare with me..When I connect my Samson l1200 live usb mixer to my Imac 7,1 Intel duo core 3gb ram, osx10.6.8, via usb cable to record vocals/instruments, in System Pref/Audio/Output tab is set to mixer's UsbAudioCodec driver, (Im able to hear playback into headphones via the mixer, and hear the mic when spoken into it but cant record a track into Logic...System/Pref/Audio input tab says selected device has no input control, Ive set the input/output settings in Logic to UsbAudioCodec but still no good...Would it be either the way the mixer is set up? or is this mixer (Samson l1200) not compatible with my particular Imac? I hope I may be able to help as Im only a student trying to record my band thanks

    I perfectly understand your problem.
First... just to make sure, in Logic's preferences /Audio make sure Universal Track Mode IS checked, it should be enabled. (I think it probably is just checking)
Second... if you record a track in a new Logic project and then go to the next track to record an overdubbed guitar part, are both parts recorded on the 2nd track?
What I'm asking is overdubbing working differently for two or three recorded tracks as opposed to overdubbing with an imported track.
What I think is happening is you have the main stereo output being recorded into Logic so if you playback an imported or recorded track from Logic while recording a 2nd track (overdub), both are going to be recorded on the 2nd track.
I took a look at the manual, here's the relevant sections.
34 – SEND – USB input send switch
The USB INPUT switch allows you to select one of
two stereo (or two channel) signal paths to feed the
USB output to send to the connected PC. When the
INPUT switch is in the up position, the USB signal will
feed from the MAIN left right mix. When the INPUT
switch is in the down position, the USB signal will
feed from the AUX 1 and AUX 2 buses which enables
you to create a unique mix to send to the PC.
    35 – RETURN – USB return switch
The USB RETURN switch allows you to select one of
two stereo return paths to receive USB audio from
the connected PC. When the ASSIGN switch is in the
up position, the USB signal will return to the MAIN
mix bus. When the ASSIGN switch is in the down
position, the USB signal will return to the last pair
of stereo channels which enables you to playback a
recorded track in the MAIN mix, and you can use the
channels AUX sends to feed any of the AUX buses.
This will let you hear the USB playback tracks in the
    monitor mixes.
36 – MONITOR – USB headphone enable switch
Press the USB MONITOR switch down if you want
to hear the signal from the USB return in the
    headphones.
