MIDI synth on Audigy

Does anyone know if the Audigy 2 NX is capable of hardware MIDI synth? Right now MIDIs sound pretty bad on my laptop, and I compose music so it would be helpful to have MIDI quality on my laptop be somewhat comparable to the quality on my desktop PC (which has an Audigy ).
Thanks...

I don't understand. First of all, the MIDI inputs work with the XP drivers (but the sound card doesn't), so I know the hardware is able to be seen by the software. I understand that MS removed MIDI support from the OS, but shouldn't the drivers recognize the ports on the card and use them? I also believe that the MIDI ports worked under Vista when I first did the upgrade. They only stopped working when I upgraded the mother board and CPU in the PC. So what gives?Larry

  • Audigy/MIDI Synth discrepencies with Hardware Accelerat

Hello all, I have a little bit of a problem with my SB Audigy and my Logitech Z-540 speakers. I have a bit of a problem with hardware acceleration it seems. I mainly use this computer for gaming, and I've noticed that I'll hear a sort of popping at times coming from my left speakers while playing. Upon numerous Google searches, I've come to no avail as to what may be the cause of this problem.
However, my speakers are properly set up, my drivers are all up to date as well as the software. I've found two things rectify my issue (but at undesirable consequence):
. I mute the MIDI Synth through volume controls, however this is inconvenient because I play some games that utilize MIDI for music (Blood, Doom, etc.).
    2. I set the hardware acceleration to "Basic", but that in turn disables my EAX and other features.
Would anyone know what might be causing this issue of mine? Any tips, or any help whatsoever would be greatly appreciated; this has been a most vexing issue for me.
    Thanks,
    Veldrin

Its a hardware mixer, wich is using your RAM for storing sounds. You have two synths with hardware support. And on the audigy, there is an additinal software mixer, too. (dont know if the x-fi supports it, too)
In Vista there you have to download a little tool to set the hardware synth as default. search function

  • X-Fi Midi Synth Reverb and Chorus Controller Is

I bought an X-Fi a couple of weeks ago, and I soon realized that midi effects controllers cc9 and cc93 (reverb and chorus) didn't work with the X-Fi hardware synths. I called CL Technical support about this and this is the response I got:
"I have spoken with our testers who say that the CC9-Reverb and CC93-Chorus amounts are set in theSF2 file. That value is typically set to hit 20% at maximum CC data entry (27). To work aroundthis, you will need to use NRPNs to set the amount to a greater level, or edit the SF2 contentitself. Please let me know if this information hel
    ps.
No, it doesn't help, reverb and chorus effects in midi files are set with midi controllers #9 and #93, this is true of virtually every midi file available on the internet, including commercial midi files. CL's testers are wrong. SF2 files have embedded minimum amounts of reverb and chorus for certain patches, midi song files customize the amounts of reverb and chorus with controllers cc9 and cc93 to suit each particular song, and even change it during the song. Adding NRPN's involves editing the midi file by calculating the MSB and LSB for each desired value and adding four controllers for every channel of every song every time you want a change in the effects. Controller cc9 and cc93 have control sliders or knobs in every major audio/midi multitrack program and these require no editing. A midi synth that ignores this loses much of its realism, and this just isn't acceptable for those of us who make serious use of midi song files. I have several thousand midi files and it would take months or even years to edit them all. This is a bug that may only affect a small percentage of X-Fi users, but for those it affects, it's a major bug. From the response I received from tech support, it appears that they aren't planning to do anything about it, so I thought I would publicize the issue here and see if I can't change their minds. I drove a 20 mile round trip and paid $40 for my X-Fi and I've had to pull it out of my computer and put my Audigy back in. I'm not a happy camper at this point, but if CL is going to fix the issue, I'm willing to wait for a while because I think thye X-Fi is worth it.

Maxing everything was the first thing I tried, and no go. Still so little reverb it was hard to tell if it was working, and no detectable chorus. I even went back with Vienna 2.4 and checked my soundfont again, and all was as it should be.
Putting together a brand new sound card is a major undertaking and it's understandable if something gets missed here and there, especially as most of the designers and testers probably aren't serious musicians. It's easy to see how this one could slip past, especially if they were using Soundfonts that have reverb and chorus programmed in to some of the instruments. Everything works fine until you start varying cc9 and cc92 and nothing happens. I haven't checked because I removed the X-Fi and put my Audigy back in, but it's a good bet that none of the midi effect controllers work properly. This is a relati'vely minor issue for most users, but for serious musicians who use midi, it's major. However, I'm sure CL will fix the problem as soon as possible. I just hope it doesn't take too long because the X-Fi is a really, really good sounding card, except for this one problem.
Gi've the X-Fi another try. I had these same issues at first but now cc9 and cc92 work in Sonar4.
These controls work, its just that the reverb is very low and the chorus has to be activated. In the effect editor choose the amphitheater preset as oppose to the default for reverb as it is the most audible.
    follow these steps:
    . choose creation mode
    2. enable EAX effects and set to max
    3. select amphitheater preset for reverb
    4. activate the 5 bus buttons for chorus in master aux effects box (Front L\R, ect)
step 4 should work best for stereo setup
    This should do it.

  • GM MIDI Synth other than QuickTime?

    Hi~ guys~
    I'm just wondering
if we can find any GM MIDI Synths other than QuickTime synth to use in Logic Pro 8.
    (not the external hardware synths)
if there are some,,, could you let me know what they are??
    thanks~

You can use SoundFont libraries (they are free).
    Search for Airfont (76Mb), FluidR3 (141.5Mb), SGM-180 (175Mb).
Download them (or their updated versions), uncompress with SFarkXT (http://melodymachine.com/) and place them in:
    /Library/Audio/Sounds/Banks
Then you will be able to choose which one to use as a default QuickTime synth or to use into Logic.
    cheers

  • MIDI/MIDI 2 on Audigy 2 ZS Platin

I love my Audigy 2 ZS Platinum -- I have one question, though. I have MIDI ports on the front-panel module and also via the 5-pin MIDI/game port on the back panel, and I notice in my MIDI software that I have two options to choose from when configuring my MIDI port:
SB Audigy 2 ZS MIDI IO (000)
SB Audigy 2 XS MIDI IO 2 (000)
It would appear that there are two separate MIDI systems. Is this true? If so, I would think that I could connect my MIDI keyboard to the front panel input, route that to my sequencer software, then run the output from the front panel to the input of the back panel, which I could route to other MIDI software, then out to my MIDI sound module.
There's only one snag -- Whether I hook the keyboard to the front or back panel, the MIDI signals come through on both of the selectable MIDI ports. Is there a way to configure the system so that the two MIDI ports are truly separate, or am I wrong on my guess that these are two separate ports? And if so, why does the software find two MIDI ports to choose from?
I can't find any reference to the two ports in the Audigy documentation, so I hope someone here can clear up this mystery!

Seems that Midi I/0 2 is the midi via the game port and Midi I/O , the front.

  • External midi synth not working

    Hi,
I want to get my nord wave (hardware synth) working in logic.
My main audio interface i use is the apogee duet, but since that doesn't have midi in/out ports, i am connecting the nord to midi in and out to my native instruments audio8 interface.
I have connected the nord going midi in (from nord) to midi out (on the audio8) and midi out (on the audio8) to midi in (on the nord). The nord is also connected to my mac pro with usb and is also powered by mains.
When i go to the audio midi setup on the mac, it doesn't see my nord at all.
I have gone into logics environemnt and tried all sorts of things to get it working but just cannot get the nord working.
I can use the nord as a midi keyboard to play soft synths in logic, but can't get it to play on an external midi track.
Any help or suggestions would really be appreciated.
    many thanks

That is twice Nord Midi in and twice Audio8 out. Are you sure?
From Nord to Audio8 would mean Nord MIDI Out to Audio8 Midi in, in my book...
When i go to the audio midi setup on the mac, it doesn't see my nord at all.
well, it shouldn't. AMS only lists Interfaces automatically. You should create the Nord yourself and cable it virtually in AMS as you have cabled it physically.

To use Midi coming from Logic to the Nord you must load the AU instrument *External Instrument* in a Midi/Software Instrument track. Also see p. 237 and further of the LP8 User Manual.

  • Can Garage Band play an external MIDI synth?

Can Garage Band play an external MIDI keyboard?
I have an external MIDI keyboard/synth.
In Garage Band Preferences I’ve set Input Device and Output Device to my external MIDI keyboard.
I can play the external keyboard with Garage Band in Record mode and it records just fine.
However, when I select Garage Band to play, nothing plays on the external keyboard.
I can set the Output Device to Build-In Output and Garage Band plays the software synth on my computer just fine.
Can Garage Band play an external MIDI keyboard?

    Thanks lenoie
What I'm hoping for is for Garage Band to send MIDI out to the external keyboard.
Does anyone know if Garage Band can do this?
    Thanks :-)

  • Best workflow when recording ext midi synths to audio?

I have used Logic for some time, but either midi only projects or audio only recording. Now I want to record external midi gear first as midi tracks then when they are right, record each as individual audio tracks to free up the midi gear for more parts. Everybody must do that. Bounce in place isn't going to work and the External Instrument plugin doesn't seem to have any advantages to a midi track. So I figure the workflow is:-
Record and edit midi part until its right
Record to an audio track the output from synth while midi part plays it
Bounce the audio track if you want to make the insert effects permanent
Mute and maybe hide midi track
It just seems clunky because the audio recording of the synth is the raw uneffected input, even though I have the effects set how I always want them, I would rather record with insert effects included just once and forget it. And the clicking around between the audio track to prepare recording and the midi track to play notes on a keyboard to sound check is silly.
Is this just how it is, or is there an easier workflow?

You could aways set up an input channel strip with the effects you wanted, this will print them permanetly when recording, this method eliminates one (bounce) step. On the other hand, if in the end you decide that polysynth has too much chorus, you will have to re-record the part.

  • Control external MIDI synth with Logic Pro X

I purchaced Logic Pro X to use it as a MIDI-sequencer for my external stagepiano: the Roland RD-700sx including two expansion boards (SRX-04 and SRX-10). I want to make records to create my own music. Before I record it as audio I want to record it as MIDI, because in that form it's easier to make adjustments.
The RD-700sx is GM-compatible, though the better quality sounds are stored in certain banks, which one can select bij entering a specific number to the MIDI control assignments MSB and LSB. For example: to select the Superior Grand Piano, MSB = 87, LSB = 64 and PC (program change) = 1. To select the 60's E. Piano 2, MSB = 87, LSB = 65 and PC = 5. To select the first tone wheel organ MSB = 112, LSB = 0 and PC = 1. To select the SX Rock Kit (drums) MSB = 86, LSB = 72 and PC = 2. And to select the staccato cello on my expansion board MSB = 93, LSB = 3 and PC = 79.
I spent a lot of time searching and asking on the internet how to select the desired sounds, but I don't know how to do it. So far I know you have to create a multitimbral MIDI environment and on each of the 16 channels you can assign a bank and enter the values of MSB and LSB. I found this article: Logic Pro/Express 9: Defining Custom Bank Messages - Apple Support
I understand a part of it, though I have too little experience with Logic Pro X to get the job done. Can someone please explain it to me from the beginning to the end? You would help me a lot!!!

did you do a firmware update  on 003 ?

  • Audigy PCMIA synth(s)

I thought that this forum would be the best place to ask this: Shouldn´t there be two soundfont synths in Audigy 2 PCMIA soundcard? I had them both when I first installed the software and drivers, but when I installed the driver update, the other synth was gone! I couldn´t see it in "devices" or in the midisequencer. Strange, isn´t it? I tried to reinstall the soundcard with the old drivers from the cd, and I got the both synths visible in "devices" and in the sequencer, but the other of them didn´t really work (the sound was coming only from the laptop speakers). And after the driver update, the result was the same: Only one synth.
Any ideas? It would be nice to have two working synths if they are somewhere there!

Which driver update you did, from Creative Support or that one from station-drivers?
If the latter one, then you may need to reinstall original drivers (use driver cleaner too).
If not the latter ones, then why not try those drivers.

  • Audigy 2 ZS Platinum Pro and Inspire T7700 does not recognize Mic on Audio Control

    Hi folks,
I decided to hook up my headphone and mic sets to the Audio Control Pod for the first time recently to chat online. I'm not sure if I ever tried this when I bought the Inspire T7700 speaker system, but I cannot seem to get any voice to come through in Windows' Sound Recorder (the headphones work fine). I'm hoping that someone here can help...otherwise, I suppose I'll have to find an alternate solution than using my soundcard system.
    Here are some specs:
OS: Windows XP SP2 and all current updates
Soundcard: Audigy 2 ZS Platinum Pro
Speakers: Inspire T7700 with Audio Control Pod (contains the headphone and mic jack)
    Here's what I have tried:
    . Updated drivers to: SBAX_WBUP2_LB_2_09_006.exe
    2. Tested headsets and mics out on another one of my computers with a SoundBlaster Li've. They work fine.
    3. Set each audio source with full volume in the Recording Control window as the source while recording in Windows' Sound Recorder (I know some of these aren't right, but I tried them all nonetheless):
    - MIDI Synth
    - Line-In 3
    - Line-In /Mic (this should be the one, I think)
    - S/PDIF-In
    - Auxiliary (this might be the one for the Audio Control Pod)
    - "What U Hear"
    - Line-In 2
    - CD Digital
    - Wave
    4. Installed the Creative software from the official CD to manage the audio and speaker settings. Retested the same as item 3 above within this software. Same results.
    5. Disconnected the external I/O hub (since I am connecting to the Audio Control Pod, which connects to the speaker system and then my sound card). Interestingly, the Line-In /Mic input disappeared. All that I saw for an input (I believe) was Auxiliary. I tried even that as noted in item 3, but nothing.
Has anyone had any luck in getting a mic from a headphone set to work with the Audio Control Pod for the Inspire T7700 speaker system along with the Audigy 2 ZS Platinum Pro?
Thanks in advance for the help!

Read the FAQ on top of the soundcard forum concerning SPDIF and digital out. The reason is very easy to find out if you read that. In short: the digital out can only send out a PCM stereo signal (which is why you only get FL/FR sound) and an encoded AC-3 signal.
