Midi with garageband

hello.. so i've had a lot of trouble connecting my keyboard via midi to my keyboard and using it in either protools or garageband.. i'm using a midisport 1 x 1 and going midi out from the keyboard (a yamaha p90 i believe) to the midi in and then obviously into the computer via usb.
i got it to work not too long ago and have no idea how i did it but when i went to use it again it was a no go. it seems that the computer is recognizing it in audio mid setup and so is garageband saying there is one midi port or whatever available to record from but i can't get any sound when i hit the keys nor can i record anything.. no signal.
so what's up with that?? thanks for the help in advance.

I'm actually running tiger.. i may be in the wrong edition of garageband. not sure what it is but anyway. in garageband i have tried changing the drivers etc.. don't know what else to do.

  • Is there any way to use the Korg Kaossilator Pro with Garageband 6.0.5?

I'm getting pretty decent at working around with the newest version of Garageband. I've gotten my Akai MPK Mini (usb/midi keyboard) to work by adjusting a few preferences here and there, but for the last week I have been trying and trying to get my Korg Kaossilator Pro to hook up MIDI with Garageband. I understand if the program/software isn't as advanced as Logic or Ableton (be getting those soon!) If anybody could help me it would be MUCH appreciated
P.S. if anybody is having troubles with exporting the AIFF/WAV/MP3 audio files I could give you a bit of help. I have figured out how to correctly export the audio loops and sounds that I have made from my Kaossilator Pro into Garageband! It is quite simple actually and is ALOT easier than you would think. Following the tempo/pitch for your song w/ these WAV/AIFF files is really easy too! I have made almost 4 songs now just using samples and loops from my Kaossilator Pro. I just would like to know if anybody has found out how to use it MIDI w/ Garageband? It would REALLY help me out Thanks!

yeeeeah thats what i've been figuring out for the last 12 hours haha. kinda've a pain but hey it works out. u can still throw some pretty cool effects and what not. Even with MIDI cables running from my kaoss pro into my mac doesn't work. i can transfer the loops I make on my kaoss pro to the editor on my comp, then transfer those files to GB then go from there. It ***** there isn't a way to hook it in and sync it w/ GB so you can hit record then start jamming on the kaoss pro. Thanks for the response though!

  • I'm getting a stuck MIDI note with Garageband 10.0.2?

Using IMAC 3.2Ghz Intel Core i5 running Garageband 10.0.2 with a Yamaha PSR-3500 with MIDI to USB interface.
Everything seems fine at first but then one note will be 'stuck' and continuously sound. Some following actions may stop it, including switching the keyboard mains power on and off. It doesn't seem to be a continuous signal sent because I can see the corresponding MIDI note is not appearing on the piano roll etc. It's just like Garageband 'won't let the note go'?
Any ideas would be appreciated, especially if there are any long-time MIDI users out there - I am brand new to MIDI, via  Garageband.

Welcome to the Apple Community Russell.
Assuming this is not the first time you have used your Apple TV
You might try restarting the Apple TV by removing ALL the cables for 30 seconds.
Also try restarting the router. (Also try removing it’s power cord for at least 30 seconds)
If the problem persists, try a restore, you may want to try the previous procedures several times before doing this.
If restoring from the Apple TV doesn't help, try restoring from iTunes using a USB cable.
If this is a new Apple TV, in addition to trying the above, it may also be that your network router is not allowing access to the timeserver, check that your router allows access over port 123.

  • How to play wav files with Garageband/Midi keyboard

    Hello,
I'm using Garagband (on my MAC, not iPad) and a midi keyboard for making songs. I just got a couple of cd's from Miroslav Philharmonik, but the sounds are all in standalone WAV files. There is no installation required. How can i use these sounds with Garageband? Must i copy/paste them in a specified directory on the HD? Or is a sample library necessary? I tried drag and drop, but that dind't work out...
Thanx in advance for your help.

    this should help:
    import com.ms.win32.*;
    public void play()
              try
              URL url = new URL("file","C:\\","Hallo.wav");
              String wav= new String(url.getHost()+url.getFile());
              Winmm.PlaySound(wav,1,1);
              catch(MalformedURLException e)
    or something like this ;))

  • TS1702 Using an iPad camera connection kit and a MIDI to USB cable to interface a MIDI keyboard with GarageBand. It works flawlessly... almost...

I'm using an iPad camera connection kit and a MIDI to USB cable to interface a MIDI keyboard with GarageBand. It works flawlessly... until I use the sustain pedal. Once the pedal is depressed while playing a given note, from then on, the pedal itself plays the note every time it is depressed. It's not the keyboard or the pedal. I've tried others. That leaves the app or the connection between the iPad and the keyboard. I find it hard to believe I'm the only person who is experiencing this problem. Anyone have a fix?

Yes.  There are a ton of write-ups on how to do the connections.   I connect my m-audio Keystation 61 es through the CCK to my iPad and use GarageBand to control it.  Some keyboards require a powered USB hub to make things work.  I use a belkin 4 port hub in my own setup.   Here is a link to tested / verified keyboards that work via the CCK:  http://iosmidi.com/devices/

Only the red light turning on and off at the screnn of the MBPro and on my Apogee GIO (Guitar Interface Midi) switch button but the effect wha wha won't work.
    HOPE YOU UNDERSTAND MY ENGLISH

    Pancenter...
Yes... but I have come across some setups that came with a native SL (and even one Lion!) installation.. that somehow had a corrupted or older Prokit installed for some unknown reason... and given it's a quick fix to try.. I thought I'd mention it..
I frankly don't think it is entirely a Prokit issue itself, but it wouldn't do any harm to try and install v7 just in case it is part of the problem...
    +1 on the UAD stuff....
Also, at the time it crashed... according to the logs...the OP was running Ableton Live at the same time, presumably rewired with Logic... so add all that together with UAD plugins... and that's quite a load on the system...
Finally in thread 32 there is a weird exception msg relating to the Trash2 plugin.. that I haven't seen before...
    Thread 32:

That might be nothing... but as i said, I haven't seen that one before and given what else is going on.. it might be involved too... or nothing to do with that at all!

  • How to use Alesis synthesizer with GarageBand

I have a Alesis QS6.1 64 voice expandable synthesizer. I have purchase a MIDI to USB converter cable and attached the synthesizer to my Power Mac G5 system that is running Mac OS X 10.5.5.
The Audio MIDI Setup program on the Macintosh indicates that it successfully identifies the MIDI device.
I want to be able to use the synthesizer to record in GarageBand. However, when I open GarageBand v2.0.2 and play the synthesizer sound comes out of the synthesizer speaker and nothing happens on the computer. There is no indication that GarageBand is responding at all to the synthesizer.
What is needed so that the synthesizer keyboard will work with GarageBand?

  • Using TASCAM US-122 with GarageBand...doesn't seem to work

And not only with GarageBand...the software that the US-122 came with isn't even picking up the signals omitted from the TASCAM itself. I hooked up a keyboard to my TASCAM using a cable (I'm not sure what it's called...but it's the same thing you would use to connect a guitar with an amp), plugging each end into the INPUT (TASCAM) and OUTPUT (keyboard) jacks. The interface is showing me signs that the connection to and from the keyboard works via flashes on a green LED...but when I try to clarify the connection on my computer, the software (tuner, buffer, etc.) won't show any signs of connection. The USB cable is connected, I set my sound up exactly the way the instruction manual for the TASCAM said to, but it's just not picking up. It could be the interface itself, however...I can't hear anything when I plug a pair of headphones into the US-122. Do I have to use a MIDI cable, or is my interface not operating properly? Help me, please!
    iMac G4   Mac OS X (10.4.6)

You didn't mention the kind of track in GB you are trying to create, but if you are connecting the keyboard with a guitar chord to the Tascam, you will need to set up a Real Instrument Track in GB to hear anything. If your keyboard has a midi out, use a midi cable to the midi input of the Tascam, create Software Instrument Track, and you will hear something. But with a guitar chord, it won't send the right signal to a Software Instrument Track. The headphone jack in the Tascam monitors the signal coming back to it out of GB (if you choose the US-122 as your monitor in GB's preferences), so you wouldn't hear your keyboard if the track is not set up correctly. It could be the drivers, but since you didn't mention the type of keyboard or the type of GB track, I thought that might be a possible answer as well.

  • Problem Using Zoom H4 as an Audio Interface with Garageband

I'm new to GB and I am having problems getting started using my Zoom H4 as an Audio Interface with Garageband on my iMAC.
I'm fairly certain that I have the connection and all of the setting configurations correct, and yet I cannot get any sound from the H4 into GB.
I do see the sound volume registering in the Input Level window of the H4, but not in GB.
Here is what I see in my Garageband:
    Preferences >
    Audio/MIDI >
    - System Setting
    - Built-in Microphone
    - Built-in Input
    - H4 Audio IN (when H4 is connected to the iMAC via USB)
Of course I have selected the H4.
Any help or insight would be greatly appreciated. Operators standing by!

I don't have a H4 but do have a H2. Did you set the H4 as a audio interface, after you plug it in choose interface in the H4 screen?
Did you choose the H4 input channel in the track info?

  • Anyone here use a DrumKAT with Garageband?

Maybe someone can help. My setup is DrumKAT (dk10) into iMac with MIDI-USB cable. My problem is when I close the HiHat with my Pintech pedal, all the pad sound start wavering with tremelo. It does not happen if I play through EZDrummer with Garageband closed, but I'll be needing to record in Garageband and I like the standard drum sounds in Garageband '09.
Does anyone have the answer as to why this is happening? Or if you have a DrumKAT and do not notice this, what is your setup?

Update, Here we are a month later. I upgraded from a DrumKAT dk10 to a 3.8. I did this because I discovered the dk10 didn't have a continuously variable hit hat control function. Well, one of the first things I did after getting lost in the complicated DrumKAT interface for a few hours, was controlling Garageband.
No boing boing with the 3.8.....however, now the hat pedal raises the note like a tympani pedal. I'm sure this is not an Apple problem, but a DrumKAT problem, but still, if anyone is using any KAT with any Apple computer, please respond.

  • Alesis Multimix8 usb with Garageband??

So I just purchased the Alesis multimix8usb mixer. Preferences are set correctly, usb connected, no drivers required...yada, yada.
Right now I have two mics connected (line1 and line 3, of the 4 available mic/line-in) and I've created to new tracks for the mics in garageband. My problem is that I can't get separate tracks for each mic. No matter what setting I use for the Input Source, I can't get a separate track. One track is mono1 and the other is mono2, but both mics are working on each track. When I enable both tracks for recording (to record live), no matter the input source (mono1 and mono2), both mics are on both tracks.
The answer is probably simple, as it usually is, but with my inexperience I have just been trying all possible combinations. Can anyone shed light? Or is anyone familiar with the set up for using this mixer with garageband? Any info or tips on using this particular mixer with garageband would be helpful.
    Thanks!

GB audio input set to USB Codec (mixer)
output is built in audio (using studio monitors hooked up to computer)
Audio/Midi preferences: USB Codec input (format 44100.0 Hz and 2ch-16bit)
Built -in -Audio is Default Output

  • Using Amplitube Metal with Garageband??

    Hey everyone,
I'm very new to the mac world - fiance and I just bought one last month. We also purchased Amplitube Metal (which I suppose is some king of program that just gives you a lot of different effects) and the stealth pedal thing (sorry, I don't know much about either lol...)
He is having problems running it with garageband. He is able to open up amplitube under the effects I guess, but garageband doesn't seem to want to work with it as it keeps quitting unexpectedly - and he cannot figure out how to record in garageband WITH amplitube effects.
If anyone can help- please do. I've been googling all day but can't seem to find any helpful info.
Also, sorry, I really have no idea what I'm talking about and neither does he lol

I never used a stealth pedal or amplitube but that won't stop me
You usually start by plugging guitar into a line in on the pedal and usb to computer. Open garageband (real instrument) click on Garageband > Preferences > Audio Midi and select the input in this case the usb codec, stealth or whatever the Mac see it as also choose the output (built in, line out or stealth pedal) whatever your speakers are plugged into. Open the track info window choose the input channel usually mono 1 or mono 2 and turn monitoring on. Make sure track is record enabled.
I believe Amplitube is a AU plugin so choose it from a empty slot in the effect edit window. Double clicking the Amplitube icon should open it in a window to make adjustments.

  • Using Yamaha Keyboard with GarageBand

Tried my Yamaha keyboard with GarageBand for the first time. To my amazement, it worked. However:
Cant' seem to get the volume up (on the Yamaha Keyboard). Checked all the volume settings, including the iMac's System Preferences, GarageBand volume settings but it's still relatively "soft."
I'm using a USB 2.0 15-ft. cable. Could the length of the cable have anything to do with this. Would a shorter USB 2.0 cable.........say 4-ft. ...... make a difference?
Thanks in advance for your suggestions

don't think I have some of the features to control
sound you suggest. (GB's Track Fader? Master Volume
    Fader? "Generator" settings. "Pencil" icon.)
You have all these things. Each track has a fader (volume control), and at the bottom right of the window is the Master Fader (volume Control). Select a track and open Track Info ("i"nfo) icon), click details, and the pencil icon to the right of the Generator PopUp menu.
preferences, it does not show that USB port as a line
    in......
Because it is NOT a line in. MIDI ≠ Audio.
just internal mic and audio line in
    As it should be.
I don't understand why, when going to the audio
settings........both on Mac audio preferences and
GarageBand..........it doesn't show that USB as an
    audio line in.
    Because MIDI ≠ Audio
Also tried with Sound Studio...........a music
recording application that came with my iMac when I
purchased it a couple of years ago. It has worked
with the Mac's audio line in and with the internal
mic.........but doesn't pick up anything from the
    keyboard via USB cable in.
Because there is no Audio to pick up. MIDI ≠ Audio.
Could the length of my USB cable have anything to do
with this? I am using a 15-ft. USB 2.0 cable.
    No.

  • Using Band-in-a-Box with GarageBand

Does anyone out there use Band-in-a-Box with GarageBand?
If so, I would have several questions. BinB is a great program ... particularly for setting up chord progressions. And, completely compatible with G/B.
    Used it many times w G/B 2. But running into a few difficulties w G/B '09 (or, 5), whatever.
    Thanks.

What's the difficulties? Creating a midi file in BiaB and dropping it into GB should work fine!

  • Looking for a starter keyboard recommendation for use with Garageband

I've got a new iMac running Lion.  I'm looking for a keyboard that will work with Garageband that I can buy for as little as possible but will work and be decent.  Looking at the Apple Store, I see three that could fit in my price range, the M-Audio Keystation Mini 32, the M-Audio Key Studio 49 USB-Midi, and the Akai Professional LPK25 Laptop. I'd appreciate any feedback about these.

    Good, good, and good!
M-Audio in particular makes great "bang for the buck" controllers.
If you spend more, you get a better physical keyboard, which can be more satisfying to play. But for budget models, hard to beat those, particularly the m-audio.
good site to check gear out:
