Midori: increase in startup time [SOLVED]
Just done a fresh install and early on was amazed at start up time [almost instant] of Midori
Now, after intalling a bunch of other stuff - there is a really notable delay in start time.
Is there any way to figure out what would cause this?
Last edited by cpcnw2 (2014-03-11 14:01:25)
Google startpage as before
No extensions or anything added
Not doing anything else at all - testing from a fresh boot
Since adding Midori have added Sylpheed / Gnome-icons / MC / XFE / Xterm
Its the startup time thats delayed ie from clicking menu item to full load on
screen. As I said early in teh install it was super fast [loading from SSD]
Now there is this lag - how to track?
Edit: Just noticed that if I startup with '--plain' switch its back to being instant again.
Wonder if its anything to do with the Gnome Icons / GTK stuff?

Macbook Pro (Mid 2012) Startup Time Increased
Hi everyone,
I have a Macbook Pro (Mid 2012) non-retina model. I have an upgraded SSD (Crucial MX100). The startup time from switching on to the login screen is usually around five seconds but since this morning the time has increased to around 40 seconds. When the power button is pressed, the tone sounds and the screen lights up but it takes quite a while for the apple logo to appear. I haven't added or removed anything or changed any settings since before this happened. There doesn't seem to be any changes to the performance of the computer once it has started up, or the time taken from the password entered for the bar to load (Yosemite).
My hard drive cable once broke and I had it replaced at an Apple store (if that means anything to anyone). If anyone could give me any possible explanations or advise on how I can return the boot up time to the normal time.
Thanks,
BenSelect Macintosh HD as the Startup Disk.

Startup time increases after installition of mountain lion.
after installition of mauntain lion, startup time increases . is it necessary to first format our hdd before installition of mountain lion
I don't reboot much, but when I reboot my Mountain Lion MacBook Pro (Late 2008) it takes much longer to boot. Shutdown seems to take forever to get to the Boot beep, then after the system gives me the apple screen it takes a longer time to get to the logon screen.
The systems is otherwise quite stable, but this oddity is bugging me.
I did a clean install (and format) of the system, so it's not crud left over from Snow Leopard.
I did a Verbose boot, and on shutdown it seems to have problems quitting some componets and unmouting the disk (I did not write down who he culpuits were- is it logged on my HD somewhere?). -
Hello
I've installed Oracle 11g on my Win 7 64-bit OS, and I've noticed that after installing Oracle, a lot of items have been added to my startup and the resultant startup time has drastically increased.
Is this common ?
And if I uninstall Oracle, will the added components also get removed and my startup time return to the way it was ?
Thank you for looking!I did mention I am using Windows 7.
I don't know how to check if it's R1 or R2.
Anyway, I think my problem is regardless.
And by 'components', even I don't know what they are exactly. The thing is, programs like 'System' and 'WinCommand' used to take about 30 seconds collectively to start, but after installing oracle, the time has increased to 85. I can only assume installing Oracle added more things that get loaded when such programs load during startup.
P.S. : If you're wondering how I know the exact times, then I'm using this program called Soluto

Hi Experts!!
My macbook pro startup time is now 25 to 35 sec and yesterday it was 15 sec. I know its not a drastic change but still i would like to bring it back to 15 sec!!

ThanksThanks for the update.
Upgraded to 10.6.8 combo and still KCG errors exist.
Also i can now see new error after upgrade as below:

Report RPTARQPOST keeps increasing in the time it takes to run
Hi
Since we have implemented Leave Requestes using ESS/MSS this report has increased from taking 300 seconds to run to taking 1000 seconds currently. I need advices as to what can be causing this report to increase its running time?
Any advice will be appreciated. System : ECC6 SP Stack 19
Regards
Duvanread the note 1460527
check teh size of PTREQ_HEADER and ensure its not getting large
The status ERROR is assigned to a request if it cannot be posted in a
run of the report RPTARQPOST. There are three main reasons for this:
1: The personnel number is locked.
2: There is a collision.
3: The quota is insufficient.
The first reason does not constitute a problem because the request is
posted in the next run in this case.
The two other reasons must be resolved by an administrator. However,
these situations can only occur if an absence is entered using a
different procedure after the creation of the request.
If these requests in the status ERROR or the collision reason are not
removed, the report RPTARQPOST tries to post these requests in each run,
but this is unsuccessful. The performance deteriorates as a result.
You can use two indicators in the report RPTARPOST to solve this
problem:
The "Post with Infotype Match" option ensures that leave requests that
have already been created as absences are automatically marked as
posted. This is useful if absences are sometimes manually entered in
parallel in spite of the automatic posting. In this case, the system
does not recognize the collision and posts the request.
The "Ignore for Posting" option ensures that all ERROR requests are
ignored. You can use this workaround at the start, but all ERROR
requests are retained, even the requests from point 1 that would be
normally posted otherwise.
Page 2
For a final solution, an analysis as to why so many ERROR requests are
created in the system must be performed because, usually, only a few
ERROR requests should be created as a result of the manual entry of
absences. -
How to fix slow startup times on a macbook air
Before upgrading to Moutain Lion my MacBook Air booted up to the desktop in less than 30 seconds. Now with Mountain Lion it takes 1 minute and 30 seconds to get to the desktop. What can I do to get the startup time back to the way it was before upgrading?
I had already checked and tried numerous "google" searches without any successbefore coming here. If you can't give a response without being sarcastic then don't bother replying.
Wow! Are you thin-skinned. My comment wasn't, as you say, sarcastic. I never assume anything not explicitly stated or implied. If you've visited these forums for any length of time, you'd know how many don't do the obvious things, but expect responders to be clairvoyant. If none of those hits solved your issue, I'm out of ideas, since the global and app-specific defaults changes work here. Good luck and have a happy holiday weekend (US-only). -
Please keep working on startup time & footprint!
Hello!
Hoping that some sun-devs read this - please keep working on both startup-time and memory-footprint of both - java-standalone and plugin.
It is still hard for many java-developers when customers ask them why a particular application starts so slow or why it does eat up 30mb if its just a small tool.
If I have a look at the memory-useage of a simple swing application running on 1.5 with class-sharing disables - java eats up more memory than OpenOffice-2.0-Writer compiled with debugging information!
I know the sun is working on this since a long time - the problem is just I do not see much progress.
a.) With each new release footprint increases.
b.) Startup-time was according to sun from 1.2->1.3 about 25% faster, from 1.3->1.4 about 20% faster and from 1.4->1.5 also 20% faster(because of CDS) for typical swing apps.
Well, that means 1.5 should start up in about 55% of the time 1.2.2 would need - a bad joke :-(
Especially the first startup is horrible, when all the java-dlls aren't cached - even on fast PCs. Thats still a quite ugly problem.
lg Clemensthis is also a fact why .NET SEEMS faster for client-use.
simply because it starts up in about 1/2 of the time java needs... -

Hi
What would you say is a normal startup time for the built in ipod app? Mine take 8 seconds to start if it isn't present in memory.Yesterday, some podcast appeared in my playlist which I had deleted a long time ago. We're talking weeks here.
It was podcasts I had downloaded to the phone through wifi, and never synced to itunes.
I'm starting to suspect that there may be references to podcasts which no longer exists, or do exist but that the ipod app for some reason can't access them. I believe that the ipod app halts for 20 seconds because it's trying to locate/read these files but can't access them for some reason, then it times out.
I'm going to do a complete delete of all the contents on the phone this evening, the delete process which the phone states may take up to 2 hours, and then resync the phone and see if that solves the problem. -
Safari 3.1.1 Extremely slow startup times (Suddenly)
Hi I'm running a Macbook with a 2.4 GHz Processor, (Intel Core 2 Duo), 4 Gigs of ram and Mac OSX Leopard 10.5.3.
this mac is about 2 months old and suddenly am having extremely slow startup times with Safari. The rest of the computer is very fast, this problem is only with safari... It used to open with about 2 or 3 bounces on the dock... now suddenly its around 15-20 bounces before it opens. It bounces this many times, and then I receive the beach ball for a few seconds. I am assuming it is probably a build up of some files, or tasks it runs through to open... It is worst when you open it for the first time after powering on the mac, after you open it, and close it it opens up a bit faster.
I have tried the basics, i.e. resetting safari and things like that.
Most of the suggestions for deleting files out of the User>Library> are for older OS's and do not apply to Leopard...
Any suggestions?Navigate to this location: Macintosh HD/Users/YOURUSERNAME/Library/Preferences and delete the following files:
com.apple.safari.plist
com.apple.safari.RSS.plist
Do this with Safari NOT running. See if that solves the problem. -
Problems with Bluetooth Status and Startup Times.
For the past little while my MacBook Pro has had slow startup times and the Bluetooth status icon in the Finder does not appear when I first start up the machine.
The Bluetooth status problem has only started in the last week or so. In order for me to get it to display again I have to open up System Preferences, go to Bluetooth, uncheck "Show Bluetooth status in the menu bar" and then recheck it again and it will appear. Occasionally, it will show up on startup but to the right side of the clock when it normally appears far off on the left side.
As for startup times, this has been only recent as well. I upgraded to 2 Gb of RAM a few months back and everything was fine, now within the past few weeks it has been starting up much slower than it would.
These may not be issues that can be solved. I am debating whether or not I want to re-install Mac OS X or tough it out until Leopard comes along.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Thank you,
AaronInitially I thouhgt this problem with playback of music had something to do with bluetooth but I'm not so sure anymore.
The problems with music apps stop working correctly after connecting or disconnecting a bluetooth headset led me to beleive that it was a purely blutooth related problem. Now I think that this might have something to do with an incorrectly configured audio device.
The various symptoms so far that can be replicated
Frequent drop outs (short breaks of silence) in playback of music when using a blutooth headset, at least once per musical track
Frequent short moments of stuttering in music playback when not using a bluetooth headset
Drop outs/stuttering is more frequent when display is turned off
Music player freeze if bluetooth is turned on during playback, tapping play/pause doesn't work
Music player freeze if playback is turned off during playback, tapping play/pause doesn't work
If you use the playback buttons on the bluetooth headset immediately after connecting the bluetooth headset during playback with the standard music player you will get a message on the x10 display giving you the option to "force a shutdown" of the player
Ringsignals are stuttering and double speed when using a bluetooth headset
Sounds recorded at a sample rate of 11 kHz on the x10 (for instance using an app like fourtracks) will playback at double speed -
Slow system and application startup times
Hi,
I've got a 17" Macook Pro (Early 2011) 2.2 GHz Intel Core i7 - ever since I bought it I feel like it runs a little slow.
I've been a long-time mac used but I feel a little disappointed with this machine.
e.g.: Startup time takes around 4 minutes.
Applications take around 10 seconds to start.
Chrome sometimes takes 5-10 seconds to start, about the same to quit.
My Xbench scores fluctuate wildly - best I've ever got is 220, worst is 18. 160 is about the average.
http://db.xbench.com/merge.xhtml?doc2=526647
http://db.xbench.com/merge.xhtml?doc2=537725
http://db.xbench.com/merge.xhtml?doc2=544252
I feel that tried everything including:
- Creating a new user
- Repairing disk permissions
- DIsk verify and repair
- Removing all startup items
- Installing extra ram (currently at 8GB)
It runs well most of the time but frustratingly slow sometimes and there doesn't seem to be any anomalous activity in activity monitor. I feel that it could be the hard disk, but don't know (I always have 250-350gb free).
Any help appreciated! Thanks for the link. I've never seen that page before but I have done everything in that list.
It's not a spinning beachball issue - the system doesn't lock-up often it just takes a **** long time to do some things. I didn't really realise it as a problem until I started using other people's older/lower spec'ed macs and noticed that they run FASTER than mine.
Activity monitor pics - just after a restart with my usual apps running:
CPU https://skitch.com/e-hellodaniel/83pq5/activity-monitor
Memory https://skitch.com/e-hellodaniel/83pq7/activity-monitor
Disk https://skitch.com/e-hellodaniel/83pxg/activity-monitor
Even using Skitch to take those screenshots took ages.
It's almost like the disk or CPU is throttled back or bottlenecked, and always has been... -

Looking at the times, I see this only takes a fraction of a second but my startup time is still much much longer than it ever was or should.
Does anyone have any idea on how to get rid of this? I deleted the Captive Network Assistant.app from my computer but the checking continues. It seems to be a rarely mentioned issue doing a web search, and nothing like this, although it's referred to in certain articles.
Really weird.
GreggI'd take another look at your startup log.
If you look closely, you'll see that all those log messages occurred in the space of 30 milliseconds - by comparison, a human blink takes about 150 milliseconds.
So while I don't doubt you're seeing slow startup time, I don't think CaptiveNetworkSupport is the culprit, per se.
Fortunately, since every startup event is timestamped, it should be easy enough to determine what task is taking the most time.
As for CNS, it's not just an iOS thing - it's standard in Mac OS X, too. I'm also under the impression (but can't confirm) that it only checks the networks that you've previously connected to, so check System Preferences -> Network -> AirPort -> Advanced -> WiFi and delete any networks you no longer use or expect to connect to.
