MiFi vs Jetpack?

<Post branched to a new discussion to better fit the topic.>
What is the difference?
Hi Contributors
I have a Mifi hotspot and a newer Jetpack 890.
I can use both with no distinct difference in use with the exception of one.
I play scrabble on my iPod and can do so with no problem when using the MiFi
hotspot. When I switch to the Jet Pack I cannot play scrabble on the iPod. WHAT
is the difference???

MiFi is a trademarked name for Novatel Mobile Hotspot devices.  Jetpack is a name from Verzion used to sumarize thier Mobile Hotspot devices.  All MiFi's are considered Jetpacks, but not all Jetpacks are MiFi's.
Naming aside the MiFi (4510L, 4620L, 5510L) is essentially the same device as the Jetpack 890L at its core.  There are a few features and limitations to each device but in general they all connect your WiFi devices to the Verizon wireless network to access the internet.
You might need to be a little more specific if you want to know exactly what the differences are between them.  For example, can you able to connect to the Jetpack at all with your iPod or is it just the scrabble site/app that does not work.  If you cannot connect then your iPod most likely has a password mismatch or is connecting over a technology that is not supported or configured correctly.  If you can connect the iPod to the Jetpack and other sites work but the srabble site/app does not work then there may be something else going on.
Please try to collect and post some more information on the problem for us so we can narrow it down.

  • MiFi 2640L Jetpack 108D.. Won't Connect

I have been using my new MiFi 2640 for roughly 3 months and when I woke up this morning I turned the device on and walked off to the computer. I tried connecting and nothing, it didn't show the network at all. I went back to the device and noticed it was stuck on the "MiFi" screen. I tried turning it off and it wouldn't even power down. I do not want to pull the battery to get it to reset so any advice would be appreciated.
My wife is a University of Pheonix student so its crucial we get this resolved ASAP, again any help will be appreciated.
    Thanks,
    -Mark

Gadzooks MarkLH! I do hope you were able to get your MiFi up and running by now. I'm assuming you actually meant the MiFi 4620L Jetpack is the culprit causing the trouble, since we don't have a model 2640L. A battery pull is actually a good thing to do every once in a while to refresh the device's connection to the network. It's not going to actually reset any passwords of usernames for your Jetpack. If it's stuck at any point or won't power down using the buttons, that's the best thing to try first. If you don't feel comfortable pulling the battery, there's also a way to restart the device through your administration page. Here's more details if you'd like to check it out: http://bit.ly/SZEHHz.
Keep me posted if the restart didn't do the trick and let me know if you're seeing any error messages too.

  • Pairing iPhone to MIFI 4620L Jetpack

I'm doing something wrong so hopefully someone can help me.  While buying the Jetpack, the employee paired my iPhone to the Jetpack.  It works fine.  My wife's iPhone is not pairing or connecting.  Can someone help me figure out what I'm doing wrong?  Her WIFI setting on the iPhone is set to connect to the Jetpack; it just is not pairing or something.  Thanks for any help.
    Steve

    Steve,
If I had to guess I would assume that your wife's iPhone has the incorrect password information stored for the MiFi.  You are going to have to try to re-enter that information on the iPhone to correct the problem.  I do not have access to an iPhone so I wont be able to provide you with the specific steps to accomplish that goal.  A quick google search or a call to apple may be the best course of action there.
What I can help you with is looking up your password credentials and configuration information.  Once you know that setting up a connection on your wifes device should be much easier.
To look up password info on the MiFi 4620L:
    1. Power up and connect to the MiFi on a regular computer
    2. Navigate to http://vz.hotspot
    3. Log into the MiFi with your admin password (default is posted to the back of the device)
    4. Navigate to WiFi > WiFi Profile
    5. Record the following information
      a. Network Name (SSID)
      b. Security
      c. WiFi Password
Once you have this info then try to re-enter it on the other iPhone.  Perhaps something was entered incorrectly the first time around.  The stats above should contain all the info that you need to create a good connection.
If these steps do not help the next thing to try would be switching the 802.11 mode.  I believe the default is B+G, so try bumping it up to B+G+N.  You can also try ruling out WiFi passwords all togeather by switching the selected profile type from secured to Open.  I do not recommend leaving your MiFi as an open connection, but sometimes it's helpful for troubleshooting purposes to know if the devices are incompatible or not.

  • HELP! MiFi or JetPack

I currently have a hotspot on my iphone, thats what I use for my internet on my mac desktop and my windows lap top. I want to change  to either a Jetpack or a MiFi. The only problem I have is that I live out in the country, not to far out but still out here. My question is what do you guys recommend? I have read both the pros and cons on both devises. My hotspot on my phone is just to slow i want something better. Thx.

    External antenna.
I live in the boondocks of Weston, Colorado 81091 six months a year and from June 2010 to June 2012 I got perfect reception with a USB 760 and external antenna that showed -66 dBM.  I live high atop a mesa with great panoramas.  I can see an AT&T cell tower from my property.
Almost exactly two years to the date my reception becomes dial-up speed. Can't watch a video, can't run Live Update for Norton Anti-Virus, can only do plain jane email stuff. I've called in at least six or seven times and reception would improve after a trouble ticket was filed, but then a week later it would go back to the slow dial-up speeds.  Last time I called in the tech service people whined about me calling in so much.  Others told me my device was two years old and needed to be replaced.
So last week I upgraded to a MiFi4620L Jetpack f3f9.  Did not improve my performance, in fact it is worse. So I called in again and still same old marginal area speak from Tech Service.  Well, I still register four bars and my -66 dBm still registers.
I am not happy with Verizon Wireless Broadband and tech service.  I suspect a cell tower problem or my access speed has been slowed by Verizon. My speed has been greatly throttled back and I only use less than 5GB a month. My plan is not unlimited.
Why would it work perfectly for two years and then all of a sudden doesn’t work perfect, even with the latest technology and my upgrade to a Jetpack? This is a VERY sparsely populated area. So I know the bandwidth is not being over burdened.
Very confused.  Please fix my problem.  Add a cell tower to this area. Or please put me out of my misery and cancel my service with NO termination fee. Please.

  • MiFi 5510L JetPack several issues

    1. Lock Up
We have now observed 3 lockups:
    a. In 2 instances the MiFi 5510 would shutoff and not turn back on after months of being used just fine.  In one instance, the hotspot locked up right in the middle of testing by reading webpages with an IPad.  Removing the battery and putting it back in resolved the issue in both cases.  The problem is that the user does not have the ability to remove the battery.
    b. New instance where the hotspot locks up and stays powered on at the Verizon logo screen.  In this case, the button is unresponsive and removing the battery and putting the battery back in does not resolve the issue.  Removing the battery just shuts off the hotspot.  Pushing the internal reset button does nothing as well.  When you push the button to turn the hotspot back on, the hotspot displays the MiFi screen and then switches back to and stays on the Verizon logo screen and is again unresponsive.  The SIM card and MEID numbers are  89148000000747438449 and 990003303118760.
    2. Text Messages This is the problem. We continually get random text messages with odd characters that make no sense, also,  it looks like a device was shut off for lack of payment.
    3. Firmware Update  There are only 2 choices for performing a firmware update: immediately or deferred.  Even though our users do not have access to the hotspot, it looks like the hotspot will automatically select deferred and will eventually automatically update the firmware on its own.  Once the firmware is updated, the hotspot will no longer turn on automatically.
    4. Charging State There have been about a dozen instances where the hotspot gets into and stays in a charging state.  The hotspot screen displays an icon of a  battery charging and does not broadcast its Wi-Fi id while in this state.  We have found a workaround by unplugging the hotspot USB and plugging the USB back in after 10 seconds resets the hotspot and it starts transmitting its Wi-Fi id and works fine.  Although there is a workaround and we no longer need to have the customer return these hotspots, it is sill inconvenient for the customer to do this. Issues with the hotspots are the number 1 problem with the Linkview product. A total of 65+ hotspots have had to be replaced with customers.  It is very frustrating when the hotspot stops working abruptly after working fine for several weeks.

We are a software health company that sends out these JetPacks to our patients/customers. They are the "users".  The users are returning these JetPacks to us for the reasons I mentioned in the original email. The JetPacks seem to work fine for weeks or a couple months and then they are failing. A return to the manufacturer is not an option as this product has been touted and released by our sales and engineering team, so to go back on that and switch to a completely different JetPack would be impossible. There would need to be mounds of paperwork completed, quality assessments, internal testing and an entire release session again, that's not viable for us. Any other things I can try or look for to figure this out will be most helpful. I'm at my wits end here. All the JetPacks have the latest updates/firmware/software.

  • Need help with MiFi 5510L JetPack

This keeps randomly resetting and shutting off without warning. I've tried moving it to another building, turning it off and back on, I can't figure out the pattern here. Is this happening to anyone else and what did you do? Thanks.

        Barely71,
Oh gosh! We need to make sure that you have a working device. I see you posted in a few other threads and John_Getzke has suggested a few things. I would like to add on to what he had to say and continue trouble shooting.
I am definitely thinking John's theory may prove correct so we need to do a few things to test it out. You can find the most recent software version by following these steps:
    1. press the select button on the Home screen to display the Menu screen.
    2. Using the navigation button, scroll to the Software Update icon and press the select button to open the Software Update screen and display the current software version.
If you want to check for a new software update:
    1. Use the left navigation button to highlight Check Now, then press the select button to check for a new update.
    2. Select OK to return to the Menu screen
Please let us know if you are running the most recent software on the device.

  • Mifi 890L NIGHTMARE

Posted here just a few minutes ago and I even had friends look at the post. Then suddenly the post disappeared and no traces of it could be found, even the bookmark I made of it has disappeared. Might there be a mod trying to censor what the customers have to say about their service provider? https://community.verizonwireless.com/thread/781785 was the link to my post. Someone care to explain what happened to it? Anyways I'll try to repost it though it won't be exactly the same. This time I'll save a copy and keep reposting until whomever deleted it gets tired or bans me. I had a Mifi 2200 for about 2 years and it worked OK. The charger port broke on that one and we were forced to get an upgrade to the Mifi 890L "JetPack." Worst thing I could have done apparently. This new device has been nothing but trouble since day 1. It struggles to get 2-3 bars when the 2200 got 3-4 bars consistently, I don't see how a device that sits in the same spot and never moves can fluctuate in signal strength so much. Frequently it goes to 1x and even roaming and sometimes it spikes and goes up to 4 and 5 bars of 3G signal but when it does that the device is unusable and I always get disconnected from whatever I'm doing. I get disconnected from chat, VoIP, online games and downloads no less than 10-20 times a day. How can verizon charge premium broadband prices for such an unreliable service? Frequently when it disconnects I have to manually connect it to the verizon network from the configuration page or it will just sit there in a "disconnected" state. The modem restarts itself whenever it feels like it, which is quite often. It has the latest firmware, I've gotten a replacement device and even a replacement SIM card that isn't the right size for the slot but it still "works" if you can call it that. Even the wifi the device puts out is sub-par, I'm only getting 2-3 bars of wifi signal from the device and it's sitting less than 8 feet from my computer in the same room. Verizon reps have told me that I'm stuck with this device even though I know there are other mifi models available because I saw one in the verizon store. It looks like a 2200 with a few more buttons on the front, so I don't understand why I'm being forced to use a clearly flawed model. I've also had quite a few reps tell me that it's safe to leave the device plugged into the charger but I've read quite a few user posts that say otherwise so which is it? I'm at the end of my rope with this "service" that I spend more time screaming at the modem than getting any use out of it. I'm about 1 more call to customer "service" away from telling everyone I know and even random people I meet in public that verizon is a sorry excuse for a phone and internet service provider and they DO NOT care about their customers. I guess they just know that if you're desperate enough to pay high dollar for limited access to an unreliable service, that you have no other options so they stick it to you hard as they can and care not if it works like it's supposed to. I'm furious!!!
This is the THIRD time I'm posting this, the last time it stayed up for about 20 minutes before someone removed it without sending me a message as to why, I'm just going to keep posting. Either tell me what part of my post breaks the rules or let it be. I've posted no personal threats, no personal information, no offensive or derogatory language. All I've done is describe the terrible service I've been given. Just to keep record the link to the last post that was deleted is: https://community.verizonwireless.com/thread/781786 and when you go there it only states "Access to this place or content is restricted. If you think this is a mistake, please contact your administrator or the person who directed you here." I'd like a moderator to speak up and stop cowardly deleting my posts.
Fourth time now, I can do this all day and since no one is contacting me to let me know if I'm breaking any rules then I must not be breaking any.  URL for my third post is https://community.verizonwireless.com/thread/781787 and I am taking screen shots now for proof.

Sounds like a loose USB port on the Jetpack.  Only way to repair that (without voiding your warranty) is to contact VZW and have them send you a replacement under the warranty.  USB ports are normally very quick and easy to troubleshoot with VZW reps.  They will get you a replacement without much effort as long as you are covered.  If not then they will review your options for purchasing a replacement or upgrading your device.

  • MiFi 5510L stops connecting suddenly

    Hi,
I've had a MiFi 5510L Jetpack for a few months. It worked great for the first couple of months. However, in more recent weeks, it stops working suddenly, sometimes several times a day. When it stops working, our (my housemate and I) browsers cannot open any website (DNS error). However, the device shows connectivity (at least 1 bar, and 4G) when this happens. The issue happens more often when both of us are connected to the MiFi. There are no new software updates (I check frequently). The only thing that clears the problem is by turning the MiFi off and turning it back on again (sometimes removing the battery and putting it back in is necessary). Resetting also clears it, but the issue always comes back. It is quite disturbing - over the last weekend, I had to restart the MiFi at least 10 times. Sometimes the display on the MiFi looks strange, too (letters/graphics run off the screen, etc.) but that's not a huge concern. Is there anything I can do to try to rectify this issue? Thank you.

The symptoms you are describing here are common for all mobile hotspot devices, the new MiFi 5510L is no exception.  Chances are good that your problem is a VZW network disconnection issue, not something with the devices local WiFi network.
To resolve this problem you are going to have to play around with your environment and see if you can improve the quality of the signal that your MiFi is receiving.  Try performing a Site Survey and plot out the good and bad areas of your house for storing the MiFi.  Take it out on the road and see if connecting in different areas is any different than the normal environment, preferably under different towers
You can also experiment with Antenna's and Amplifiers if you know anyone with that equipment.  Otherwise depending on your budget you can do some research and purchase one to test it out.  If the equipment doesn't help then return it for a refund and try something else.
More info on performing a Site Survey:
    http://3gstore.com/page/13_will_an_antenna_help_me.html
Until your signal quality improves your MiFi is likely to continue to drop on you as various events occur.  You can try to post the diagnostic log for us too.  Perhaps we can confirm the kinds of disconnections and give you some other tips and tricks.

  • Why is my iPod Touch so slow on Verizon midi 4620L?

I just got a Verizon mifi 4620L Jetpack hotspot thingy.
I connect my MacBook Pro to it and get 17mbps or so download speeds, 3mbps or so going up.
I connect my 3rd gen iPad to it and get about the same.
But when I connect my 5th gen iPod Touch to it I rarely get download speed peaks higher than 2mbps and most of the time the avg comes out to be less than 1mbps according to the Speedtest.net app on the iOS devices.
So, the iPad and MacBook Pro both work properly on the Verizon mifi hotspot and the iPod Touch doesn't. On all other networks I've tried the iPod Touch can support download speeds up to about 25mbps maybe even more. All these devices currently perform the same at home on the Comcast fed wifi network: very fast download speeds on them all with modest upload speeds. So I know there's nothing wrong with the iPod's wifi radios. There's just something quirky going on in how the iPod Touch and the Verizon mifi thing talk to one another because another thing that's strange: the iPod will download around 1mbps but then go up at about 10-12mbps. The exact opposite of what I would like except for those rare times I would actally like to send out a lot of photos quickly.
Does anyone know what might cause this?
Also, when I look at the connected devices as an admin the iPad's device name is recognized and listed but the iPod Touch remains named Unknown. Does this matter?
I'm frustrated because the iPod Touch is what I would most like to use with the mifi!
Any body come across this situation?

Does the iPod connect to other networks OK?
    Try:
    - Reset the iOS device. Nothing will be lost
Reset iOS device: Hold down the On/Off button and the Home button at the same time for at
least ten seconds, until the Apple logo appears.
    - Power off and then back on the jetpack

  • Hot spot to use at home

I have the Share Everything plan for our 4 phones. My phone is the only smartphone and I use it as a mobile hotspot to provide internet at home. We have no other internet options right now. This is great when I'm home but if I have to be gone, there is no internet. Can I use another type of hotspot at home that does not require my phone to be there?

        Hello mustanglady!
The hotspot feature is the best! I use it too! You can purchase a MiFi or Jetpack device that would not require your phone to be present! Here are your options: http://bit.ly/Q6u5uP You can add a MiFi, or Jetpack device for $20 a month and share your data with it.

  • Can send but not receive comcast emails with Verizon MIFI jetpack

I am unable to receive comcast email using outlook 2007 using my new Verizon MIFI4620L Jetpack. When I disconnect from the Jetpack, I am able to receive emails using my neighbor's wireless router. I am able to send email using the MIFI Jetpack. When I test email settings, I am able to connect to comcast and send a test email. I am able to receive the test email from Microsoft. I am able to access email using the internet at comcast.net and I am able to use web browsers using the Mifi device. My other laptop is able to receive and send emails using the MIFI device. I currently have uninstalled Norton Internet Security and disabled windows firewall on the problematic computer in an attempt to resolve this.
    Any ideas?

There seems to be alot of Comcast email issues with the MiFi 4620L.  Most of them have been resolved with the propper configuration.  We have already found a few limitations to certain websites with this device, but none have been confirmed to be related to email services so far.
    Some helpful sites I found:

  • Windows 8 PC can't connect to Verizon Jetpack MiFi 5510L

I have a Verizon Jetpack MiFi 5510L and I am unable to get my Windows 8.1 PC to connect to the Jetpack. My iPhone 5 with iOS 7.0.4 and my Lenovo T400 running Windows 7 Ultimate can both connect to the Jetpack with no issue or changing of settings. The Jetpack's WiFi network is visible to my Windows 8 PC (ASUS V500c), but the Windows 8.1 PC cannot connect to it. The Windows 8.1 PC connects to my home wireless network and wireless hotspots in multiple locations just fine. Any help would be appreciated.

I tried everything in the posts, several times, without success, since I'm not sure what parameters to provide. For example, set profileparameter name=<name> authentication=wpa encryption=tkip authMode=userOnly returns an error message The oneX setting in the profile <profile> on interface "Wi-Fi" is not enabled. I've fiddled with a few settings, but nothing that seems to work.
A coherent, step by step, solution would be nice.

I upgraded my MIFI 2200 (had no contract on it) to a Jetpack (with a contract) when customer service told me this 4G device would use less data because it was faster.  This was not correct.  Anyway, I got the device, had problems, did tech support, re-activated my MIFI.  1.  Decided to return the device. Spent hours with Customer Service, then finally up to Management, they agreed to take it back and void the contact, I sent it back immediately – and instead of voiding the contact they transferred it to my MIFI! Please cancel the contract on the MIFI. 2.  During the short time I had the Jetpack I continually received overage alerts, took it all the way up to 30 GB, each time I backdated the new data plan except twice when customer service did and failed to back date the increase, and once the computer locked customer service out and could not increase.  The end result is I have a $495 bill, many of these alerts were false since I ended up with only 14 MG for the month, etc.  I am asking that my bill be reduced significantly to reflect no overage and to compensate for these problems. Please open up a ticket for this.

I had Verizon JetPak and you will find it will eat data like crazy. I opted to sign on to ATT Uverse and configured my phones and other devices to the WiFi on the Uverse system. It took about 5 minutes to completed the configuration.  I was using 10 to 12 GB monthly to support 5 devices. Even if you use Verizon DSL, you are still subjected to same GB allotment.  In my area, Verizon DSL is not available. With Uverse, I have 250 GB monthly to use, and I have not even come close to using anything of that magnitude. I reduced my GB package with Verizon to 2 GB per month and since having ATT Uverse, I never use more than 1GB a month with Verizon.
I have no problem with Verizon cell phone service as we get a much stronger signal where we live than you can with ATT or any others.  It is just my opinion, but if you are running multiple devices off Verizon Jetpak, you will eventually spend a fortune to keep pace.  I pay $60 a month for 18 Mbps speed, although ATT have packages that cost much less. But, it saves me a bundle each month. The cost of Uverse alone is worth not having to run everything through a Jetpak.
If you have the  option to use another DSL service provider in your area, I recommend dumping the Jetpak and sign on with another carrier.
