Miggui : Expand NetWare Volume fails

Hi,
When I use miggui it fails to expand the NetWare NSS source volume when doing "Configure File System". The volumes are listed on the "Volume Information" tab however they do not expand. This issue does not always happen but it does happen more often than not. I've tested with different source servers and run into the same issue. I have also tested miggui on a different target server and it does not happen on the alternate target server. This leads me to think it is likely a problem with the specific target server. Has anyone else run into this issue? Or do you have any idea how I could troubleshoot this - increasing logging levels etc.
The source servers are running NetWare 6.5 sp8 and the latest nss and tsa patch sets.
The target servers are running OES/Linux 11 sp2.
Cheers,
Ron

Good to hear you got that sorted Ron!
Also, thanks for feeding that info back info the thread. It might well be a fix included in the latest versions you patched the OES11 system to.

  • A volume failed to mount/Operation cannot be completed

We bought a MacBook on the weekend. Our Apple concierge insisted that we can keep our music, videos and photos on our Windows XP desktop and "share" the files on the Mac--in other words, we can pull down what we need to edit or save on the Mac as need be.
We've set up the shared directories on the Windows machine, renamed the Workgroup to match the Mac and disabled the firewall. We've "connected to server" using Finder and can see the two shared directories we've set up.
But when I click on either one of them, I get an error message: "A volume failed to mount. The volume "Mac" could not be mounted."
After some time of being on the network, I see a Shared directory in Finder with my PC. If I click on the icon, the title bar says: "Connected as: Guest". The window displays the same two directories as above but when I click on one or the other I get an error message: "The operation cannot be completed because the original item for "Mac" cannot be found."
I've called Apple technical support and the agent's response was: I don't think you can do that. Just copy your files to the Mac using DVDs.
Any ideas? We don't want to have to transfer a lifetime of photos, video and music to our laptop--we want to use the XP desktop as our hub.

I'm having the same trouble. From an Intel Mac Mini running 10.5.3 I've been able to access smb shares fine on an old PC running XP pro. These are shared volumes on external drives on the PC. I can still access them fine from an old PowerBook G4 running 10.5.3, but while I can see computers on the network, if I try to connect to a share on the computer I get the message "the operation cannot be completed because the original item for <share name> cannot be found". If I try to mount it via a shortcut, I get the message "A volume failed to mount. The volume <share name> could not be mounted.
In the console, I'm seeing things like:
6/2/08 10:45:01 PM com.apple.coreservicesd[58] NOTE: Using non-mach-based version of client -> server communication, via direct function calls.
but I don't know if that has anything to do with this or not.
Has anyone heard of a fix for this?
    Thanks,
    Mark

  • RAID 0 volume failed - Intel RST, W530 (wonder if it is hardware issue now)

    Hi,
My laptop is about two years old. I got one of two intel RAID 0 volumes failed several months after I got this laptop. This problem has been on my laptop for a long time.
The functionality of my laptop started to become poor after this volume failed. In the beginning, windows explorer stopped working and restarted every time I opened the laptop. The windows repair tool said windows could not be repaired... So I reinstalled the OS and reset it to factory setting. However, the crashes persisted and gradually became more frequent. Many other error reports showed up. After searching for solutions, I finally did a clean windows install and used the BIOS Intel RST to repair the corrupted volume (I deleted old volumes created new ones).
Unfortunately, now, the same volume fail error appears again and the functionality of my laptop is impacted. Sometime I cannot save my excel or pdf file because program stop working, or cannot open a pdf file. I have to restart the OS.
The detail error message of Intel RST is: "your volume appears inaccessible. Try fixing any problems reported on the array disks. If this fails, review the Troubleshooting section under Help for more information. In all cases, back up any accessible data before taking action".
I'm now wondering if it is the hardware issue. If so, I'm thinking about buying an extended warranty because my orignal warranty has expired. However, I'm not sure if the warranty can cover this...
In this community, I find there are two types of extended warranty, one will start from the expiring date of the original one and the other will start from the date of purchase. I suppose I need to find the second one.
I'm also wondering the quality of the warranty. Will it take a long time to repair if I send it? or will it take a long time for them to ship?
Any idea, solution and experience in warranty / repairment would be appreciated.
    Best Regards,
    Haoyi
BTW, here is also my experience with Lenovo if you would like to have a look at:
I got my W530 two months after purchases... I found it was a common problem in Lenovo...
When my laptop was still in the original warranty, I contacted the lenovo customer service for repairment of the failed volume. Those people told me it was errors coming from my software. They said the repairment was not covered in the original warranty and I needed to buy a new type of warranty (related to software repairment). I had no confidence in the quality of lenovo's customer serivce... So I did not buy it.

    Hi, Colonel,
Thank you for reply. I tried HD Tune, but it cannot show any information about my harddisk. It only shows Intel Raid 0 Volume, the firemware version is 1.0 and the capacity is 931.5GB. There is no other information, such as serial number, standard, supported, and buffer. I cannot choose supported features. HD Tune also cannot display the temperature of my drives. What should I do?

  • Volume failed

I have a MacBook Air and use an external 500GB hard disk for extra storage.  I plugged the USB cable in and the disk can be read from in "Finder", but the I cannot copy a file to it...I checked the INFO and found out it is now Read Only...I went to the Disk Utility and tried the Verify Disk command...received the following message "Verify Volume Failed: Invalid request".

Not sure what you mean by using plain text. Actually last night I gave up on the ethernet connection. So i plugged the ethernet back into my PC and then all the sudden my PC shows up under Network on my Mac LOL. I have no clue why it worked. So I was transfering files over my wireless network which was painfully slow.. it was like 1MB/sec.. shouldn't it be a lot faster than that? I let it run the transfer over night and woke up this morning and saw that an error occurred.. ugh. Plus my PC disappeared from my Network connections. Now I can't get it to show up again in my Network.. this is just so frustrating. I'm getting that same Volume cannot be mounted error again.

  • Verify volume failed: Invalid request.

    Hi,
I've just installed Bootcamp 4.0 on my MBP, installed Windows 7 - and all was working fine.
In the past 20 minutes I tried to boot into my Bootcamp but it failed and said that it couldn't find the operating system.
I then booted back into Lion and went to disk utilities and now my Bootcamp partition gives me:
    Verify volume failed: Invalid request.
Any ideas what I can do?

You could also download and burn (slowly) Windows 8 ISO.
No I am not a bit-mind-reader but sometimes those Microsoft Windows Patch Tuesday do bite some systems, which is why restore check points, regular maintenance like CCleaner are handy.

  • Time Machine Backup Failed: Error (12): Link of previous volume failed

I am having troubles with Time Machine, backing up to a new Time Capsule, after I have switched one of the drives being backed up. I replaced a 250 GB external drive with a 500 GB drive, but have given it the same name (otherwise lots of links break). Now I get the following error everytime Time Machine runs:
Error (12): Link of previous volume failed for Athena Disk 2
Where 'Athena Disk 2' is an external USB drive being backed up, which was swapped with a new drive.
Disk Utility reports the drive is clean. I've seen a few other references to similar problems in the forum, but no solution. Console reports that the first (internal non-switched) drive has a bunch of files being backed up, but it seems to abort when it tries to backup the drive that was switched.
I've tried disabling backups, removing the Time Capsule disk and then setting it up again, in an attempt to 'reset' something, but to no avail.
Any ideas? I'm guessing there is a filesystem ID or something similar that Time Machine is using, and it notices that something has changed, but doesn't know what to do about it.
    Thanks,
    Dave Filip.

I'm having a similar problem, which seemed to start coincident with either a 10.5.6 update OR the replacement of my internal drive with a larger drive (I don't remember which...).
Time Machine backup logs now start similar to this one:

    a) I don't have fresh backups, and that leaves my system a bit vulnerable. Can I fix this somehow?
    b) I don't want to have to start over, but if I do how can I salvage the existing backups at least for the next year or so?
    c) What the heck are those "CoreEndianFlipData" errors all about?
    Thanks in advance.

  • "Volume Fails To Mount" Error

I have Leopard 10.5.8 and am trying to connect to a Windows Vista share via SMB. The two systems can communicate and authenticate without issue. After using Finder's Go To Server and connecting via SMB, I am prompted for a username and password. Once given, the Vista machine authenticates and presents me with a list of shared folders to chose from. At this point, when I select a folder, Leopard immediately returns with the "Volume Fails To Mount" error and I am returned to the list of shares after closing the dialog box. Thinking it might be an issue with Finder, I found and downloaded an application, AutomountMaker. Its results were the same. I can connect from the Vista machine to Leopard with no issues whatsoever, so I know the machines are working together. I have been unable to find any explanation for this error message nor how to correct the issue. I would appreciate it if anyone can offer some ideas.
As a bit of additional information, I have another machine that is running Windows 7 and I was able to connect to a share on its drive from Leopard without a problem.

  • Machacha, rar expander, unrarX all fail to work?

    Hi-
I got a new hard drive 2 weeks ago and a OS rienstall by Apple, but I cannot seem to do anything with rar files. I cannot unrar a single file or combine parts of rar files.
Machacha, rar expander, unrarX all fail to work?
Machacha- I've downloaded different versions to see what will work, and none work. I get a window showing that the rar files are being converted, then at the end, an icon with zero mb's. I even get a window asking for a password, even if there's no password, but I cannot enter anything at all in the space for the password.
Every single rar expander app, free of course, I could find on the web, I tried and failed with.
The downloading seems OK, I deleted speed download2 in case it was the problem.
Any suggestions will be appreciated, and thanks,
    coup

I hope you don't mind me asking, but why use Windows technology rar?
Last I checked .rar for Mac was in Beta. So, it's probably not going to run on your older version of Mac OS X.
You can use Mac OS X's zip/archive (Windows original too) or convert .dmg's to encrypted disk images if you're concerned about security.
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=152178
You can also use Stuffit Deluxe and make .ZIP, .TAR, or .SITX
    http://www.allume.com/store/index.html
Also, the stuffit expander version you have installed ( If you have it) may be able to open the .rar files. But, you may have to update the version of expander you have installed.
    Hope this helps,
    Michael

  • WD mycloud fehler 004 : Data volume failed to mount

This is "my" solution, may not work for everyone. But it would seem that datablocks would corrupt when power is abruptly cut to the drive. SSH must be enabled for this to work. 1. Log onto the drive, root and welc0me are the default username/password combo.2. Make sure your paritions are intact. # parted -l will tell you this.3. Type # mke2fs -n /dev/sda4. This will get you the filesystem, but more importantly at the end give you the superblock backup locations by block location.4. Pick one, then enter this command. e2fsck -b blocknumber /dev/sda4 It will look for bad blocks and ask for your confirmation to continue/ignore then write over any corrupted ones. Yes to ignore, yes to rewrite. It will do up to five passes of diagnostics, prompting if it finds anything out of the ordinary such as file countes and errant inodes. I answered yes to everything. When it is complete it will either report "Killed" or a summary. Type # reboot and let the drive rebuild its library. 30-ish minutes later (depending on how much data you had on it) you should have access to your files.

  • Mount_nfs Netware Volume

Is there a way to mount a Netware Volume using mount_nfs, if the Netware volume doesn't have Native File Access turned on?
If the answer is yes, could you please give an example of the full command I should use? Thanks!!

    Hi Randy,
The answer to your question depends on how the Netware volume is shared. If it is shared via NFS then yes, I would assume that it could be mounted. If so the command might look something like:
    mount server:/path/to/exported/directory /path/to/mountpoint
You see, if you specify no protocol, the "mount" command will assume that the share is NFS. Classic NFS "uses host-based authentication", which means that generally a random machine cannot mount an NFS share. However, if it's shared to your entire network then the Mac should be able to mount it if it's on the network. If the share is share to your entire network and they have VPN then you should be able to "VPN in" and mount the share.

  • Expand existing Volume

Is there a way to expand an existing volume on a 10.4.6 server?
I have a data volume on an iSCSI SAN (EquilLogic) that is currently formatted at 200 GB. I expanded the volume on the SAN to 400 GB and would like to get the XServer system to recognize the additional 200 GB of free space.
Is there a way to do this without having to reformat the volume?
    Thanks,
    Rick LaPorte

    Three problems with this:
    1. My understanding is that the Apple RAID card doesn't support drives larger than 2.2TB in size.
    2. RAID 5 requires all drives to be the same size in order for more space to be available, then the file system needs to be grown.
    3. The odds of an unrecoverable read error in the course of rebuilding a 3TB consumer SATA hard drive is actually rather high. 1 bit error in 1E14 is the most typical URE published by hard drive manufacturers for consumer SATA, and that translates to 11.4 TB, that is ever 11.4.TB of read, 1 bit error is expected. In the event of an unrecoverable read error, the reconstruction is halted. And a 3 disk RAID 5 means you're reading 6TB of data to rebuild the 3rd drive. So your statistical chance of failure is in the vicinity of 50/50. Not good odds. Therefore you already need to consider RAID 6, or RAID 10 (or RAID 1 + linear which is growable by adding 2 disks of the same size at a time, which can be different sizes than the disks already in the linear array).

  • Netware Volume Access via CF

In one of my CF templates I am attempting to list/view
directory contents located on a Netware Volume. I've followed this
    tech note
    http://kb.adobe.com/selfservice/viewContent.do?externalId=tn_17454
and still have not had any success. The log app.log generated in CF
    Server reflects the following...
The cause of the output exception was that. java.io File not
found exception. \\NW1\Vol1\Directory (Access is denied)
I am guessing this is related to a permissions issue but must
be missing something fundamental here. Any suggestions would be
    greatly appreciated.

Login to the CF machine as the user running coldfusion. Try
to access the network share. Can you? If not it would appear the
user's permissions are not proper. Next stop ColdFusion and run it
from the commandline using cfusionmx7\bin\cfstart as a domain
administrator. See if CF can access the network share then. If it
does, it re-affirms this is a cfuser permissions issue.

  • Verify volume failed with error Could not unmount disk!!

Im having weird things with my fw lacie 200gb. I come across these weird white cubes which pop up in the search mode in finder. So i tried to repair permissions of the Lacie disc and i get this sign
Verify volume failed with error Could not unmount disk
    What is this?
What are those white cubes in the finder?

    Hi gizeh12!
Are you able to verify the volume of the disc (not permissions)? It could possibly be some bad/corrupt sectors on the drive. Is it a white box with a dashed line outline? Does the file size show the accurate value in "Get Info" when you click on the file?
Are those files somewhere else as well?

I am taking "fails with many clients" to mean that the method fails with "certain clients". (At first I thought maybe you meant, "once you have a lot of clients connected, it fails").
This is due to limitations of Web Browsers as FTP clients.
Even within the "standard" FTP world, it is generally accepted that Web Browsers make lousy FTP clients. This is especially true for use of this feature, which is definitely not "standard". Web Browsers make so many assumptions about what to do with a URL that you type in, or how to build the file links to what is found at the destination, that they just cannot make reasonable use of this special feature.
This FTP "remote server navigation" feature was brought over from NetWare. Web Browsers couldn't make use of it then, either.
I expect this navigation feature to work on:
    - command line clients
    - GUI FTP clients, *if* they allow you to enter an explicit command so you can enter the "cd" command manually, rather than just click to navigate.

  • Home Directory and different volume failed generates log in failure

I'm running OS X server 10.5.2. The set up is still used for test and learning purposes but I'm nearly finishing and knowing what I can and want to do.
However, there remains a large issue unresolved.
I have several volumes available on me server
    1. the startup volume
    2. a data volume
The users home folders are generated on either the start up or the data volume.
Login is successful for all users when I log in directly on the server.
When I login using my test client (MBP running 10.5.2) the accounts with their home located at the data volume are receiving the following messages:
"You are unable to log in to the user account '<account>' at this time. Logging in to the account failed because an error occurred"
Anyone who can help me with resolving this issue?
Anyone who knows where the error is logged?

I just added the group name and granted that with read and write access to the volume.
That seemed to be the trick.
I'll hope this solves some issues for others, I spend months on this one ...
