Mighty Mouse refuses to scroll down

I've had my mighty mouse since early '08 so i think it's out of warranty(not sure). about 10 months ago the it started to have problems scrolling down. i ignored it and strangely it started working again about a month later.... no cleaning with the paper or damp cloth, no resetting of the PMU. then about a month ago the down and up scroll went out. i tried the PMU thing no go. then cleaning with the with the paper and damp cloth. that worked! but only for the up, the down still doesn't work. is there anything, short of cracking it open with a knife, to get the down working again?
oh and if it helps, when i scroll any way OTHER than down, the ball makes a very quiet clicking noise, but when i scroll down it doesn't.
Thanks for any help

Hi Cort...-
Greetings and welcome to the Apple Discussion boards
Try rolling it on the white sheet of paper again, with emphasis on vigorously rubbing.
Others have reported luck with holding down the mouse ball and spraying a spritz of compressed air inside in order to dislodge the bugger or other debris.
Luck-

My wired mighty mouse no longer scrolls down; only up and sideways. It could be a hardware problem and I guess I should go and by a new mouse but before I do I thought I'd check whether there was any parameter I could change to fix or test this. Anyone else had this problem? Cheers.

  • Mighty Mouse Won't Scroll Down - Solution

My iMac's mighty mouse wouldn't scroll down even after furious cleaning with a damp cloth and all that this discussion site advised.
I took the mouse into the new Cabot Circus Apple Store here in Bristol, UK. Five minutes later I was out again with a fully restored mighty mouse scroll ball.
The 'genius' used a isopropyl alcohol Prep Pad, as used by your doctor to sterile your arm before using a hypodermic needle. You can probably buy these down your local Chemists/Pharmacy. He gave me a strip of these sachets marked "Medium - Alcohol Prep Pad" manufactured by Dynarex Corporation. They seem to be selling for about £1.25 for 200. Cheap as chips even in this day and age.
    http://www.quickmedical.com/dynarex/disposable-wipes/alcohol-wipes.html
He then advised me to clean my mouse this way once a week to keep it in tip-top condition.
I'm sure I read somewhere that one wasn't supposed to use anything other than a damp cloth on these devices. Oh well, there you go.
Hope this helps anyone else who have found their mouse tracker ball has stopped working.

I just move the scroll ball on my mouse on piece of paper rapidly in all directions,
and it works (and its free). I do this when my mouse won't scroll down.
I think you have missed the point.
Try asking yourself, what would you do if rubbing your mouse on paper was no longer enough? That's the situation I was in.

  • Mighty Mouse Can't Scroll Down?

I am having trouble with the Wireless Bluetooth Mighty Mouse. For some odd reason the Scroll Ball will no longer scroll Down? Has anyone else had any of these problems? Does anyone know how to fix them? If so please let me know.

Hmm well I have seen the first article...
I just now tried the second article I cleaned it and everything but I am still unable to scroll down...
I do not have Vertical Scrolling Disabled.
Like I said this mouse is a Hand-Me-Down from my Dad and he has gone through about 5 of them because of this problem. ALTHOUGH His doesn't clean his Apple products that much (it gets on my nerves) BUT I tried Cleaning it and I am still unable to scroll down wards...
The retail price for Mighty Mouses are?
$50.00 or $60.00 for the BlueTooth?
and $30.00 for the Wire Mighty Mouses?
I am thinking maybe I should purchase anther one and have it be MY Mighty Mouse and clean it regularly.
I am using the Mighty Mouse now and it works fine except I can scroll down but I would hate to but another because this one works very well.
I am wondering if Apple could "clean" it if I dropped it off at my local Apple store? Although I could just buy another if I did that?
But if anyone has any other ideas or any other help they could give me that would be great.

  • Mighty Mouse can't Scroll DOWN over Ads

Does anyone else have this issue?
Safari Beta (3.0.3), 10.4.10, USB mighty mouse.
When I go to some pages, say this one:
    http://gamers-creed.com/?p=230.
And scroll down over the ads, the scrolling stops. Scrolling up is fine. It's annoying because it fees like it's intentionally trying to get me to stop and read an ad.
I've narrowed it down to javascript, (off everything is fine) and possibly iFrames. Does anyone have any info, or know of a way to retain full scrollability (is that a word?) and keep evil javascript on?
    Thanks!

    Hi
I've noticed the same with both my iMac Mighty Mouse, and iBook Logitech Mouse. Both machines are using 3.0.3. This has been happening with Beta 3 from the get-go.
I've sent a bug report to Apple via the Safari Menu>Report Bugs to Apple.

  • Wireless Mighty Mouse Refuses To Scroll Up

Hello, I have a small issue.
My wireless mighty mouse suddenly refuses to scrcoll up. I changed the batteries, reconfigured it in Sys Preferences. It will scroll every direction but up.
Do any of you fine people have an idea of what is wrong?
    Thanks

The problem is, they are not designed to be taken apart. They are stuck together with some serious glue. By the time you get it apart, the thing is already a bit of a mess with possible broken bits. And to get it back together is going to need more glue. I can almost guarantee it will look a mess by then. And thats if it still works at all after the surgery. They are quite intricate things inside, even more so the wireless ones.
I've done the job to a couple of these mice, and already 1 of them is acting up again. I dont think it will survive another operation, so it will most likely get binned and substituted with a Logitech, or similar.

  • Mighty Mouse Won't Scroll Down...

...even after I cleaned the wheel with a lightly-watered lint-free cloth. Obviously, I either didn't clean it right or something else is the problem. I also tried spinning the scroll wheel with the Mighty Mouse upside down. What could cause this to happen? What other things should I try?

Aaron don't be afraid to vigorously clean the trackball. It can take it. I turn the MM upside down on my jeans and run it around in all directions when it gets dirty inside. Also, some of the guys here are using alcohol, rather that water to clean it. You can also press your lips around the trackball and blow to get some of the lint buildup to dislodge.
I've actually taken my out-of-warranty MM apart to clean it (Operation Mouse......). It has tiny rollers that get gummed up with dirt, sweat, dead skin cells, body oils and that is what makes it stop working. The trackball slips instead of turning the rollers when they get dirty.

  • HT2845 why doesn't my mighty mouse track ball scroll up or down vertically?

why doesn't my mighty mouse track ball scroll up or down vertically?

    Hi:
New ones are not that expensive, but I would try running it up and down (vigorously) on microfiber cloth or a towel or something.
If that does not fix it...yes I would buy a new one.  I like wireless ones anyway

  • Mighty Mouse won't scroll

None of the answers to this topic solved my problem. All of a sudden my bluetooth mighty mouse won't scroll. I can set it to 360 degrees and it will scroll horizontally. But it won't scroll horizontally or vertically if I set it to both. Help!

    Have you tried resetting bluetooth?
I have been having the same problem since nearly as long as I've had my mighty mouse, and cleaning it never solved the problem.
I just called apple and got them to send me out a new one, but before they did they told me to do this.
Turn off your Mac, removed the power and battery and hold down the power button for 5 seconds. Then turn it back on, but while you turn it back on hold down the altcmnd+RP buttons together. You will hear it ching two times as it turns on, let go after the second ching. This apparently resets the bluetooth and it fixed my mouse, it now works perfectly.
I'd recommend taking the advise of an apple technical advisor first before trying this, I have a MacBook from last year and that's what i did.

  • My mouse won't scroll down

My mouse won't scroll down.  It only scrolls up. Even after cleaning.

If it's is a Mighty Mouse (has a roller ball on top) then you did not clean it well enough. Get a clean sheet of  white paper and put it on a flat hard surface and very vigourously roll the ball on the paper for 60-90 seconds. This should dislodge the gunk, if it doesn't  you can try restarting in Safe Mode to reset some of the caches. If that does not do it you can do a SMC reset and if that doesn't work then it's time for a new mouse.
    SMC RESET
    Shut down the computer.
Unplug the computer's power cord and all peripherals.
Press and hold the power button for 5 seconds.
    Release the power button.
    Attach the computers power cable.
Press the power button to turn on the computer.
    PRAM RESET
    Shut down the computer.
Locate the following keys on the keyboard: Command, Option, P, and R. You will need to hold these keys down simultaneously in step 4.
    Turn on the computer.
Press and hold the Command-Option-P-R keys. You must press this key combination before the gray screen appears.
Hold the keys down until the computer restarts and you hear the startup sound for the second time.
    Release the keys.

  • Wireless Mighty Mouse - No Horizontal Scroll

    PB G4 10.4.6

    Brand new Wireless Mighty Mouse.
    Vertical Scroll - ok
    Zoom -ok
Will not scroll Horizontally - and have no idea of
    what 360 is
To achieve horizontal scrolling you have to select the 360 Degree option. With this option, the mighty mouse driver activates the x-axis sensor inside the mouse. With both x- and y-axis sensors working, the scroll ball operates like your typical analog ball mouse of yore--only it's upside-down. Personally, I think the System Preference option should read "2π Radians."

  • I have an iMAC from about 2007. The mouse will not scroll down. Can this be fixed?

I have an iMAC from about 2007. The mouse will not scroll down. Can this be fixed?

You have to remember, where the scroll ball is, there is a small gap which picks up dust and fluff.   That detritus gets everywhere and in your case affects the downward scroll.
Adding just a touch Linc Davis's suggestion, after you have vigorously rubbed the scroll ball on the pad, tap it on a hard surface from time to time.   Sometimes you will see small amounts of fluff appear.   You should also see dirty marks on the pad.

  • Every time I scroll up on my wireless mouse, the page scrolls down instead.

Everytime I scroll up on my WIRELESS MOUSE, the page scrolls down instead. When I scroll down, the page scrolls up! Help? What happened? Do I need a new one?

You can change it in System Preferences > Mouse > Point & Click tab > uncheck Scroll direction: natural.

  • Mighty Mouse won't scroll up, only down

I had this problem again tonight, but this time a restart didn't work.
So I took the mouse and turned it upside down, and rolled with pressure the scroll ball on my mouse pad. I rolled in all directions, then plugged it back in. It worked. Which leads me to believe that the first time it happened, the restart didn't have anything to do with it.
Before I rolled the scroll ball, I tried just unplugging and plugging back in, besides the restart. It seems that the scroll ball got "out of whack" as I now can here a a louder "zipping" sound as the scroll ball moves around.
I read some other posts about this problem, you might want to try rolling your ball around your mousepad and apply some pressure.

<q>I read some other posts about this problem, you might want to try rolling your ball around your mousepad and apply some pressure.</q>
...and while you're at it, perform this action on a slightly moistened (I used Glassex) tissue. My MM wouldn't scroll down and I suspected dirt and grease from my finger to be the culprit. The cleaning solved the problem, and I even didn't unplug it.
