Mighty Mouse: Scroll ball does not scroll down

My scroll wheel on my 'might mouse' now only scrolls UP and Side to Side. I have tried restarting, checking system prefs. etc. but no joy. How did we manage before?!! If any one has the answer I would be grateful. Thanks Rob

Finally an answer that works!
I had a mouse that would not scroll up. Down or side to side worked fine.
I tried cleaning the wheel with a cotton swab dipped in alcohol, as this had worked several times before. But it had no effect today. I tried the "lint free soft cloth lightly moistened" trick too, but this did not help, either, even after watching the demonstration video and turning the mouse upside down. But unplugging the mouse, and applying some pressure while rolling the ball upside down on a piece of clean paper is what did the trick! Thank you for saving me from this incredible annoyance!

why is my mighty mouse scrolling down but not up on my browsers?

Usually it is accumulated crud: skin oils and flakes of skin and dirt, but some have been accepted for repair by Apple. Occasionally a restart fixes the problem. If not there was a recent discussion that yielded several promising suggestions:
    http://discussions.apple.com/message.jspa?messageID=2248877#2248877
These included cleaning the ball with a soft cloth, cleaning the ball with a baby wipe, and disassembling the mouse to thoroughly clean the interior.

  • Why isn't my wired Mighty Mouse scrolling down?

Some days like right now my wired Mighty Mouse that came with my late 2007 20" aluminum iMac doesn't want to scroll downwards. The scroll ball scrolls upwards and sideways perfectly but doesn't want to scroll down. Why is it doing this? I tried cleaning the area of the scroll ball but still nothing. Please don't say that I need a new mouse.

I have the same problems with my less than six weeks old 24" iMac & two yr old macbook: i always wipe my hands before using them. I have tried most suggestions on this forum and others to no avail.
I could probably get a replacement thru apple care for my iMac, but since the problem is so prevalent, another mouse is not a viable solution.
At this time, I actually prefer using an old cheap wired mouse that was in storage .
To those considering another brand, I had random waking & waking only with restarting issues with a wireless logitech mouse on my macbook.

  • Mighty Mouse Scroll Down Issues

Hello, I have a wired Mighty Mouse that I use with my Mac Mini. For awhile my mighty mouse will scroll up, and side to side but it will not scroll down.
I have used a lint free cloth and tried cleaning it vigorously upside down with the felt cloth as well as other objects with no luck. It is not within coverage so I was wondering if anyone has had some other resolutions for this and please no answers like "Buy a new mouse". I have another mouse but I want this one working.
    Thank you for your time

Isopropyl alcohol.  Preferably 95% but I've done this with the typical 70%, so whatever you have in your medicine cabinet.  With Mouse unplugged (powered off, battery removed for wireless mice,) put the mouse on a paper towel and pour a small amount of alcohol over the ball.  What you are trying to do is get some alcohol down past the ball and into the internal rollers, which have some gunk on them that you're trying to remove.  Isopropyl alcohol will not corrode the electronics and will help loosen and break up the gunk.  Roll the ball and pour a little more.  Repeat a few times.  You will want to let everything dry as much as possible before using.  Thus pouring a small amount and not the whole bottle and not "dunking" the mouse in a bowl filled with isopropyl alcohol.  Do that only if you get really desperate, but if you do, then let it drip and air dry afterward.
There is not much space for the gunk to be "flushed" out so eventually this may not work.  At which point you can look on Youtube and see several tutorials on disassembling the mouse.  The mouse is glued together so this is not without risk.  You may end up just buying a replacement mouse so just be prepared before attempting disassembly or even the alcohol.
(In case you're concerned, isopropyl alcohol has been used for cleaning around electronics for many, many, many years.  Used to clean water/syrup/milk/juice damage since it doesn't corrode the circuit boards.  While it generally doesn't conduct electricity, it was generally discouraged to use it on live equipment for various reasons.  And due to skin irritation, gloves often were used, but in this case with the mouse and the small amount being used, it's up to you to whether you want to use gloves and eye protection.)

  • Wireless Mighty Mouse Right Button does not work well

Recently I bought in Online Apple Store a Wireless Mighty Mouse.
I installed the drivers that came in the CD, and, I defined in the System Preferences the second button of the mouse (the Right Button) to function as the Secondary Button.
But after the computer going to sleep and I wakes it up, or I stop a little to work with the Mouse, or then without none apparent reason, the Right Button behaves as the Left Button, like if it had one and only button in the Mouse.
To solve the problem I have to disconnect the mouse and/or the bluetooth connection, so that the Right Button functions again as I defined it in the System Preferences like a Secondary Button. But I think that is not the solution for who needs a mouse to work.
Therefore, I thank you a solution to solve this problem.
    Sincerely,
    Paulo
The computers where I worked with this Wireless Mighty Mouse and where I had this problem was:
    - a PowerBook 12", 1.5GHz
    - and a MacBook Pro 15", 1.83GHz
    - both with MacOS 10.4.8
    (Sorry for my bad english)

There are a few threads going describing this problem Discussions. (E.g., check out this one.)
It appears that there's probably a hardware QC issue with some fraction of the wireless Mighty Mice. Replacing the bad mouse -- either at a local Apple Store or via AppleCare online -- is what I'd suggest. (That's what I ended up doing and the replacement mouse has been fine.)

  • HT2845 why doesn't my mighty mouse track ball scroll up or down vertically?

why doesn't my mighty mouse track ball scroll up or down vertically?

    Hi:
New ones are not that expensive, but I would try running it up and down (vigorously) on microfiber cloth or a towel or something.
If that does not fix it...yes I would buy a new one.  I like wireless ones anyway

  • Mighty Mouse Scroll Ball always breaks

Hi, I have a 2 month old iMac, and This has been a problem for about 6 weeks, but I haven't gotten around to posting it. My mighty mouse scroll ball breaks repeatedly and I have been fixing it, but it is a real pain. Don't suggest not using my mighty mouse, because I love and hate it, I love how it has multiple buttons, but hate how the scroll ball breaks all the time, can someone help me?

It just needs cleaning. Use a damp cotton rag and vigorously move it across the mouse ball. Do this for about 30 seconds. BTW, there are instructions in your owners manual about this. This is from page 63 of your Users Guide:
    *Cleaning Your Mighty Mouse*
You may need to clean your mouse from time to time to remove dirt and dust that has
accumulated in the scroll ball area. Hold the mouse upside-down and roll the scroll ball
vigorously with the cloth that came with your iMac, or another clean, soft, lint-free
cloth, to help dislodge any particles that may interfere with proper scrolling.

  • How can I get Mighty Mouse scroll button to work?

My Mighty Mouse has started to not respond to the scroll button. Sometimes it will scroll up but not down at all.

If you don't mind losing warranty you mighty want to open your mouse. A good tutorial to do this can be found here: http://arstechnica.com/old/content/2005/08/dissect.ars
I already did this twice and it worked like a charm. But be aware that you do this on your own risk.

  • Mighty mouse scrolling problems

I'm having trouble with my mighty mouse scrolling. It was working fine now not. I just replaced the batteries after indicatortold me to do so. I've tried re-loading the software (though the install routine called it an upgrade).

    Mine wont scroll down.
    Up, left, right no problem.
If I put the mouse near my ear I can hear a soft clicking when I scroll up, left or right, but no sound when I scroll down.
I have tried cleaning and pressing hard, etc.
I just got off a 47 minute troubleshooting session with apple support and they finally agreed to replace it. I can't believe how nontechnical and unknowledgeable the level 1 support at apple is. It was clearly a mechanical trouble and I described it very clearly, yet they insisted on making me log into other accounts, check preferences, replace batteries, etc. On top of that I was put on hold several times while the tech checked with others about what to do and filled out forms, etc. I have to say I really am not happy with apple support based on this and all previous experiences. On top of this I have to give a credit card# as collateral until I send the defective unit back. If that is the policy why don't they save the 47 minutes and just process the replacement just like the cell phone companies do??
Oh well. Good luck to all of you with your mouse problems..

  • My mouse scrolls down, but never up?

I have an Apple USB Mouse plugged in to my keyboard (it came with my MacPro and is about 4 years old).  Recently, for no apparent reason, it stopped scrolling up in all applications (not just Internet sites).  It scrolls down just fine, but never up.  I've tried playing with the settings, but nothing seems to fix this issue.  Is my mouse kaput?

  • Mighty Mouse Track Ball

Does any one else have issues with the mighty mouse track ball?? My does not work half the time. When it is working it will only work in one direction half of that time.
Does anyone know of ways to clean it?? Or keep this from happening?

I've read all the posting about this..in recent months I've been cleaning the track ball 6,7,8,9....times every day. I had planned to buy a wireless Mighty Mouse but not now, it'd be cheaper to sit in front of my Mac bashing my testicles with a mallet for the same effect. Apple, this is an utter design disaster. Like Joachim says, why not a mouse we can open and clean easily, or a larger, more robust track ball mechanism? I'm off to but a mouse by anyone but Apple...

  • Macbook does not shut down or restart. It stops at an blank white screen with the cursor moving around it. Updated to the latest software

I have a Macbook Air 13.3" 2012 model. For a couple of days my Macbook does not shuts down. It just stops at a blank white screen with the cursor still hovering around it.  I have to shut it down forcefully every time using the power button.

These instructions must be carried out as an administrator. If you have only one user account, you are the administrator.
Launch the Console application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Console in the icon grid.
    Step 1
For this step, the title of the Console window should be All Messages. If it isn't, select
SYSTEM LOG QUERIES ▹ All Messages
from the log list on the left. If you don't see that list, select
              View ▹ Show Log List
from the menu bar at the top of the screen.
In the top right corner of the Console window, there's a search box labeled Filter. Initially the words "String Matching" are shown in that box. Enter "BOOT_TIME" (without the quotes.)
Each message in the log begins with the date and time when it was entered. Note the timestamps of the BOOT_TIME log messages, which refer to the times when the system was started. Now clear the search box and scroll back in the log to the last boot time when you had the problem. Select the messages logged before the boot, during the time something abnormal was happening. Copy them to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C. Paste into a reply to this message by pressing command-V.
For example, if the system was unresponsive or was failing to shut down for three minutes before you forced a restart, post the messages timestamped within three minutes before the boot time, not after. Please include the BOOT_TIME message at the end of the log extract—not at the beginning.
If there are long runs of repeated messages, please post only one example of each. Don’t post many repetitions of the same message.
☞ When posting a log extract, be selective. A few dozen lines are almost always more than enough.
☞ Some private information, such as your name, may appear in the log. Anonymize before posting.
Please don't indiscriminately dump thousands of lines from the log into this discussion.
Please don't post screenshots of log messages—post the text.
    Step 2
    In the Console window, select
DIAGNOSTIC AND USAGE INFORMATION ▹ System Diagnostic Reports
(not Diagnostic and Usage Messages) from the log list on the left. If you don't see that list, select
              View ▹ Show Log List
    from the menu bar.
There is a disclosure triangle to the left of the list item. If the triangle is pointing to the right, click it so that it points down. You'll see a list of reports. A crash report has a name that begins with the name of the crashed process and ends in ".crash". A panic report has a name that begins with "Kernel" and ends in ".panic". A shutdown stall report has a name that ends in ".shutdownstall". Select the most recent of each, if any. The contents of the report will appear on the right. Use copy and paste to post the entire contents—the text, not a screenshot. It's possible that none of these reports exists.
I know the report is long, maybe several hundred lines. Please post all of it anyway.
☞ If you don't see any reports listed, but you know there was a crash or panic, you may have chosen Diagnostic and Usage Messages from the log list. Choose DIAGNOSTIC AND USAGE INFORMATION instead.
In the interest of privacy, I suggest that, before posting, you edit out the “Anonymous UUID,” a long string of letters, numbers, and dashes in the header of the report, if it’s present (it may not be.)
☞ Please don’t post other kinds of diagnostic report—they're very long and rarely helpful.

  • Web Analysis does not drill down (Essbase datasource)

    Hi!
I have a web analysis document which does not drill down to next level when double clicking on a parent level. In my report I have children of Area dimension selected individually and their parent on rows ( this means I have not used selection where I select only top member and its children; this is because one of the children should not be in the report). This is not an security issue, because I have admin rights to the essbase cube.
Usually when double-clicking on a member in report it should drill down to next level. This report does not drill down.
The strange thing is that if I select "Keep Only" for the top member of that dimension and then double-click it then drills down nicely???
When using a excel add-in and retrieving data there the same kind of report drills down without problems. Any ideas why this drill down does not work properly in Workspace (and also in Web Analysis Stuidio) ?
    kind regards,
    user637777

    Hi!
I checked out the dimension in question. It seems to have implied shares (parent having only one child). There seems to be implied shares in almost all child hierarchies which might explain the web analysis behaviour.
We are using V11. The application is an aggregate storage application.

  • External hard drive does not shut down

Hello, When my mini mac goes to sleep my samsung external hard drive does not shut down or dismount properly. when i wake computer i have a error message stating improperly ejected hard drive. It also does not reconize HD until I disconnect and reconnet??? PLEASE HELP Thank you

My Mini was doing the same thing until I reset the PRAM. With four external drives. They would stop inadvertently with an "improperly ejected" error. Granted two of the drives went bad (6 and 7 years old) but a brand spanking new Seagate and a 3 year old Hitachi drive doing the same. Haven't seen the error since resetting the PRAM.
If you don't know how to do that, Reboot while holding the Cmd+Opt+P+R keys until your hear the startup chime three times and then release the keys.
