Mighty Mouse scrolls up, but not down

All of a sudden my Mighty Mouse stopped scrolling down. Is this something that a cleaning might help, or something more serious?

You probably just need to clean it:
Use a clean lint-free cloth lightly moistened with water. Wipe the ball and the surrounding area, making sure to rotate the ball itself to ensure complete coverage. If the scrolling feels rough or if the scroll ball isn't scrolling up, down, or side-to-side, hold the mouse upside-down and roll the ball vigorously while cleaning it to help dislodge any particles that may have collected on the internal hardware. Finally, give it a good rap on the desk to get the last bits of gunk out.
Let us know if this cures the problem.
Miriam-
You almost always recommend this procedure for cleaning the scroll ball, and this is precisely what Apple suggests.
I've had my iMac for 2 months, and for the past 2 weeks the scroll ball has been increasingly erratic: It doesn't always work when I scroll horizontally, or vertically downward; and it's just about useless when it comes to scrolling vertically upwards. I've repeatedly tried the above procedure to clean the scroll ball, but it hasn't worked.
As I searched the discussion forums, I did find an alternative procedure that is attributed to you: The "rub-the-ball-on-a-piece-of-white-paper" method. I tried it. It immediately worked!!! I am absolutely amazed...+your solution is BRILLIANT!+
Besides offering my deepest thanks for such a gem, I would like to know (1) How did you ever discover it? and (2) Why is it that you always seem to offer Apple's suggestion and not your procedure?

  • Mouse scrolls up, but not down!

I have a standard Apple mouse on my iMac with the little scrolly button on it. I've had it for some time and I've never been able to scroll down with it.
Is this some wacky Apple design concept or do you think it's not working properly? If not, how do I fix it?
    Kind Regards,

    Hi Blitz Spirit,
Your mouse probably needs cleaning, in your owners manual there are instructions also you find them at:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1537
Others have had success by placing a clean sheet of printer paper (normal copier paper) on a table turning over their mouse and vigorously rolling the mouse on the paper to try and dislodge any dirt or particles inside the mouse. This should be done for about 30 seconds.

  • Wireless Mighty Mouse Scroll Ball does not scroll downward

    Hello,
I have a mighty mouse I use with my iMac and I cannot seem to get it to scroll down (any window) lately. The scroll ball does scroll up, but not down. I did reset the mouse, but is it time for a cleaning? I have used it for about 7-8 months. Thanks for the replies.

Great adivce. My MM is 2 years old and just stared suffering the tortures of the damned. Tried it with water and dry with no joy. Tossed some rubbing alcohol on a bath towel. Did the trick despite lint. Work good for now.

  • Mighty Mouse scroll won't go down

Out of no where I can't scroll down on my mighty mouse, only up. Any ideas how to fix this, any ideas on how this could have happened?

    Tyler,
The Mighty Mouse is tempermental and I have no clue why ours acts the same way but it goes back to normal on a restart. You have posted a question about one of Apple's newest products in the old folks home of the Apple Discussions.
    Posting here for hardware:

    and here for software:

will give you greater exposure for more precise answers. I am certain that it is software related becuse our mini, your G5 and Psyko's G5 all exhibit the same behavior.
Good luck and thanks for visiting us old guys! : )

  • Mighty Mouse: Scroll ball does not scroll down

My scroll wheel on my 'might mouse' now only scrolls UP and Side to Side. I have tried restarting, checking system prefs. etc. but no joy. How did we manage before?!! If any one has the answer I would be grateful. Thanks Rob

    Finally an answer that works!
I had a mouse that would not scroll up. Down or side to side worked fine.
I tried cleaning the wheel with a cotton swab dipped in alcohol, as this had worked several times before. But it had no effect today. I tried the "lint free soft cloth lightly moistened" trick too, but this did not help, either, even after watching the demonstration video and turning the mouse upside down. But unplugging the mouse, and applying some pressure while rolling the ball upside down on a piece of clean paper is what did the trick! Thank you for saving me from this incredible annoyance!

  • Magic mouse scrolling, clicking, but NOT tracking

Magic mouse, about a year old, stopped tracking recently. Its bluetooth connection is there just fine, is discoverable etc. Its power light shows (the little green one). It scrolls, clicks, right-clicks. But it doesn't track. The light sensor area under the mouse doesn't show a red light when I flip it over.
Sounds like a hardware failure yes?
What to do - visit the geniuses?

You won't see the laser light, it's not visible to the eye. Try cleaning the laser sensor/transmitter with a Q-tip and insure you have good batteries.

  • How can I get Mighty Mouse scroll button to work?

My Mighty Mouse has started to not respond to the scroll button. Sometimes it will scroll up but not down at all.

If you don't mind losing warranty you mighty want to open your mouse. A good tutorial to do this can be found here: http://arstechnica.com/old/content/2005/08/dissect.ars
I already did this twice and it worked like a charm. But be aware that you do this on your own risk.

  • Mighty mouse scrolls down but not up

why is my mighty mouse scrolling down but not up on my browsers?

Usually it is accumulated crud: skin oils and flakes of skin and dirt, but some have been accepted for repair by Apple. Occasionally a restart fixes the problem. If not there was a recent discussion that yielded several promising suggestions:
    http://discussions.apple.com/message.jspa?messageID=2248877#2248877
These included cleaning the ball with a soft cloth, cleaning the ball with a baby wipe, and disassembling the mouse to thoroughly clean the interior.

  • I have an optical mouse that came with my Mac Pro plugged into the USB port on the keyboard. After a year of working normally, the trackball all of a sudden stopped scrolling down. It scrolls up just fine, but not down. Any thoughts?

I have an optical mouse that came with my Mac Pro, the only thing plugged into the USB port on the keyboard. After a year of working normally, the trackball all of a sudden stopped scrolling down. It scrolls up just fine, but not down. Any thoughts?

    Well
I tried all of the suggestions, sort of. I did not have alcohol wipes, but I did take alcohol and pour some ona white paper towel and then rolled the mouse touch ball aroound and that finally cleared up the problem.  Just inverting it on paper did not do the reick, it needed some help with the alcohol.  Of course the probelm is the debris that gets inside and it really needs to come out.
This is a huge problem for RIM devices users too.

  • My mouse scroll ball will not scroll down.

My mouse scroll ball will not scroll down.

Unfortunately the Mighty Mouse is known to have issues when scrolling if it gets dirty. The best you can do is hold it upside down and roll the ball back and forth in every direction for a minute or so, this should help clean it any it may start working again. My school's multimedia lab has 20 workstations that all have that mouse and about half of them work! I'd recommend moving to the magic mouse or another brand's mouse if cleaning does not fix it.

  • Mighty Mouse, Scroll Ball Still Malfunctioning?

    Hi,
I love my Intel iMac and I LOVE my mighty mouse...but the scroll ball is constantly quitting on me.
I clean it just like the apple video, I blow into it, I clean and clean and clean it and then it works for a day or two and then again, it stops.
I'm the most meticulous clean person when it comes to hardware, I even manage Mac labs at a big university - so I have lots of experience with these mighty mouse. They are ALL having the same problem.
Is this karma? Does anyone else have this problem? I'm not sure what to do (both with mine and the one's at work!).
Any suggestions would be apreciated. Thanks!

I am also pretty clean with my Mac. I found that cleaning as recommended by Apple was sufficient, until about two weeks ago, nothing I did to clean it, short of the misadvice to stick a needle into the ball socket, was successful. I found a website that shows how to disassemble the mouse carefully with an Exacto knife and did so. I was amazed at how dirty the rollerbars, especially the one to scroll down, were, in spite of my faithful cleaning routine. When I reassembled the MM I just used a couple strategic drops of super glue to secure the one ring that is glued in place. It will be much easier to disassemble the next time!

  • Mighty Mouse Scroll Ball always breaks

Hi, I have a 2 month old iMac, and This has been a problem for about 6 weeks, but I haven't gotten around to posting it. My mighty mouse scroll ball breaks repeatedly and I have been fixing it, but it is a real pain. Don't suggest not using my mighty mouse, because I love and hate it, I love how it has multiple buttons, but hate how the scroll ball breaks all the time, can someone help me?

It just needs cleaning. Use a damp cotton rag and vigorously move it across the mouse ball. Do this for about 30 seconds. BTW, there are instructions in your owners manual about this. This is from page 63 of your Users Guide:
    *Cleaning Your Mighty Mouse*
You may need to clean your mouse from time to time to remove dirt and dust that has
accumulated in the scroll ball area. Hold the mouse upside-down and roll the scroll ball
vigorously with the cloth that came with your iMac, or another clean, soft, lint-free
cloth, to help dislodge any particles that may interfere with proper scrolling.

  • Mighty Mouse scroll failure

I'll put it in here under MacBook, 'cos I use one, but it's really a Mighty Mouse question – but there doesn't seem to be anywhere to put it...
The scroll 'nubbin'(?) on my corded Mighty Mouse has stopped scrolling down. It will scroll left, right and up, but not down.
I've unplugged and replugged the USB, restarted twice but it refuses to scroll in one of it's four axis.
Is there any troubleshooting I can do before I take my MacBook and mouse to a friends house and try a process of elimination?
MacBook, white   Mac OS X (10.4.6)

Well after using these fixes several times after a while the scroll stopped working (only in the down direction again) completely.
Eventually I resorted to opening the mouse (very fiddly - don't try this at home unless you're willing to buy a new mouse!)
Lo and behold, the tiny rollers encasing the scroll ball were gunged up with that gunk you always had to clean off your mouse rollers back in the day.
Putting the mouse back together is very tough as you have to re-thread the printed circuit ribbon. I also found it was impossible to get the side buttons back in properly so I broke them off - I'd rather have a working scroll wheel and no side buttons.
    So there we are.
    In conclusion:
I regard this mouse as a flawed design - the price you pay for being version 1.0 I suppose. Mouse balls and roller GET CLOGGED UP, this has been recognised for years and have been designed to be user servicable, the fact is this one hasn't been designed very well.
And furthermore, the whole optical mouse idea is inspired by this problem with traditional mice - so to fit Olde Mouse tech to the top side of an optical mouse seems ridiculous.
    Ho hum.
