Mighty mouse sensitivity

First of all... why isn't there a Mighty Mouse category?
I'm not sure where this post fits. It's kind of a hardware and maybe software issue.
Anyway. Here goes...
I have three things about my mouse that are bothering me:
First, Is there a way to adjust the sensitivity of the side squeeze buttons on the Mighty Mouse? I have mine set to activate expose all windows when I squeeze it which I love and use all the time. I just wish that the squeeze buttons weren't soooo sensitive. It seems like I sometimes don't even have to squeeze it and expose will go into effect. It happens quite a bit without me wanting it to.
The second thing is sometimes when I do squeeze the mouse to activate expose, all of my open windows will swoop like they're supposed to but will just spring right back to where they were without me clicking on any of them. Drives me crazy.
The third thing is, sometimes when I move my cursor with my mouse and pick it up and put it down on my mouse pad, the impact will make my screen jump (scroll) and/or zoom depending on the application I'm in (some apps I use can zoom in and out when I roll the scroll ball). It's screwed me up a few times. I am not a heavy handed mouser either. I learned to hold a mouse very delicately with my fingers, like I'm holding an egg, to avoid fatigue and wrist injury.
It just seems like my mouse is super sensitive and the adjustment settings in System Prefs. doesn't really change anything.

I noticed a similar problem but was able to fix it.
I just started using the Mighty Mouse a few days ago and it seemed great, though I did disable the right click function. The side buttons were working fine. Then this morning I came in and found that every time I touched the mouse it launched Expose. At first I thought I was going crazy because I didn't recall it being that way before. Finally, I simply unplugged the mouse and then plugged it back in. Problem solved! Now it is completely back to normal. Just curious now whether I'll have to keep doing this every few days.

  • Apple Mighty Mouse sensitivity increase

    Hello,
I have Macbook with bluetooth Mighty Mouse (latest model) and it works slowly for me. I mean sensitivity (tracking), which I have set to highest level, but cursor still moves very slow against my PC experience (I hope you understand me, I am not native english:) Is there any way how to increase sensitivity (tracking)? Straight in Leopard, or with some other software?
    Thanks

After some googling, I found program Steermouse that solves it, but it is shareware. As freeware exists iMouseFix, it improves acceleration bit but still not so good...

  • My Mighty Mouse is driving me mighty nuts!

Is Apple's Mighty Mouse sensitive to heat? I am getting the impression it is. After using it for a few minutes while working on an image and holding it under my hand, the cursor movement gets erratic, uncontrollable. Makes it hard to paint masks or even select something from the menu.
After letting it go for a few minutes it will work normal again, until I had it under my hand for a little while. It seems that the laser is affected by the heat radiated by my hand. Apple praises it as being more sensitive than any other optical mouse. Is that what they mean?
I use an identical mouse for my MacBook, without any problems. But I don't hold that mouse in my hand for long periods, since its only for control documents, e-mail, web and such.
Do I need a refrigerated mouse pad?

I can't comment too much on the heat issue, although if it really is responding to heat then you have a broke mouse. Maybe a broken solder joint since all the new lead free solder processes produce a much less reliable and failure prone bond than the good old fashion true lead solder (IMHO RoHS was a liberal stupidly inspired waste of time and money, because there is still nasty stuff caste into the environment when a RoHS board is improperly discarded: how about do correct recycling of ALL our garbage, and then RoHS would be completely unnecessary and we would end up with a REAL clean environment instead of just pretending we did something! OK, off my soap box .
But you might also be masking the true problem. The Mighty Mice are capacitive sensing devices. This makes then very sensitive to... your fingers for example. But it also makes they sensitive to noise. In particular, I found (and proved) that a particularly inexpensive and popular (Best Buy) phone charger produced a huge amount of low frequency noise. Many/most/all of these chargers are cheap switching power supplies, and they are often poorly designed and filtered, resulting in copious low frequency noise emissions. This noise radiated through the air and power cords and got picked up by my Mighty Mouse and drove it nuts! Made it completely unusable. Until, I discovered the culprit. Unplugged the phone charger, the Mighty Mouse was fine. Plugged it in (typically near the iMac or in its same power strip) and poof! Problem back! I ended up just making sure my charger was always plugged in on the other side of the room, distancing it from the Mouse. Apple was informed of this and they may have since added more filtering to the Mighty Mouse But it might be hard for them to filter out the switching power supply noise and also still pick up the desired signals associated with your fingers. It might just be one of those compromises necessary to have a cool technology.
So, before you send your Mouse back for replacement, make sure there are none of these nasty little switching power supplies near your Mac (they are used with almost all peripherals). Might want to get a good filtered power strip too. I now use a Tripplite Model TLP810NET which filters and robustly protects everything (AC, LAN, Coax, Phone, got mine from Digikey). This won't prevent interference from over the air noise, but it will knock out most of the over the power line noise.
    Hope this helps

  • Need Help: Wireless Mighty Mouse's Roller Ball Sluggish, Not Sensitive...

    Hello all.
*I have followed Apple's Support Docu* to "hold the mouse upside-down and roll the ball vigorously while cleaning it to help dislodge any particles that may have collected on the internal hardware".
But after I did that a few times, *my Mighty Mouse's rolling is still very sluggish, especially rolling/scrolling downwards, it is very in-sensitive, I almost have to push down the roller ball hard and scroll, then it will be effective.*
*Any idea to fix this?* Or my mouse's "time is up"?
    Thanks and cheers

Sure just needs cleaning. Get some Foam cleaner. Spray on tissue/cloth flip mouse upside down and scroll in the problematic direction for 2 mins.
Add more foam cleaner to cloth and repeat until you have completed the points on a Compass.
Its dirt and grease that causes that. Its a known design problem. A simple clean usually resolves for a few months and then you have to repeat again.
ANY CHEAP FOAM CLEANER SPRAY WORKS FINE. as long as its for Computers.

  • Mighty Mouse's side buttons too sensitive...

    Hi there,
Every two seconds, the fonction of the side button gets activated because I press them by mistake... It's been two weeks and I still hit them by mistake.
How do I make the Mighty Mouse's side buttons less sensitive?
    Thanks!
    Chris.

for me it's actually static that makes the side buttons operate all on their own just if my hand is barely touching. i don't have this problem when i'm on tile flooring with my new iMac, but in my bedroom on carpet, the mouse and computer act weird becasue of dry climate and static. if i keep my hand on the metal base of the imac i have no problems. as soon as i remove my hand, problems. i'm now working on grounding my computer but that hasn't worked yet. i need to be de-static in some way i think.

  • Mighty Mouse Lost its Touch Sensitivity

After cleaning the roller ball on my wireless Mighty Mouse its lost ability to have multiple functions. I reset my preferences and still no luck. I now have to set my mouse to only have one primary click for it to work at all. I think the thing is just broken, but maybe someone can help me out.

Sorry mate, don't know. But, if you have AppleCare on your Mac, realise that that warranty extends to most other Apple products that you use with your Mac. This includes your Mighty Mouse and Apple wifi devices if you had any. If you have AppleCare on the Mac, call up AppleCare and initiate a repair which would likely just turn out to be an exchange since they don't repair Mighty Mouse.

  • Mighty mouse alternative for OSX and XP

Just ordered a Mac Pro - upgrading from G5 Powermac. I got the mighty mouse with the G5 and of course the MP comes with the same. I have gotten used to the mighty mouse to a point but part of the reason for getting the MP is for Windows and gaming. For this I think another mouse with 'real' buttons might be better. What are your recommendations for a quality wired multi-purpose mouse (XP and OSX) and are there any mouses (mice/moose/meece) that have a scroll wheel similar to the might mouse one (very useful in PS etc). I'm not keen on trackball types btw.
    Thanks

The Logitech MX510. Love it w/ Mac and Windows.
I'm a QA engineer w/ Avid and purchased this mouse for multi-button assignment mouse testing on mac and pc. I have one at home now too, it's the cat's meow. (sorry bad joke).
I just couldn't get use to the mighty mouse. Don't dig the "Touch-sensitive top shell".

  • Mighty Mouse Question

Trying to help my sister with a problem in iphoto. When I tell her to right click on a photo, she says that no menu shows up. What could be wrong? I also had her try right clicking on other things and still no menu. Does something need to be activated in her mouse preferences?

A simple fix for Mighty Mouse right-click issues
Thu, Jan 4 '07 at 7:30AM PST • Submitted by shakerben
I have heard many people complaining that the Mighty Mouse doesn't recognise their right clicks, due to the touch-sensitive nature of the device. I personally have no problems with it, but a lot of my friends use my Mac and seem not to have the knack for right-clicking. So I came up with a solution, and now no one has any problems.
I simply changed secondary button to the ball rather than the right button. The mouse seems to recognise when you're pressing the ball every time. It's very a simple hint, but it really works.

  • Mighty Mouse Random Clicking

OK, so the search function is disabled until tomorrow, so please don't flame me for not searching...
Starting this morning, my mighty mouse (wired) started clicking (second button clicking, I think) randomly, preventing me essentially from using it as it would continuously click while I tried to work, pushing my current application into the background. Am using a wireless Microsoft mouse as a backup currently.
I have tried disconnecting and reconnecting the mouse numerous times, and have even unplugged and replugged the power supply (UPS) in case there was some kind of "lost ground" issue.
I am a new iMac user about to drop my Windows machine altogether, and this clicking problem is driving me crazy! Any suggestions?

I might have found the solution to your problem.
I just purchased an iMac for a friend, and was telling them how Mac's are a lot better than PC's. We removed his old PC, threw it aside and set-up his new Mac. When it was all set-up the mouse started to do this crazy clicking and entering Exposé randomly, also the right click function would not work.
My friend was not impressed with his first experience with Mac.
Anyway, we called Applecare to no avail, they didn't have a clue of what was happening. I then took the whole computer back to the store and they set it up at their shop to test it and it worked perfectly. I stood there scratching my head. I took the computer to my place and it worked perfectly there all day.
Later I took it back to my friends house and guess what? They mouse is going all crazy again.
We tried setting it up in different rooms in his house, also to no avail.
At this point we where going to return the whole system and get another one. Then I decided to use trusty Google search and I found this article in some forum www.macintouch.com/readerreports/mightymouse/topic4048.html I scrolled down and read many others with the same problem and what they did to solve the problem.
From the forum I gathered that there is a design flaw in the mouse that Apple doesn't know about. It makes the mouse extremely sensitive to your body's static electricity because it doesn't have proper grounding. That is why your Microsoft mouse works and the Mighty Mouse doesn't. I further gathered that the reason it worked at my house and not at my friends is probably due to bad earth connection at his house or to some appliance interfering with the static in the air.
The bad earth connection theory was pretty much proved by people stating that when they touched the metal case or the metal keyboard with one hand, and using the mouse with the other, the erratic behaviour would stop. Why? because you are earthing the static in your body through the metal on the iMac. Try it yourself, it should work.
There are 2 solutions to this:
    1. Get an qualified electrician to come to your house and check that the earth is 100% at your house.
    2. Get another mouse until Apple acknowledge the problem and fix it in their next batch of Mighty Mouse.
I didn't want to spend big buck to get an electrician to check the whole house, so I am opting for the second solution and taking the wired mouse that came with the iMac and swapping it for and unwired version, hopefully that will solve the problem. I'm going into the shop today, I will let you know how I went.
Sorry for the long response, but the more info you are armed with the better a fight you have to get Apple to solve the problem at minimum cost to you.
    I hope this helps you

  • Wired vs wireless Mighty Mouse tracking

Has anyone else found that the wireless Mighty Mouse has different tracking or acceleration compared to the wired version? It feels as if it has some acceleration applied that I can't dial out using USB Overdrive, or that it has a slight dead zone or something when making very slow or small movements.

Yes I did install the software. I'm pretty sure I'm only using one finger. I can't see any perceptible difference between the way I'm using the wired and the wireless versions. Maybe the wired version is less sensitive. Also there is big difference in the weight of the two. The wireless is heavier (due to the batteries I imagine) and the wired seems downright feather light compared to it.
    But thanks for the feedback

  • Imac mighty mouse squeeze

I am loving my new imac! But I am having a problem with the mighty mouse that shipped with it. I've found that the "squeeze" side buttons are "clicking" when I just barely touch the mouse. I thought perhaps the mouse was not on a level surface, but after trying different mouse pads, paper, and desk, it still does it. The squeeze button by default brings up the expose program, and it became so annoying I had to disable that. All it does now is just click non-stop. I took it up to my local apple store, and don't ya know, it worked fine. Brought it home, and same thing. I've since found a few other discussions here that suggest it may be an electrical problem (things like touching the metal base of the imac, or removing a desktop lamp) have fixed the problem. My fix... I went out and had to buy a new $19 mouse. I hope apple will consider a recall on these items. I see that several of the other discussions have been closed: http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=359574&tstart=0
    and here:
    http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=345970&tstart=0
But I've not seen an official fix to this problem.
Any help would be appreciated, perhaps I just could not find the official fix.

I speak and write English as a second language. I run a spell & grammar check of everything before I post. I'm not trying to sound legalistic.
I know of no official fix. And I seriously doubt that Apple considers this an issue that needs a fix.
My point was that your MM doesn't have a problem, as it worked properly at the Apple store. It has a problem in your environment, your home. If Apple traded you another MM and it behaved the same way in your home, the problem would still be with your home, not with the MM. I don't think that is Apple's problem, unfortunately it is yours. And please, don't think me unfeeling for your situation. I wish you could have a MM that worked for you in your current environment. It's a great mouse. I love the scrollball. Both the left and right click work perfectly for me in my home, my environment. My hand just hasn't developed the coordination to use the side buttons.
I apologize for the chastising tone. You received the ire of my sensitivity to the topic. I have been in this forum almost from day one, trying to offer assistance for just about anything that has come up. Even to the point of extensively researching topics I don't know off the top of my head to give a hand, especially if no one else is responding. There are some folks around here who never pitch in a hand to help, but they are lurking in the peripheral shadows and the first note of general criticism about the iMac, the Intel chips vs AMD, the MM, the tactile feel of the Apple keyboard, the built-in speakers, the AirPort card, ad infinitum, and they jump on the bandwagon, claws bared, ready to get in their digs. (Is that too many mixed metaphors?)
For example, people have grimy fingers; dirt, oil, dead skin that sloughs off, etc. and eventually gum up the scrollball mechanism inside the mouse, so it needs to be cleaned. There have been countless threads of Apple's bad MM design because the scrollball needs to be cleaned occasionally, perhaps more often for some, than others.
Personally, I have grown weary of the moaners and complainers and the folks threatening to return to the dark side. (Windows) The general population falls on pretty much every scale someone can develop, as a bell curve, with the majority of folks in the middle and the minority on the fringes. In my estimation, of the population that would be attracted to its products, Apple shoots for the majority. The happy middle ground. The millions of folks for whom the MM works wonderfully.
But there will always be those who for whatever reason, and possibly not their fault, will fall on the fringes, where a product designed for the middle ground, doesn't work for them. And to them I say, adapt, and stop b*tching about it. Accept that something doesn't meet your need and customize by finding something that does, whether a different keyboard, a $19 mouse, external speakers, etc.

  • Mighty Mouse a Problem?

I bought my mighty mouse in the weeks after it came out because i accidentally broke my original mouse which came with by iMac rev.a. I have had a few problems with my mouse in the past weeks and wanted to know if anyone has had similar problems.
    1) the scroll button works great when going up page but hardly works when scrolling down.
    2) the side buttons are overly sensitve and after long uses, even if my hands are nowhere near them, the mouse triggers itune to open (the app i have programmed for the side buttons)
    Thanks MZAK21NYC

    A couple of thoughts:
    1) The side buttons are very sensitive. You only need to be near them to have them activate sometimes. I finally just disabled mine.
    2) Many people have fixed their Mighty mouse problems by simply un-plugging the mouse and plugging it back in.
    3) The rollers under the scroll-ball (or the ball itself) might be oily. I used to like track-ball mice until I found out how frequently they needed cleaned. The oil from your fingers would get on the ball, which would then coat the rollers. Then, the ball would simply slip over the roller instead of turning the rollers. So, you might need to clean the roller ball. I've done this several times using damp clothes on mine. Water, or rubbing alcohol should be fine. Just make sure it is a damp cloth, don't apply any liquid directly to the mouse. And, roll the ball with the damp cloth in all directions. It may take some time to get it all clean this way. It's better when you can open things up and get it clean from the inside.
If none of the above works, then contact Apple and get the mouse replaced.

  • YES... the wireless mighty mouse is here!

    I rate it 10 out of 10
I just got it today... best mouse ever made for mac osx users. If you like wireless, then this is a must buy. I had the previous wireless mouse for a few years and this is much better. Same classic/clean look but with lots of functionality and buttons in it's sleak design. More comfortable to move around with it's lighter weight and very accurate laser pointer then the previous wireless version. Touch sensitivity is the coolest thing I've seen in a mouse and it makes working with not only the contextual menu a breeze (right mouse click), but also your widgets and expose. Definately check it out!

Well I'm already on my second mighty mouse in a year, the first one got dissected because the scroll pea rollers got clogged, so I went back to my original one button mouse which has worked flawlessly for years.
I then bought a iMac as a gift and it came with a MM, I just couldn't bare to inflict them with this mouse with all it's complications and problems. So I took it and gave them my original one button mouse.
Now it's been a few months later and my MM is failing, the scroll pea is malfunctioning again. I clean it with rubbing alcohol, but it doesn't seem to work all the time.
I'm looking to replace this mouse with a third party option that will work reliably and consistently for years on end, like Apple mice used to be.
It's a shame, because I have a uniform Apple setup and now I have to use some off brand and inconsistent product.
By the way the scroll pea doesn't give you true diagonal scrolling, it can't, there is only a set of four rollers inside, not 8, so you only get traction in one direction at a time.
Also one has to lift their left finger off the mouse to do a right click, one can't do both a left click and a right click at the same time, or hold one down and let off the other like regular mice.

  • Trouble with Mighty Mouse and iMac

Something weird happened today. I moved my iMac to my fiance's home carefully packing it up in the box it came in. After unpacking and setting it back up, I got these audio "bleeps"(the noise the the computer makes when you press a button that doesn't execute anything). Problem is, this happens even when I scroll around the display. I intially thought that something was wrong with the mouse (or else a key was depressed on my keyboard-which it wasn't), so I changed to another 3rd party mouse. No bleeps coming from the iMac. So just for curiousity, I plugged the mighty mouse into my Macbook. NO NOISE. Now I'm wondering what the heck is up? Why does my iMac react to my mouse this way while my Macbook has no issues? Why does the iMac work fine with a non-Apple USB mouse? The might mouse came with the iMac and is not the wireless one. it worked fine up until this afternoon.
    Any suggestions???

okay so I bought another MM at Best Buy. Brought it to my house and it worked fine with my Macbook. So i go to my fiance's house where I have set up my iMac 17". Lo and behold I STILL GET THE BLEEPS. What's more, the mouse makes a physical clicking noise- not through the computer but on the MM itself. ***??? So I start trouble shooting. I unplug all of my HDs and music peripherals. The MM still makes the clicking noise and keeps trying to execute things on the desktop even when I'm not pressing the front area. Then I get the idea to take the iMac downstairs as I recall that I used my initial MM on my Macbook in the kitchen and it worked fine. NO PROBLEMS AT ALL. So what in the **** is going on here? My MM is NOT wireless so why is it that ALL of the power outlets on the 2nd floor of my fiance's place screw with the MM?
Is there something on the iMac that I need to change in terms of power handling so it wont be so damned sensitive. mind you, this problem also occurs when using the MM and MAcbook upstairs. What gives???
I would really appreciate some clarification as to what this might be? RF noise?
I' come from many years of being a PC and chasing down problems but this has got me stumped!

  • Wireless Mighty Mouse won't work properly with MacBook/tech support stumped

Hi. First post. Anyone heard of this problem? Appears to be location-sensitive. Problem described below, but first, short background...
Just bought entire Mac system after decades in corporate world with PC. Believed the TV ads that it would be simple. Already have been back to Mac store 6 times and have spent roughly 7 hours on phone with help line. Mac store even replaced Macbook entirely in case it was faulty logic board/Bluetooth circuit -- didn't help. Also, problem doesn't happen in store. So, to get to the point:
Wireless Mighty Mouse doesn't work properly when hooked up to Macbook -- herky-jerky, slow, unresponsive, sluggish, imprecise, intermittently better/worse. Went through a few Mighty Mouses and finally gave up; now using hardwire mouse and there's no problem. But before I return Mighty Mouse for refund, would like to see if there's a solution b/c I'd prefer wireless.
System is the latest little souped-up Macbook, 23" HD Cinema external monitor, external wireless Apple keyboard (which works fine), wireless Mighty Mouse (the culprit), Airport Express, HP printer. All brand new from local Mac store (Fifth Avenue, New York)... where the Genius counter folks have given up. I'm not convinced they believe me because (a) the problem doesn't occur there, and (b) after a couple of new Mighty Mouses, they finally just gave me a new Macbook to make me go away... but after going through the whole system setup once again, same problem. Have tried many different mousepads, BTW.
Tried all the stuff phone tech support suggested -- removing/installing/reinstalling software, etc. Airport works fine; using modem and printer connections there. Bluetooth works fine with keyboard. I've scouted around for intefering devices; even unplugged electrostatic loudspeakers and old tubed amps in living room (concrete wall separates rooms), unplugged hifi in same room, etc. On 40th floor of Manhattan hi-rise; concrete walls between neighbors. Have never had interference before with anything; previous PC system worked fine with Microsoft wireless (optical) mouse.
This is no longer urgent because hardwired Apple mouse works well. It's just mysterious.
    Any thoughts?
Other than that, I like the Mac environment so far. Fifth Avenue store is cool, also, because it's open 24/7.

Hey, thanks! That was fast. I'm impressed by the Mac community.
This program helped my hardwired mouse, actually, and did give me wider parameters on the wireless mouse, but it didn't correct the herky-jerky/sluggishness -- actually amplified those problems.
