Mighty Mouse Trackball won't track

I have a Mighty Mouse whose trackball all of a sudden won’t track ”UP“… down YES but UP No!
This Mouse worked just fine for about 6 months, then no UP.
How Come???
Model Number: A1152
P/N: KY556018MVU3MC
Is there any way of cleaning them inside without doing any damage? How do you get them open?

Re: Mighty Mouse Trackball won’t track… Now it does!!!!! and just fine.
What I did was to get some ”Electrical Contact Cleaner“ and spray some directly inside the mouse by spraying past the little mouse ball on top. Upside down, right side up, tilting in all directions and turning the ball back and forth vigorously. Well low and behold it started to move the pointer in both directions. Slowly at first then with more and more responsiveness the pointer came back to life. Then it quit for awhile! This I have determined to be caused by excess cleaner making the rollers a little slippery. But in 5 minutes the excess fluid had evaporated and the mouse now works perfectly! End of story except to quote the ”Electrical Contact Cleaner“ label. It reads as follows…,Removes oil & other films from electrical contacts, connectors & switches. Leaves no residue. Safe on most plastics. End of quote.
So there you have it. Thanks to all who responded and I hope this helps the rest of you who are having trouble with your mouse balls.

  • Mighty Mouse scroll won't go down

Out of no where I can't scroll down on my mighty mouse, only up. Any ideas how to fix this, any ideas on how this could have happened?

    Tyler,
The Mighty Mouse is tempermental and I have no clue why ours acts the same way but it goes back to normal on a restart. You have posted a question about one of Apple's newest products in the old folks home of the Apple Discussions.
    Posting here for hardware:
    http://discussions.apple.com/category.jspa?categoryID=108
    and here for software:
    http://discussions.apple.com/category.jspa?categoryID=160
will give you greater exposure for more precise answers. I am certain that it is software related becuse our mini, your G5 and Psyko's G5 all exhibit the same behavior.
Good luck and thanks for visiting us old guys! : )

  • Brand New Mighty Mouse does everything but track please help

    Pairs up nice and quick...
    Scroll ball works fine...
Right and left click are a go....
but it will not track, at all, not an inch
have had this less than two months and only have used it a few times
I reset my SMC and my PRAM still nothing
    I changed the batteries
tried it on a white piece of paper
    please help
also when its paired, the "bluetooth" pane of Keyboard/mice with the battery level meters is blank.
    thanks!

    Hello again:
I want to be sure we are on the same page. Go to system preferences>Bluetooth. Is the only entry your mouse? Go to system preferences>keyboard & mouse>bluetooth. Is your mouse the only entry?
If that all appears normal, try a couple of things (I am fishing a bit):
Go to your home folder (~library>preferences) and trash:
    com.apple.systempreferences.plist
    com.apple.bezelservices.plist
Then go to MacintoshHD>library>preferences and trash:
    com.apple.bezelservices.plist
Then restart and see if that helps.
Next, I would reset the PRAM:

  • Cleaning a Mighty Mouse

Currently I use a Mighty Mouse but recently the track ball on the top has stopped working in one direction and this is most probably due to dirt accumulation in the mouse. Anyone have an idea how to open the mouse to clean it? Thanx.

The Apple Store (Genius Bar) told me to get a hard and flat surface, and cover it with a lint free thin (preferably light-coloured) cloth.
Then "rub quickly (but carefully! with gentle pressure) running on the trackball from side to side, up and down"
The cloth will then show any debris from underneath the trackball that is left.
Note, I personally think that moisturiser on the hands might impede the life of the trackball-mechanism (due to oils that deteriorate the rubber ball).
    Hope that helps

  • Cleaning your mighty mouse

dont where to post this, there is no place to post questions on mouse cleaning. i need to open my mighty mouse to clean the track ball. i tried everything the support page said , upside down wiping wife link free cloth cleaning ball. nothing works, i need to open it, why doesnt apple have it so you can open this stupid thing? install they want you to buy a new mighty mouse for 50.00. this is stupid.

Dust, dirt, and such are apt to getting in there. Unplug the mouse, and with a damp cloth, rub up and down, pressing down firmly on the track ball 10-15 times. Repeat side to side, making sure to apply some pressure. This works every time for me when the mouse is acting up or not operating properly.
I have to do this about every other month. Kind of a design flaw with the Mighty Mouse, though I love it and put up with it.

  • Mighty Mouse humbled by a little scroll , etc

Hi - I have practiced due diligence i.e. continually cleaning the tiny
Mighty Mouse Scroll Wheel with a relentless vigour suitable for
cheery endings . But no , this has not spared me the reliving of
balky or dodgy scrollery . Yes the relentless scrollery of which
I speak is more of the lack of it than an overabundance of it .
So despite serious devotion my Mighty Mouse Scrolling wheel
has left most motion to elbow grease technology . The remnants
of up and side ways are testimony to a yesterday which if memory
serves included down for a starter . What relief is there for scrolling
down the page when mysterious acts reduce my Mighty
Mouse ? I am willing to thank anybody who is possessed of insight

    Frederick, I share your pain.
After a couple of weeks, my Mighty Mouse trackball would only work to scroll down pages, not up (and I rarely need to scroll sideways).
One shouldn't have to clean the trackball every day in order to coax it to do its job. Suggestions that users can just use their keyboards to navigate pages are the products of pure idiocy, the type that Apple acolytes are inevitably forced to deploy when trying to make Apple's dire attentiveness to practical matters seem acceptable; the fault being placed with users, rather than products that fail to execute the basic tasks for which they were made.
Don't get me wrong, the Might Mouse is aesthetically divine and I loved it when I first got it. Well, that was until week two when the trackball packed in. A wasted $60 that could have been better spent on the visually hideous but practically superb Logitech mouse.
Oh well, life with Apple continues (just about).

  • Mighty Mouse Won't Scroll Down - Solution

My iMac's mighty mouse wouldn't scroll down even after furious cleaning with a damp cloth and all that this discussion site advised.
I took the mouse into the new Cabot Circus Apple Store here in Bristol, UK. Five minutes later I was out again with a fully restored mighty mouse scroll ball.
The 'genius' used a isopropyl alcohol Prep Pad, as used by your doctor to sterile your arm before using a hypodermic needle. You can probably buy these down your local Chemists/Pharmacy. He gave me a strip of these sachets marked "Medium - Alcohol Prep Pad" manufactured by Dynarex Corporation. They seem to be selling for about £1.25 for 200. Cheap as chips even in this day and age.
    http://www.quickmedical.com/dynarex/disposable-wipes/alcohol-wipes.html
He then advised me to clean my mouse this way once a week to keep it in tip-top condition.
I'm sure I read somewhere that one wasn't supposed to use anything other than a damp cloth on these devices. Oh well, there you go.
Hope this helps anyone else who have found their mouse tracker ball has stopped working.

I think you have missed the point.
Try asking yourself, what would you do if rubbing your mouse on paper was no longer enough? That's the situation I was in.

  • Mighty Mouse Tracking Ball

The tracking ball on my Mighty Mouse works side-to-side and up, but not down. It feels as though there's some debris in the way preventing it from letting me scroll down.
Is there a way to clean it with breaking it?
Can I take it apart safely?
Any reponses would be greatly appreciated.

    Stephen,
This has a tendency to happen a lot---for some reason it attracts dirt like anything.
Just simply get a damp, lint-free fabric and rub it vigorously on the scroll button, making sure you let it roll freely as you do so (to get the entire ball on all sides)---right side up first, so you can see the smudge building up on the sides where the button meets the rest of the casing. You will see some particles get trapped in this a lot. Scrape off all the gook from there...
Let it rest for a minute or two, to completely dry it from the dampness caused by the fabric, and then turn it upside down while rolling the button to free any other remaining residue...

  • Mighty Mouse track ball button

I have been using Snow Leopard for a while and one of the things that I like the most is that I can choose what I want to see in my screen when I move my cursor to the lower right or left corner.
I have it set up as to SHOW ALL WINDOWS if I move my cursor to the lower right corner, well after I moved to LION that is no loger an option, instead of showing all windows open all it shows are the open windows open of the same application only, How can I set it up the way it was before, is there like a script or something.
also can it be set up so when I click the tracking ball on my Might Mouse to show ALL windows and not just the program windows?

I've read all the posting about this..in recent months I've been cleaning the track ball 6,7,8,9....times every day. I had planned to buy a wireless Mighty Mouse but not now, it'd be cheaper to sit in front of my Mac bashing my testicles with a mallet for the same effect. Apple, this is an utter design disaster. Like Joachim says, why not a mouse we can open and clean easily, or a larger, more robust track ball mechanism? I'm off to but a mouse by anyone but Apple...

  • Mighty Mouse won't scroll

None of the answers to this topic solved my problem. All of a sudden my bluetooth mighty mouse won't scroll. I can set it to 360 degrees and it will scroll horizontally. But it won't scroll horizontally or vertically if I set it to both. Help!

    Have you tried resetting bluetooth?
I have been having the same problem since nearly as long as I've had my mighty mouse, and cleaning it never solved the problem.
I just called apple and got them to send me out a new one, but before they did they told me to do this.
Turn off your Mac, removed the power and battery and hold down the power button for 5 seconds. Then turn it back on, but while you turn it back on hold down the altcmnd+RP buttons together. You will hear it ching two times as it turns on, let go after the second ching. This apparently resets the bluetooth and it fixed my mouse, it now works perfectly.
I'd recommend taking the advise of an apple technical advisor first before trying this, I have a MacBook from last year and that's what i did.

  • Mighty Mouse won't scroll in Stickies application

Can anyone tell me if there's a way to get a Mighty Mouse to scroll text inside a Stickie note? My Logitech wireless mouse does it, but when the batteries die I have to use my (wired) Mighty Mouse and it seems to scroll in all applications EXCEPT Stickies (G5 Quad). Even on my wife's G4 PowerBook, her wireless M.Mouse won't scroll in a Stickie note. It seems odd that any 3rd party mice will but the M.Mouse won't. Am I missing something?

Doesn't look like you're missing anything at all, strange indeed though!

  • Solution to Dirty Trackball on Mighty Mouse -- NO DISASSEMBLY REQUIRED!

I too have been plagued by the dirty trackball on the Apple Wireless Mighty Mouse. Although I love the mouse, cleaning the trackball as per Apple's instructions had done nothing. I have found a simple way to remove the lint/dirt etc... from inside the trackball WITHOUT disassembly of the mouse!
First, clean the mouse and trackball as according to Apple's instructions.
Next, take a piece of bright white paper, turn the mouse upside down on it, firmly press down on the ball, and vigorously run the mouse quickly up and down, left and right, AND in circles over the paper. After a while (it took me about 1-2 minutes), the lint and dirt that's been building up will break free of the sensors and when you take the mouse off the paper, you'll see everything that you cleaned on the paper -- and the scroll ball will work just like new.
I finished by cleaning it again with a damp, lent-free cloth.
Let me know how this works for you!

I've been lucky so far and only had to blast it with compressed co2. It's worked for me twice.

  • HT2845 why doesn't my mighty mouse track ball scroll up or down vertically?

why doesn't my mighty mouse track ball scroll up or down vertically?

    Hi:
New ones are not that expensive, but I would try running it up and down (vigorously) on microfiber cloth or a towel or something.
If that does not fix it...yes I would buy a new one.  I like wireless ones anyway

  • Wired vs wireless Mighty Mouse tracking

Has anyone else found that the wireless Mighty Mouse has different tracking or acceleration compared to the wired version? It feels as if it has some acceleration applied that I can't dial out using USB Overdrive, or that it has a slight dead zone or something when making very slow or small movements.

Yes I did install the software. I'm pretty sure I'm only using one finger. I can't see any perceptible difference between the way I'm using the wired and the wireless versions. Maybe the wired version is less sensitive. Also there is big difference in the weight of the two. The wireless is heavier (due to the batteries I imagine) and the wired seems downright feather light compared to it.
    But thanks for the feedback
