Miglia tvmini?

I have a 1.83 ghz macbook pro and i have been looking for a tv tuner to use with it, and I was considering buying miglia's tvmini. Although I'm not sure on how well it will work. So i would like to hear what people think of this product and if its reliable or not?

I have a Miglia TVMini HD which works very nicely on my (2ghz) MBP.
Only issue is the quality of the content... so i don't watch much TV.
The EyeTV software (include) works very well especially w.r.t.

  • Can't setup Miglia TVMini

I just got the Miglia TVMini, and following the setup assistant, I can't get past
'now please connect the unit to your mac via the usb cable supplied'
and then nothing happens. The 'next' button never lights up.
I have installed the EyeTv 2.1 update.
    anyone?

    I got this from Elgato:
"Thank you for contacting Elgato Systems.
The problem you're having with the TVMini is very unusual.
To begin with, download EyeTV 2.1 again - the software changed in the past few days.
    http://www.elgato.com/downloads/eyetv21update.dmg
When connected, does the light appear on the TVMini unit?
Start up the System Profiler for OS X (in the Applications/Utilities). Does the TVMini appear in the USB section?
Save the System Profiler report as XML. Compress and send that file to me.
If you unplug and replug the TVMini to the USB bus, does that help?
Try EyeTV on all of your other USB 2.0 ports, with another USB 2.0 cable, and try it with other USB devices detached. There might be a fault with the USB connection, or some sort of conflict with another device. If you're using a portable, then also try it while plugged into a wall outlet, instead of using battery power. This will ensure that EyeTV is getting enough power over the USB. If you're using a USB hub, make sure that it's self-powered by an AC adaptor.
On the bottom of the TVMini hardware is a serial number. Please let me know what that is.
If you haven't already, try to restart your Mac, to see if that helps.
Using this information, I'll work to find a solution for you."
I tried all the suggestions, but no change. The light on the TVMini unit does not illuminate - though it does get warm after being connected for a while.
It appears in the system profiler under usb only as
    vend_device:
    Version: 0.00
    Bus Power (mA): 500
    Speed: Up to 480 Mb/sec
    Product ID: 0x022a
    Vendor ID: 0x14aa
I don't have another USB2 cable, but if I plug the unit directly into the usb plug it makes no difference. It's the same on the other usb plug, and the mac is plugged into the mains power supply. Other devices work fine through the usb - though I am unsure whether they are usb1 or usb2.

  • Miglia TVMini HD vs EyeTV 250

Has anyone used either of these products? I am looking for something with good picture quality and I have digital cable provided by Cox Communications, any pro's and con's of either product?

    Hello,
I have the Miglia Mini (not HD) but back when I bought mine it came with Elgato's EyeTV software. The Miglia devices no longer come with the outstanding EyeTV application they come with Miglia's own package, which although I haven't used I suspect is not as well refined. If I were buying again tomorrow I would be going for the EyeTV250. It's feature set plus the features in EyeTV 2.5 (software) make it a very worthy purchase.
Watching/recording TV would take about 40% of a 1.25GHz G4 processor. On a 2.8GHz Intel Core 2 Extreme it takes around 25% of one of the cores to do the same.
The Miglia turned my iMac G4 20" into our main TV something the iMac 24" has taken over from very nicely.
    cheers

  • Miglia TVmini with EyeTV 2.0 - DTT

I've read about this and am tempted to get one for uni. However, i was wondering if anyone knew if the usb adapter had an areil port that a games console could be plugged into, and if it does has anyone tried it? It would save me taking a tv to uni just to play my PS2. Anyone who can help i'd really appreciate it

Have had the same problems. At home with either the bundled aerial or old tv aerial via a v.old signal booster i get most of the channels bar the major terrestrials. Only BBC4 and Men & Motors.
At work (At the top of a hill) Same again though the tuner does find BBC's 1 and 2. and News 24. (Won't display them though)
That's with 100% Signal and Quality.
Did you notice how the signal readout gives exactly the same readings every time you tune? Looks like a lack of signal from BBC and ITV. Going out to buy amplified aerial.
I Understand that it's very small. but all the channels the old freeview box had trouble with seem to get perfect reception on the TV Mini (Seven more channels and i could give away a lot of electronics)

  • Miglia TV and HD TV

This may seem like a really dumb question but i'm going to ask it anyway.
I'm thinking of buying a Miglia TVMini for the (intel) Mac Mini. It says on the blurb that this broadcasts in high definition and i have my mac plugged in to an HD TV. However, i have plugged the mini into the VGA input on the TV using a DVI to VGA cable. Would i have to connect the mini to the HDMI input on my TV for it to be High definition?

    Hi kick bags ***,
It says on the blurb that this broadcasts in high definition and i have my mac plugged in to an HD TV.
This is incorrect, the miglia device does not broadcast anything. It receives content and captures TV content. It stores it on your hard drive in lossless file in the format the TV provider was broadcasting in, this is usually mpeg2.
However it will only recieve HD if there is a HD broadcast available and currently the BBC, ITV C4 and C5 are only trialing HD broadcasts in London. They are broadcasting the HD content in h.264 (mpeg4) something which the TVmini cannot receive as this is a limitation in they eyetv software.
Would i have to connect the mini to the HDMI input on my TV for it to be High definition?
    No.
The Tv mini will only receive Free to Air broadcasts and I doubt very much the BBC etc will ever broadcast encrypted content.
so once the content is captured you can connect your mini to any display via vga, dvi or hdmi and.
You only need to connect an HD receiver to your HDMI connection if you are watching encrypted content, eg sky HD.

  • Miglia TVMicro?

Does anyone know if i can use a Miglia TVMicro with a powered USB 2.0 PCMCIA card? If not, then does anyone know of any good firewire/PCMCIA tv tuner altenatives? Thanks!
    -Sean

I've used my Miglia TVMini througha USB2.0 PCMCIA card but it had to have the PSU connected to the card.
Try the EyeTV 250 (USB1 compatible) or the EyeTV 410 (Firewire).

  • PPC Mac mini + Apple remote

Hi - I've got a PPC mac mini and use it mainly with EyeTV 2.3 / Miglia TVMini. I managed to get Front Row installed on it, and it sort of works ok with the Miglia remote.
Having read that EyeTV now supports the Apple remote, I went and got one - to find that it doesn't work. Presumably EyeTV only supports it if the mini has the internal inrared sensor. Which mine doesn't. (Although the TVMini appears to pick up the Apple remote signal, just not do anything with it.)
Aside from the fact that I'd be shelling out another £25 to get a £19 remote working, would connecting an iPod dock with built-in infrared allow me to control front row via the Apple remote? Ie will OS X recognise it as a built-in infrared sensor - which the remote seems to want?
    Cheers

  • A Mac Mini PVR

I recently purchaed a Core Duo Mac Mini with 80 GB HDD and 2 GB RAM. One of the reasons I wanted a dual-core processor was because I wanted to watch and record television on my mac. I also purchased a 160GB Lacie Mini Firewire HD with the same thought. So, I have been doing some research, and the following are the only devices I could find that would provide a relatively painless TV-watching experience on the Mac:
    (1) Miglia TVMicro ($99) - Only Analog, No Digital, Software encoding
    (2) Miglia TVMini HD ($249) - Only Digital (ATSC/ClearQAM), No Analog, No encoding (either software or hardware) - records unmodified signal
    (3) EyeTV Hybrid ($149) - Digital (ATSC) and Analog, No encoding - signal is recorded as is, Provides 3 quality presets.
    (4) EyeTV 250 ($199) - Only Analog, No Digital, Hardware encoding. Provides 7 quality presets.
The only channels I am interested in watching are the regular OTA local channels here in the US. So, here are my questions:
    (1) My regular Radio Shack analog provides very poor quality analog channels so I am assuming that if i want to watch local channels in good quality, my only option is to watch them in HD ?
    (2) Am I correct to infer from the above data that there is no device that can receive such HD broadcasts but do the encoding/compression in hardware instead of taxing my mac's CPUs ?
    (3) What kind of CPU loads are we talking about here ? I imagine my most frequent use of such a device being the TV running in a small window on my 20" LCD while I work. Is that easily handled by the Core Duo Mac Mini ?
    (4) What are the file sizes like for these devices ? How much space would a 1-hour HD show take ? Since I would mostly be recording just to watch them and then delete them, I would imagine that the lowest quality would suffice for my purposes ?
If you have one or many of these devices, please weigh in with your experiences. Or if you have found a way to watch TV on the mac with a different setup, please feel free to enlighten me in that case as well.
    Thanks.

Well, this isn't the answer you are looking for I think, but I'd thought I'd throw it out as an option.
I've been using a Mac as a PVR for quite some time. This is a bit more cumbersome, because it's not exactly an all in one solution. I record straight from my cable box via firewire. I use iRecord to capture the streaming data, and IRecord has some good basic functionality including able to switch channels on the cable box and basic event recording (weekly, weekdays, daily, etc.).
I use VLC to playback the streamed content, and the best part is that I can watch a current recording as well. I suppose the actual best part was that it didn't really cost me more money (I could have been just as content by paying $10/month for PVR functionality on my cable box). Oh, and I use MPEG Streamclip to archive any recordings in h264 format. Another downside, I can't record any encrypted programming (not sure about paid Premium channels yet though)
So basically, iRecord sets up all the recordings, and I use VLC to watch it. Of course the best part about this setup is that there is no taxing CPU task of compressing video since it's just capturing streaming data. Only taxing part really is watching it, and especially with HD, I really had to upgrade to an intel Mac Mini. My G4 Powerbook was getting way overworked trying to playback any HD recordings.
Otherwise, EyeTV Hybrid is the best bet.

  • IMac to component HDTV?

Situation: I hate Comcast. I have a new LCD HDTV that has a built in HD tuner and now I can pick up all my local HD channels with only basic cable! Score! $14.99/mo! Sweet. NOW HERE IS THE ISSUE: If I do this, I will not be able to pick up HD on my old Mitsubishi 1080i HDTV (set up in my home theater, no HD/digital tuner and has component video input only).
I plan on putting Miglia TVmini HD on my iMac core 2 to pick up the HDTV, very nice and easy! I am thinking, instead of buying a stand-alone HDTV tuner for the Mitsubishi, I would hook my iMac to it as a secondary display. HOW would I make a video connection from the iMac to the Component video of the Mitsu? Second Q, what about the audio for my bose system? Any thoughts?????

    Hi kwandrews,
Connecting your iMac to your TV shouldn't be a problem.
You need a mini DVI > DVI adapter (http://store.apple.com/1-800-MY-APPLE/WebObjects/AppleStore.woa/wa/RSLID?mco=6C0 4E07A&nplm=M9321G%2FB), a DVI > Component adapter (like this: http://sewelldirect.com/dvivideoadapter.asp) and a Component video cable (like this: http://store.apple.com/1-800-MY-APPLE/WebObjects/AppleStore.woa/wa/RSLID?mco=149 730D6&nplm=TL953LL%2FA).
I am unshure of what resolutions you will be able to feed your TV with, however. Maybe someone else has a similar setup that can share more info.
Audio isn't a problem either. Your iMac has a analog/digital combined audio output. Depending on wether your Bose system can take a digital toslink or an analog signal, you could use this: http://store.apple.com/1-800-MY-APPLE/WebObjects/AppleStore.woa/wa/RSLID?mco=6C0 4E099&nplm=TA968LL%2FA or any minijack > RCA cable, really. Analog cables won't support surround sound, though.
    Hope this helps!

  • Widescreen Issues

    Hi folks
I'm running Quicktime 7.1 Pro and a Miglia TVMini on a Mac Mini with a widescreen display. Since i upgraded to the current version of quicktime all 16:9 programmes or 16:9 QT files are now letterboxed. (Auto Aspect on the TVMini is just pure comedy now)
The letterboxing would be fine on a 4:3 display, but no good on this one. Outside of cropping the video does anyone have a solution that doesn't involve constant fiddling?
    Thanks in advance
    D

I may be stating the obvious, if so, I apologise, it's all I can think of > Maybe your QT setting are messed up, go to "View Movie Properties" (option+j), click on Video Track and look at the visual settings. It will tell you the movies actual size and display size, as well as giving you the option to "preserve aspect ratio" Perhaps tweaking some of these settings will do the trick. You'll need to save the movie after making changes in this way, in order to keep the prefs.
    Hope this helps!

  • Macbook Pro TV Tuner & Battery Management

Just wondering (and waiting for my MBP to arrive) if anyone knows a TV Tuner that is Universal for the MBP...I've been looking at the Miglia TVMini but I'm not sure if the software is Universal. Does anyone have this on their MBP? What's it like? How's the freeview reception? Any screenshots?
Another thing...been looking in the forum for info on how to manage the battery...with my current laptop I just take the laptop without the charger when I'm out and as soon as I get home I plug it in for about 7-8 hours most days. 2 years later and the battery doesn't last long at all. Does the charger on the MBP stop charging the MBP at 100%? Can you keep the charger in without ruining or reducing the life of the battery, and then take it out when you want?

Elgato's eyeTV 1.8.5 will work under Rosetta and therefore in theory should work with your MBP.
They are working on a Universal version of eyeTV 2.0.
I use an eyeTV 410 with my PowerMac (and have used the DTT with my PowerBook).
If you have a decent aerial then you can get excellent reception, this is a screen shot of a film recorded from Channel 4.

    Yes
However, just using a battery will cause the same symptoms you experience with your current laptop.

  • Help!  looking for internet camera compatible with Mac

I need help! I purchased a Mac recently and so far I am very happy with it. However, we just had a baby and I'd like to see and hear my baby from my computer at work. At work we use PCs and at home we havea iBook G4. I bought a D-link wireless G internet camera, the DCS-950G, but I could not install it because it requires you to have a PC for initial installation. I've looked around the web but I've been unable to find an internet camera that works with the Mac. I am desperate and frustrated! Does aynone know of an wireless internet camera that works with the Mac? I'd greatly appreciate any help you can provide. Thanks.

    Hello B Real Brad
You do not say which DV camcorder you have. The exact answers to your questions depend upon your camcorder's features and user guide instructions. If you experience problems when you try your camcorder, check your camcorder's users guide instructions. That having been said, here are the answers to your posted questions:> Do I need to have a firewire cable to successfully use it through iChat ...
Firewire will be easiest. If you have a Firewire cable to download your DV Video to iMovie, that one will work fine.
... or can I use the normal usb cable?
Depending upon your camcorder, that may work with additional software and or hardware, but, if your camcorder offers it, Firewire will me much easier.
    .. is the quality ... better using a DV camcorder ... ?
Usually. This depends on which camcorder you compare with which webcam.
Some people like the image quality of their camcorders better. See John Kennedy's "Cameras and Image Quality", the Sat - October 30, 2004, blog for a comparison. (John's is a very high quality camcorder.)
See this link for my reasons for using a webcam when I do not need portability or highest possible quality. Some of the reasons may be of interest to you.For specifics on how to get going, see my recent response to Tony Keogh. Although Tony asks specifically about a particular Sony model, the specific suggestions I made there should apply to your camcorder, too.
If the above do not get you going, I suggest that you start your own topic and give as many specifics as possible about your system, your problem, and what you have already tried. Your questions deserve the individual attention they will get in a separate topic.
Here are a couple of other suggestions for your consideration:
    (1) I see from your other posts that you use Miglia TVMini. Be aware that some AV devices and third-party items can cause possible hardware or software conflicts with iChat.
    (2) Also, your system info shows that you are using 10.4.4. I suggest that you update to the latest available version of Tiger using the following method:- Repair permissions.
    - Then download and apply the Mac OS X 10.4.9 Combo Update (PPC).
    - Finish with another Permissions Repair. The latest Combo Update offers several additions and improvements over the older versions.

  • TV on my Mac

There's been a few posts about what you can get to run TV on your Mac but what I was wondering is what product is the best with regards to using the least amount of CPU? I like having the TV on in the background on my macbook whilst working on the Apple Display. I've been looking at the Miglia TVMINI Express and the eyeTV Diversity.
    Any ideas?

I picked up a Slingbox not too long ago from Office Depot because they were on clearance and I watch cable TV on my MB Pro via Slingplayer software. Image quality is spotty on certain channels but on others its rather nice. Nice thing is that you can set up the Slingbox so you can access it remotely and watch local cable even if you're halfway around the world.
Caveat: I checked the CPU usage and it's uses some power but I've never noticed any significant hit to overall performance.

  • Can't Get Local NBC Affiliate w/Miglia HD TVMini on Macbook

Anyone have any ideas why I can't access the local (Seattle, WA) NBC station (KING 5) with my Miglia HD TVMini on my Macbook?
    Otherwise, it works very well.
What stumps me is that the other stations I do get broadcast from about the same distance and from about the same location as the NBC station. So, it doesn't seem to be a matter of distance or direction.
I'm using the antenna that came with the product. I tried an indoor amplified one, and still no NBC.
    Can you help me troubleshoot?

OK, so I found the answer to my question.
You can add stations manually to get those stations that the Miglia/Eye TV2 software doesn't pick up through auto-tune.
To do that, however, you need to know the correct number for the digital broadcast for the station; it differs from the analogue broadcast station number. For example, what everyone knows as Channel 5 is channel 5 in analogue, but is a different station number for digital (even though when viewed in digital, it still says 5.)
I found the digital station information neatly advertised on the station's entry on wikipedia. I dialed that station number manually for digital reception and the Miglia found the station, and it worked.
