Migrant assistant - iMac froze upon file transfer complete

Upon completion of files, applications transfer, got a message both on MacBook Pro and iMac computers, being MacBook Pro my source and the iMac the destination ccomputer.
On both computers got the messag: ´Your information has been transfered succesfully´
However, when trying to view my files and all information, MOUSE AND KEYBOARD ARE NOT RESPONDING.
It is frozen and Not sure if I should a forced shut down by pressing the power button for a few seconds???
Any thoughts
Thanks

Thanks Don.
Uopn further thinking, There may be a conflict because on both computers I have created a user with the same name.
I remember when I first turned on the new iMac computer, it prompted me for migrant assistant and I skipped that step since I did not have an ethernet cable then.
Next I created the user with the same name as my MacBook Pro,
Next updated the iMac with the latest Mac OS X Version 10.7.5
and after that is when I started with migrant assistant through all the steps until the iMac mouse froze.
So I will follow your advise.
Thanks.

  • B2B pulling file before file transfer complete

When we FTP into the polling directory, B2B seems to pull the file prior to the transfer completing.
Even if we increase the polling time, there is still the chance that we will still be transfering when the B2B tries to pull the file.
Is there a way to lock the file prior to the transfer completing?

    Hi Anuj,
We are also facing same issue. I also tried giving minimum age as 300000. But Oracle B2B is picking up before entire file is transferred. After giving minimum age property in transport, we saw errors such as

I observe that LastModifiedTime is always set to Thu Jan 01 00:59:59 GMT 1970 and hence Oracle B2B is picking up the message as soon as its transfered. Is there any workaround for this?

  • HELP! brand new iMac froze during firewire transfer and won't start!!!

During my setup for my brand new iMac I follwed the directions and connected my iBook via firewire to transfer my files. I noticed after a while that my iMac was frozen on "45 minutes remaining" and the blue line wasn't wavering a bit, and after over half an hour it hadn't moved. I powered off the iBook, and still nothing happened to the iMac screen--it remained frozen. I went to the guidebook and nothing seemed to work, so I powered off and on again, only to get a flashing question mark. All this and I just bought the darn thing tonight!
Help! Anyone know what happened and more importantly how to fix it?
    Thanks.
    Lindsay

it sounds like the iBook went to sleep during the transfer or at least it's hard drive spun down.
what you need to know is hope that simply booting from your install DVD will let you repair the iMac's hard drive. You could also try booting holding down the Command S keys on startup and when you get to the Single User Mode command line prompt follow the directions there for running fsck to repair your hard drive.
Do you have a FW hard drive? Can you copy files from iBook to FW and then from there to iMac?
And, it is always nice to have a FW emergency/backup hard drive. The iMac needs a different partition scheme to be bootable from FW than the iBook does, but you can create the proper partition type etc from a Tiger Installer and put OS X on FireWire, then see if you can backup and repair your iMac's hard drive.
MicroMat's TechTool Pro 4.5.1 is now shipping and is compatible, Universal Binary and bootable. Always good to have some 3rd party utility handy.
If you are just starting out, you probably don't have much if anything installed yet, so you may want to just erase your iMac drive and restore to what it was. That would be the easiest if Disk Utility won't repair it.
Instead of powering off the iBook, I would have tried to force quit whatever was running, like Migration Assistant.

  • Imac to MBA file transfer and cable type?

transferring files from imac 2011 macbook air 2012. What cable do i need and what is the best method? MBA has thunderbolt and imac has fire port.

You need to backup the iMac using Time Machine or create a bootable clone using either Super Duper or Carbon Copy Cloner. You will need an external HD to do this, you should have been backing up anyway and should consider yourself incredibly lucky you haven't lost any data. Backup isn't something that should be done it's somethat that MUST be done. You have lots of valuable data on your computer (music, photos, movies, financial information etc...) and without a backup plan you risk losing it completely if your computer has a HD crash!!!!!!!
Before you do anything else get yourself and external HD and backup your computer!! You should buy 2 EHD's one for the iMac and another for the new MBA.

  • File Copy Completion Notification Sound

Hey, i've just turned on my " play user interface sound effects " button in the System Preferences and I'd really like to find an app / utility that allows me to beef up my render notification and file transfer completion notification sounds / emails. Basically, I want to know when the computer has finished the tasks I've given it so i can know to come back to that machine and continue working. Often I'll be off doing some personal chores or on another computer watching tutorials and I really hate missing out on valuable work time.
I'm not really lookng for FTP or AFP support. I really just want to transfer ex: 120GB from X drive to Y drive via ESATA and know when it's done. If I can specify the sound file, that'd be fantastic. Additionally, SMS or Email would be heavenly.

For notification sound file apps, check on Macupdate and CNET Mac Download websites.

  • Powerbook to iMac file transfer

I just bought a new iMac, and I want to transfer my files from my Powerbook. My question is, will the old software, i.e. iLife 05 transfer also, or will just the files transfer?

Yes, it should be simple to just transfer files between the two Macs since they both have built-in Airport. However, I don't think that you can use the Migration Assistant for that, only with a Firewire connection with one computer in Target Disk mode. So you would be completely on your own in choosing what to transfer, no user account data, etc. But if all you want to do is transfer music, photos, movies, etc, it would be fine.

  • Migration Assistant File Transfer via Ethernet 20+ Hours?

I have been trying to transfer all my files from my old MBP mid-2010 to my new MBP late-2013. I have turned off the Air Port (Wi-Fi) on both computers and connected them directly (not through a router) with an Ethernet cable and a Thunderbolt-to-Ethernet adaptor. At the beginning of the process, Migration Assistant indicated an estimated time to completion of less than 2 hours. However, now, after more than three hours into the process, the estimated remaining time indicated is more than 20 hours. The total amount of data to be transferred was estimated by Migration Assistant at the beginning of the process to be approximately 290 GB.
Is it normal for such a transfer to take such a long time?
Should I stop the transfer operation and start from scratch?
Should I have run a Repair Permissions in Disk Utility on the old computer before starting the transfer (just in case)?
    What should I do now?
Thank you very much for your help.

If you have allowed file sharing in Sys Prefs/Sharing on the old Mac, and if you have chosen Bonjour computers for the Sidebar of Finder windows in the Finder's Preferences on the new Mac, then your old Mac should appear in the Sidebar under Shared. I find that this works best with two horizontal Finder windows, one above the other with both in Column View stretched out to 5 or 6 columns. Use one for browsing to locations on your new Mac and the other to browse to locations on the old Mac.
Highlight your old Mac's name in the Sidebar of one of the windows and in the 1st column you will see an icon for the Mac and under that a button that says Connect. Press the button and you are presented with a dialog box. Enter the long name for your user account on the old Mac and its password. You should be immediately connected to the old Mac and you will have full access to your user account. You can now browse to anywhere in your account and drag & drop things from one window to the same location on your new Mac in the other window. If your account on the old Mac is an admin account, you should also have full access to everything on both of the hard drives on the old Mac.
If by chance when you highlight the old Mac in the sidebar and you are already connected as Guest then the button will say Disconnect. Press it and disconnect the Guest account and then follow the steps above to connect to your user account.

If it won't startup in Safe Mode, then try Startup Manager or the Apple Hardware Test from your original Install Disc.

  • Setup Assistant fails during file transfer and loops back to the beginnig

I have a PPC G5 running 10.4.11 and just bought an Intel-based MacBook Pro. (I haven’t gotten it to fully start up yet, so I’m not sure about the OS.)
I've tried to use the Setup Assistant to migrate my files and applications from my desktop to the laptop, but when I get to the Transfer Files option, the Users, Applications Folder, and Files and Folders options never finish calculating. Everytime I hit Transfer, a black-and-white wheel appears for less than a second then disappears, and Setup Assistant loops back to the beginning, where I get the multilingual welcome messages and bad music. Or, if I do nothing and wait for the Transfer Files step to calculate, Setup Assistant still just loops back to the beginning.
I’ve tried the options for transferring from another Mac and from another volume. I’ve tried copying from the G5 in Target Disk Mode and tried copying from a cloned firewire hard drive. I’ve tried using the firewire 400 and 800 ports, different cables. I’ve run DiskWarrior on the G5 and the cloned disc to make sure no disc errors hung up the process. I tried booting into Safe Mode and following that protocol, though it seemed to address a different issue than the one I’m experiencing.
Any ideas about what I can do? I’d rather do this in Setup Assistant than Migration Assistant, and I really don’t relish the idea of reinstalling all the software I have on the G5 onto the MacBook Pro. (Logic, for example, takes forever to install.)
    Let me know!

Even if it's a demo, it's unlikely it's got 10.5 on it. Maybe 10.6. I've used the 10.6 SA from Leopard, which ran perfectly with no problems. As for MA, here's one way to go about it, if you can't finish with SA. (Thanks to MonkeyBoy at XYMer's)
If you choose to use the migration assistant after installing SL to migrate settings over from Tiger, it'll copy over all your data intact from Tiger, as well as use the same account names & passwords.
What I typically do is choose a dummy name during the installation, then use MA to import the "real" accounts from the old install. After I'm satisfied MA moved over the accounts properly (I've logged into them and used them for a few hours/days and generally feel satisfied with the lack of crashes and similarly "odd" events) then I delete the dummy account.

  • Firewire File Transfer Problem/  Dual Drive G4 to iMac

Bought a new iMac. My old G4 (OSX10.3.9) has two internal HDs (30Gb & 40GB <my startup>) but only 30Gb drive shows up in target mode. Can't mount 40 Gb drive on iMac desktop to do file transfer when G4 is in "Target" mode? Called Apple "help" and was told to connect FW cables with a "Powered FW hub". No luck! Only 30GB shows up (Disk 0) and 40Gb (Disk 1) doesn't mount! Any suggestions?
    Louie ([email protected])

    Mike and Karn
Thank you both for your helpful and knowledgeable suggestions. Earlier this afternoon, I took my G4 to a local Mac store where the tech fixed the "problem" in 5 minutes for NO CHARGE. He just moved jumpers making the hard drive I wanted to use as a "target" now readable and the other as the slave. I have busily been transferring stuff to my new iMac.
Too bad the "Applecare" telephone "tech" which I waited well over an hour to speak with a few days ago did not the simple and correct answer but instead told me to by a "powered firewire hub"!!
    Thanks, Louie

  • 8900 to imac bluetooth connection for file transfer

Hello,  I  have a brand new curve 8900 javelin and a new IMAC.  Both devices can see each other and I can manage to get a green connection light however it only lasts a few seconds and then disconnects.  Can someone please tell me how to overcome this problem?
    thank you

That's really weird, the different ways that the providers cripple the same phone. I do not need any plug-in for BT iSync but I can't do file transfer with BT or with USB (I do have a microSD card installed). Unfortunately, I have no use for iSync. I can also use the phone to provide Internet access for my Mac but the Mac is a desktop and a hardwired connection makes more sense.
The USB connection is really frustrating. Profiler knows that the phone is present and the phone knows that the Mac is present (the battery does charge) but otherwise it's as if it's not even connected.
I am able to put the card into a card reader and transfer files that way. I don't mind all that much but it's not easy getting the card out of the phone.
By the way, there are several RAZR versions. Is your "V3XX" the same phone as my "V3m?"

  • Fastest file transfer PC to iMac??

Pictures, Word docs, and music files are primary interest.  The iMac app via wifi transfer on home network is saying 15+ hours!
    Gotta be something faster...?

    a. what kind of wifi network?  802.11n or g between them?
    b. just how much stuff we talking about here?  a few megabytes, 100s of gigabytes, terabytes?
If connecting over a LAN on 802.11n, you should actually be getting pretty good speeds.  Unless you have something like fibrechannel cards in both machines, why not just let it copy overnight?  Who cares how long it takes if your sleeping while it does it

  • Used the file transfer software from Apple to move music and photos from PC to iMac and can't find the files on iMac even though it was "successful" any help?

Used the file transfer software from Apple to move music and photos to iMac.  After several hours it was "successful" but I can't locate it on the iMac.  Any ideas for the rookie?

The music should be in iTunes and your photos should be in iPhoto. What happens if you launch those applications?
    Best of luck.
