Migrate a Zone ?

Hi All,
Can one migrate a Zone from one system to another without halting the zone through Ops center?
Thanks,
Shawn

Hi Shawn,
Right now live migration of zones isn't supported in Solaris yet, so unfortunately you can't do it in Ops Center either. It can automate all the tasks for you (so moving a local zone from one physical system to another is point-and-click in your browser) but the zone will be halted while it's moved.

  • Live migration with zones

    Hi all,
I have been reading into making "SPARC Private Cloud" whitepapers with LDOM's from Oracle. One thing really pops out from the text which really confuses me:
    from Page 8 and 10:
"VMs may also be securely live migrated or automatically started or restarted across any servers in their respective pools. *Zones are cold migrated*"
"Secure live migration—Move domains off of servers that are undergoing planned maintenance. *Zones are cold-migrated*."
Does this really mean that if I have zones inside LDOM guest, I can live migrate the LDOM guests but not the zones? Hence zones will go down if I do this? If so, whats the reason behind this, its hard to grasp the idea that the OS itself can be live migrated, but not zones inside it that are using the same kernel, binaries etc from it....

Lumi, I'm pretty sure they are comparing LDOMs with zones on a standalone system (i.e. no LDOMs).
When you migrate a domain, everything the guest kernel is doing should emerge as it was before.
Migration might take a bit longer than for the GZ alone, since you're using more virtual memory.
To move an NGZ between standalone GZ's, you would indeed have to halt, detach, attach, and boot it.
But please don't take my word for it... feel free to try both methods for yourself. =-)
The only limitation for zones in LDOMs that I'm aware of: You cannot currently set elastic power policy.
Other than that, I don't see why you couldn't keep zones running inside your guest as it moves around.
    Hope that helps... -cheers, CSB

  • Migrating existing zones to ZoSS

    Hi,
I recently found http://www.oracle.com/technetwork/articles/servers-storage-admin/zones-on-shared-storage-1896088.html and now I want to migrate an existing zone (installed on a local tank zpool) to ZOSS (FC MPxIO LUN). How would I do that? I *do* want to keep existing settings + data...
    Thanks.
    Edit: Typo

    Hi Mohan,
If you go into Workshop, and choose "File->New->Portlet", you have several options for the technology. That list includes JSP, Struts, Page Flow, and JSF. If your J2EE application UI is implemented with one of those technologies, you can point the portlet to the starting page of the application (assumes your app UI is located within a Portal Web Project). Since WLP natively understands those technologies, it may be able to just bring in the application without modificaiton.
    Some caveats though:
    - the app is likely adding chrome, like a header, footer, menu, and navigation elements that won't render well within a portlet. That may need to be stripped off.
    - the JSP option is limited - it won't rewrite links within the JSP to be portal friendly like with the other technologies
    - the Portlet Developers guide has more information on each of the possibilities

  • MIgrating DNS zone

    Hi,
Sorry if this is a really silly question, I just need some clarification. I'm carrying out a project to migrate users/groups and everything else 'AD' from 1 forest into a target forest. There's a 2 way trust in place and I will be starting ADMT migration
    next week.
    My question is:
Obviously the source domain/forest has a DNS (AD intergrated) zone for 'domain1.com'.
In the target domain, we currently have a DNS forward set up for anything with 'servername.domain1.com' to forward requests to 'domain1.com' DNS servers.
As part of the migration process, I would like to export the zone containing all DNS records from 'domain1.com' to my target domain, and then switch off the forwarder, so the source domain's DNS is no longer needed.
What is the best way of doing this?
    Thanks
    Sarah

There should be no problem as long as there are not two servers up and running with the same configuration (When you migrate the DHCP, make sure that the old server is switched off after switching) and the DNS configuration is correct.

  • Unable to update zones after migrating from SRU13 to Solaris 11 Release

When attempting to migrate to 11-release, I ran into a bizarre problem when I began to migrate my zones to the new format. It would appear that there is an erroneous and hardcoded pkg publisher somewhere in the toolchain. During a zoneadm attach -u:

  • Any "Best Practice" regarding use of zfs in LDOM with zones

I have 3 different networks and I want to create a guest-domain for each of the three networks on the same control domain.
Inside each guest-domain, I want to create 3 zones.
To make it easy to handle growth and also make the zones more portable, I want to create a zpool inside each guest domain and then a zfs for each zoneroot.
By doing this I will be able to handle growth by adding vdisks to the zpool(in the guest domain) and also to migrate individual zones by using zfs send/receive.
In the "LDoms Community Cookbook", I found a description on how to use zfs clone in the control domain to decrease deploy time of new guest domains:
" You can use ZFS to very efficiently, easily and quickly, take a copy of a previously prepared "golden" boot disk for one domain and redeploy multiple copies of that image as a pre-installed boot disk for other domains."
I can see clear advantages in using zfs in both the control domain and the guest domain, but what is the downside?
I ends up with a kind of nested zfs where I create a zpool inside a zpool, the first in the control domain and the second inside a guest domain.
How is zfs caching handled, will I end up with a solution with performance problems and a lot of I/O overhead?
    Kindest,
    Tor

I'm not familiar with the Sybase agent code and you are correct, only 15.0.3 seems to be supported. I think we'd need a little more debug information to determine if there was a workaround. May be switching on *.info messages in syslogd.conf might get some more useful hints (no guarantee).
Unfortunately, I can't comment on if, or when, Sybase 15.5.x might be supported.

  • Booting a Zone from SAN?

I will give details of my case below:
    1. I have one critical server (T4-1 with Oracle Solaris 11.1) in production which boots from SAN & require DR.    (Server in PRODUCTION place)
    2. I have another same model server in DR Location which boots from Internal Disk and having small application running in Global Zone. (Server in DR Location)
My requirement is When Server in Production goes down which boots from SAN and in that scenario I want boot my zone in DR Location Server with the SAME SAN BOOT (which is being used by Production Server).
Is my requirement can be met, is that possible. If not please let me know other all possibilities with process and commands.

    Hi.
You can not use boot device from one server as  boot devvice of zone on another server.
You can migrate current producation server to zone or LDOM and use zone or LDOM migration.
Zone migration - via export/import zone.

  • How can i propagate Zoning from one Vsan to another Vsan ?

    hi
trying to find in FM but didnt found,
my customer concerns is to migrate 1000 zones from Vsan 1 to Vsan 400
so it is possible without rebuilding all zoning informations in vsa400 ?
    thanks in advance

that is strange MDS software agree to have same zone names enable on several differents vsan
i' thought when copied from original Vsan to new Vsan zoneset set was deactived automatically from original Vsan ?
i don't clearly understand the logic of that ?

  • SOLVED! E_ADEPT_REQUEST_EXPIRED - if you're on a mac, anyway....

i did a lot of research. if you get that annoying message when you tried to activate, try this:  (http://support.apple.com/kb/TS2538)
    Symptoms
Mac OS X may display the incorrect time when "Set date & time automatically" is enabled in the Date & Time pane of System Preferences, after using Setup Assistant or Migration Assistant to migrate time zone settings from another Mac.
The analog clock shown in the Date & Pane of System Preferences may temporarily display the correct time after selecting the correct time zone, but the time zone selected will not be retained after quitting System Preferences.
    Products Affected
    Mac OS X 10.5
    Resolution
       1. If the Date & Time preferences window is open, close it.
       2. From the Go menu choose Go to Folder.
       3. Type or paste the following location, then click Go.
          /private/etc/
       4. Delete the folder named "localtime".
       5. Enter your admin password if prompted.
       6. Select the correct time zone in the Time Zone tab of Date & Time preferences.
    Additional Information
When no time zone is selected, the time displayed in Mac OS X will be in Greenwich Mean Time (GMT), except for the World Clock widget in Dashboard which will display the correct time for the city shown on the widget.
it worked for me, and this bloody program has now been activated. hope it helps someone else!
frankly, if my local library didn't FORCE its users to have this program in order to get out ebooks, i would have given up. this a stupid problem.

    How about another two cents?
I know squat about a Mac, so I can't comment on how to set the time and
date.  I can comment, however, on ADE.
Putting it into perspective, Adobe got into the digital publishing arena
early, with its Portable Document Format.  As the industry developed, the
industry formulated specifications for an 'electronic publishing' format,
and Adobe created the .epub file format to those specifications.  As the
industry developed, Adobe developed software that implemented digital
rights to publications (DRM) via its Content Server software.  So, Adobe is
part of the landscape for digital publications.
Libraries, publishers, authors and distributors all use software that
implements the Adobe framework to distribute ebooks.  You don't HAVE to use
Adobe Digital Editions to interface with your local library, but you do
have to use software that utilizes the Adobe framework.  You could use
Calibre, Bluefire Reader or Overdrive, which is probably the program the
library uses.  All of these will work.
To be fair, Digital Editions is intended to simplify the process (you be
the judge) and let an individual interface with external ebook sources AND
manage a library of ebooks. Most users in the Windows world have few if any
problems with it.  And the Mac version works well also - IF you get your
    computer's settings squared away....

  • Problem migrate zones solaris 10

    Hi,
i'm trying to migrate one non-global zone from one machine to another machine. The steps I have followed are:
    1) On the machine where I have the zone that I want to migrate:
    # zonecfg -z myzone export -f /myzone.cfg
    # cd /export
    # find zones/myzone -fstype lofs -prune -o -fstype ufs | cpio -ocm -O /myzone.cpio
    2) On the second machine, I have copied the myzone.cfg and myzone.cpio, and after:
    - I modified in myzone.cfg the option set physical with the correct one for this machine
    # zonecfg -z myzone -f /myzone.cfg
    # cd /export
    # cat /myzone.cpio | cpio -icdm
    # cp /etc/zones/index /etc/zones/index.bak

    Hi Darren,
Thanks God I've succesfully installed Solaris 10 to my laptop, after "swimming" for a while in google :)
It said that this was a bug of Solaris 10 when installed in PC with Pentium III or II processors.
Here is the solutions (hope someone with same problem with me could find it useful) :
    1. After the GRUB menu appears, edit the kernel line then append -kd at the end (to enter kmdb upon boot), then boot
    2. Then type this command when kmdb prompt shows, [0]>
    [0]> cmi_no_init/W1
[0]> :c 3. It should boot and run without problem, then follow the installation menu and option
    4. After reboot, again follow step 1 & 2 when GRUB menu shows. I promise this is the last time :)
    5. To make it permanent, add this following instruction to */etc/system* once the system up
    set cmi_no_init=1//Henry
